Is it a gaming monitor? Something different altogether? The answer is “Yes,” when it comes to the newly announced LG OLED Flex (aka the LX3, if you’re the sort who cares about model numbers) — a 42-inch OLED screen that can be viewed flat, like a traditional television, or curved, a la a newfangled gaming monitor.

The bend can hit a maximum of 900R (that’s a measurement of how much things bend in terms of the radius in millimeters), which means it’s likely a little less than the curvature of gaming monitors you’ve already seen, but definitely way more than any television you’ve got in your home currently.

LG OLED Flex LX3 curved television.

Other specs of note include a 0.1 millisecond response time, and LG’s Alpha 9 Gen 5 processor, and support for Dolby Vision.

But it’s the bendy part that’s definitely going to turn heads. That works a couple of ways. There’s a remote control that has two preset buttons — or you can manually change the curvature in 5% increments over 20 levels. The LX3 also has a height-adjustable stand with 14 centimeters of travel, or about five and a half inches, and can tilt between 10 degrees away or 5 degrees toward.

The flexible part isn’t the only thing LG has on deck for gamers. You can use the full 42 inches of the display, if you want, or scale things down to 32 or 27 inches to keep everything within view. And there’s a new game app, too, which is exclusive to the LX3. It’s got custom screensavers, and has shortcuts to YouTube and Twitch, as well as an audio equalizer for the integrated 40W speakers. There’s also a Multi View mode, which lets you display content from two sources at once, choosing which one controls the audio.

The LX3 also has a built-in microphone, USB ports for headsets, keyboards, a mouse or other peripheral, and everything connects via HDMI.

Still need more? There’s also customizable lighting tucked into the back of the LX3, so you won’t have to go LED shopping on Amazon.

The one thing we don’t have any info on yet is pricing and availability, so stay tuned for that.

The 4th dimension, but not as we know it: Scientists bend rules to catch glimpse of unknown https://briefnews.eu/the-4th-dimension-but-not-as-we-know-it-scientists-bend-rules-to-catch-glimpse-of-unknown/ https://briefnews.eu/the-4th-dimension-but-not-as-we-know-it-scientists-bend-rules-to-catch-glimpse-of-unknown/#respond Sun, 07 Jan 2018 00:25:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-4th-dimension-but-not-as-we-know-it-scientists-bend-rules-to-catch-glimpse-of-unknown/

Two separate teams of scientists have bent the rules of physics to catch a glimpse of evidence on something which, technically, we shouldn’t be able to perceive: a fourth spatial dimension.

Everyone is aware of our standard three dimensions of space and one dimension of time, but the two teams, one based in the US and the other in Europe, have shown the existence of a fourth spatial dimension by employing some head-melting quantum mechanics and a bit of laser trickery.

The teams created two custom-designed, two-dimensional experiments to generate an instance of the quantum Hall effect, which restricts the movement of electrons, allowing us to both perceive and measure them in a unique way. The quantum hall effect points to the existence of a fourth spatial dimension. Researchers who studied the effect won the 2016 Nobel Prize for Physics. The quantum Hall effect usually manifests itself in the boundary between two materials, where electrons can only move in two dimensions.

When a magnetic field is produced perpendicular to the 2D plane it greatly changes the behavior of electrons which flow through it, which can further be manipulated by reducing the temperature and increasing the voltage within the environment. The larger the field and the greater the voltage, the more of a role quantum mechanics plays.

“Physically, we don’t have a 4D spatial system, but we can access 4D quantum Hall physics using this lower-dimensional system because the higher-dimensional system is coded in the complexity of the structure,” Mikael Rechtsman from Penn State University told Gizmodo.

“Maybe we can come up with new physics in the higher dimension and then design devices that take advantage the higher-dimensional physics in lower dimensions.”

The European-based team supercooled atoms close to absolute zero, which were then placed in a 2d lattice created using lasers, before ‘exciting’ the atoms using additional lasers to get them moving again.

The US-based team took a different approach by beaming a laser through a block of glass to simulate the effect of an electric field on charged particles, as required to produce the quantum Hall effect.

“I think that the two experiments nicely complement each other,” one of the European researchers, Michael Lohse from the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Germany, told Gizmodo.

Put simply, as we perceive it, 3D objects cast 2D shadows, so it follows that 4D objects would cast 3D shadows, even if we can’t actually see the 4D object itself. Approximately two decades ago, boffins proved mathematically that fourth dimensional movement was possible but such theories were relegated to the realm of science fiction.

“At the time, however, that was more like science fiction,” said Oded Zilberberg as cited by Eureka Alert, “as actually observing something like that in an experiment seemed impossible – after all, physical space only has three dimensions.”

By using a topological ‘pump’ to manipulate the 2D environments in the experiments, Zilberberg postulated that we can, theoretically at least, turn a two-dimensional system into a four-dimensional one.

“Right now, those experiments are still far from any useful application,” Zilberberg admits.

However, as such research continues, it could afford us unique perspectives on current fields of study. One such instance would be in materials science.

Quasicrystals in metallic alloys have no periodic structure in three dimensions but do in higher, theoretical ones such as the fourth dimension. Such quasicrystals could one day greatly reinforce steel, develop improved heat insulation, and provide new materials which convert heat to electricity.

They could also be used as solar absorbers for power conversion in the renewable energy industry as well providing low-friction alternatives to current artificial bone repair and prostheses applications in the medical science field.

UN rights chief refuses to ‘bend knee’, won’t seek reelection in ‘current geopolitical context’ https://briefnews.eu/un-rights-chief-refuses-to-bend-knee-wont-seek-reelection-in-current-geopolitical-context/ https://briefnews.eu/un-rights-chief-refuses-to-bend-knee-wont-seek-reelection-in-current-geopolitical-context/#respond Thu, 21 Dec 2017 05:34:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/un-rights-chief-refuses-to-bend-knee-wont-seek-reelection-in-current-geopolitical-context/ The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights will not seek a second term in office given the current state of world affairs and disregard for human dignity.

“After reflection, I have decided not to seek a second four-year term,” Zeid Ra’ad Hussein said in the email addressed to his staff, which was seen by Foreign Policy and AFP. “To do so, in the current geopolitical context, might involve bending a knee in supplication; muting a statement of advocacy; lessening the independence and integrity of my voice – which is your voice.”

The announcement comes a day after the human rights chief expressed shock over Israel’s use of force against the Palestinians; in a crackdown, the roots of which, “can sadly be traced directly back to the unilateral US announcement on the status of Jerusalem.” Stating that Washington’s decision to move its Israeli capital to Jerusalem was “dangerously provocative,” Hussein added that Trump’s initiative goes against “international consensus.”

It’s not the first time that the UN’s human rights chief has criticized the American leader, who after assuming office, is seen trying to reshape the global political environment, focussing particularly on the Middle East and the Korean peninsula. Even before Trump was elected, Hussein warned that the Republican’s “deeply unsettling and disturbing” point of view “will be dangerous from an international point of view.”

Hussein expressed strong criticism of the US leader in October after listening to Trump’s speech at the United Nations. Trump’s rhetoric at the General assembly, he said, was “one part chauvinistic nationalism, one part balance-of-power swordplay and a crumbling adherence to law.”

“The combination of all of this, in the early part of the 20th century, led to the annihilation of millions of people,” Hussein warned, recalling the “calamity of two world wars and the Holocaust.”

In his letter to his colleagues, Hussein painted a “gloomy assessment of the state of human rights one year after US President Donald Trump came to power,” FP noted. The UN human rights commissioner said America’s new foreign policy disregarded human rights and “reintroduced torture as a tool to extract information.”

The FP report also noted, citing diplomatic sources, that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had allegedly “urged Zeid to tone down his critics of Trump, fearing that it could risk losing US support for the United Nations.”

Trump has indeed threatened to cut aid to UN member states who vote against the US at Thursday’s rare emergency UN General Assembly session. “They take hundreds of millions of dollars and even billions of dollars, and then they vote against us. Well, we’re watching those votes. Let them vote against us. We’ll save a lot. We don’t care,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Wednesday.

Hussein said he would focus his final months in office on promoting the Universal Declaration of Human Rights through “mobilization and defiance, pushing back the many trends across the world that seem to negate and deny the value of human rights.”

“There are many months ahead of us: months of struggle, perhaps, and even grief – because although the past year has been arduous for us, it has been appalling for many of the people we serve,” he wrote.

Dupuytren’s contracture: What is disease Margaret Thatcher had which makes fingers BEND? https://briefnews.eu/dupuytrens-contracture-what-is-disease-margaret-thatcher-had-which-makes-fingers-bend-3/ https://briefnews.eu/dupuytrens-contracture-what-is-disease-margaret-thatcher-had-which-makes-fingers-bend-3/#respond Thu, 16 Nov 2017 00:10:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dupuytrens-contracture-what-is-disease-margaret-thatcher-had-which-makes-fingers-bend-3/

DUPUYTREN’S CONTRACTURE is a fairly common condition that causes one or more fingers to bend into the palm of the hand. People that find it difficult to straighten their fingers should see their GP, urged Channel 4’s Embarrassing Bodies expert, Dr Dawn Harper.

Dupuytren’s contracture: What is disease Margaret Thatcher had which makes fingers BEND? https://briefnews.eu/dupuytrens-contracture-what-is-disease-margaret-thatcher-had-which-makes-fingers-bend-2/ https://briefnews.eu/dupuytrens-contracture-what-is-disease-margaret-thatcher-had-which-makes-fingers-bend-2/#respond Wed, 15 Nov 2017 04:47:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dupuytrens-contracture-what-is-disease-margaret-thatcher-had-which-makes-fingers-bend-2/

Dupuytren’s contracture occurs when connective tissue in the palm thickens.

The thick tissue forms hard nodules under the skin, which grow to become cords.

The cords can tighten, pulling fingers and thumbs toward the palm.

While the condition isn’t life-threatening, it can be a nuisance, and could get worse over time, according to the NHS.

Margaret Thatcher famously suffered with the condition, along with former US President Ronald Reagan, and Love Actually actor Bill Nighy, said Dr Dawn.

“With so many tinctures and adornments to keep us occupied with caring for our hands, it’s so easy to lose sight of the more physical concerns of hand health, such as mobility and dexterity,” said Dr Dawn.

“Dupuytren’s contracture is progressive (which means it gets worse over time), and unfortunately has no cure.

“But, it is marvellously manageable if you catch it early, as any build-up of cells and collagen can be removed with straightforward surgery or injections.”

We’re not exactly sure what causes the condition, but links have been made between Dupuytren’s and smoking, drinking, diabetes, excess physical impact and injuries, Dr Dawn added.

Hands are crucial to almost all of life’s daily tasks, so if you detect any lumps, bumps or pitting in your palms, go straight to your GP, she urged.

Difficulty straightening fingers, or skin tightening, could also be a sign of the condition.

“I feel particularly strongly about raising awareness of Dupuytren’s contracture amongst women, because it’s mainly associated as a condition that men have,” said Dr Dawn.

“However, more and more female Dupuytren’s sufferers in the UK are being diagnosed, meaning that we need to start waking up to the symptoms and treatment surrounding this condition.”

About 30 per cent of men with Peyronie’s disease – a condition which causes the penis to become curved when erect – also develop hardened scar tissue on other parts of the body, including for Dupuytren’s contracture.

Many cases of Dupuytren’s don’t need treatment, the NHS said.

Non-surgical treatments include radiation therapy and injections. The condition could also be treated by a small procedure which uses a needle to cut the cord which pulls the finger back.

In more severe cases, the cord can be cut in surgery to relieve tension, or the entire connective tissue can be removed.

WATCH: Motorcyclist suffers instant karma when THIS happens as he speeds around bend https://briefnews.eu/watch-motorcyclist-suffers-instant-karma-when-this-happens-as-he-speeds-around-bend/ https://briefnews.eu/watch-motorcyclist-suffers-instant-karma-when-this-happens-as-he-speeds-around-bend/#respond Thu, 01 Jun 2017 12:53:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/watch-motorcyclist-suffers-instant-karma-when-this-happens-as-he-speeds-around-bend/

Video footage captured from a car’s dash cam showed the moment the bike rider got a dose of instant karma.

Captured on the Gold Coast in Australia, the clip followed a busy road with buildings built up on either side of it.

The car was in the left lane when all of a sudden a motorcycle sped past beside it in the lane to the right.

As he rounded the bend the motorcyclist tried too forcefully to slam the brakes on his bike, after leaving his slowdown to the very last minute.

The man braked too hard and the wheels swerved out underneath him.

He tried to regain control but it was too late – the bike came to a complete stop in the middle of the lane and toppled over onto the adjacent island.

Still clutching onto the handlebars, the rider fell over with it, sprawling out on the island in the middle of the two roads.

He sprung to his feet immediately and began to dust himself off as he looked around him to see who noticed his fall.

One of the rider’s shoes had come off in his crash and he hastily tugged it back on just as the car’s camera carried on past him.

As it inched further along the street, the car slowed down at a set of traffic lights, revealing the reason why the biker came to such a dramatic stop in the first place.

The video has gone viral since it was shared online. Uploaded to LiveLeak, the clip has received comments from viewers who were less than impressed with the use of the bike’s brakes.

One said: “He needs a beginner bike” while another shared: “His face was more red than his knee.”

Another motorcycle video that went viral was captured on a busy highway in Los Angeles, US.

The rider zoomed up the left lane when suddenly a car pulled over in front of him.

It was far too late for the rider to do anything but crash straight into the rear of the sedan.

But the man’s ride didn’t stop there. Instead of clattering to the ground, he was flung forwards right off his motorcycle and onto the boot of the blue car that he had crashed into.

The car kept driving as the man laid on his back on top of it.

MIT’s mechanical actuators bend and ‘breathe’ as they heat up https://briefnews.eu/mits-mechanical-actuators-bend-and-breathe-as-they-heat-up/ https://briefnews.eu/mits-mechanical-actuators-bend-and-breathe-as-they-heat-up/#respond Tue, 09 May 2017 00:01:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mits-mechanical-actuators-bend-and-breathe-as-they-heat-up/ Researchers from MIT and other institutions have developed a new type of actuator — a mechanical component relying on movement — that works in extremely hot environments. Their newly-developed material could be used in, say, maintenance robots working in nuclear reactors. To achieve this temperature pliability, the scientists’ new system uses oxide systems like those used in rechargeable batteries: As ions move in and out, they expand and contract. Similarly, the researchers’ material bends with the flow of oxygen in and out.

Their findings, which will appear in this week’s issue of Nature Materials, reveal that their material can endure temperatures up to 500 degrees Celsius. This would be enough for mechanical actuators to endure the brutally high heat within jet or spacecraft engines, which is currently too extreme for components that rely on electrical stimulation to expand and contract.
