Some pro curlers had too much to drink

The team of Jamie Koe, Ryan Fry, Chris Schille and D.J. Kidby was kicked out of a tournament on Sunday after organizers received complaints from other curlers and fans about their behaviour on the ice. "They were extremely drunk and breaking brooms and swearing," Red Deer Curling Classic spokesman Wade Thurber told CBC Sports' Devin Heroux. "There was some damage in the locker room and other teams complaining about their stuff being kicked around in the locker room."

Fry won an Olympic gold medal in 2014 with skip Brad Jacobs. He still curls for Jacobs's team but was filling in as a spare for Koe at the World Curling Tour event, which had a $ 35,000 purse. In a statement he sent to Heroux, Fry apologized for his behaviour: "My actions were truly disrespectful and embarrassing — the committee was right to disqualify us from play."

For many, curling and drinking still go together. At your local curling club, a round of post-game beers can almost seem like part of the game itself. The Brier — Canada's men's championship tournament — was sponsored by Labatt for years. Before that, it was a tobacco company, and curlers back in the day could even smoke during games (check out this early-'70s clip from the CBC Archives).

But the old stereotype of the beer-drinking, dart-hacking curler is going the way of the corn broom. As the game becomes more professionalized (and more lucrative) at the elite level, most of today's top pros are handling themselves like other world-class athletes. They're training year-round and watching what they eat — and drink. But Sunday's incident is a reminder that curling hasn't gone completely dry.

Here are your weekend winners and losers

Winners: The Calgary Stampeders and Ottawa Redblacks

These two teams will meet in the 106th Grey Cup game next Sunday in Edmonton after their victories in the CFL's divisional finals. Ottawa overwhelmed Hamilton 46-27 in the East final on the strength of six touchdown passes by Trevor Harris — a CFL playoff record. Calgary is off to its third straight Grey Cup game after beating Winnipeg 22-14 in the West final.

Oddsmakers installed the Stampeders as four-point favourites and the pressure will be on them — they were also favoured to win in 2016 and '17 before losing to, respectively, Ottawa and Toronto.

Loser: People with weak stomachs

This is crazy. Thirty-three years to the day that Joe Theismann suffered the most famous injury in football history, an eerily similar (and gross) thing happened to the man playing the same position for the same team.

Washington quarterback Alex Smith broke two bones in his right leg after multiple players sacked him, leaving his ankle bent at an impossible angle. As if it wasn't strange enough already, Theismann was in attendance. "It was surreal," said the man whose career ended at the hands of Lawrence Taylor. "You see him go down in a pile and then there's a shot that showed his leg bent and I turned away right after that. I feel so bad for him."

Winners: Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints

The hottest team in football won its ninth game in a row, routing defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia 48-7. Brees threw four touchdown passes and now has 25 this year — against only one interception. If he keeps this up, pro football's all-time passing yards leader could finally snag his first NFL MVP award.

Winner: Brooke Henderson

OK, she didn't quite win. But with her 10th-place showing in the final LPGA tournament of the year, the 21-year-old Canadian finished second in the tour's season-long points competition. Henderson posted 11 top-10s and a pair of wins in 2018, including the crowning achievement of her career so far — her victory in the CP Women's Open. She's the first Canadian woman in 45 years to win her national golf championship.

Winners: LeBron James… and everyone laying eyes on those Heat uniforms

LeBron scored 51 last night in the Lakers' 113-97 victory over the Heat. It was his first win in Miami since he left there in 2014 to return to the Cleveland Cavaliers (who he then ditched — again — this summer to head to L.A.). It was the 13th 50-burger of James's career. We're all winners, though, for getting to feast our eyes on the Heat's Miami Vice-inspired uniforms:

Quickly…

Calgary's Olympic bid is officially dead. City council voted unanimously today to stop efforts to land the 2026 Winter Games. The move was basically a formality — the bid all but died last week when a clear majority of Calgarians who voted in a special plebiscite said no to the Games. Two bids are left in the running: Stockholm and a joint Italian bid from Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.

Members of a high school football team were charged in connection with an alleged gang sexual assault. Toronto police charged six students in connection with the alleged assault, which occurred at St. Michael's College School and was captured on camera and shared on social media. The Canadian Press reported that the charges filed today involved a group of students on the football team at the private, all-boys Catholic school allegedly pinning down another student in a locker room and sexually assaulting him with a broom handle.

Roy Halladay is on the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot. The late Toronto Blue Jays pitcher was one of 20 new candidates put up for consideration today. Mariano Rivera, the best closer of all time, was also added to the ballot. Halladay died just over a year ago at the age of 40 when the small airplane he was flying crashed. He won two Cy Young awards, including one with Toronto in 2003.

Remember When…

Today we're starting a new regular feature where we look back at a memorable moment in sports history.

So… remember when an American team won the Canadian Football League championship? It happened on Nov. 19, 1995, when the Baltimore Stallions beat the Calgary Stampeders to capture the Grey Cup. This affront to Canadian pride never occurred again and probably never will — by the time the '96 season kicked off, the CFL had ditched its ill-advised three-year experiment with U.S. expansion.

The Stallions drew well (none of the other four American teams really did) but their fate was sealed just weeks after the Grey Cup when the NFL agreed to let Art Modell move the Cleveland Browns to Baltimore, where they became the Ravens. The Stallions packed up for Montreal and became the Alouettes.

Anti-Islam Dutch politician Geert Wilders has criticized the arrest of Tommy Robinson, who was detained last week after drawing attention to a trial of an alleged Muslim child abuse gang,“ as an attack on free speech.

“I am here because I am shocked and outraged. What happened in the United Kingdom last week is an absolute disgrace,” the Dutch parliamentarian said while standing outside the UK Embassy in the Hague. “Freedom of speech is being violated all over Europe, and also in Britain. The lights of freedom are going out. Islam critics are taken to court, jailed, or targeted with fatwas.”

Calling Robinson a “freedom fighter,” Wilders called on the UK – “once a bastion of freedom of speech” – to stop “behaving like North Korea and Saudi Arabia” and “gagging its people” while Muslims are “pampered, protected and defended.”

Tommy Robinson was jailed on Friday, after live streaming from outside the courthouse in Leeds, initially for “intent to breach the peace,” though he did not have a chance to broadcast anything before he was hauled away. Robinson was then reportedly ordered by the judge to serve out a conditional 13-month sentence for contempt of court, handed down last year for a similar incident, in which he turned up outside a live court hearing as a “citizen reporter.”

Robinson is currently believed to be in Hull Prison, according to social media reports.

The judge ordered a media blackout of the coverage of the case Robinson attended “to avoid a substantial risk to the administration of justice in these proceedings.” More unusually, the details of the Robinson arrest and sentencing itself have also fallen under the media ban, at least until the end of the current trial.

This led to a situation where multiple outlets, including major UK media publications and RT, were forced to delete articles mentioning where he is being kept and for what crime, even if those pieces had no specifics about the proceedings he himself intended to report on.

This appears to have had the opposite of the intended effect, and not only have several outlets left their original pieces on the 35-year-old activist easily accessible, but hundreds of Robinson’s supporters held a widely-covered march on Downing Street on Sunday, demanding his release.

A petition asking Prime Minister Theresa May to free Robinson has collected over 400,000 signatures.

Robinson’s supporters, which included a UKIP MEP, have criticized the activist’s legally-mandated disappearance from news reports as “Orwellian.” Wilders, who was recently banned from entering the UK despite leading the largest opposition party in the Dutch Parliament, has made a diplomatic inquiry to British authorities over the jailing, particularly expressing concern about Robinson’s safety while in custody.

Britain’s behavior in the Skripal poisoning scandal is “a major danger to international peace,” believes Willy Wimmer, who held the vp position with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) assembly from 1994 to 2000, and who had previously served as state secretary to Germany’s defense minister.

“I think we would call this state a mafia state because it is against all European and international rules and regulations how the British government has behaved in a criminal case with regard to another country,” Wimmer told RT.

The UK has a history of pressing forward warmongering rhetoric, Wimmer said, recalling Britain’s decision to go to war in Iraq. “We, as Europeans, have an experience with the British. We only have to look back to Tony Blair. They lie from one war into the next one.” The long awaited Chilcot report, published in 2016, offered a damning critique of Blair, stating that he deliberately exaggerated the threat posed by the Iraqi regime and had relied on “flawed” intelligence.

“And that is why I think as long as the British don’t behave in a proper, legal, international way, I think we all should believe that this is another British lie, at least to go for war against Russia,” Wimmer added.

The former OSCE assembly vice-president said the EU’s position of standing in solidarity with the UK was standard allied behavior but warned the bloc might think twice before doing so again in the future.

“If a country asks for solidarity and for support, it is given by the others because otherwise you can’t run certain organizations like EU or NATO. What the British are doing – the government of Theresa May is exploiting this will of solidarity, which is a basic foundation of the European Union and NATO.”

“This is a blow to the European solidarity and this is a blow to the European Union as well as NATO. They will never do it again.”

Former Michigan Rep. Candice Miller, a Republican who chaired the committee that oversees the Office of Compliance for four years, says she consistently refused requests to settle sexual harassment claims — including one that appears to match the details of a complaint against Rep. John Conyers.

Conyers paid out more than $ 27,000 in 2015 to a female ex-employee who claimed she was repeatedly sexually harassed by the Michigan Democrat (Conyers has acknowledged the settlement, but denied the allegations). The payment appears to have been made by designating the woman as a “temporary employee” for three months, despite her being banned from the office, rather than through a treasury fund set up to handle cases like Conyers’. The Office of Compliance — where employees of Congress are able to lodge workplace complaints — is shrouded in secrecy and has refused thus far to answer further questions about the Conyers payment.

As chair of House Administration, Miller was in charge of signing off on settlements negotiated through the OOC. Miller said that although the name of the member involved in complaints she reviewed was kept hidden, she remembered rejecting a $ 27,000 payment around the time Conyers’ office made the settlement. The name of the complainant was also kept secret.

“I just wanted to make clear that somehow I did not approve this thing,” Miller told BuzzFeed News on Tuesday.

Miller was Administration Committee chair for four years and said she remembers three or four settlements for sexual harassment coming to her for approval. She said she “believe[s]” she rejected all of them.

“I was not going to be approving spending taxpayer dollars to protect members of Congress who were behaving like dogs. Let them pay for it out of their own darn pocket,” she said.

Congressional employees with complaints about members and other staffers must go through Congress’s Office of Compliance to handle their claims. If a settlement is reached, the OOC must send it to the chair and ranking member of the Administration Committee for approval. Names of both the accuser and the accused are not disclosed to the committee.

For this reason, Miller says she cannot say for sure which member was involved. In addition to the $ 27,000 settlement she remembers rejecting one that was a higher payout and one that was lower. She said in one case she ended up learning who was involved because the member’s chief of staff followed her chief of staff into a bathroom to try to lobby Miller to reverse her decision. (She declined to identify this member or the chief of staff.)

Conyers’ attorney Arnold Reed responded by emphasizing that Miller could not identify the member involved in the payment she rejected. “Her response is so vague she can’t pinpoint anything. I would love to comment on that, but I’m not able to comment on that because it’s too vague,” said Reed.

Reed said he could not say who approved the settlement outside of Conyers’ office.

“At this point I cannot really say who exactly it was approved by,” Reed said. “These things are run through the proper chains, the proper channels.”

Asked for comment, the Office of Compliance said they could not offer any information on rejected settlements due to federal law.

“The Congressional Accountability Act requires that the OOC maintain the confidentially [sic] of contacts and claims filed with the office that do not result in a final decision. The OOC cannot comment on whether matters have or have not been filed with the office,” Laura Cech, the Outreach and Publications Manager, told BuzzFeed News by email.

Conyers, the longest serving member of the House of Representatives, has been accused by multiple women of sexual harassment, but he has denied the allegations. A BuzzFeed News investigation uncovered a 2015 settlement over a wrongful dismissal complaint where an employee alleged years of sexual harassment.

An attempted 2017 lawsuit by another former staffer alleged sexual harassment, a hostile work environment, and retaliation, but the staffer stopped pursuing the case after a judge denied her motion to seal it.

On Tuesday, the Detroit News reported Deanna Maher, a former Conyers staffer, also alleged the congressman had sexually harassed her. Maher was the first woman to go on the record to describe her experience.

A high-profile Washington lawyer, Melanie Sloan, also spoke on the record to the Washington Post last week, and alleged mistreatment from Conyers.

Since BuzzFeed News’ initial report, the House Ethics Committee has launched an investigation into Conyers. The congressman stepped aside from his position as ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee on Sunday.

In addition to his powerful posts, Conyers is a Civil Rights icon and a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus.
