Newly released data revealed the benefits of President Joe Biden's student-loan forgiveness plan could be far-reaching in the Republican-led states trying to block the policy.

Just over a month after Biden announced up to $ 20,000 in student-debt relief for federal borrowers making under $ 125,000 a year, the White House on Tuesday released state-by-state estimates on how many borrowers could be eligible for the relief. In 11 states, over 1 million borrowers are projected to be eligible for the loan forgiveness, per the data, with California leading the list at 3.5 million borrowers.

"I've always maintained that data drives everything, and that's why this announcement today, and this data release, is just so essential," Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley said during a Tuesday press call. "I'll be honest, I was emotional walking through these numbers with my team, recognizing that behind every number, there is a person, there's a family, there's a story here."

But some Republican politicians might not see it quite that way. On September 12, 22 GOP governors sent a letter to Biden urging him to "withdraw your student loan plan immediately," arguing that the policy is costly, illegal, and unfair to those who already paid off their loans. 

"For many borrowers, they worked hard, made sacrifices, and paid off their debt. For many others, they chose hard work and a paycheck rather than more school and a loan. Americans who did not choose to take out student loans themselves should certainly not be forced to pay for the student loans of others," they wrote. 

Here's how many student-loan borrowers would benefit from Biden's debt relief in each of those 22 states:

An Education Department official told reporters on Tuesday that the administration arrived at those estimates by using "commonly employed statistical techniques" to estimate borrowers' income, along with census data that has detailed information on income for specific groups of people. 

Since Biden announced his relief, Republicans have been pushing back on the policy — some have even expressed intent to block the loan forgiveness in court. But the Biden administration maintains it has the legal standing to carry out this one-time blanket relief and is moving forward with implementation, planning to make an application for relief available in early October. 

"The analysis we are releasing today tells us that President Biden's debt relief plan will touch working families in every corner of the state of the country, in red states and blue states and everywhere in between, states and big cities, sprawling suburbs, tribal lands and remote rural towns," Under Secretary of Education James Kvaal told reporters. "Nearly 20 million borrowers will have their entire balances discharged, others will benefit from lower balances and lower payments."

    Cruises are increasing in popularity, with Cruise Lines Association (CLIA), reporting a 21 per cent increase in the number of UK bookings in 2017 compared to 2016 for European river cruises.

    However, if the draw of exploring the world isn’t enough to tempt you, it’s now been revealed that going on a cruise can be good for your health and even make you cleverer.

    A study by the University of China, published this year in the International Journal of Tourism Research, showed that cruises can improve three areas of your life: emotional, thinking and relational.

    “In the short term, happiness from cruise travel is created mainly through emotional and relational experiences,” the study said.

    “The long‐term effect of cruising travel is largely derived from thinking experience.”

    Cruises provide a total escape experience thanks to the exotic destinations, exciting onboard entertainment, the variety of food and beverages and spa treatments.

    “[Cruise travel] offers opportunities for passengers to engage in a socially unique and memorable experience to enhance,” said the study.

    Experts in the UK agree with the study’s findings. “Cruise ships are some of the most densely populated areas on earth, designed to accommodate and entertain thousands of guests per trip,” Dr David Jarratt, senior lecturer in tourism at the University of Central Lancashire, told Express.co.uk.

    “With so many people in one place, shared activities and dining can lead to new friendships, and since holidays are often a time where loved ones come together, cruises can create a sense of togetherness and unity.”

    The complete contrast of a cruise and holidaymakers’ normal lives adds to the benefits reaped from such a travel method.

    “Cruises are also very far-removed from everyday life, and the lack of distractions and responsibilities often lead to a sense of wellness,” said Dr Jarratt.

    “The open vistas, fresh air and smell and sound of the sea present an escape from the pressures of contemporary living, as well as encouraging contemplation and, for some, leading to an almost ‘spiritual experience’.”

    Health benefits can be plentiful – although you need to be careful not to counteract the good work with overindulgence at the buffet, cautioned Dr Jarratt.

    “Reconnecting with natural environments can offer a range of health benefits,” he said.

    “The sea can ease mental fatigue and replenish depleted energy, though it’s worth bearing in mind that food and alcohol can lead to a negative impact on wellbeing, despite the catharsis and escape from responsibilities that these holidays can offer.”

    Dr Jarrett explained it can take just 20 minutes for some people to feel the benefits of looking out a blue space – although the tenser you are, the less likely you are to feel such benefits.

    He recommended holidaying for more than five days to feel the greatest benefits of getting away from is all.

    “The ideal length of a trip will vary person to person, falling somewhere between feeling completely relaxed and becoming bored,” Dr Jarratt said.

    “It can also take a few days for the social benefits of a holiday to be felt, with some time needed to cement relationships – though it should be said that modern cruise ships are large enough that you can easily escape fellow passengers should you wish to!”

    The authors of the review said the cholesterol-lowering drugs, taken by six million Britons, may not help when used as the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

    They also concluded that statin treatment has many serious side effects and claim these have been “minimised” by certain trials.

    The results of the study of almost 1.3 million people was published last week in the Expert Review Of Clinical Pharmacology journal.

    One of the authors, Prof Sherif Sultan, of the International Society for Vascular Surgery, said: “Millions of people all over the world, including many with no history of heart disease, are taking statins despite unproven benefits and serious side effects.”

    Prof Sultan was also concerned that inhibitor drugs to further lower LDL cholesterol (LDL-C), referred to as “bad” cholesterol, are being promoted.

    The study found no link between high levels of LDL-C and hardening of the arteries – known as atherosclerosis.

    Prof Sultan said: “We suggest that clinicians should abandon the use of statins and PCSK-9 inhibitors, and instead identify and target the actual causes of cardiovascular disease.”

    PCSK9 inhibitors are a relatively new class of cholesterol lowering treatments.

    The paper disputes recommendations in a number of reviews of statin use and claims those are “based on misleading statistics, exclusion of unsuccessful trials and ignoring numerous contradictory observations”.

    The paper says high LDL-C levels appear to be unrelated to the risk of disease, both in individuals with familial hypercholesterolemia – a genetic condition that causes abnormally high levels of LDL-C – and in the general population.

    Some doctors and patients are worried about the long-term side effects of statins which have been linked in some studies to diabetes, muscle pain and memory loss.

    They argue that in many cases risks can be lowered by making changes to an individual’s diet and exercise.

    Others are concerned with the “overmedicalisation” of the middle-aged, which sees statins prescribed as a “just in case” measure to those who may develop heart problems in later life.

    But statins supporters – including the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice), which produces national guidance on health and social care – say the pills should be given more widely to prevent thousands of early deaths.

    The news comes a week after a major study in the British Medical Journal concluded that giving statins to elderly people in good health could be of no benefit.

    The Spanish research of 47,000 over-75s found no evidence that statins make any difference to low-risk patients.
