Figures released by local hotel association Hosbec show the number of overnight stays in the famous Costa Blanca holiday resort by Brit tourists last year plummeted by 454,000.

The drop represented an eight per cent fall, although the five million overnight stays registered by UK visitors still made Britain Benidorm’s number one foreign tourist market.

In December 41.7 per cent of the foreign holidaymakers who stayed in Benidorm were Brits according to the Hosbec figures, compared with just three per cent from second-placed Belgium and 2.2 per cent from third-placed Holland.

Spanish holidaymakers accounted for just over half the tourists who made overnight stays in the resort.

Hotel bosses say the resurgence of the domestic market – with the number of overnight stays by Spaniards last year jumping by 494,000 to 5.3 million – has countered the problem the British slump could have caused.

The Spanish rise – helped by a 17 per cent increase in the number of Portuguese tourists – has meant Benidorm hoteliers have been able to grade last year as one of the best-ever and on par with its historic 2016 when the number of overnight stays came close to reaching the 12 million mark.

The Brit fall has been blamed on competition from countries including Turkey and Egypt, the reduction of air capacity and the choice of apartments as accommodation.

Hosbec President Antonio Mayor said: “Despite a push by rival destinations like Turkey and Egypt, we are very satisfied at the results obtained in Benidorm.

“Few holiday destinations can present such solvency. Any businessman in the travel industry would be happy with guaranteed results like this for the next ten years.”

Brits began to flock to Benidorm in the sixties as package holidays became a trend.

The resort slowly became a home-for-home for package tourists from the UK with British pubs and fish and chip restaurants.

In September grandmother-of-six Freda Jackson, 81, from Blackburn, claimed her Benidorm holiday was ruined because her hotel had “too many Spaniards.”

Last week it emerged another Brit holiday favourite – the Costa del Sol resort of Torremolinos – had enjoyed its best tourism figures for 10 years with almost one million visitors recorded.

Benidorm in Spain was the scene of chaos yesterday after a double shooting sent the holiday spot into a “lockdown,” according to local media reports.

The shootings – which occurred at 11pm Wednesday night local time – were not fatal and are believed to be related to drug trafficking.

Spanish police are now investigating, but the Foreign Office have not updated their travel advice to the region.

Police confirmed two people were injured in the shootout, one believed to be British, the other Moroccan – officials said one man’s injuries were not serious.

Police found four bullet casings at the scene.

Shocked tourists expressed their horror with one witness saying bars around the area were on lockdown following the gun shots.

Another witness claimed a group of five men had targeted two men on the main strip, Calle Mallorca.

Local media La Information reported at least one of the injured men was involved with drugs trafficking and that police were now on the hunt for the shooters.

National police confirmed they would be checking CCTV and traffic cameras in the area to aid with the investigation.

A shocked holidaymaker commented: “We were at the pub across from it.

“Pubs were on lockdown because of it. Couldn’t believe my eyes.”

Another British visitor said that he had to “do a runner” when the incident happened.

Videos posted on Twitter show police and emergency service vehicles swarming on the busy area – popular with British holidaymakers.

One witness wrote: “Nothing like a rush of emotions when you’re sat in a bar in Benidorm and all of a sudden 15 cop cars pull up outside pull two people out of a car because there’s been a shooting two minutes up the road from where you’re at.”

Another tweeted: “Sitting in a bar in Benidorm, next minute doing a runner after a supposed double shooting. Raging, just got two gin and tonics.”

Benidorm can attract more than a million British visitors ever year, with its guaranteed sunshine and beaches.

Spain’s tourist popularity peaked in the 1970s, when as many as 17million Britons visited the country every year.

However, numbers have slowly dropped thanks to competition from more exotic destinations.

Tonight’s Benidorm finale will see the Dawsons heading home for their 25th wedding anniversary party, but with a baggage handlers strike at Alicante will it be a happy ending?

The show’s writer and creator Derren Litten seemingly confirmed that would not be re-commissioning the beloved show.

Derren tweeted: “Crazy to think Wednesday will be the last episode of Benidorm!

“I created the series over 11 years ago, wrote it, guest starred in it and ended up directing it.

“It’s difficult to think what else there is to do!”

He added: “Thank you for watching! #MuchasGracias.”

One of the show’s biggest stars Jake Canuso, who plays Mateo Castellanos, teased another series, but said he was “saying nothing”.

He tweeted to his 80,000 followers: “It’s WEDNESDAY!!! The day of the @BenidormTVshow 9PM on @ITV. This last episode of the current series is fun packed with laughs and guest stars!!! You’re in for a treat!

Jake added: “It’s been a great series. One of my favs! Is there a next series? I’m saying nothing #benidorm #Benidorm10.”

Following a successful ten series, Jake also explained how Benidorm will be hitting the road for a national live tour later this year.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Jake revealed: “Benidorm is going on tour! We’re doing the live national tour so that will be in Autumn.

“We start rehearsing in August. It will be good. We’ll be going around the country. It will be fun.

“It will be a little bit like what you saw on the Royal Variety show. It’s the same jokes, the same people, just for a live audience.

“I think there will be some interaction with the live audiences so it should be fun. We’ll break the fourth wall and do a bit of that.”

Fans took to social media ahead of the final episode of the series.

One viewer tweeted: “Omg I’m going to miss Benidorm. Thank you so much for gracing our screens for 11 years. Thanks to all cast and crew involved it will be missed lots.”

“I can’t thank you enough for the joy you’ve brought, evenings spent in gales of laughter,” posted another.

A third added: “Thank you @DerrenLitten for 11yrs of the best laughs of my life, the best cast of all time, the fantastic guest stars, you sir are a genus, and deserve all the awards for all the hardwork and brilliant writing.

“I’m going to be heartbroken I can’t wait for beni live sept now x.”

Will there be another series of Benidorm?

The current series of the ITV comedy marks its 10th on the small screen.

Episode one of the latest run kicked off on February 28 and it will air every Wednesday for the next nine weeks.

However, rumours that the series has been axed have been circulating following the season premiere.

According to The Sun, a show insider claimed that “bosses feel it’s run its course”.

WHO IS IN THE CAST OF BENIDORM SERIES 10?

They added: “The ratings have started to drop off and a number of the fan favourites have left, so it just feels as though the time is right to let it go out while it’s still on a high.”

More fuel has been added to the rumours with news that series creator Derren Litten has left ITV to work on a new BBC series with a similar concept to Benidorm.

However, Litten himself took to Twitter to rubbish the rumours.

He tweeted: “Apparently The Sun are running a story tomorrow on how #Benidorm has been cancelled.

“Don’t make me f*****g laugh (I enjoyed that story after series 6. And 7 and 8 and 9…).”

HOW MANY EPISODES ARE IN BENIDORM SERIES 10?

Despite the rumours, ITV have not confirmed whether series 10th will be Benidorm’s last.

A spokesperson told Express.co.uk: “Series 10 is currently on air and no decisions have been made re a further series.”

When is Benidorm season 11 released?

The last two seasons of the long-running ITV comedy have aired early on in the year.

Season nine began airing in March 2017 and season seven began in January.

So if the series is greenlit for another run it will likely begin broadcasting sometime around early 2019.

What will happen in Benidorm series 10?

The first episode re-introduced audiences to the bizarre and hilarious world of Benidorm.

Episode two will be airing next week and a synopsis reads: “The wedding party gets back after a messy night out with no sign of Kenneth (played by Tony Maudsley).

“Jacqueline’s (Janine Duvitski) concern turns to joy when he turns up after ‘the night of his life’, Rob (Josh Bolt) checks in with a much anticipated South American friend, and Joey (Nathan Byron) is back with a new mate.”

Season 10 of the much loved sitcom Benidorm only began on Wednesday, but claims that it has been axed have put a halt on fans excitement for the latest series.

It’s now been reported that the current series will be the final series, amid falling ratings.

What’s more, Benidorm creator Derren Litten is said to have already signed up to work on a new sitcom for the BBC.

The new seaside comedy will apparently be set in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, and will be set in a karaoke bar in a holiday resort.

“Benidorm has been a huge success for ITV for a decade, but bosses feel it’s run its course,” a TV insider explained.

“The ratings have started to drop off and a number of the fan favourites have left, so it just feels as though the time is right to let it go out while it’s still on a high.

They added to The Sun: “It has been ITV’s longest running comedy, which is a real achievement.”

This season’s premiere saw 4.3 million fans tuning in, however it was a drastic drop on last series, coming up at 400,000 fewer viewers.

Benidorm’s creator Derren tweeted on the night that the premiere aired, denying the claims that the show was to be cancelled.

He wrote: “Apparently The Sun are running a story tomorrow on how #Benidorm has been cancelled.

“Don’t make me f*****g laugh (I enjoyed that story after series 6. And 7 and 8 and 9…).”

On the alleged cancellation, an ITV spokesperson told Express.co.uk: “Series 10 is currently on air and no decisions have been made re a further series.”

The first episode of this season saw fans left in tears after an emotional tribute.

Bobby Knutt tragically passed away late last year, before this season aired.

Tiger arrived in series six along with his father Clive Dyke (played by Perry Benson) and mother, Tonya Dyke (Hannah Waddingham).

After returning for series seven and eight, Tiger retuned for series nine of Benidorm with friend Joey Ellis (Nathan Bryon).

Fans will remember that the holiday got off to a rocky start after Tiger hooked up with Rob Dawson’s (Josh Bolt) grandmother.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Danny confirmed: “No, season 10 I wasn’t a part of.”

Danny was too busy filming his new role as Keanu Taylor in EastEnders to fly out and film for series 10 of Benidorm.

The 24-year-old actor continued: “I have so much confidence that they will do very well.

“It’s their tenth series and for a comedy sitcom to be going for 10 years is a fantastic achievement.

“I think they deserve to win awards just for the fact of going for 10 years. Benidorm has a massive place in my heart!”

He cheekily added with a smile: “And a great place for stag parties and hen parties and just for a good holiday really. And it’s cheap! So I recommend it to anyone.”

Winning the best newcomer award at the National Television Awards last month, Danny explained that it was a “crazy” experience.

Danny said: “It’s pretty crazy! I keep telling people that I didn’t join EastEnders, I don’t do what I do, I didn’t join this industry for the awards or for the celebration or glory.

“It’s not why we do that. I think if you’re an actor who does it for the awards then I think you’re in the wrong industry.

“The fact that I get to wake up on a daily basis and do a job that I love doing – that is telling stories and playing a character – I’m very blessed and I’m very humbled to do that. So I’m very lucky.”

Fellow Benidorm cast member and regular Shane Richie will return as Sammy Valentino for series 10.

Shane exclusively told Express.co.uk: “When I originally did it it series eight, my character was kind of ‘out there’ and a bit barking mad.

“You kind of see the results of his nervous breakdown in these episodes. I love it. Darren [Litten] the writer and producer, he’s fantastic.”

It comes after Benidorm writer Derren Litten revealed how his life had dramatically changed since he was first asked to create a pilot series.

Derren explained: “When I wrote the first script of Benidorm I had no idea it would change my life so dramatically over the next 10 years.

“I am so grateful to our fans and to ITV for giving Benidorm the best possible home we could hope for. Here’s to the next 10 years!”

When does Benidorm season 10 air on ITV?

Season 10 of Benidorm will air on ITV on Wednesday, February 28 at 9pm.

The latest instalment of the ITV comedy, which first started back in 2007, has again been  penned by creator Derren Little.

Speaking about returning to Benidorm, writer Little said: “When I wrote the first script of Benidorm I had no idea it would change my life so dramatically over the next 10 years.

How many episodes are in Benidorm season 10?

This series will consist of a nine episodes in total, the same number as the previous run.  

Along with this season, there was also a 10th anniversary special which took a behind-the-scenes look at the show.

Benidorm: 10 Years On served as a trip down memory lane and featured interviews with cast and the crew. 

Who is in the cast of Benidorm season 10?

Benidorm season 10 will again feature a whole host of stars including former Loose Women host Sherrie Hewson as Joyce Temple Savage, Jake Canuso as Mateo, Adam Gillen as Liam, Tony Maudsley as Kenneth, Shelley Longworth as Sam, Nathan Bryon as Joey and Janine Duvitski as Jacqueline.

Also returning are Elsie Kelly as Noreen and Selina Griffiths as Pauline respectively, who will be enjoying another holiday at the sun-soaked resort. 

EastEnders actor Shane Richie will be reprising his role as entertainer Sammy Valentino for four episodes. 

While John Challis is going to become a series regular in the role of Monty Staines. 

There will be another appearance from the Dawson family with Julie Graham as Sheron, Steve Edge as Billy, Bobby Knutt as Eddie, Josh Bolt as Rob and Kate Fitzgerald as Loretta Chase.

Season 10 will feature a crop of guest appearances from the likes of The Chuckle Brothers, Nigel Havers, Mark Heap, Bobby Ball, Claire Sweeney, Layton Williams, Carol Decker, Tony Hadley and Holly Johnson.

What will happen in Benidorm season 10?

Fans of the hit comedy can expect more of the same as the characters find themselves getting into a new series of sticky yet hilarious situations. 

A plot synopsis for episode one from ITV reads: “Wedding anticipation is in the air at the Solana as Joyce and Monty’s big day has arrived. 

“It’s Billy and Sheron’s 25th wedding anniversary holiday. Sam is left in charge of the Solana and is looking at ways to make some quick cash! 

“Things go awry at the wedding so Kenneth volunteers to save the day.”

Fans will remember that Tony, who plays hairdresser Kenneth Du Beke, had a huge fight at the end of series five.

The resident Blow ’n’ Go expert faced a bitter rivalry with Sherrie’s hotel manager character Joyce Temple-Savage.

After a boozy night out, Kenneth’s key wouldn’t fit in the salon locks after Joyce had changed them.

She told Kenneth that she had shut it down because he was behind with his rent, but this prompted a disgusted Kenneth to attack Joyce.

When the pair finally came to blows, Joyce was seen to knock Kenneth’s teeth out beside the Solana swimming pool.

Fans were convinced the actor Tony had special dentures made, or a spot of clever CGI.

However, it turns out that Tony’s teeth being knocked out was the real deal.

Recalling their fight scene, 67-year-old Sherrie explained how she struggled to act her punching, accidentally hitting Tony too hard.

She said: “I remember Tony saying, ‘You’re actually doing it for real Sherrie. You’re actually thumping me in the face’.

“And I went, ‘I’m really sorry but I don’t know how to pull it’.”

The Loose Women star added: “I couldn’t help it because I really wanted to smack him because I thought, ‘It will look so much better if I smack him’.”

The scene ended with Kenneth’s front teeth flying out of his mouth covered in blood after a hefty smack from Joyce.

Tony, 50, said: “People always say, ‘How did they do that?’. 

“Little secret… just before we filmed that scene, I’d had a fight with a patio door at my mum’s house.

“By the time I came to film I was halfway through having implant surgery to have my two teeth replaced. Derren phoned me up and said, ‘Do you mind if I write it into the show?’.

“I said, ‘Absolutely, let’s do it’. What you see me spitting out of my mouth is half a piece of chewing gum, very cleverly edited.”

Benidorm series 10 returns to next week on Wednesday, February 28 at 9pm.

Part of the Valencia region’s famed Costa Blanca, the lively city is well known for its nightlife, sandy beaches and palm tree-lined promenades. 

But as terror alerts sweep much of Europe, many Britons are questioning how safe their summer holidays are in 2017. 

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) warns about a ‘likely’ terror threat in Spain.

This category is the fourth highest, behind ‘very likely’, ‘high’ and ‘severe’.

In relative terms the terror threat is low compared to other countries like France, Belgium, Germany and Turkey, which are all in the ‘very likely’ category. 

Russia is the only nation allocated to ‘high’ while the UK is the one place with a ‘severe’ threat.

“Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners. 

“The Spanish authorities take measures to protect visitors, but you should be vigilant and follow the instructions of the local authorities.”

Other safety considerations for the island include being cautious on balconies. 

The FCO said: “There have been a number of very serious accidents (some fatal) as a result of falls from balconies. Many of these incidents have involved British nationals under the influence of drink or drugs. 

“Your travel insurance may not cover you for incidents that take place while you’re under the influence of drink or drugs.

“Some local councils will impose fines to those caught behaving irresponsibly on balconies or practising ‘balconing’.”

While Britain remains a member of the EU, British nationals can continue to travel freely to Benidorm without a visa. 

The EHIC card is also still valid for holidays, at least until Brexit negotiations are finalised. 

Your passport needs to be valid for the proposed duration of your stay.
