Henna Choi
Henna Choi left a high-paying job as a lawyer to pursue making TikTok videos.

  • Henna Choi, 28, left a high-paying job as a lawyer to pursue making TikTok videos.
  • She shares videos about her everyday life on TikTok. Her account has more than 470,000 followers.
  • Choi said her family's support has allowed her to nurture her creativity and follow her passions.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Henna Choi, a 28-year-old lawyer who is on leave from her job. It has been edited for length and clarity.

As the firstborn daughter of an immigrant family who comes from a culture where education is the most revered thing, I always knew I was going to have a big job. What I didn't know was that I would leave that job after just two years.

I always felt the internal pressure that so many children of immigrants feel. I had to succeed, and I had to succeed in the ways that my parents would find impressive — basically, I had to be a doctor, lawyer, or engineer. I chose law because I figured that's what I would be best at.

In undergrad, I double-majored in women and gender studies and equity studies, with a focus on race and disability. I figured that I could use my platform as a lawyer to help people who really needed it, but that's not quite how it worked out.

Becoming a lawyer was expensive

I have almost $ 80,000 in student loans. The pressure to find a high-paying job to pay off your student loans is enormous, so when I was offered a job that gives commission on top of base pay, I took it right away.

I was still able to help disabled people in my position, but it wasn't what I dreamt of when I was in law school. Between the reality of how little I enjoyed being a lawyer and my mental-health struggles with depression, I knew it was time to take a break — especially since I hadn't been on a vacation in years after going straight from undergrad to law school.

Now that I'm on a break from my job, I'm freaking out

This is the first time in my adult life I've had this much unstructured time for myself. In the back of my mind, I keep reminding myself that I can go back to the structure and safety of my life as a lawyer, but something is pulling me in another direction.

The thing is, I've always wanted to do something creative for work. As a child, I wanted to be an artist.

A few months ago, I found a creative outlet that really worked for me: TikTok. I share videos of my everyday life as a self-described "depressed lawyer," and I have more than 470,000 followers now. My success on TikTok has made me feel like maybe I can do what I want with my life — or at the very least, I can try to. There's so much uncertainty in my life, but there's also excitement and beauty like I've never experienced before.

It's terrifying to leave a secure, high-paying job, and I wouldn't be able to do it without my family

They've been so supportive of me taking a leave from my job and of the content I post on TikTok, even though my upbringing and our family relationships are sometimes the source of my content. They watch my videos every day and we talk about what I share. It's kind of wild, but it's also very simple: they just want to see me happy.

I thought I had to be an extremely successful person within the narrow boundaries of what society sees as successful for them to be supportive, but that's not true at all. They want what's best for me, even if that means not being a lawyer anymore.

The financial aspect of taking leave is definitely stressful, but I live in Canada, and I'm lucky to be able to partake in the country's unemployment benefits. I make the rest work through savings and a little bit of family support.

If my younger self could see me now, her first question would be, "What do Mom and Dad think?" It's so nice to think I could answer that with the truth: They're being genuinely supportive and allowing me to feel safe enough to take this chance.

I'm trying to nurture the creative soul inside of me instead of suffocating it

When I tried to stuff down my creativity and desire to be a good lawyer, I was deeply unhappy, and it took a serious toll on my mental health. Not being who you really are is painful to live with every day. I think my inner child would be proud. She always wanted to be an artist.

I don't know what's going to come next. I don't know if I'm going to return to my life as a lawyer or if I'll make it in the world as a creative person, but I do know I have to try. I was tired of fighting with myself. Going forward, we're on the same team.

I was raised to think quitting is terrible and you have to finish what you started, but I realized that allowing yourself the space to change your mind is so empowering. It's powerful to choose what you want your life to be like. Quitting something that isn't working for you is a good thing. Trying for something new is even better.

Former President Donald Trump and New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman.

  • Donald Trump once said New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman was like his "psychiatrist."
  • Haberman said that while Trump treats many people like his psychiatrists, "almost no one really knows him."
  • Haberman covered Trump's presidency extensively and interviewed him for her forthcoming book.

Former President Donald Trump said reporter Maggie Haberman was like his "psychiatrist" during one of their interviews, according to Haberman's new book.

Haberman, a White House correspondent for The New York Times, conducted a series of interviews with Trump for her upcoming book, "Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America."

"I love being with her, she's like my psychiatrist," Trump told his aides during one of their interviews while he gestured to Haberman, according to an excerpt of the book published in The Atlantic.

Haberman wrote that it was an insightful but "meaningless line, almost certainly intended to flatter," per The Atlantic.

"The reality is that he treats everyone like they are his psychiatrists—reporters, government aides, and members of Congress, friends and pseudo-friends and rally attendees and White House staff and customers. All present a chance for him to vent or test reactions or gauge how his statements are playing or discover how he is feeling," Haberman wrote, according to the excerpt.

The Times reporter, who covered Trump's presidency extensively, also wrote that she was often asked to "decipher" Trump's actions, "but the truth is, ultimately, almost no one really knows him."

"He works things out in real time in front of all of us. Along the way, he reoriented an entire country to react to his moods and emotions," Haberman wrote, per The Atlantic. "Some know him better than others, but he is often simply, purely opaque, permitting people to read meaning and depth into every action, no matter how empty they might be."

Seeking emergency medical care in the US after a sexual assault can incur hefty hospital bills that may deter assault reporting and compound victims’ trauma, according to a new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

On average, hospital emergency departments charged $ 3,551 for urgent medical care coded as caused by sexual violence. People who were sexually assaulted while pregnant faced even steeper bills, with an average of $ 4,553. Uninsured victims or those who chose to pay themselves were served bills that averaged $ 3,673. Even those with private insurance faced burdensome bills; the study found that insured victims paid an average of 14 percent of their bills out-of-pocket, which for the average bill would work out to nearly $ 500.

“Emergency department charges may discourage the reporting of rape and seeking of medical care for both short-term and long-term sequelae of sexual assault,” the authors caution. “Incurring such charges may further harm survivors—even those with full insurance coverage—by serving to disclose a potentially stigmatizing event to parents, partners, or employers. Moreover, such bills may further traumatize survivors by suggesting that they are personally responsible for their assault.”

Migrants wait to be processed by Border Patrol agents near the end of a border wall Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2022, near Yuma, Arizona.

  • GOP governors have been sending migrants to eastern cities in protest of Biden's immigration policies.
  • The lawmakers say Biden's administration isn't doing enough at the border.
  • Former DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson said it's unfair to say the Biden administration is "lax" on immigration.

Former Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson said President Joe Biden's administration is being "unfairly" viewed as "lax" on immigration.

"This administration, I believe, unfairly, is perceived as lax on border enforcement. In fact, we are sending back over 100,000 people a month and have been for the last two years, over 2 million people. The lesson I learned managing this issue is you've got to repeat yourself maybe 25 times before anybody will listen to you," Johnson said in an interview with CBS's "Face the Nation" host Margaret Brennan on Sunday.

The former Obama administration official said that despite criticism from GOP governors on Biden's immigration policies, his administration has been sending people back at the border and advised the current administration to "continually stress that we are, in fact, with the machinery of government about as fast as we probably can. "

Johnson added that border security is a lot tougher since he served as DHS Secretary eight years ago.

"We were dealing principally with the Northern Triangle countries Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico. This problem has become hemispheric. In addition to those countries, you now have Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela who are not cooperating with us," Johnson said, adding that while border patrol capabilities have expanded, they're still struggling.

His remarks come as several GOP governors began sending migrants to northern US cities. Last week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis flew 50 migrants from Texas to Martha's Vineyard. In the past several weeks, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott sent around 8,000 migrants to Washington D.C. and another 2,200 to New York City.

The moves were efforts to protest Biden's immigration policies. Johnson called the migrant relocation efforts a "political stunt."

"Well, there's a right way and a wrong way to do that, Margaret," Johnson said. "The wrong way is on 20 minutes notice to send people by bus or airplane to the Edgartown Airport or to mass [avenue] in front of the vice president's residence without giving local resources, NGOs, shelter's local government an opportunity to plan for how they intend to feed and clothe and house migrants."

He added: "What the governors of Florida and Texas are doing, frankly, is a political stunt and treating people like livestock."

A growing number of Capitol rioters are being arrested for other crimes —from guns to drugs — which could mean more jail time: report https://briefnews.eu/a-growing-number-of-capitol-rioters-are-being-arrested-for-other-crimes-from-guns-to-drugs-which-could-mean-more-jail-time-report/ https://briefnews.eu/a-growing-number-of-capitol-rioters-are-being-arrested-for-other-crimes-from-guns-to-drugs-which-could-mean-more-jail-time-report/#respond Sun, 18 Sep 2022 14:52:50 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/a-growing-number-of-capitol-rioters-are-being-arrested-for-other-crimes-from-guns-to-drugs-which-could-mean-more-jail-time-report/ january 6 capitol trump stop the steal
Pro-Trump protesters gather in front of the Capitol in Washington, DC, on January 6, 2021.

  • Over 900 people have been arrested and charged in connection with the Capitol riot, according to Insider's database.
  • A growing number of them have subsequently been charged with additional separate crimes, CBS News reported.
  • The additional charges could complicate their efforts to get lenient sentences in their Capitol riot cases.

A growing number of Capitol rioters facing federal prosecution have been charged for other unrelated crimes — from domestic violence to gun and drug charges — according to a review of DOJ records published by CBS News.

In one instance, federal authorities said a Navy reservist went into "panic mode" after the Capitol riot and made $ 50,000 in firearms-related purchases, The Washington Post reported. Hatchet Speed, who was charged June in connection to the riot, was also indicted by a Virginia grand jury on three counts of unlawful possession of a silencer, per CBS News.

Kene Lazo, another Capitol rioter, was arrested by federal authorities in May 2021 for being part of the insurrection but was arrested again three months later in Virginia on domestic violence charges, CBS News reported.

Prosecutors used Lazo's domestic violence charge to get him a prison sentence, CBS News reported. In another case, police discovered guns and controlled substances when they searched Elias Costianes' Maryland home in connection to the riot, leading to further charges, the outlet reported.

Insider has reported that so far, 910 have faced charges in connection to the January 6 insurrection.

Michael Greenberger, a law professor at the University of Maryland told CBS News that the politicization of the prosecution of January 6 defendants could potentially increase their likelihood of ending up back in prison.

Additionally, these additional charges could make it harder for the defendants to get lenient sentences in their Capitol riot charges and could mean that other defendants could struggle to secure pretrial releases.

Greenberger told CBS News that Trump's rhetoric "leaves these bad actors with little doubt that they will ultimately be forgiven—if not lionized."

He continued, "Reality, however, is likely to settle upon those guys when they are ultimately sentenced or re-sentenced to many years in jail."

Former President Donald Trump and his allies have praised the rioters. Trump has previously said he's "financially supporting" the rioters and would "very seriously" consider pardons for those arrested in connection with the riot if he's re-elected in 2024.

"It's a disgrace what they've done to them," Trump said earlier this month.

White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham with then-President Donald Trump in August 2019.

  • Stephanie Grisham said she often saw former President Donald Trump "mishandle" secret records.
  • Classified documents are meant to be rigorously guarded, with secure rooms and safes.
  • Grisham said Trump was unconcerned by those rules and risks people without clearance seeing files.

Former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham said that she regularly saw former President Donald Trump "mishandle" sensitive records.

She told USA Today that this included seeing him putting records in his jacket pocket, risking staffers without the security clearance being able to see them.

Grisham told the outlet that this posed a potential national-security threat, but Trump either didn't realise or didn't care.

The USA today article also drew on officials from past White House administrations saying that Trump's handling of documents appeared to be a troubling breakdown in the protocols meant to kept such files safe.

Concerns about the former president's handling of federal records led to the FBI searching his Mar-a-Lago residence in August. They found more than 10,000 government documents, many of which were classified.

Some of the records were so sensitive that even agents needed special clearance to see them, according to Justice Department court documents.

Exactly how documents are required to be handled depends on their level of classification. The most secret ones are meant only to be viewed in secure facilities.

But, per court filings connected to the raid at Mar-a-Lago, highly classified records were instead kept mingled with other records, newspaper cuttings and scraps of Trump's handwritten notes.

Grisham has previously said that during Trump's time in office, records would "just disappear", and that he carelessly stored classified documents in boxes along with newspapers and miscellaneous paperwork.

She and other former aides have also previously spoken about Trump and his staff's treatment of official documents, including ripping, burning and flushing them.

Grisham joined the Trump campaign in 2016 and went on to serve in various roles, including Trump's press secretary and Chief of Staff and press secretary for First Lady Melania Trump.

She quit the administration on January 6, 2021, as the Capitol riot was unfolding, and has since become a vocal critic of the former president.

Trump in return has attacked Grisham and said that she is not telling the truth about him.

A Webb Telescope image is being used to push malware https://briefnews.eu/a-webb-telescope-image-is-being-used-to-push-malware/ https://briefnews.eu/a-webb-telescope-image-is-being-used-to-push-malware/#respond Tue, 06 Sep 2022 02:53:17 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/a-webb-telescope-image-is-being-used-to-push-malware/ One of the first images taken by the James Webb Telescope that was released by NASA was the "sharpest infrared image of the distant universe to date." It's a wondrous photo showing a detailed cluster of galaxies. It's also currently being used by bad actors to infect systems with malware. Security analytics platform Securonix has identified a new malware campaign that uses the image, and the company is calling it the GO#WEBBFUSCATOR.

The attack starts with a phishing email containing a Microsoft Office attachment. Hidden within the document's metadata is a URL that downloads a file with a script, which runs if certain Word macros are enabled. That, in turn, downloads a copy of Webb’s First Deep Field photo (pictured above) that contains as a malicious code masquerading as a certificate. In its report about the campaign, the company said all anti-virus programs were unable to detect the malicious code in the image.

Securonix VP Augusto Barros told Popular Science that there are a couple of possible reasons why the bad actors chose to use the popular James Webb photo. One is that the high-resolution images NASA had released come in massive file sizes and can evade suspicion in that regard. Also, even if an anti-malware program flags it, reviewers might pass it over since it's been widely shared online in the past couple of months.

Another interesting thing of note about the campaign is that it uses Golang, Google’s open-source programming language, for its malware. Securonix says Golang-based malware are rising in popularity, because they have flexible cross-platform support and are more difficult to analyze and reverse engineer than malware based on other programming languages. Like other malware campaign that starts with a phishing email, though, the best way to avoid being a victim of this attack is to avoid downloading attachments from untrusted sources.
