The couple spoke out as it emerged an independent review into a series of baby deaths is to be expanded after more families came forward. 

The Health Service Journal reported more than 60 cases, including baby deaths, brain injuries and deaths of mothers, have been identified.

Concerns were first raised about the hospital’s maternity unit in 2009 following the death of the couple’s daughter Kate Stanton-Davies, just six hours after her birth. 

A report found the tragedy was avoidable. Since then, dozens of other parents have come forward fearing their babies’ deaths could have been avoided. 

It is alleged that the latest deaths happened in December 2017 when a mother and two babies died in unrelated incidents. 

Mr Stanton, 48, said: “Kate’s death was avoidable and so were so many other cases that we’ve heard about. “Many of the families have been extremely brave. They have had to put their head above the parapet and had to battle this trust.” 

Ms Davies, 44, of Ludlow, Shropshire, said: “There are 60 cases and that is substantiated even though the hospital trust are trying to deny that. This trust will have to stop being in denial. It is an unsafe trust. Babies and mothers are at risk. 

“This has to stop. Not just for me, not just for Richard, not just for our family. It has to stop for all the other families.” 

 

Kayleigh Griffiths, whose daughter Pippa died in 2016 after midwives ignored signs of a serious infection, said the trust is “not open to change”. 

She told the Journal: “There are going to be more cases as families are coming forward.” 

Last year senior midwife Donna Ockenden was appointed to review 23 cases of alleged poor maternity care at the trust which yesterday said it had written to 12 other families to seek permission for their care to be reviewed. 

Chief executive Simon Wright said: “To suggest that there are more cases which have not been revealed when this is simply untrue is irresponsible and scaremongering.” 

The trust said it has reviewed 40 cases, 23 of which had no signs of failure of care and five of which the families could not be contacted. 

NHS Improvement said it had agreed “to consider additional historical investigations” that have come to light since April 2017.

Mark and Anita Abel recalled the horrifying moment they learned that their son Sam had taken his life after years of bullying in school and on social media.

Clearly upset, Anita told Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield about the tragic day that Sam committed suicide, saying: “We had a little disagreement that morning because he had been playing on his iPad and he was laughing a lot on his bed.

“I asked him to help change the sheets and he didn’t want to and I had a little moan at him.”

“Later, he said, ‘Mum I’m going for a bike ride to clear my head’ which is fine, he normally would.

“I told him to be back by 1pm and as he went out to get his bike, I called him back, gave him one pound and told him to bring me a paper back,” she explained.

Struggling to finish the story, Anita broke down as she said that he never came back and then she received a phone call from the paramedics telling her the heartbreaking news.

Upon hearing a similar story from Nicola Harteveld,  whose daughter Meg took her life a month before Sam did, Holly couldn’t fight her emotions, begging the parents to answer what needs to be done.

As her voice cracked, the 36-year-old said: “What can we do as parents? You get to the point where you’re not the only parents we’ve spoken to who have lost children under these circumstances and each and every one is wrong.

“What can we do to change this? What makes the difference?” Holly asked.

Mark replied that it is at the hands of social media creators, calling on them to monitor their apps even further to prevent bullying.

In response to Nicola’s initial interview, This Morning created their Be Kind campaign which aims to raise awareness of bullying among teenagers in an attempt to end it.

The 90 second commercial saw the boy ask his mother about his dead parent and realise he had little in common with him, until they head to a local McDonald’s where he orders a Filet-O-Fish.

The mother remarks: “That was your Dad’s favourite too. Tartare sauce all over his chin.”

As the camera pans back to the boy, he is seen smiling as he wipes away sauce from his face.

Many viewers complained on Twitter that the commercial was exploiting child grief.

One person wrote: “Absolutely awful #mcdonalds advert exploiting grief in this way really scraping the barrel, very poor show #mcdonalds.”

Another added: “I lost my father when I was a child and I find the latest McDonald’s advert disgusting and offensive. Shame on you! #mcdonalds #badtaste.”

After coming under fire, McDonald’s have since decided to withdraw the advert from tomorrow.

A spokesperson told Express.co.uk in a statement: “We can confirm today that we have taken the decision to withdraw our ‘Dad’ TV advert. The advert will be removed from all media, including TV and cinema, completely and permanently this week.

“It was never our intention to cause any upset. We are particularly sorry that the advert may have disappointed those people who are most important to us – our customers.

“Due to the lead-times required by some broadcasters, the last advert will air tomorrow, Wednesday 17 May. We will also review our creative process to ensure this situation never occurs again.”

The Advertising Standards Authority confirmed it had received over 100 complaints about the advert and is currently deciding whether or not to investigate.

“Complainants have objected that it is inappropriate and insensitive to use bereavement and grief to sell fast food. Some complainants have referenced the proximity to Father’s Day.

“We’re carefully assessing the complaints but no decision has been reached on whether there are grounds to launch an investigation.”

The first of a two-part BBC series followed 10 people struggling with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and PTSD, with 54-year-old Nick supporting the runners in training as they faced their fears and worked to overcome their demons.

The instalment focused on an incredible woman and mother Rhian, who suffers with depression after the sudden death of her youngest baby boy.

Just five days after he passed, Rhian’s husband left the house and never came back, tragically committing suicide after being overcome with grief at the death of their son.

Mind Over Marathon viewers watched on in awe as Rhian struggled to overcome her crippling anxiety which prevented her from being able to run alone, thus impeding her training for the London Marathon.

When Nick visited her at home in Wales, he joined her on a jog and offered uplifting support when they arrived back.

As Rhian opened up about her heartbreaking story, Nick said: “You have no idea how amazing I think you are and other people think you are just for surviving.”

Viewers flooded to social media to praise the presenter and the programme in general for its moving portrayal of mental health struggles.

“@MrNickKnowles you were great with that brilliant lady!” one Twitter user said. “It is truly heartbreaking what she’s been through.”

“@MrNickKnowles I’m so glad you told Rhian what I’m sat here thinking; she’s amazing just for surviving and keeping going,” another commented.

In another touching moment, Nick helped marathon trainee Shereece through a particularly low point when her depression overcame her and she struggled to be able to leave the house and get back into training.

Shereece admitted that she didn’t want to accept his offer to have a psychiatrist come and help her through her battle, but Nick had some inspiring words of wisdom for the mother-of-one.

“Getting help from people is not a weakness,” he insisted. “If you were running now and you developed a tight calf muscle, you’d go and see a masseur who would massage it out and get it moving again so that it could repair and you could carry on.

“So at the moment, you’re in a situation where you’re not feeling great and so you talk to somebody who knows how to help you with that until you’re feeling good again. It’s like a massage, it’s just a massage for your head.”

With his insightful comparison of mental health with physical health, Shereece finally accepted the offer of professional help, and soon she returned to join the group in training and even completed the massive six kilometre challenge at the end of the episode.

Later in the episode, Nick reflected on his experience supporting the amazing runners, concluding that “just listening is key”.

Mind Over Marathon part two airs next Thursday at 9pm on BBC One.
