With her performance slipping and confidence sagging, a reluctant Christabel Nettey had little choice but to listen to her body.

By late June, the Canadian long jumper was exhausted, having extended herself during a mid-season trip to Europe for four competitions in two weeks. She also maintained a busy schedule upon her return that included a season-low jump of 6.21 metres in a victorious performance at the Canadian track and field championships on July 6.

Nettey, who jumped 6.54 two weeks later in London before taking nearly a month off, will return to England for Birmingham's Müller Grand Prix on Saturday (CBCSports.ca, 9 a.m. ET) in hopes of securing enough points to earn a spot for the Diamond League final later this month.

"For me, and I'm sure for most athletes, it's hard to accept your body needs rest," the 27-year-old from Surrey, B.C., said in a phone interview this week. "I wasn't jumping well, struggling with simple execution and couldn't figure out why.

"I thought I needed to push harder, get in the weight room, and that was the battle I was in. But my body was telling me to slow down."

I've had great practices the past two weeks … and my confidence is back to where it was earlier in the season.— Canadian long jumper Christabel Nettey on her recovery from exhaustion

Nettey wondered if she was suffering from burnout and would have to call it quits for 2018 after her eighth-place showing at London Stadium. She returned to Phoenix for rest and minimal training with Stu McMillan, her third coach in two years, and received treatment for overall body soreness.

Nettey slowly worked her way back to the runway and jumping at practice, which she hadn't done since before the Canadian championships in Ottawa. Former coach Dan Pfaff also paid her a visit to work on sprint mechanics and takeoff positions.

"When I finally gave in, [rested] and started to see [the benefits] it was like, 'Ok, I'm back in a rhythm now, do what your body allows and don't push it,'" said Nettey, who will compete Saturday at 9:52 a.m. ET at Alexander Stadium. "I've had great practices the past two weeks and my confidence is back to where it was earlier in the season. I'm excited to compete."

Coming off a solid indoor season — her first in three years — Nettey excelled to start the outdoor season. She won her first three competitions, including a season-high 6.92 jump in Brisbane and a gold medal two weeks later on the Gold Coast of Australia at the Commonwealth Games.

In all, Nettey won seven of 11 outdoor events this year. But in retrospect, the 2016 Olympian says she became "over eager" with the excitement of competing well, didn't receive treatment in Europe and watched her body shut down.

"I'm glad it happened at that point in the season, so I could recognize it and change things," Nettey said. "It'll help for planning what [workload] I am able to handle. I'm just grateful that I didn't get injured."

A strong showing Saturday should allow Nettey to rise above or at least maintain her seventh-place standing as the top eight advance to the Diamond League final on Aug. 30 at Weltklasse Zürich in Switzerland, where the Canadian placed fifth (6.46) three years ago in her Diamond League final debut.

Six other Canadians are competing at Birmingham:

Johnathan Cabral, men's 110m hurdles (final at 10:06 a.m. ET): The 25-year-old from Peribonka, Que., appeared headed for the podium at last week's NACAC championships but finished sixth (14.07) after qualifying first for the final. Cabral, whose season best is 13.34, has four wins this year, including a Canadian title.

Matt Hughes, men's 3,000 steeplechase (9:33 a.m. ET): Hughes, 29, skipped the NACAC championships to rest for Birmingham, where he will enter Saturday's race 10th in the Diamond League standings, with the top 12 advancing. The five-time Canadian champion was fourth (season-best 8:12.33) at the Commonwealth Games in April.

Hughes wins the 3,000m steeplechase event at the Canadian Track and Field Championships in Ottawa. 1:17

Mike Mason, men's high jump (9:18 a.m. ET): The three-time Olympian from Nanoose Bay, B.C., has been in top form this season and is fresh off a 2.28-metre jump for a silver medal at NACAC championships. Mason, 31, jumped 2.32 in May at Victoria, just shy of his 2.33 personal best, set in 2015 at Edmonton. He is 20th in the Diamond League standings, having competed only at Monaco in July.

Brandon McBride, men's 800 (10:34 a.m. ET): The Canadian-record holder sits one point behind Jake Wightman of Great Britain for the eighth and final spot in Diamond League final qualifying. McBride, who edged Edmonton's Marco Arop for gold at the NACAC championships, has reached the podium at four of six events in 2018.

Brandon McBride and Marco Arop finished first and second in the men's 800-metre race at the NACAC Track and Field Championships in Toronto. 4:04

Gabriela Stafford, women's 1,500 (9:22 a.m. ET): Birmingham will mark the Diamond League season debut for the 22-year-old University of Toronto psychology major. Stafford clocked 4:07.36 at the NACAC championships, one month after capturing her third consecutive Canadian championship. She ran a season-best 4:05.83 on June 2 in Nashville.

The London, Ont, native won the women's 1,500m race with a time of 4:17.08 at the national championships in Ottawa. 8:09

Sage Watson, women's 400 hurdles (9:03 a.m. ET): Watson, of Medicine Hat, Alta., last raced a month ago, placing eighth in 56.21 seconds, nearly two seconds slower than her season-best 54.55 recorded on June 7 at the Bislett Games in Oslo, Norway. The 24-year-old rookie professional was fifth at the Commonwealth Games.

Roar gifted A-League finals berth https://briefnews.eu/roar-gifted-a-league-finals-berth/ https://briefnews.eu/roar-gifted-a-league-finals-berth/#respond Sun, 15 Apr 2018 10:58:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/roar-gifted-a-league-finals-berth/ WITH his team having defied the odds to qualify for the finals for an eighth successive year, Brisbane coach John Aloisi believes the Roar are good enough to win the A-League championship.

Following their 3-2 away win over Perth Glory on Saturday night, the Roar faced a nervous wait to find out if it was enough to secure a top-six berth.

Much to their relief it was, with Adelaide’s effort to beat 10-man Western Sydney 3-2 at ANZ Stadium on Sunday ensuring the Roar sealed sixth spot, with their 35-point effort from 27 matches being two points better than the Wanderers.

Brisbane now meet third-placed Melbourne City in a sudden-death semi-final at AAMI Park on Friday night.

Adelaide, who finished the regular season in fifth spot, take on fourth-placed Melbourne Victory in another sudden-death clash at AAMI Park on Sunday.

Premiers Sydney FC and second-placed Newcastle Jets have the first weekend of the finals series off.

Aloisi was proud of his side’s effort to reach the finals after a disrupted season in which Brisbane were hit by a crippling injury toll and off-field problems.

“It’s been a really tough season but we’ve come through it, finished strongly and now we plan to win it (the championship),” Aloisi said.

“We’re very optimistic about her chances … but the first thing we need to worry about is beating Melbourne City on Friday.”

“This group just doesn’t know how to give up. It’s a Brisbane Roar way, they don’t know how to give up … and that’s special.”

The Roar finished the season with seven wins from their final 11 matches, with their scalps including Sydney FC and the Victory – both away from home.

Aloisi praised Saturday night’s two-goal hero Henrique, who proved the difference after coming on in the first-half for the injured Brett Holman.

“He could have easily put his head down that he didn’t start … but he was causing (Perth) problems,” he said.

Aloisi and his team arrived back in Brisbane from Perth halfway through the rollercoaster Wanderers-Adelaide clash.

Oriol Riera put the Wanderers ahead from the penalty spot in the 16th minute, before goals from Papa Baba Diawara and Daniel Adlung gave Adelaide a 2-1 lead.

Marcelo Carrusca equalised for the Wanderers before half-time, and then Riera had the chance to put Western Sydney ahead again from the penalty spot, but his effort was saved by Reds goalkeeper Paul Izzo.

The match took another twist in the 62nd minute when Wanderers midfielder Keanu Baccus was sent off for lashing out at Adelaide attacker Johan Absalonsen.

Reds substitute Ryan Kitto puts the Wanderers out of their misery with the match-winning goal in the 80th minute.

Rafael Nadal QUITS Australian Open to hand Marin Cilic semi-final berth vs Kyle Edmund https://briefnews.eu/rafael-nadal-quits-australian-open-to-hand-marin-cilic-semi-final-berth-vs-kyle-edmund/ https://briefnews.eu/rafael-nadal-quits-australian-open-to-hand-marin-cilic-semi-final-berth-vs-kyle-edmund/#respond Tue, 23 Jan 2018 15:23:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/rafael-nadal-quits-australian-open-to-hand-marin-cilic-semi-final-berth-vs-kyle-edmund/

Nadal had taken the first set to leave Cilic a 10/1 outsider to come from behind and knock out the world No 1.

But the Croatian rallied to take the second before losing an agonisingly tight third-set tie-break in which both men lost their serve repeatedly.

However, Cilic hung tough and broke early in the fourth, at which point Nadal called for the trainer.

He had three minutes of treatment on his right leg above the knee and was given tablets to deal with the pain – but he still could not stop Cilic forcing a fifth and deciding set.

And after another treatment session, the No 1 seed was broken again and he promptly retired, much to the disappointment of a packed Rod Laver Arena.

Nadal confirmed afterwards that the problem was not with his troublesome knee or with his hip, but that it was a muscular injury that had initially felt “tired” in the third set before giving way in the fourth.

“It is difficult to know exactly what it is now,” Nadal said.

“It is difficult to know exactly the muscle. Just happened minutes ago.

Marin Cilic is into his second Australian Open semi-final

“This type of injury is difficult to know immediately, no?

“We need to wait a couple of hours.

“Tomorrow I am going to do a test, an MRI here, then we will know.”

Nadal had already said he would not play in Spain’s Davis Cup tie with Britain (February 2-4) and will now prioritise the top clay-court tournaments in Barcelona, Madrid, Monte Carlo and Rome ahead of defending his French Open crown.

Rafael NadalGETTY

Rafael Nadal was forced to retire nearly four hours into the match

But he did call on the ATP Tour to reconsider the schedule and surfaces on which they play after joining Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray, Stan Wawrinka and Kei Nishikori in the ranks of men’s tennis’ walking wounded.

“Somebody who is running the tour should think little bit about what’s going on,” Nadal added.

“Too many people getting injured. I don’t know if they have to think a little bit about the health of the players.

“Not for now that we are playing, but there is life after tennis.

“I don’t know if we keep playing in this very, very hard surfaces what’s going to happen in the future with our lives.”

Cilic meanwhile would not be drawn on whether he wanted to see changes, as many professionals have called for in recent months.

“The calendar is there for so many years,” Cilic said.

“Just in this last year, obviously beginning of this one, we see a lot of top guys that are injured.

“In the end it’s on all of us to try to take care of our bodies, to try to pick the right schedule, to listen to our body, how it feels.

“I completely understand there are a lot of tournaments that we play, mandatory tournaments.

“In my own perspective, we are all picking our own schedule.

“It’s tough to say, ‘Okay, we going to take out two months of the season’ cut that many tournaments, because tennis is such a global sport.

“Everywhere we play people enjoy it. I think tennis is getting more and more popular, which we really want also.”

Cilic will play unseeded Kyle Edmund in the semi-finals of the Australian Open, a stage of the Melbourne tournament the Croatian last reached in 2010, when he lost to another Brit – Andy Murray – in four sets.

Cilic and Edmund will clash for a place in the final at 8.30am UK time on Thursday morning.

Eagles fly past Vikings to book Super Bowl berth https://briefnews.eu/eagles-fly-past-vikings-to-book-super-bowl-berth/ https://briefnews.eu/eagles-fly-past-vikings-to-book-super-bowl-berth/#respond Mon, 22 Jan 2018 14:31:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/eagles-fly-past-vikings-to-book-super-bowl-berth/

With one quarter remaining, Eagles players on the field and sideline already were dancing.

A bit later, after their stunning and resounding 38-7 rout of the Minnesota Vikings earned them the NFC championship, they listened as nearly 70,000 made the Linc shake with “Fly Eagles Fly.”

Hey Philly, you’re in the Super Bowl.

“It was electric. The fans are awesome,” All-Pro tackle Lane Johnson said.

“We’re going there to prove we belong,” added Brandon Graham of the meeting with the AFC champion Patriots in two weeks.

And maybe it’s time for everyone to put aside Carson Wentz’s injury. Nick Foles might be good enough to win the Eagles their first NFL title since 1960.

Foles was on fire Sunday night against the stingiest scoring defence in the NFL. Next up after their most-lopsided playoff victory: the Eagles’ first Super Bowl appearance since 2005, against the team that beat them then.

Foles replaced the injured Wentz in Game 13 and finished off a rise from last place last season to first in the NFC East. There were plenty of doubters entering the playoffs, but the former starter in Philadelphia (15-3) under another regime has been brilliant.

“I just think you’ve got to keep going at it,” Foles said. “And we all believe in each other. I’m blessed to have amazing teammates, amazing coaches. Everyone here that’s a part of the Philadelphia Eagles organization is first class.”

Resilient group

Foles’ best work might have come against Minnesota (14-4) and its vaunted defence that was torn apart in every manner. Foles threw for 352 yards and three touchdowns, showing poise, escapability and moxie in going 26 for 33.

“I’m so happy for Nick and the offence,” said coach Doug Pederson, “and for Nick, everything he’s been through and battled, he stayed the course and we all believed in him.”

Foles was helped greatly by the Eagles’ domination on defence and a spectacular weaving 50-yard interception return TD by Patrick Robinson. Philadelphia ruined the Vikings’ hopes of being the first team to play in a Super Bowl in its own stadium.

Instead, the Eagles will seek their first Super Bowl crown in Minnesota on Feb. 4; their last championship came in 1960.

“I’m so proud of our players,” team owner Jeffrey Lurie said. “The resilience this group of men has is unequaled.”

Minnesota made it look easy at the outset, driving 75 yards on nine plays, each of which gained yardage. The payoff was a 25-yard throw from Case Keenum to Kyle Rudolph well behind linebacker Najee Goode as Philadelphia’s defence looked confused on the play.

That didn’t happen again for Philly.

Over by halftime

Defensive end Chris Long had a huge hand in Robinson’s 50-yard interception return. Long burst in from the left side and got his arm on Keenum to disrupt the throw for Adam Thielen. The ball went directly to Robinson, who sped down the left side, then made a sharp cut to the right and got a superb block from Ronald Darby to reach the end zone.

Inspired, Philly’s D forced a three-and-out, the Foles led the Eagles on a 12-play, 75-yard masterpiece of a drive. LeGarrette Blount showed all his power and escapability on an 11-yard surge up the middle for a 14-7 lead.

Turnovers, something Minnesota rarely committed with an NFC-low 14 during the season, hurt again and not only ended a solid drive, but set up more Philly points. On third down from the Eagles 15, Keenum was blindsided by rookie Derek Barnett, and the ball bounced directly to Long.

It was only the second strip-sack the Vikings have been victimized by all season.

A blown coverage — another rarity for Minnesota — on third-and-10 allowed Alshon Jeffery to get wide open for a 53-yard TD, and Philadelphia tacked on Jake Elliott’s 38-yard field goal to make it 24-3 at halftime.

“Credit to Philadelphia, they got after us pretty good tonight and we didn’t do enough good things,” Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said.

“I’m still proud of my football team with the way they worked all year. The way they went about their business. The way they competed all year and tonight we didn’t get it done.”

Canada brushes aside Brazil to secure men's curling worlds berth https://briefnews.eu/canada-brushes-aside-brazil-to-secure-mens-curling-worlds-berth/ https://briefnews.eu/canada-brushes-aside-brazil-to-secure-mens-curling-worlds-berth/#respond Sat, 13 Jan 2018 04:43:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/canada-brushes-aside-brazil-to-secure-mens-curling-worlds-berth/

Let’s face it: Brazil was never going to beat Canada in a best-of-five curling series. It was never really about that, anyway.

In the first end of the competition, Canada scored seven points against Brazil and never looked back. The Canadian rink, led by Glenn Howard, swept the Brazilians off the ice 15-1, 8-3 and 6-3 in three straight games.

The series win clinched Canada’s spot at the men’s world championship at the beginning of April in Las Vegas.

“I’ll be honest with you, it’s a huge relief,” Howard said after the victory. “I knew how massive this challenge was because the entire country was riding on this series. We had to win this thing and we did.”

Howard’s team was asked by Curling Canada to take on this endeavour. While it seemed like an easy answer, Howard, winner of four Brier titles and four world championships, says he hesitated to say yes.

“I was nervous when I was first asked…Canada has never missed a world championship. It would have been a shame after my career for that to happen.”

Why did series happen?

The big question: How did Canada and Brazil end up in this curling series anyway — especially considering Canada is the reigning world champion?

With the world championship being held in Las Vegas, the host country, USA, gets the automatic entry.

The Americas zone is guaranteed two spots. Canada would get that second spot because of its world ranking — but that’s where Brazil comes in. The Brazilians challenged Canada for their spot in this year’s world championship. Game on? Not really.

This challenge was always going to be about growing the sport in Brazil and putting curling in the spotlight of the soccer-crazed country.

“If I don’t keep going until next generations can play, curling will die in Brazil,” skip Marcelo Mello said. “We have been putting a lot of efforts in the last ten years so it’s known in our country.”

Mello knows they were never going to beat Canada, he’d be one of the first to admit it. In fact, this was his fifth time trying to win a spot into the world championships with a Brazilian team. The prior four times all came against the United States. They lost every time.

But the reason he keeps doing this is because Mello’s dream is to see Brazil at a men’s world championship one day, even if it isn’t him.

“Maybe in ten years time we’ll become a curling nation but if we quit now we’ll waste all our efforts,” he said. “This is not a part of our culture, so it’s hard to attract people.”

Mello says there is not one curling arena in Brazil. That’s his goal right now, trying to get one built. He says he’s been lobbying a number of different groups for years trying to make it happen.

Brazilian curling dreams sparked in Canada

Mello lives in Sherbrooke, Que. He’s been there since 2008 while attending classes as a Masters student. Mello had a friend visit him back then who inquired about this funny sport on ice with brooms.

“So we went to the Anglophone curling club there,” he said. “We practised English and curling. People were very warm and welcoming but they thought it was weird that Brazilians wanted to curl.”

Mello was hooked from day one. At 35 years old he was curling for the first time and loving it. As for his family and friends, they had a different take.

“At the beginning they all thought it was weird. They made a lot of jokes about the brooms and sweeping. But after they started to understand what the brooms did, they started to like it,” Mello said.

Mello’s curling love allowed him to travel to Sochi in 2014 to broadcast all the curling games on Brazilian TV. He’ll be back at the Olympics next month broadcasting curling games again — all part of his push to grow the sport back home.

“Winter sports in Brazil are not important and not really funded. It’s a cycle that’s difficult to get out of,” Mello said.

It was Howard who Mello closely watched curl over the years, admiring his ability to make shots in pressure moments.

Then, years later at this event, he found himself on the ice playing against him.

Howard has great respect for what the Brazilians are trying to do.

“They got to play on arena ice in front of 2,000 people. All that stuff is important for experience. This will go miles for them in their journey.”

Jordan Belchos earned the second spot on Canada’s 10,000 metre long-track speed skating team for the Olympic Games with a second place finish in the distance at the trials on Tuesday night.

The Toronto native completed the race in 13 minutes 22.53 seconds to finish second behind Calgary’s Ted-Jan Bloemen and qualify for the Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Bloemen, who finished in 12:43.04, had pre-qualifying for the Olympics after a silver medal at the World Cup held in Stavanger, Norway, last fall.

Graeme Fish (13:28.13) from Moose Jaw, Sask., came third.

Canadian speed skater finished 2nd, behind Ted-Jan Bloemen who had already earned an Olympic berth in the event.14:02

“I have the Olympic shirt sitting in my dresser that’s been there since the media summit in June, and I had always refused to wear it or touch it, but now I can finally go home and put it on,” said Belchos, who qualified for his first Olympic Games.

“It’s like when you put the biscuit on the dog’s nose and it has to wait before it can eat it. I’m just going through the acceptance of that right now and it feels good. It’s honestly been a stressful few months.”

Some skaters, like Bloemen, were pre-qualified for the 2018 Olympic team in certain distances before trials, based on their results in World Cups the first half of this season, and last year’s world single-distance championship.

Weidemann earns spot in 5,000 m

Canada can take up to 10 men and 10 women to Pyeongchang to compete in long-track speedskating. The Olympic team will be unveiled Wednesday in Calgary.

Those chasing Olympic berths at trials had to finish in the top three in their races, and also meet or have already met Speed Skating Canada’s time standard in the distance, in order to be considered for the team.

Ottawa’s Isabelle Weidemann earned Canada’s second spot in the women’s 5,000 by winning the distance at the trials in 7:00.64. Josie Morrison (7:05.99) and Victoria Spence (7:13.39), both from Kamloops, B.C., finished second and third, respectively.

Weidemann had already qualified for the Games in the 3,000.

Other nominees

Other female athletes who earned nomination to the Olympic team by the conclusion of trials were:

  • Ivanie Blondin, Ottawa
  • Keri Morrison, Burlington, Ont.
  • Brianne Tutt, Airdrie, Alta.
  • Kali Christ, Regina
  • Marsha Hudey, White City, Sask.
  • Heather McLean, Winnipeg
  • Kaylin Irvine, Calgary

The other men who met Olympic criteria were:

  • Denny Morrison, Fort St. John, B.C.
  • Vincent de Haitre, Cumberland, Ont.
  • Olivier Jean, Lachenaie, Que.
  • Alex Boisvert-Lacroix, Sherbrooke Que.
  • Gilmore Junio, Calgary

Lawes, Morris win Olympic mixed doubles curling berth https://briefnews.eu/lawes-morris-win-olympic-mixed-doubles-curling-berth/ https://briefnews.eu/lawes-morris-win-olympic-mixed-doubles-curling-berth/#respond Sun, 07 Jan 2018 23:23:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lawes-morris-win-olympic-mixed-doubles-curling-berth/

Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris will represent Canada when mixed doubles curling makes its Olympic debut at the Pyeongchang Games after an 8-6 victory over Val Sweeting and Brad Gushue in Sunday’s trials final from Portage la Prairie, Man.

Lawes/Morris took the lead by scoring four points in the fourth end and added a steal of two in the fifth to make it 7-3. Sweeting/Gushue fought back with a pair of their own in the sixth end and made it a one-point game with a steal in the seventh.

In the eighth and final end, Sweeting chipped off and rolled out with her final throw to give Lawes/Morris a point and the victory.

Lawes/Morris had hammer but didn’t need to throw their final stone after the Sweeting miss.

Both Lawes and Morris have Olympic experience.

Lawes, from Winnipeg, won gold in 2014 as the third for Jennifer Jones. Morris, a resident of Canmore, Alta., stood on the podium in 2010 as the third for Kevin Martin’s gold-medal foursome.

No Canadian curler has ever won two gold medals at the Olympics, so Morris and Lawes will look to make the history books in Pyeongchang.

Gushue, from St. John’s, won gold at the 2006 Olympics. Sweeting, from Edmonton, has never competed at a Winter Games.

On Sunday, the teams exchanged singles in the first two ends. Sweeting tapped back for two in the third for a 3-1 lead.

Lawes and Morris followed with a big response. After a Morris bump put three rocks in the four-foot, Lawes used the hammer for a hit and roll that changed the complexion of the game.

The four-player curling team trials were held last month in Ottawa. Calgary’s Kevin Koe won the men’s competition and Ottawa’s Rachel Homan took the women’s title.

‘Where boys become men’1:26

Football: Trent Sainsbury has been cleared and is ready to play against Japan.

The result clears a path to the World Cup for Ange Postecoglou (L) and the Socceroos.

Matt WindleyHerald Sun

UPDATE: SOCCEROOS coach Ange Postecoglou says Saudi Arabia’s shock loss to the UAE has done nothing to alter his side’s preparation for tonight’s night’s crunch World Cup qualifier against Japan.

Australia’s chances of qualifying directly for Russia 2018 were given a dramatic and unexpected boost when Saudi Arabia lost 2-1 in Al Ain.

All of a sudden, a win for the Socceroos at Saitama Stadium will stamp its ticket to the biggest event in world sport.

And where a Saudi win on Wednesday morning coupled with an Aussie loss on Thursday would have condemned the Socceroos to the dreaded playoffs, now the stakes aren’t so cutthroat.

But that’s not the view Postecoglou is taking.

SCROLL DOWN FOR WIN, LOSE, DRAW PERMUTATIONS

SELECTION DILEMMA: Who will Socceroos start in Saitama?

The coach woke at 1.30am Japan time to watch the Gulf rivals go head-to-head.

And while many expected the Saudis to win — despite being away from home — considering what was at stake for them combined with the fact that the UAE needs several miracles to go its way to qualify, Postecoglou said the result wasn’t “entirely surprising” to him.

“I guess the only question mark was how motivated UAE were going to be,” Postecoglou said.

“They played quite well and obviously the Saudis probably struggled a bit with the pressure of the situation. That’s two losses on the bounce for them.

“But it doesn’t really change anything for us. From our perspective everything’s still the same. Our goal is to win here on tomorrow (Thursday) night and win on Tuesday (against Thailand at AAMI Park).

“Our fate’s been in our hands the whole way and it continues to be.”

CHAT LIVE WITH MATT WINDLEY IN JAPAN!

A win for Saudi Arabia would have taken it two points clear of Japan and three points clear of Australia ahead of that pair’s meeting.

The Green Falcons next host Japan in Jeddah on Wednesday morning (AEST), hours after Australia plays Group B stragglers Thailand.

Given that the dates of the Muslim pilgrimage of Hajj meant the Saudi Arabia-UAE game was unusually played two days earlier than the other Group B encounters, both Japan and Australia now have the advantage of knowing exactly what is on the line at Saitama Stadium.

But Postecoglou said there are bigger factors at play than just qualifying for Russia.

“The overriding thing is it’s not about qualifying for a World Cup, because we’ve done that before — not that we take it for granted,” he said.

“It will obviously be a big occasion should we do it. But if that’s our only end goal then we’re kind of not doing our role whilst we’re in this position.

“My job and the players who are currently representing the country (is) to progress the country.

“Progression for me means qualifying but (also) playing a brand of football that will be successful at a World Cup.

“While people are making a big deal about last night’s result, I can guarantee the boys won’t bat an eyelid because the motivation for tomorrow is the same as it would be regardless of what happened.”

PERMUTATIONS

SOCCEROOS BEAT JAPAN

Given their major qualification rivals will take points off each other next week, the Socceroos now know a first win on Japanese soil will be enough to secure a spot at a fourth consecutive World Cup as they would sit two points clear of Japan and three points clear of Saudi Arabia heading into the final matchday.

That would catapult the Samurai Blue into a nailbiting, winner-takes-all clash in Jeddah next week, although a draw for Japan in that match would be enough to see it scrape through.

SOCCEROOS AND JAPAN DRAW

But even a draw against Japan would go a long way to securing qualification for Australia.

In that scenario, only a shock result against Thailand in which the Socceroos fail to pick up all three points would put them in any danger of having to qualify through the playoffs.

A Socceroos loss to Thailand on Tuesday would mean the Saudis could draw with Japan and again leapfrog Australia into second.

A draw against Thailand would require Saudi Arabia to win its last game.

A stalemate in Saitama would still leave Japan in a sticky situation heading into next week, as a loss to Saudi Arabia coupled with an Australia win over Thailand would send the Samurai Blue to the playoffs.

SOCCEROOS LOSE TO JAPAN

But don’t think we’re on easy street just yet, as a loss in Saitama would still leave Australia’s qualification hopes on a knife’s edge.

A win for Japan would see it seal its qualification with a game to play given it would sit four points clear of both Saudi Arabia and Australia.

It would also leave Saudi Arabia and Australia deadlocked on 16 points going into the final round.

Assuming both teams then win their final games — which the Gulf side would be favoured to do considering the game would mean little to Japan — the two would be engaged in a shootout to see who can come out with the better goal difference, as they would both be tied on 19 points come the end of the section.

While Australia appears to have the easier game on paper, the Saudis have two distinct advantages in this scenario.

1) They will go into the final matchday at least one goal ahead on goal difference, depending on how many goals Australia had lost to Japan by — they are both on +6 going into the Japan-Australia game.

2) Given their game kicks off later, they will know exactly how many goals they need to win by having already seen the Australia-Thailand result.

In any case, an Australian loss to Japan will mean that there is no way the Socceroos can have that magic “we’re going to Russia” moment at AAMI Park, as their qualification hopes will still depend on what transpires in Jeddah.

Canada rebounded Wednesday in World League volleyball, defeating Russia in straight sets to advance to the Final Six semifinals in Curitiba, Brazil.

The Canadian men’s indoor squad prevailed 25-23, 29-27, 25-17 in a Pool A match at Arena de Baixada, site of soccer’s 2014 World Cup.

On Tuesday, Canada opened Final Six play with a four-set loss to the host Brazilians, the reigning Olympic champions.

The Canadians (1-1) will play Friday at 2:05 p.m. ET or 4:40 p.m. against an undetermined opponent. Serbia (no record) faces the United States (0-1) in a Pool B match Wednesday at 10:40 p.m. Pool B play concludes Thursday with France (1-0) opposing Serbia.

“We knew playing Brazil was going to be tough,” Canada captain Gord Perrin said moments after Wednesday’s win. “This is the game we wanted to win and we took care of business.

“We’ve played resilient all World League. It’s been a battle. We trust each other and that’s what we did tonight.”

Sharone Vernon-Evans, the youngest player on the Canadian squad at 18, led the way with 14 points on 12-of-23 spiking, one block and one service point. Stephen Maar and Perrin added 12 points apiece.

The Russians nearly saved the second set with a pair of monster blocks, but Canada eked out the win and never looked back.

Egor Kliuka was Russia’s lone player in double digits with 11.

Saturday’s bronze match is slated for 7 p.m., and the gold-medal final is at 10:05 p.m.
