Russia have been placed in a tricky Euro 2020 qualification group in Saturday’s draw in Dublin, as last summer’s World Cup hosts have been paired with the world’s number one team Belgium in Group I.

Stanislav Cherchesov’s men, who entered the draw as the second seed, will also face Scotland, Cyprus, Kazakhstan and San Marino in the group following Sunday’s draw in Dublin.

A successful showing in their home World Cup a few months ago has buoyed Russian football but a significant challenge awaits in the form of Eden Hazard and a Belgian side who were so impressive on their run to the semi-final.

Gareth Southgate’s England, meanwhile, have been drawn alongside Czech Republic, Bulgaria, Montenegro and Kosovo.

Champions Portugal will play Ukraine, Serbia, Lithuania and Luxembourg while three-times champions Germany have been drawn alongside neighbors Netherlands, as well as Northern Ireland, Estonia and Belarus.

Lukaku has failed to score in his last 10 games for Manchester United and struggled to repeat the heroics of his debut season, when he racked up 27 goals.

The forward has four goals from 15 games for United in all competitions this season and is not certain to lead their attack for today’s visit of Crystal Palace to Old Trafford.

During the international break Mourinho travelled to Belgium to watch Lukaku play in their Nations League tie against Iceland, to try to get to the bottom of the 25-year-old’s goal drought.

Lukaku did not feature for Belgium in that game, and pulled out of their following match, a 5-2 defeat against Switzerland, after feeling tightness in his hamstring.

But Mourinhio opened up on the reason for his trip to Brussels and said he was invited to the game by Belgium boss Roberto Martinez, whose counsel he sought over Lukaku’s ongoing injury and confidence issues.

“I went for the weather,” joked Mourinho. “Beautiful fog, something I don’t have here.

“I went there for, mentally, to be with Lukaku, to feel him, to see his situation and his injury.

“Roberto invited me to meet him, which I decided not to do, because I don’t like people to disturb people before matches.

“But I was with Roberto on the phone, trying to feel, trying to understand the problem and the evolution of the problem and, of course, I like to watch football.

“I was in London within a couple of hours by train, so it was easy to go.’

Mourinho admitted he dropped Lukaku for ’s 2-1 win over Everton last month because the striker was short of confidence and he wanted to ease the pressure on him.

Lukaku also missed away wins against Bournemouth and Juventus, but came on in United’s 3-1 derby defeat at Manchester City, winning a penalty converted by Anthony Martial.

Mourinho also said he does not believe Alexis Sanchez will leave United in January, despite the forward’s supposed disillusionment at the club after less than a year.

“I don’t think so, because he never told me that he wants to leave or isn’t happy to stay,” said Mourinho. “But I repeat, that is a personal thing related to my philosophy.”

Asked how he felt Sanchez was playing, Mourinho said: “Like the team. He’s improving, like the team is improving, and when he plays he’s giving us his personality, his desire to play and to produce for the team.

“He’s trying to adapt to how we play and vice versa. Can he do better? We can all do better. I can do better, he can do better and all the other players can also do better.”

Mourinho also accused former Real Madrid and Spain keeper Iker Casillas of trying to undermine United keeper David De Gea so he can earn a recall for Spain and add to his record 167 caps.

The United boss was asked how De Gea has been affected by criticism of his form in his native Spain and made it clear he felt Porto keeper Casillas – with whom he fell out at Real Madrid – was behind it.

“Why criticism in Spain? Do you know?” said Mourinho. “I know – because there is somebody very powerful that is thinking about jumping again.

“But it’s very difficult to jump when you have the best goalkeeper in the world in front of you.”

Square Enix removes three mobile games in Belgium after loot box ban https://briefnews.eu/square-enix-removes-three-mobile-games-in-belgium-after-loot-box-ban/ https://briefnews.eu/square-enix-removes-three-mobile-games-in-belgium-after-loot-box-ban/#respond Thu, 22 Nov 2018 03:24:08 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/square-enix-removes-three-mobile-games-in-belgium-after-loot-box-ban/

Square Enix will no longer offer three of its mobile games in Belgium after the country banned loot boxes this year. You’ll no longer be able to pick up Mobius Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts Union X or Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia in the nation.

The publisher said in a statement in the games it’s removing them because of “the present uncertain legal status of ‘loot boxes’ under Belgian law,” according to the Guardian. Back in April, Belgium’s gaming commission declared that loot boxes, which reward players with randomized in-game items, in some games broke gambling rules. The move has affected several titles, including Guild Wars 2, while the Netherlands has also banned them in certain games.

Some other countries and jurisdictions are considering steps to regulate loot boxes. While the UK has determined that they aren’t a type of gambling if players can’t sell the virtual items they receive for real money, it’s keeping tabs on the issue.

With that in mind, it’s worth considering how publishers might react if key markets such as the UK or the US banned loot boxes. While they might not completely remove titles that use them, they’d certainly have to retool their games, particularly if they adopt a free-to-play business model that relies on such microtransactions or include a pay-to-win aspect.

Belgium: Terror following knife attack in Brussels – is it safe to travel? https://briefnews.eu/belgium-terror-following-knife-attack-in-brussels-is-it-safe-to-travel/ https://briefnews.eu/belgium-terror-following-knife-attack-in-brussels-is-it-safe-to-travel/#respond Tue, 20 Nov 2018 10:27:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/belgium-terror-following-knife-attack-in-brussels-is-it-safe-to-travel/

Belgium’s capital city Brussels is on lockdown after a man stabbed a police officer early this morning. This is the latest travel advice.

The official was stabbed in the neck by a knife-wielding attacker who reportedly yelled “Allahu Akbar” before launching the attack.

The incident took place in front of a city centre police station near the Grand Place, a world-renowned tourist attraction in Belgium.

The police officer was stabbed around 5.30am local time this morning.

Ilse Van De Keere, a police spokesman, said the suspect was shot and wounded by another officer.

She said there is no current confirmation of the attack being a terror incident and investigations are ongoing.

Police would not confirm witness reports the suspect said “Allahu Akbar” when he attacked.

Terrorists are “very likely” to try to carry out attacks in Belgium, said the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

They warn: “Attacks could happen anywhere, including on public transport and transport hubs and in other places visited by foreigners.

“You should be vigilant in public places and follow the advice of local Belgian authorities.”

There have tragically been a number of high profile terrorist attacks across Belgium in recent years.

In May this year, two police officers and a passer-by were killed in a shooting in the city of Liège in a suspected terrorist incident.

In 2017, a man attacked two soldiers with a knife in Brussels in August, and in June Belgian security forces helped prevent a suspected terrorist attack at Brussels central station.

The FCO encourage Britons to be “vigilant at all times,” for their own safety.

The website details advice to tourists heading abroad who are concerned.

They advise looking out for “anything suspicious and if you see anything report it to the local police immediately – many terrorist attacks are foiled by the vigilance of the public.”

The FCO also suggest being “vigilant in public areas and places that attract foreigners and westerners – eg hotels, restaurants, bars and crowded places like markets, malls or sports events. Always be aware of your surroundings.”

It’s also important to be vigilant at the airport. “In airports, minimise the time spent in the public area, which is generally less well protected,” said the FCO.

“Move quickly from the check-in counter to the secured areas. Upon arrival, leave the airport as soon as possible.”

The most dangerous countries in the world have recently been revealed.

Sizzling Vettel tops Belgium GP practice https://briefnews.eu/sizzling-vettel-tops-belgium-gp-practice/ https://briefnews.eu/sizzling-vettel-tops-belgium-gp-practice/#respond Sat, 25 Aug 2018 15:43:04 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sizzling-vettel-tops-belgium-gp-practice/ SEBASTIAN Vettel posted the fastest time in third and final practice for the Belgian Grand Prix ahead of qualifying.

Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen was second, ahead of Formula One championship leader Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes.

Vettel was 0.063 quicker than Raikkonen and 0.137 ahead of Hamilton, who won the last two races to take the championship lead and move 24 points in front of Vettel.

However, Ferrari has looked strong so far in Spa, topping all three practice runs — with Vettel quickest in P1 and Raikkonen best in P2.

It was a tough day for Australia’s Daniel Ricciardo, who suffered a mechanical issue in Practice 1.

Raikkonen gave Ferrari its last victory here in 2009. Mercedes has won for the past three years.

The P3 session was interrupted near the end after McLaren driver Stoffel Vandoorne span off after trying to overtake the Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas.

“What the hell was that Mercedes doing? He just pushed me onto the grass,” an irate Vandoorne said on team radio.

Fighting to keep his McLaren seat next year, Vandoorne was last in all three sessions.

However, it appeared Bottas was at fault for not giving Vandoorne room as he approached on his left.

“I didn’t see him,” Bottas told his team.

Following a review by race stewards, Bottas was deemed to be driving in a “potentially dangerous” manner and given a reprimand. He escaped a penalty because the incident was not considered to be intentional.

Governing body FIA said Bottas “conceded the incident was his fault” and that “he had not seen (Vandoorne) approaching, despite checking his mirrors and having heard a warning message from his team.”

A penalty would have effectively made little difference, anyway. Bottas, who finished fourth in P3, starts the race from the back of the grid after being penalised for too many engine-part changes.

Ryanair strikes to cause CHAOS as 600 flights to Spain, Portugal and Belgium cancelled https://briefnews.eu/ryanair-strikes-to-cause-chaos-as-600-flights-to-spain-portugal-and-belgium-cancelled/ https://briefnews.eu/ryanair-strikes-to-cause-chaos-as-600-flights-to-spain-portugal-and-belgium-cancelled/#respond Wed, 25 Jul 2018 04:35:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ryanair-strikes-to-cause-chaos-as-600-flights-to-spain-portugal-and-belgium-cancelled/

Thousands of Brits will have their travel disrupted, as the mass walkout comes at peak holiday season, with schools having just broken up for the summer.

Meanwhile, Italian cabin crews will strike today, but the budget airline says flights will not be affected.

Ryanair said those travelling have been contacted and “90 percent of affected passengers have been transferred” to another flight.

The Irish company said: “Ryanair has added extra Customer Service staff to help re-accommodate/refund these customers over the next seven days.

“Any Ryanair customers travelling to/from Belgium, Portugal or Spain on Wednesday or Thursday, who have not received an e-mail or text SMS, should expect that their flight will operate as scheduled and should check-in to their departure airport a normal.”

The strikes follow disputes over working conditions and pay, as living costs increase, but a Ryanair spokesman has called the walkout “unnecessary”.

Chief marketing officer Kenny Jacobs said: “Ryanair sincerely apologises to our customers for these disruptions which we have done our utmost to avoid.

“Given that Ryanair cabin crew enjoy great pay-up to €40,000 per year, industry-leading rosters (14 days off each month), great sales commissions, uniform allowances and sick pay, these strikes are entirely unjustified and will achieve nothing other than to disrupt family holidays, and benefit competitor airlines in Belgium, Portugal and Spain.”

But cabin crew unions have hit back, saying there is a disconnect between what Ryanair says employees get and the reality.

Sitcpla cabin crew union spokesman Antonio Escobar said: “In Italy, some 100 Ryanair cabin crew sent Ryanair a letter to claim the difference between the €17,000 they’ve earned and these €40,000.

“The large majority of cabin crew don’t have a base salary, which means if you don’t fly you don’t get paid.”

Unions want the airline to give contractors the same work conditions as its own employees.

Mr Escobar said: “On board the same plane, for instance, a Madrid to Charleroi flight, you will find four cabin crew members doing the same job, but none will be earning the same.”

This is because some are employed by Ryanair and others by temporary working agencies.

Unions are also calling for staff to be employed according to the national legislation of the country they operate in, rather than that of Ireland, which they currently are.

Earlier this month, a Dutch appeals court ruled that Ryanair employees based in the Netherlands must be covered by Dutch law.

Portuguese SNPVAC cabin crew union is anticipating “strong participation” in the strike, according to spokesman Bruno Fialho.

He said the joint strikes would “stop Ryanair from using other crews to replace those striking, as was the case during the last strike in Portugal”.

These cabin crew walkouts follow three Irish pilot strikes this month, the last of which took place yesterday.

More strikes will follow, with 60,000 ground staff in Spain announce their plans for industrial action in August.

Ryanair said it expects yet more strikes over the summer “as we are not prepared to concede to unreasonable demands that will compromise either our low fares or our highly efficient model”.

The company on Monday reported first-quarter profit down more than a fifth due to higher fuel costs and pilot salaries.

Queen Mathilde of Belgium commands attention in bright red dress and matching hat https://briefnews.eu/queen-mathilde-of-belgium-commands-attention-in-bright-red-dress-and-matching-hat/ https://briefnews.eu/queen-mathilde-of-belgium-commands-attention-in-bright-red-dress-and-matching-hat/#respond Sat, 21 Jul 2018 18:06:52 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/queen-mathilde-of-belgium-commands-attention-in-bright-red-dress-and-matching-hat/

Queen Mathilde of Belgium, 45, was joined by her husband King Philippe, 58, and their four children Elisabeth, 16, Gabriel, 15, Emmanuel,12, and Eleonore, 10.

Belgian National Day celebrates the separation of the country from the Netherlands.

Mathilde chose a red lace dress with a nude underlay for the event. The dress featured three quarter length sleeves, and came to her knee.

She paired this with an extravagant wide brimmed hat, also red, worn to the side.

Matching her bag to her outfit, the Queen carried a small red clutch bag with a gold clasp.

A pair of red suede court shoes with clear detailing on the sides provided the final red touch.

As befitting her royal status, Mathilde wore a pair of cream gloves.

She added gold touches to the outfit to accessories, wearing a pair of brushed gold earrings and a gold bangle.

Her hair was swept up in to a chic updo, with a side parting hidden underneath her hat.

Mathilde added a pop of colour to her otherwise simple makeup look with a cherry red lipstick.

The Belgian Queen is a fan of vibrant colours, stepping out in a bright yellow dress earlier this month.

She wore the dress while visiting an Art Deco exhibition at the Villa Empain.

She wore a bright yellow dress which had a cut out pattern. A yellow lining could be seen underneath.

To offset the dress, Mathilde chose rose gold accessories – a slim belt and stiletto court shoes.

Despite the warm temperatures, she wore a pair of nude tights.

The Queen matched her outfit with her accessories, wearing a pair of bright yellow hoops and a chunky gold watch.

Villa Empain was a private house built between 1930-1934 by Swiss architect Michel Polak for Baron Louis Empain.

It is now the home of the Boghossian Foundation and is a centre of art and culture, hosting regular exhibitions.

Queen Mathilde is the wife of King Philipe, who become King after his father abdicated in 2013.

Mathilde is the first Belgian-born Queen of Belgium. Born to Jonkheer Patrick d’Udekem d’Acoz, who was of Belgian noble ancestry, and his wife, Countess Anna Maria Komorowska, she grew up on her family’s estate Castle Losange in Villers-la-Bonne-Eau in the Bastogne municipality of Belgium, near the Luxembourgish border.
