People in the UK are getting rid of their beloved, vintage-style stoves due to sky-high energy bills across Europe, Bloomberg reported.
Agas are cast-iron stoves that mainly run on gas and have become enduringly popular in the UK. They include up to five ovens and two hobs.
A brand-new appliance can cost up to £25,000, or $ 29,000, to purchase, according to the Aga website. Bloomberg reported that second-hand Agas can sell for around £5,000.
The stoves are designed to be left on all the time, although some of the newer versions are electric and can be switched on and off, per the Aga website.
Some owners have found their Aga has become too expensive to run amid the energy crisis, per the report. Aga said on its website that users can expect to pay around £40 a week to run one of its higher-end stoves.
Jack O'Dwyer, a worker tasked with removing stoves from kitchens, told Bloomberg he's thrown out 35 Agas since the beginning of 2022. Some of the owners cried during the removal process, he added.
O'Dwyer said at least 100 people have phoned him to ask about throwing out their Aga. Some of the owners can't afford the £500, or approximately $ 584, removal fee, and asked O'Dwyer not to charge them, he told Bloomberg.
One client paid £10 a day to keep an electric version of the Aga running, but got rid of it six months later, O'Dwyer told the publication, adding that forking out £70 a week for a stove was "outrageous."
Energy prices have soared since Russia invaded Ukraine in February. The Kremlin has cut its flows of natural gas to Europe through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline in response to Western sanctions. It's forced governments and some businesses to limit how much power they consume.
Aga engineer Glenn Bing told Bloomberg he had removed the traditional stoves at a rate of one a week this year. He also said in the report that he was converting oil and gas Agas to electric at the same rate.
Bing believed the cost of living was to blame. He told Bloomberg that most removals were due to people moving into new homes where the stove was already present — but they feared it would cost too much to run.
An Aga spokesperson didn't respond to Insider's and Bloomberg's request for comment made outside of normal working hours.

Faith (played by Sally Dexter) was last seen on Emmerdale when she confessed to son Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) she knew he had a secret child in Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter). The betrayal was too much for the village bad boy to bear and he offered his mother an ultimatum; either she leaves or he would. Having kept her distance, the matriarch is making her triumphant return to the ITV soap to see if she can bury the hatchet of the wrongdoings from her past. However, it seems she might have another reason for wanting to reunite with her family as her comeback is centred around death.
The drama kicks off in February when Cain’s wife Moira Barton (Natalie J Robb) inadvertently crosses paths with her mother-in-law.
Faith looks somewhat different as she is dressed like an undertaker and is in the process of stealing a hearse when she bumps into her daughter-in-law.
It has not yet been explained why the mother-of-two seems to have found a new profession, but could it be an estranged family member has died and she wants to give them a fitting send-off?
Never one to stick to the straight and narrow path, the feisty character could be trying to lay her loved one to rest with as little cost as possible.
However, how would her loved ones react back in the Village if they realise they wouldn’t have been given the chance to say their goodbyes?

After their chance meeting, Faith will turn up in the Dales and ask Moira if she thinks her son will ever forgive his mother.
Having just got her marriage with Cain back on track, it is unlikely the farm owner will want to upset the apple cart.
Will she convince her mother-in-law to stay away and focus on getting over her grief of losing a family member?
Or will the feisty character decide she wants the chance to rebuild her relationship with her son, regardless of the repercussions?
“A character bursting with fun, Faith’s certainly set to ruffle a few feathers and will test the Dingle’s loyalties like never before,” she continued.
“We’re absolutely thrilled to welcome Sally back to Emmerdale, an actor exuding vibrant charm,” Sophie concluded.
Viewers have been calling for the character to return ever since she left the Village in the Autumn of 2019.
Taking to Twitter, one fan of the feisty grandmother wrote: “#Emmerdale is really missing Faith Dingle, missing all the humour.”
Another posted late last year: “I would personally love a Faith return at Christmas. I know she could be a pain, but I think #Emmerdale needs some more big characters again!”
Executive producer Jane Hudson had only teased Faith’s return a week ago when she told the press what was coming up in the next few months.
The soap boss told Express.co.uk and other publications: “We have a very much loved character coming back to the village!
“They light up the screen. There’s going to be lots of fun. The actor/actress has returned to shooting. Look out for their return coming up soon.”
Viewers will have to wait and see what drama follows Faith in the coming weeks and months.
Over the past two and a half decades, the brother and sister have always been there for one another, with Sonia helping the father-of-one when his son Sami Jackson (Shiven Shankar) paid a visit to the Square last year.
Robbie was worried his ex-girlfriend Nita Mistry (Bindya Solanki) was going to cut his contact with the youngster after he failed to put him back on a plane to India on the agreed date he would return to his mother.
His sister managed to make him see sense and as a result, his relationship with his son got to continue, with the father-of-one leaving last September after the child was involved in an accident off-screen.
The former bin man hasn’t been seen since, but actor Dean, 42, has hinted his alter-ego will be making a return in the future.

Mary (played by Patti Claire) has been keeping herself busy looking after Tyrone Dobbs’ (Halsall) daughter alongside her duties at the florist after Dev Alahan (Jimmi Harkishin) and his teenager children left Coronation Street a couple of months ago.
Since her son Jude Appleton (Paddy Wallace), his wife Angie Appleton (Victoria Ekanoye) and their son George left the ITV soap earlier this year, Mary has been focussed on making the Alahan home a happy one.
When Dev and his teenage daughter Asha Alahan (Tanisha Gorey) return to Weatherfield next week however, it seems the household won’t be peaceful anytime soon as the shipowner’s daughter hides a heartbreaking secret.
Self-conscious about her appearance and after spending time in India with her family, Asha will begin using skin lightening cream on herself which lets her to push those closet to her away, including Mary.
Asha’s ordeal was first reported earlier this year, with the ITV soap set to explore the impact skin bleaching products can have on its users, working with the British Skin Foundation to portray the reality of the situation for many young people.
This is one of the first big storyline’s for Asha star Tanisha Gorey, 17, who will be put in the spotlight as her character becomes fixated on altering her appearance.
Speaking about the impact of Asha’ behaviour on her nearest and dearest, Tanisha said in a statement released by ITV: “She’s very hostile with both Dev and Mary, insisting they let her do her own thing.
“Asha lost her mum a long time ago and Dev tries to take on both roles.
“Mary does her best to step in, but for Asha they’re too far removed from what she feels she’s going through and she just wants her own freedom now she’s getting a bit older.”
Of Asha beginning to reject the likes of Mary who have been a pivotal figure in her life, the soap star explained: “Asha is close to Mary but there’s too much of an age gap there.”

Tanisha continued: “She feels like more of a grandmother figure and she can’t open up to her about how she’s feeling.”
Mary would be heartbroken if she ever thought those she cared for couldn’t come to her with their problems, so will Asha’s reluctance to open up leave the florist at a loose end?
Asha’s secret is almost uncovered in upcoming episodes, as after an afternoon out with Mary in which she keeps a lid on her skin lightening regime, the contents of her bag spill out on the floor.
Dev will help Asha to recollect her belongings but the teenager manages to grasp the skin lightning cream just in time before heading upstairs to apply the contents to her body.
The coming weeks and months will see Asha turn to online outlets to source the skin bleaching products, but will anyone notice the extremes the teenager is going to in order to change her appearance?
Speaking about being given the storyline, Tanisha commented: “I knew nothing about these skin lightening creams really, I’d heard it happened but I had no idea it was as common as it actually is.
“I’ve tried to find out a lot more about the issue and now I’m really excited to try and get the message across that this is something young girls are turning to as they struggle with their self esteem.
“I want to make sure I do it justice because if you’re going to cover such a serious issue, which is not shown a lot, then you need to do it in the right way.”
Also coming up on the cobbles later in the year, the residents of Weatherfield will come together to celebrate Ken Barlow’s (William Roache) eightieth birthday.
As part of the celebrations, Emily Bishop (Eileen Derbyshire) will be making a guest appearance three years after her exit from the show.
Coronation Street continues Monday at 7.30pm on ITV.
The third season of Riverdale only just came to an end but fans are desperate for as much information as possible about the fourth run.
Fortunately for viewers, the cast were on hand at the San Diego Comic Con last weekend to share details of the new series.
And, it seems the show’s beloved couples will go through some big tests when the show returns to The CW in the Autumn.
For one in particular, they could be at risk of a devastating split as a murderous secret threatens to split them for good.
Toni Topaz and Cheryl Blossom became a big hit with fans when they hooked up in the second season of Riverdale.
Cheryl even moved Toni into her home at Thorn Lodge but their romance hasn’t been without its difficulties.
It was strained when Toni set up the Pretty Poisons and secured work for them at La Bonne Nuit.
But Cheryl’s involvement at The Farm also led to some difficulties for the pair, which are only set to continue.
Cheryl star Madelaine teased “rocky roads” for the pair while speaking to Entertainment Tonight.
That’s not entirely surprising seeing as Cheryl is hiding the body of her dead brother Jason Blossom in her basement.

Die-hard fans know the show opened with the death of Jason and the case surrounding his murder.
Cheryl has found it particularly hard to get over his death as the pair were incredibly tight as siblings.
Most recently, she was keen on trying to contact him through her involvement at The Farm.
With Cheryl now hiding her dead brother’s body, what will Toni think when she finds out?
The former Southside Serpent certainly won’t be happy when she learns Cheryl’s been keeping secrets from her and it could lead to their separation.
However, it seems more likely that the pair will spend some time apart as Toni encourages Cheryl to grieve for her brother and take time to come to terms to what’s happened to her family over the past three seasons.
Cheryl and Toni won’t be the only couple to face romance troubles in the coming season.
Jughead Jones (played by Cole Sprouse) will be heading to Prep school which will put “stress” on his relationship with Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart).
Cole teased: “I think it might be a little bit tense. They might fall, turn away from each other, only to come back together way stronger. I think they’re gonna be really good.”
Riverdale season 4 returns to The CW later this year.
Nothing moves slowly in soapland and Emmerdale is no different, as one unsuspecting couple may discover they are expecting a baby together in an upcoming episode of the ITV soap.
At the beginning of the week Victoria Sugden (played by Isabel Hodgins) tries to help her new boyfriend Ellis Grant (Asan N’Jie) work through his issues with his half-brother Billy (Jay Kontzle).
The siblings have been at loggerheads since Billy was released from prison and Victoria will stop at nothing to help the men work through their problems.
Tired of watching the brothers go at it, Victoria locks the relatives in a Portakabin, hoping they will come to some resolution.
However, she is unaware Billy does not do well in confined spaces following his stint in jail.
When Billy has a panic attack Ellis realises there is another side to him and the twosome patch things up.
Meanwhile, Victoria suspects she might be having a baby after doing a pregnancy test, but panics about the results.
When she tries to reach Ellis on the phone he is unable to answer, as he is dealing with a medical issue of his own after she trapped him and his brother in the room.
Victoria leaves an urgent message for Ellis, but just as she does, Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) and his wife Jessie (Sandra Marvin) come storming down the stairs.
In a panic Victoria throws the pregnancy test under the sofa – is she expecting a child with Ellis?
Elsewhere, Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) could find himself behind bars as police investigate the murder of Joe Tate (Ned Porteous).
Fans of the ITV series are aware the father-of-two punched the businessman so hard he fell back and hit his head on a rock last year.
Next week, the mechanic will be arrested by the authorities as he shares a few drinks with his wife Moira Barton and sister-in-law Faith in The Woolpack.
As he enjoys a cold pint of beer in the pub, Cain is cornered by two female officers who question him about Joe’s murder.
They insist the handy-man comes with them, but when he refuses they arrest him for the killing and everyone in the pub is stunned.
Even his daughter Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb) is gobsmacked as she watches Cain from the entrance dismiss the police.
Could her father have murdered the man she loved so dearly? Or is it all just a big misunderstanding?
Some would agree it is the latter, as Joe’s death is yet to be confirmed and viewers had no clarification on his disappearance last year.
What’s more, there are a few stars of the ITV series who have refrained from revealing whether Joe is dead or alive.
Emmerdale continues tonight on ITV at 7pm.
Unlucky in love Chesney Brown (played by Sam Aston) is about to be get a new girlfriend in the shape of Emma Brooker (Alexandra Mardell) after Gemma Winter (Dolly-Rose Campbell) rejects his advances.
The take-away manager dates Emma when Gemma fails to notice his attempt to try and wine and dine her with a romantic meal at the Bistro.
In next week’s instalment of the hit ITV soap Coronation Street, Chesney invites Gemma out for dinner, but is shocked when she arrives with old friend Spike (Joel Morris) instead.
As Chesney watches Gemma passionately kiss Spike, Emma kindly offers to step in to make it a double date and save him any embarrassment.
But things quickly turn awkward for Chesney when they all sit down for dinner, as it is becomes obvious Emma has genuine feelings for him.
However, Chesney and Gemma secretly fancy each other, although they have not yet admitted they are interested in one another.
Unaware of the chemistry between Chesney and Gemma, Emma arranges another date with Chesney, but insists it is only practice for when he meets the right girl.
At dinner, Emma makes notes about Chesney’s dating skills and even offers him some friendly advice, but is this a facade to put the moves on him?
One thing is for sure, Chesney is not looking to start a relationship with Emma, as actor Sam, who plays the singleton, described their situation as “awkward”.
“Spike is a six foot four, tattooed to the nines, broad man who is the complete opposite of Chesney, and he feels horrific,” Sam told Digital Spy.
“It couldn’t go any worse for Chesney when they have the mix-up over the date, but he doesn’t want to come across as a loner with flowers, waiting for Gemma.
“It’s one of the most embarrassing situations that he could be in. It’s soul destroying for him.”
Explaining how the storyline unfolds, Sam continued: “Chesney sees Bethany in the Bistro and he wants her to stand in as his date, but Emma suggests herself so he just goes with it.
“It’s so awkward and Emma is really hamming it up, so Chesney is dying inside. Chesney is jealous of Spike, but he also takes an instant dislike to Spike because he is rude. The whole thing is a nightmare for Chesney!”
Discussing Chesney and Gemma, he added: “I do think Chesney and Gemma would be good together. They say opposites attract and they are very opposite.
“They are like chalk and cheese, but they work great as friends as well, so we will see.”
While Chesney struggles to find love his former girlfriend Sinead Tinker (Kate McGlynn) is heartbroken after discovering she has cervical cancer.
Pregnant Sinead will have to decide whether to terminate the pregnancy to save her own life and undergo chemotherapy.
It is a difficult decision to make for the mum-to-be, one made harder as he decides to keep her health problems a secret from partner Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard).
Coronation Street continues Wednesday on ITV at 7.30pm and 8.30pm.
Emmy-winning actress Peggy McCay, who portrayed Caroline Brady on Days of Our Lives for more than three decades, died Sunday from natural causes. She was 90.
McCay’s longtime co-star, Deidre Hall, confirmed the news Tuesday on Facebook. “Our dearest Peggy McCay has left us,” Hall wrote. “She was a friend, an activist and a real scrapper! I remember meeting her at the bedside of a dear, very ill friend. I backed her up as she ferociously took on doctors and nurses to make sure he had the very best care. She fought that hard for all her causes. Passionate and tireless. And how she loved being Caroline!”
In a twist of fate, McCay’s passing comes just weeks after the death of her longtime Days leading man Frank Parker.
McCay received five Daytime Emmy nominations for her work as Days‘ Caroline. She won a primetime Emmy in 1991 for her guest work on CBS’ The Trials of Rosie O’Neill. Additional credits include General Hospital, Gunsmoke and Lou Grant.
Days vet Stephen Nichols, who played McCay’s onscreen son-in-law Patch, paid tribute to his co-star on Instagram. “The last time I saw you, you talked about how eager you were to get back to work,” he wrote. “You said it with such conviction and longing. Don’t worry, you gave the world plenty. Gave your audiences inspired performances and your fellow actors your strength and inspiration and absolute love of the work. I will miss you sweet, Peggy. I am so grateful for the time I had with you .Sending love to your loved ones. Rest In Peace.”

I remember exactly where I was the first time I played Glory to Rome. It was the spring of 2011. I was on a Thalys high-speed train leaving Amsterdam, headed for Cologne, not far from where I was living at the time in Bonn, Germany. My friend Joe brought this new game straight from the US that he’d recently acquired—he was eager to teach it to me on the train ride.
Joe, who had a penchant for game nights, roped me into board games by teaching me the classic gateway game Catan. From there, I learned Puerto Rico, Power Grid, and many others. There was a period of time when our circle of friends gathered most Fridays over burritos and beer to play one game or another.
But GTR felt different. First, I noticed the packaging. Unlike the high-quality large-format cardboard boxes with soft colors and thoughtful art, GTR came in a compact, cheap, plastic tub that wasn’t much bigger than a large paperback book. Second, and more jarring, was the game’s art. It had a bright color palette and cartoonish characters that seemed like they belonged in a children’s clip art computer game. But hey, who was I to argue with Joe?
