Russia is talking to Lebanon about Moscow’s plans for the mass return home of Syrian refugees, the Lebanese prime minister’s office said on Tuesday. Lebanon hopes the Kremlin’s initiative would tackle what Beirut calls a “displacement crisis.” The UN refugee agency UNHCR says there are about a million Syrians in Lebanon, around a quarter of its population, while the Lebanese government puts the number at 1.5 million. Russia last week said it had set up the Center for the Reception, Allocation and Accommodation of Refugees to help hundreds of thousands of refugees return home from abroad. Prime Minister-designate Saad al-Hariri discussed Russia’s plans with officials from the Russian embassy to Beirut on Tuesday, Reuters reported. Later this week, Russia’s special representatives will visit to continue talks, Hariri’s office said.

On demand and disc, we’ve got a big spring comedy and quietly effective political thriller. And finally, Criterion has unleashed (just in time for Barnes and Noble’s big 50% off sale) the must-have movie buff box set of the summer.

ON NETFLIX

The Voices: In which charming ol’ Ryan Reynolds is a likable guy who’s trying to romance a nice girl at work… oh, and his dog and cat are prodding him to add to the considerable stash of body parts in his apartment. This is a serial killer movie unlike any other, in which gleefully anything-goes director Marjane Satrapi (Persepolis) bounces a Day-Glo production design and a cheery tone against the darkest undercurrents of her story — not for the sake of cheap irony, but to underscore how we see violence on screen, and in our lives. The Voices is an exhilarating movie – primarily in its stubborn refusal to play it safe.

ON AMAZON PRIME

Our Nixon: After the Nixon administration toppled, the FBI confiscated over 500 reels of home movies shot by “the President’s Men” — specifically, John Erlichman, H.R. Haldeman, and Dwight Chapin. For over 40 years, they sat in a vault; in this 2013 essay film, documentarian Penny Lane (Nuts!) combines that remarkable footage, along with extended interviews, news footage, and audio from the notorious Oval Office tapes to create a compelling, witty, and acidly funny insider’s view of this weirdly fascinating presidency. The footage is candid and often peculiar, the archival clips enlightening (check out Dan Rather’s unequivocal praise for Nixon after his administration’s first year), and the audio, as we all know, is like a car wreck you can’t turn away from. And, y’know, it might be worth revisiting these days, no particular reason.

ON HULU

Go: Perpetually underrated director Doug Liman made this stop on his way from the low-budget Swingers to the franchise launching Bourne Identity, helming a gleefully energetic action/comedy with three interlocking stories. It was unfairly dismissed at the time as a Pulp Fiction rip-off, and while screenwriter John August undoubtedly mainlined a bit of Tarantino somewhere along the way, he and Liman’s picture has a comic ingenuity and spirit all its own. Bonus: early roles for Timothy Olyphant and (very briefly) Melissa McCarthy!

ON BLU-RAY / DVD / VOD

Blockers: This teen sex comedy was originally titled Cherries and concerned three dads trying to protect their daughters’ virginities, and yeah, I think we can all imagine how poorly that could’ve gone. Instead, under the sure hand of director Kay Cannon (and thanks to flipping one of the dads to a mom, played by Leslie Mann, who remains a treasure), Blockers is a sly subversion of the raunchy sex-com ethos, merging the expected parental panic – the scene of the ‘rents trying to decode a series of emojis is priceless – with gender commentary and the still-rare sight of unapologetically horny teen girls in a studio picture. Even better, and in contrast to most hard-R comedies of the Apatow era, its serious beats work; they’re earned, and genuine, and kind of wonderful. John Cena (whose proneness to waterworks is an excellent running gag) and Ike Barinholtz (really digging in to the lovable loser thing) match up with Mann’s energy, but the movie floats on the considerable charisma of young stars Kathryn Newton, Geraldine Viswanathan, and Gideon Adlon. (Includes audio commentary, deleted scenes, gag reel, “line-o-rama,” and featurettes.)

Beirut: So here’s one with a backstory: way back in the early 1990s, screenwriter Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton, the good Bourne movies) penned a script about a diplomat/fixer negotiating a delicate hostage swap, but it didn’t get made. In fact, it sat on a shelf for twenty-plus years before landing in the hands of director Brad Anderson (Session 9, The Machinist) and star Jon Hamm, and here we are. Some of the storytelling devices have gathered a bit of dust, but overall, it’s a primo piece of craftsmanship, full of narrative curveballs, crisply defined characters, and sharp dialogue; Rosamund Pike gets some good moments (and upturns some expectations), while Hamm is an ideal Gilroy sorta-hero. In short, it’s the kind of middlebrow, middle-budget, muscular, star-driven thriller studios used to make all the damn time – and they are missed. (Includes featurettes.)

ON BLU-RAY

Dietrich & von Sternberg in Hollywood: The cinephile box set of the season, compiling (in gorgeous hi-def) the collaborations of filmmaker Josef von Sternberg and his mesmerizing muse, German actress Marelene Dietrich. They made seven films together in six years, and six of them – Morocco, Dishonored, Shanghai Express, Blonde Venus, The Scarlet Empress, and The Devil is a Woman– are presented here, showcasing the flamboyantly theatrical style of Mr. von Sternberg and the enigmatic beauty of Ms. Dietrich. Shanghai Expressis my personal favorite, but your mileage may vary; there’s not a dud in the bunch, and there aren’t many filmmaking teams who so unfailingly brought out each other’s best. (Includes new and archival interviews, new documentaries, video essay, vintage publicity short, radio adaptation of Morocco, and deleted scene from The Devil is a Woman.)

‘Beirut’ Screenwriter Tony Gilroy Isn’t Impressed by Good Lines [Interview] https://briefnews.eu/beirut-screenwriter-tony-gilroy-isnt-impressed-by-good-lines-interview/ https://briefnews.eu/beirut-screenwriter-tony-gilroy-isnt-impressed-by-good-lines-interview/#respond Sat, 14 Apr 2018 06:39:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/beirut-screenwriter-tony-gilroy-isnt-impressed-by-good-lines-interview/ Tony Gilroy interview

27 years after Tony Gilroy wrote Beirut, it’s finally reaching theaters. Long before his time on the Bourne franchise, directing Michael Clayton and Duplicity, and his work on Rogue One: A Story Wars Story, Gilroy penned a story about Mason Skiles (Jon Hamm), a troubled, grieving, and alcoholic negotiator who returns to Beruit 10 years after a personal tragedy to negotiate the freedom of a CIA agent and former friend.

When Gilroy first wrote the script for Interscope, the thriller garnered the attention of movie stars and drew some controversy, but ultimately, the expensive project went unmade. Four or five years ago, there was new interest in Beirut, so Gilroy spent a week or two revising the script before the director behind Session 9 and Transiberian, Brad Anderson, went to shoot the movie in Morocco.

Gilroy also had the chance to look back on some old writing of his, to see how his writing had changed. It was an experience the writer and director recently told us about in a wide-ranging interview about mistakes young writers make, great dialogue, writing “the best of the best” type of characters, why he doesn’t want to write true stories, and more.

Below, read our Tony Gilroy interview.

Beirut is another one of your stories where a part of the thrill comes from watching a character who’s good at their job. For you, where does that joy come from, watching someone who is really effective at what they do?

I don’t know what the origin of that pleasure is. I don’t know what the attraction is. It might be generational [Laughs]. One of my father’s great credits was The Fastest Gun Alive, but it’s like, “Well, who is he?” “Well, he’s the fastest gun alive.” There’s something about great competence that’s interesting. You probably know I wrote this movie a long, long time ago, and this was really how I learned how to be … I’ve done a lot of journalistic kind of movies where there’s a lot of research, and this was the one that really taught me how to do that in a fundamental way.

If you’re talking about somebody who’s the best bricklayer who ever lived, or the best figure skater who ever lived, or whatever, you get to learn a tremendous amount. That’s part of the job that I really like, but I don’t know. Also, you have to show them doing the thing. I could introduce you in a movie and say, “Oh, my god. This is the greatest getaway driver in the western hemisphere,” and if you say it loud enough and clear enough, all of a sudden, you’re the greatest getaway driver in the western hemisphere, before I even see you in a car. It just works.

Then there’s the challenge of showing they’re the greatest getaway driver in the world.

You have to prove it. You’ve got to show your work, eventually.

I feel like you we a lot of movies or shows where everyone says so-and-so is such a great writer, but they rarely show you why.

That never works. That never, ever works. I don’t like movies about writers. Gambling is really hard. They did beat it in Rounders. The trick they found in Rounders really won the day, but my father used to write a lot of gambling scripts. My father was a huge gambler, but he really thought that very few people ever captured it. It’s really tedious in a way. Yeah, it’s like, “Who’s a great writer? Okay, okay. Exciting. Yeah. Write your way over the wall…”

[Laughs] I know you wrote the script for Beirut about 25 years ago, so when the project was revived, what was your initial reaction to reading a 25-year-old script of yours?

I was impressed with the research when I went back and checked all the research and had the benefit the internet at that time. Also, there had been a lot of other journalism and books that had been written about the period of time that had closed down the verdict on a lot of things that were kind open-ended back in 1991. So, I was happy with the scholarship, and I was happy with the plotting and the ambition of it, but it was a little bit easy. There was too much of me in it. When you’re a young writer, a lot of times you can really feel the writer in it, like you’re going for a line, or you’ve got a hook on a scene, and you’re kind of warping a scene so that you look cool.

I’ve had all of that effectively beaten out of me over the years. You just humble yourself time after time, where you have scenes shot that you’re just groaning. “Why did I write that, and why doesn’t he shut up?” You get quieter. You get humbler. You get much more trusting the actors and the stillness. You get much more honest. So, I really didn’t change very much, and I was really pleased to be collaborating with this very young, energetic, writer who had done all the research for me. I was really pleased to go in and put a quieter, I think a much more real and, not actor-proof, but actor-friendly and director-friendly, pass on it.

What else does making a script more actor-friendly and director-friendly involve?

Making it honest, instead of tilting a scene so that you have something that’s jazzy happen, or tilting a scene around a line. “Gotta have a great line, and I want to have this great line at the end of the scene.” I mean, most of everything that we do is scene work. You write 70,000,000 scenes in your life, and the idea of buttoning up scenes and rounding them out is something that you get rewarded for when you’re young. Certainly, as I was coming up in the ’80s and ’90s, and desperate to be a screenwriter, that was really the style of the time: round everything out, button the scenes. It’s not what life is like, and it’s not good drama, and it puts a strain on everybody, and you’d go into rehearsals with actors, and you’d watch actors…

Before I was directing, you’d watch actors try to strain to get to certain moments, and you’re frustrated, and they’re frustrated and, finally, you start to realize, “My God. Their navigation systems are usually pretty accurate.” You quiet things down and let truth play, and rely on the camera more. Just try to be honest and always ask really difficult questions in the scenes if there’s something that’s bothering you, doesn’t seem quite right. Well, you better answer that question, because it’ll always be wrong.

You mentioned wanting to tilt a scene around a line early on in your career. Do you ever have lines in mind before writing a scene, or do the most memorable lines usually come more naturally?

I’ve never had a line before a scene, but I’ve been in scenes and I’ve written a lot of scenes where there’s a great line, and you just get rid of it because it’s killing you. As a director of my own work, a lot of times … not a lot of times, but it is certainly enough times, there’s been a line in a scene and, in rehearsal, or at the morning before you start the scene, or talking to the actor and say, “Look, this line, here. I don’t wanna hear it. It’s right on the edge of being too much. Take the piss out of this line. Take me out of this. If I hear me in this scene, if I start to feel like I’m in the scene, I’m gonna do something else. So, let’s do everything you can to not lean into that.” I’m hyper-conscious about trying not to have lines where you just feel like the writer is just teeing up. It’s like playing golf where you’re only using the driver. It’s like, “Let me tee up on the green.” If you’re listening and you’re really hard on yourself, I think you get quieter and more natural as time goes on. Good lines don’t impress me that much anymore.

No?

No, no. I mean, every now and then you get one that does everything you want for it. It’s quiet, and it resonates, and it does everything. Every now and then, there’s this one, and you just go, “Oh, thank you,” and it has everything. It’s quiet. It’s real. It’s poignant. It sounds good. Everybody looks good, but I don’t know. If people are paying attention to lines, then they’re not in the story.

‘Beirut’ Trailer: Jon Hamm Tries to Save A Life https://briefnews.eu/beirut-trailer-jon-hamm-tries-to-save-a-life/ https://briefnews.eu/beirut-trailer-jon-hamm-tries-to-save-a-life/#respond Fri, 12 Jan 2018 04:23:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/beirut-trailer-jon-hamm-tries-to-save-a-life/ Beirut trailer

Jon Hamm and Rosamund Pike, two talented actors who deserve a lot more work, star in Beirut, a new drama from Session 9 director Brad Anderson. The first Beirut trailer offers a pulse-pounding look at the film.

Jon Hamm delivered a consistently fantastic performance for years on Mad Men, and Rosamund Pike performed jaw-dropping work in Gone Girl, yet neither of these actors seem to have quite as big a career as they deserve. Now, Hamm and Pike are together in Beirut, a new thriller from Brad Anderson, the filmmaker behind Session 9 and The Machinist. The script comes courtesy of Tony Gilroy, who also wrote the Bourne trilogy and Michael Clayton. The first Beirut trailer can be seen below.

Beirut trailer

This is a fairly intense trailer. It’s also a bit…muddled? There’s a lot of information here, to the point where entire plotlines are literally being spelled out in words across the screen (THE AMERICANS WANT TO KEEP THEIR SECRETS, THE ISRAELIS WANT TO RAISE THE STAKES!). That said, Anderson is an impressive filmmaker – Session 9 remains one of my all-time favorite horror movies, although Beirut looks very far removed from that. In the film, which is set in the 1980s, Hamm plays a former diplomat still grieving the death of his family. He gets called back into action to help rescue a former colleague. Pike plays an undercover CIA agent, who, from the looks of this trailer, spends a good portion of the movie lounging around, saying droll things and shooting cutting glances at people.

Beirut was originally announced back in 2015, when it was known by the title High Wire Act. The film began shooting in 2016, which might raise an eyebrow or two – usually when a movie takes this long to find its way to the screen, there are some issues. Or I could just be reading too much into things, and Beirut could turn out to be a top-notch political thriller. We shall see!

In addition to Hamm and Pike, Beirut also stars Dean Norris, Shea Whigham, Larry Pine, and Mark Pellegrino. Here’s the official synopsis:

A U.S. diplomat (Jon Hamm) flees Lebanon in 1972 after a tragic incident at his home. Ten years later, he is called back to war-torn Beirut by CIA operatives (Rosamund Pike) to negotiate for the life of a friend he left behind.

Beirut will premiere at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival this month before being released in theaters on April 13, 2018.

  • Saad al-Hariri returned to Lebanon’s capital.
  • He recently resigned as the country’s prime minister during a broadcast from Saudi Arabia.
  • Rumors that he was forced to quit began spreading.

BEIRUT (Reuters) – Saad al-Hariri returned to Beirut on Tuesday for the first time since he resigned as Lebanon’s prime minister in a broadcast from Saudi Arabia and plunged his country into political crisis.

Hariri’s sudden resignation on Nov. 4 thrust Lebanon to the forefront of regional tussle between the Sunni monarchy of Saudi Arabia and Shi’ite Islamist Iran, whose powerful Lebanese ally Hezbollah is part of the government.

Hariri was greeted by members of the security forces as he disembarked from a jet at Beirut airport, live footage of his arrival showed.

Hariri, a long-time ally of Saudi Arabia, cited fear of assassination and meddling by Iran and Hezbollah in the Arab world in his resignation speech. The move caught even his aides off guard, and politicians close to him say Riyadh forced him to quit and held him in Saudi Arabia.

Riyadh and Hariri have denied this.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun has refused to accept the resignation until Hariri returns to present it in person.

Earlier, Hariri met Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Cairo, saying after the meeting that he would announce his “political position” in Lebanon.

In a Nov. 12 interview from Saudi Arabia with Future TV, a station affiliated with his political party, Hariri said he would return to Lebanon to confirm his resignation.

But he also held out the possibility of withdrawing it if Hezbollah respected Lebanon’s policy of staying out of regional conflicts such as Yemen.

Since then, he has continued to work as a writer, broadcaster and public speaker. John, 60, lives in London with his wife Anna and their daughter Lydia.

“I began my working life as a newsroom assistant on the foreign desk of ITN. I wrote news scripts, supervised video packages and witnessed inspirational reporters like Sandy Gall preparing for his foreign assignments. I was hoping for a posting to one of our foreign bureaus, where I could find a good story to report on. I got stationed in Beirut.

“After a quiet month, British people – including Brian Keenan – had been taken hostage, and like other bureau people, I decided to leave.

“I got ambushed 10 minutes away from the airport when a car screeched to a halt in front of me and out jumped a guy with a Kalashnikov rifle. He dragged me over to his car, threw me in the back, blindfolded me and that was it for five years.

“I was held in solitary confinement for months in a damp, iron-gated cell with no daylight. I was terrified. They later took me to another prison where I was held with a man who had wild piercing eyes and a huge mad beard. It was Brian Keenan and together we were held in various prisons for the next four years. I cannot imagine anybody on the planet as a better companion during that time.

“During my final year in captivity, Brian was released, and with the luxury of a radio I could hear the support from Jill Morrell [John’s former girlfriend] and the Friends of John McCarthy Campaign.

“After my release I began a long association with Radio 4, presenting, and I wrote books, made TV documentaries and undertook public speaking engagements.

“More recently, I wrote You Can’t Hide The Sun, the story of the Palestinian people of Israel. It meant travelling from the Lebanese border almost to the tip of Sinai and on to Jerusalem. Other highlights include the radio series In the Prince’s Footsteps, which followed Albert, Prince of Wales’s 1862 royal tour to The Holy Land, Syria and the Greek Islands.

“On a visit to Lebanon last year to make Paying For The Hostage, I heard a heartbreaking story from a mother whose son, a Lebanese soldier, had been kidnapped. I thought, ‘This is how it must have been for my mother.’ She died during my time in captivity.

“My daughter, Lydia, was six when she discovered my story from school friends. I told her the rest. She’s now 11.

“I’m planning a TV feature about the history of the River Devon in Suffolk, and there’s a Radio 4 Extra show planned about Michael Palin’s radio career.

“I’ve kept in touch with everyone – Jill, Brian, Terry Waite and Terry Anderson; sadly the two Americans, Tom Sutherland and Frank Reed, who were held hostage with us, have since died.

“Brian and I travelled to Belfast recently, where I learned more about his life. We often spoke of Van Morrison when we were in prison and it led to my documentary, Van Morrison And Me, which was broadcast earlier this year.

“During the dark days, Brian and I developed a valuable friendship. It really is extraordinary!”
