In the past decade, the well-worn automotive cliché Race on Sunday, sell on Monday has taken a surprising twist. Now, automakers have realized that they can race on Sunday and sell race cars on Monday. If you’ve got the money, Porsche, Lamborghini, Audi, Acura, Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren, Nissan, Bentley, and more have a race car for you—for around $ 500,000.

The rise in popularity of supercars worldwide has been paralleled by explosive growth in international GT3 class sportscar racing. GT3 cars are racing versions of the road-going supercars/GT cars that star in video games, YouTube channels, and print platforms. Instead of being built to a specific set of technical rules, in GT3 each make of car is benchmarked and then “performance balanced” by the FIA (the sporting organization that governs world motorsport) to create a relatively level playing field.

Studies show that increasing flexibility can eliminate generalized or specific body pain. If you have chronic pain Fibromyalgia or are trying re-condition your muscles, regular stretching will ease stress and tension due to work or other stressful issues in your life.

How Practicing Yoga Every Day Changed My Life

Since I’ve made Yoga a habit, I’ve noticed a change in my overall mood. A strong mindset is everything if you want to sustain a positive outlook on the things that happen to and around you.

Your mind is one of the most important assets and keeping it in the right place will help you get through those tough curve balls life can throw at us.

Six years ago, I started doing yoga each morning and now I do it morning and night for about ten to twenty minutes. Bottom line: Yoga can save your life, and it did mine. Thank goodness I did that because three years ago, my lung collapsed on a flight and almost died. It was traumatic and scary but I focused on doing as much breathing as my lungs allowed.

But even in the midst of the scary situation, my Yoga-strength lifted me up and out of that chair so I could get to a hospital. Looking back, I see how Yoga carried me through the trauma.

Mental and physical strength go hand-in-hand but mentally, you have to be in a good mind-frame to move through those hardships.

5 Ways Morning Yoga Benefits Your Health

We can’t know when tragedy or hardships will strike. To understand how Yoga can transform your life, you must first know how it benefits you.

1. Mental Clarity

If you’ve ever looked at an ocean on a windy day and noticed busy, angry waves, you’ve probably also noticed that you can’t see the ocean floor even near the shore.

When our minds are busy with angry or turbulent thoughts, you can’t think clearly. Our thoughts or thinking paths we return to can be so destructive that our ability to function and work efficiently becomes encumbered.

Trouble in your work life may arise and leave you mentally exhausted from trying to keep up with everything and everyone. Being overwhelmed all the time will cause a burnout. A burnout essentially is when your mind and body surrender to the exhaustion and they both shut down.

Morning Yoga creates stillness in the mind which then leads to calmness which then leads to happiness. Twenty minutes of a stretch routine to focus on diaphragmatic breathing as you move with your body will target your anxiety and depression.

You can get overwhelmed at any time but when you establish any routine, you’ll be compelled to create more healthy routines such as snacking healthier, doing things that decrease your stress, and pre-planning so you can effectively tackle that ever-changing to-do list.

2. A Level Mood

Have you ever flipped out on something small, almost unnecessary and asked yourself, “Why did I blow my lid over that?” Did you find yourself in that inevitable situation of needing to explain yourself after? I think to some degree, we’ve all been there at one time or another.

When we’ve entered ‘flip out’ mode or have become irritable, that’s a sign of an imbalanced emotional state of mind. You’ll wind up self-sabotaging without realizing it or feeling like you can’t get everything done on time and so, you lose it.

Our current moods reflect our emotional health and how we process life’s issues and mysteries.

Morning Yoga is a great way to strengthen your emotional health as it boosts your mood. Instead of keeping your emotions on a roller-coaster, do yoga, get off that up and down chaos and level out.

Think of your mood as a smooth ocean current, steady and still. A daily Yoga regimen will make you feel like you’re mind is floating on water.

3. Zap Cravings for Bad Foods

Those sugar cravings can arise at any time but between 2:00 and 4:00 P.M., they can sneak up on you. What you’re feeling is sudden fatigue or a dip in your alertness, which can occur if you’re not getting enough adequate sleep.

But if you do some Yoga poses such as lying down with your legs stretched up a wall or sitting on the floor and raising up your arms, those poses can help you eliminate those cravings.

4. Enhance Your Sleep Life

Developing a healthy sleep life, which includes morning and evening routines, are one of the ways morning Yoga can assist.

Balance means different things to everyone. Doing yoga each morning will enhance your sleep and aid in regulating brain activity.

When it’s night time, the brain produces melatonin. If you’re not allowing your brain the time to prepare for sleep, that can mess with your circadian rhythms and sleep cycles.

Doing Yoga each day is a wonderful form of meditation that directly affects your brain and mind simultaneously.

5. Sustain Stamina and Endurance Throughout the Day

Some people are more alert in the mornings while others are at night.

Yoga will sustain your physical stamina and endurance throughout your work day and all the way into the evening. This was one change I noticed the more I incorporated Yoga into my mornings.

As someone who has suffered chronic fatigue, Yoga rescued me and allows me to work hours on end and keep my focus on important tasks. I stopped having spurts of weakness in my muscles mid-day.

10 Yoga Poses for Beginners to Try

Now that you know how morning yoga can change your life, it’s time to get started or pick it back up again if you’ve stopped for a while.

Here are ten beginner poses (that will make a difference) for your flexibility, stress levels and overall well-being:

1. Cat and Cow

The Cat and Cow pose is perfect for restoring energy in your body and directly affects your spinal cord.

First, plant your knees and hands on the ground, all fours, making sure that your shoulders align with your wrists and knees align with your hips.

Inhale as you lift your head and buttocks while lowering your stomach. Exhale as you slowly lower your head, curve your spine and lower your tail bone.

Breathe as you do these movements. With each breath, you’ll feel more of a range of motion and stress melting away.

2. Plank

The plank pose is great for strength. To do it, lie down on a Yoga mat and press your hands on it. Make sure your hands are under your shoulders and your toes are touching the mat.

As if you are doing a push-up, lift your whole body off the ground, balancing on your hands which should align with your shoulders and your toes.

Your body should look like a long board. I hold that pose for thirty or more seconds.

3. Spinal Twist

For the spinal twist, another favorite pose, sit down in staff pose on your mat. Bend your right knee and position your right foot beside your left outer thigh, touching the floor.

Rotate your torso to the right and place your right hand on the floor behind your tail bone.

With your left arm, wrap it around your right leg. Repeat on the opposite side.

4. Downward-Facing Dog

With downward-facing dog, think of the position as making a triangle with your body, and the floor is the bottom.

Plant both feet close together and stick your buttocks up, the highest point of the triangle, and align your hands with your shoulders.

This stretch is great for the spine as well and will ease tension in your shoulder muscles.

5. Crescent Lunge

Make a ninety degree angle with your right knee. Stretch your left leg back behind you and reach your arms toward the ceiling.

This exercise promotes strength and tones the lower body.

6. Cobbler’s Pose

Sit on the floor and position your legs as if they are butterfly wings.

Your feet should be touching each other with your hands on your toes. Both of your knees should be bent.

Slowly lean forward as far as you can and hold the pose.

7. Warrior II

Think of the Warrior II pose as a lunge but with your arms stretched out, one in front and one behind you, forming a T with your upper body.

This pose addresses balance and flexibility.

8. Reclining Goddess Pose

Lie down on the floor and bring your feet together, bending both knees, forming a wide diamond shape with your legs. It helps to have a pillow under your knees and lower back for extra support.

Once you’re lying down in that position, rest your arms beside your hips.

9. Low Lunge

The low lunge pose is similar to the Warrior II pose.

Instead of forming a T with your upper body, stretch both hands up and over your head toward the ceiling.

One leg should be on the floor from the knee down and the other should be bent, forming half of a cube shape. This pose stretches your back and inner and outer thighs.

10. Bridge Pose

The bridge, I love, and I do this every morning and night after a long work day. The pose will align your spine and hips and addresses strength and balance.

Lie down on the floor or a mat and bend both knees, with feet planted on the ground.

Have your hands at your side and press them into the mat while raising your hips upward, creating a slight diagonal line with your torso, stomach and upper thighs. Keep your shoulders on the ground as much as you can.

Final Thoughts

Yoga is the best way to manage stress in your life. Stretching and using a Styrofoam roller will release the fascia in your muscles where the tightness and tension are stored.

Doing yoga in the morning is exercising your mind and body simultaneously. Diaphragmatic breathing in and out of poses regulates every system in your body, especially the central nervous system.

Your nervous system needs to be balanced and leveled so you can function at your optimal level.

If you’re functioning on overdrive or auto-pilot constantly, you will be mentally exhausted and drained more frequently, even without realizing it.

Morning Yoga is a resource for resetting all the systems in your body, stimulating blood flow and circulation, and recovering strained or tired muscles. It’s a way of eliminating those toxins we encounter in our environment as well.

Yoga has changed my life and I hope that after you read this, you try out a couple of these poses on your own and see how you feel.

The ultimate travel companion? A beginner’s guide to shopping for a camel https://briefnews.eu/the-ultimate-travel-companion-a-beginners-guide-to-shopping-for-a-camel/ https://briefnews.eu/the-ultimate-travel-companion-a-beginners-guide-to-shopping-for-a-camel/#respond Thu, 13 Sep 2018 00:49:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-ultimate-travel-companion-a-beginners-guide-to-shopping-for-a-camel/
Leon McCarron

They’re sturdy, resilient and reliable. Sure, the camel may well be the ultimate travel companion for desert adventures but, asks our featured contributor Leon McCarron, how do you even go about buying one?

A quick disclaimer: I have never bought a camel.

I am, you might say, an aspirational camel buyer. I’m in the market for one. And yet I live in London, so it probably won’t transpire any time soon. Instead I’ll continue to scheme, and dream, and wait for the day until I can legitimately call myself a camel owner.

A fair question might be: Why would someone in London think of buying a camel? Of course, I don’t want it here. It wouldn’t be particularly useful on Oxford Street on a busy Saturday—not that it would even be the oddest thing there. What I do aspire to, though, is to purchase a camel for another desert crossing at some point in the future.

To date, I’ve traveled on foot in the Gobi and the Empty Quarter, and in 2016, I spent a couple of weeks in the Southern Sinai desert. There, I walked with two Bedouin and a wonderful, friendly and sturdy camel called Harboush. Harboush carried all the kit for our team of four, as well as food for over a week and up to three days’ worth of water. He walked over cracked, hardened earth, through soft and rippled sand, and over sharp, fractured granite rock.

Never once did he complain, and our only falling-out was on the first evening when he got his nose into the box of cucumbers. In hindsight, it was a small tiff, and all was soon forgiven.

Firstly, Emma reports, one begins by deciding what sort of camel one wants—there are racing camels, breeding camels, camels for milking, and so on. In Sinai, a young male camel for the purpose of traveling long distances should cost between $ 600 and $ 1200 depending on age and pedigree. And if that sounds a lot, when I asked the same question of a friend in the UAE, I was told that $ 1000 wouldn’t even buy a blind, lame beast in the Gulf.

Next, you look at some of the physical elements. “A prospective buyer should stand behind the camel and watch it walk, checking the gait for irregularities,” she says. The ears and tail also have telltale signs about the health and strength of the animal and, as Emma wonderfully summarized in a translation for me: “It’s all about the hump.”

RELATED: Meet the men who spent 46 days in the wilderness (on purpose)

The hump is a fat store—not water, as is sometimes believed—and there should be space behind it. This indicates good breeding. Then there’s the question of personality. Camels will not display too many unique characteristics until about the age of four or five but after that, by watching how they interact with other camels (as well as humans) one should get an idea of whether it is generally cheery—like dear Harboush—or whether they are inherently grumpy, and therefore best passed on.

Perhaps the most romantic notion of all travel with animals is that of journeys on horseback; riding off into the sunset in Rockies or the Andes or, as adventurer Charlie Walker did, into the Mongolian grasslands. Charlie’s story is, in equal measures, exciting, and cautionary.

He had arrived in Ulaanbaatar, having walked for six weeks to get there from Beijing, and begun to dream of taking the weight off bloodied feet for the next stage. After asking around, he was driven out to a nearby village where, amid regular sessions of copious vodka-drinking, he was shown all manner of skinny and un-suitable Mongolian horses.

RELATED: What does it take to be a professional adventurer?

Around midnight, one was brought out that looked reasonably healthy (thought whether that impression had anything to do with the vodka consumed remains a mystery). A deal was struck but, when he returned in the morning to collect his new steed, he was presented with an entirely different horse—or, rather, a rather small and unimpressive-looking pony. He saddled up nonetheless, and set off.

As one might expect, the results were mixed. ‘Little Nicky’ was moody, and the best that can be said of their relationship is that they came to co-exist in relatively harmony—but in the knowledge that really neither was happy. Eventually, Little Nicky was stolen in the night by horse thieves (or, perhaps, pony thieves.) Charlie finished his walk on foot. Next time, Charlie said, he’d look for a stronger, friendlier Central Asian Horse. Or, take a motorbike.

I too have used horses on journeys in the past, with reasonable success, and I even once bought a donkey (though I never actually took it anywhere—that’s a story for another time).

But it’s still the camel that I have my heart set on. It seems, from the stories of friends and experts both here and elsewhere, that they key is to make sure the animal has been well-treated in the past, and that I (or you) as a new owner will continue to do that.

As a final tip—and this advice has cropped up numerous times, including from Sinai—when it comes to really assessing an animal, some people just know. I’m not sure if this means that there are imperceptible differences, or if it’s more of a mystical thing, but whatever it is, it sounds good.

Sadly, I don’t have the gift. I’m pretty sure of that. But, perhaps you do. And, if these stories have awakened a previously dormant camel-lover within you, then there’s only one way to find out. All I ask is that if you do go to buy a camel anytime soon, you take me with you.

I’m sure you’ve heard or read about the benefits of having a meditation routine, but you might still feel a bit hesitant to start because you find the whole concept of meditating too daunting, or you think that you need a lot of time to practice meditation.

Or maybe, you tried it a few times but it felt frustrating because you felt your mind overflown with thoughts and you might have felt overwhelmed, and probably told yourself that you’re not good at it.

In this article, I’ll share basic concepts about the real purpose of meditation, the benefits of incorporating this sacred practice into your life and simple tips to follow, so you can clear away the obstacles to your daily practice and learn some basic practicing exercises that will make a positive difference in your life.

Your body and mind on morning meditation

Meditation is a great tool to maintain a healthy balance of dialogue between your mind and your body. It is a simple technique that you can practice anytime and anywhere to alleviate stress. Just like physical exercise, the more you practice, the more benefits you’ll notice and the longer they will last – in both, mind and body.

A study by The American Psychological Association reported that 40 percent of the people they surveyed reported overeating or eating unhealthy foods as a result of stress, while 46 percent said they lie awake at night due to high stress levels.

Here’s the thing: you can focus on eating healthier, exercising more frequently, getting more sleep, using more natural products on our skin and at home, but if you don’t take care of your mind, you will still feel unbalanced in your life.

Meditation makes you have a cleaner body and clearer mind:[1]

A Harvard study showed that meditating can help decrease stress and anxiety levels which in turn will diminish inflammation in our bodies, reduce blood pressure, improve attention, sleep better, help us make smarter choices and regulate our thoughts, so we don’t jump so fast into reacting and judging.

Meditation helps to reduce stress, but a great benefit is that you will find peace within, the peace that spiritual traditions talk about that passes all understanding. One of the biggest goals of meditation is that you tune in with yourself and connect with your center, to get in touch with the energy of “oneness”.

Meditation is a way to get in the space between your thoughts. You have a thought here, a thought there and there’s little space between every thought that is called stillness – this space is the gateway to the infinite mind and that sense of divine connection.

Clearing the obstacles to morning meditation

The most common obstacles to meditation are the ones that we create ourselves, even if sometimes we are not aware.

Here are a few of the most common ways we tend to resist starting a new meditation practice and what to do about it:

“I don’t have time.”

There’s a misconception that you need to sit down to meditate for at least 30 minutes to an hour. You can start your daily practice investing anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour. You can set the rules for yourself! You just need to commit to starting.

Start small, and as you practice more consistently I can tell you that you’ll start adding more time to your practice.

“I can’t sit still.”

Do meditation your own way. Some people don’t like sitting but they enjoy walking meditations.

Dr. Kelly McGonigal suggests a 10 minute walking meditation involving 1 minute of paying attention to each of the feelings of your body while walking, the feeling of your breath, the sensations of air or wind on your skin, what you can hear, and what you can see.

“My mind never stops.”

It is normal to feel frustration while learning to meditate. Shifting your expectations will help in overcoming this obstacle.

Always focus on subtle incremental improvements. A great achievement is to gradually understand your mind and learn how to shift negative thinking.

Basic morning meditation techniques

Every good meditation practice begins with finding what works best for you. Remember, there is no right or wrong way to meditate since there are different techniques or styles of meditation.

Here are a few of them:

  • Breathing meditation – You can use this technique alone as a meditation to calm your mind and reduce distractions. Simply focus your attention on your breath, the inhale and exhale. This video can help you with this.
  • Candle staring – This is great if you find it hard focusing. Just light a candle and stare at it. Your attention will be held. If your mind has thoughts, just thank them and go back to staring at the candle.
  • Mantra meditation – Repeating words can help you find calm and focus. Here are 8 powerful mantras for deep inner peace.
  • Guided meditation – There are many resources online that have guided meditations and music to help you relax. Just google “guided meditation” and you’ll find tons of resources.
  • Walking meditation – We cover that one above — a 10 minute walking meditation involving 1 minute of paying attention to each of the feelings of your body while walking, the feeling of your breath, the sensations of air or wind on your skin, what you can hear, and what you can see.
  • Mindfulness meditation – Mindfulness is about recognizing what is happening in the present moment, including what is arising and passing. This includes thoughts, sounds, feelings in the body and anything else present. The idea is to just observe without judgment, and remain open and aware. Here is a step-by-step guide to practice mindfulness in your day-to-day life.

Experiment different techniques and stick to what works best for you.

The guided morning meditation

If you have never meditated before or if you haven’t meditated in a long time, I recommend that you start with 5-10 minutes. With practice, you’ll be able to sit for longer periods of time.

You can set an intention before you begin, but start your practice without attachment to any particular outcome or how your meditation practice “should” be. Just be open to experience what you’re meant to receive from every practice.

The best time to meditate is early in the morning (before your coffee or tea), that way you set yourself up for a peaceful start to your day. Follow these simple steps to start you meditation practice:

  1. Find a place that will be your sacred space for meditation. Try to pick a room that is free from a lot noise or distractions, and make it cozy. You can add relaxing background music, light a candle and/or incense, or diffuse a relaxing essential oil.
  2. Choose a time. Make meditation a priority, set an appointment with yourself and practice at the same time every day and see this as feeding your soul. Some people like to meditate right before they go to bed, this will help you sleep more soundly.
  3. Wear comfortable clothes. For example your PJ’s.
  4. Sit comfortably. You can sit on a cushion on the floor, on your couch or a chair. Try to have backrest so you can keep your back erect. You don’t need to try fancy yogi postures at the beginning. Don’t lay down because most likely, you’ll fall asleep. Just sit still and straight.
  5. Set a timer.
  6. Always start your meditation practice with 5 to 7 long and slow deep breaths so you can start releasing tension.
  7. Then just start focusing your mind on an object. It could be the flame of a candle, your breathing or repeating a mantra like “I am”.
  8. Just know that you’ll have thoughts, you might feel sensations in your body and you might hear sounds in your environment. It’s all normal. Whenever you become conscious of that, just go back to the object you were focusing on, or go back to paying attention to your breathing again, or repeating your mantra, but do it mentally without moving your lips and your tongue.

Even if you feel like you didn’t accomplish much with your practice on a specific day, be consistent. Honor and acknowledge yourself for taking the time to practice. Even if you feel that the effects are not obvious, be grateful for your practice and in no time you’ll be glad you started!

Kentucky Derby 2018: A beginner’s guide to betting the biggest horse race of the year https://briefnews.eu/kentucky-derby-2018-a-beginners-guide-to-betting-the-biggest-horse-race-of-the-year/ https://briefnews.eu/kentucky-derby-2018-a-beginners-guide-to-betting-the-biggest-horse-race-of-the-year/#respond Sat, 05 May 2018 14:34:39 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kentucky-derby-2018-a-beginners-guide-to-betting-the-biggest-horse-race-of-the-year/ Kentucky DerbyGetty/Patrick Smith

This Saturday 20 horses will enter the gate at the 2018 Kentucky Derby, looking to win the first leg of the Triple Crown.

Often called “The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports,” the Kentucky Derby is one of the most compelling events of the year, for both casual viewers and even more so for bettors.

Betting on horse racing can be intimidating — filled with insider language and with so many ways to bet, it’s not surprising that some might be hesitant to head to the betting window. But you shouldn’t be!

Gambling on horses is surprisingly easy, extremely fun, and offers bettors the rare option of winning a lot of money with a minimal bet, should they be lucky enough to have an eye for the right horses on a given day.

Below, we’ll go through everything you need to know so you can head to the betting window with confidence and hopefully make some money on the “Run for the Roses” this Saturday.

Betting to Win, Place, and Show

Rob Carr/Getty Images

The easiest way to bet a horse race is, unsurprisingly, merely picking a horse to win. Like I said, easy! You can do this on a whim wherever you happen to be watching the race as long as you have another person who’s game to put something on the line.

You can bet on a horse to Win at the track and off-track betting parlors, but there are plenty of other ways to bet your favorite horse in the race while still keeping things simple. For instance, you can bet on a horse to Place, which is to come in first or second place, but your return on a winning bet will be a bit lower than on a bet to win. Similarly, you can bet on a horse to Show, meaning it finishes in the top three, with an even lower return.

Finally, you can elect to bet Across the Board on a horse, which is technically three different bets on the horse to win, place, and show. So, betting $ 2 Across the Board on a horse would cost you $ 6 — this is what is known as a “combo straight wager.”

Depending on how much faith you have in your horse and how much return you’re willing on your bet, picking a win, place, or show bet is a simple way to dip your toe in the waters of horse racing.

Exactas, Trifectas, and Superfectas

Dylan Buell/Getty Images

While these bets are harder to hit, they’re where bettors can start to make big money on smaller investments.

An Exacta is a bet on two horses to come in first and second in the race in exact order. If you’re confident in two horses racing, but aren’t as sure on the order they’ll come in, you can place an Exacta Box, which is essentially placing two bets — one exacta with one of your horses finishing first and the other second, and a second bet with their order reversed. Because both of these bets have multiple horses in play, they’ll net you much more, but are also tougher to hit.

Taking this thinking to another level, gamblers can bet a Trifecta, picking three horses to finish first, second, and third (Win, Place, and Show) in order. These can deliver huge payouts to bettors, especially if a longshot that you have on your ticket sneaks into the top three — at the 2017 Kentucky Derby, a $ 2 winning trifecta bet on Always Dreaming, Looking at Lee, and Battle of Midway won bettors a whopping $ 8,207.20.

Since these bets are tough to hit, and worth so much money that you as a gambler would be extremely disappointed to have picked the correct top three horses in the incorrect order, many gamblers choose to bet a Trifecta Box. Like the exacta box, you’re betting three horses as a trifecta in every possible order, technically resulting in six different bets. Thus, a $ 2 box trifecta will cost you $ 12 at the betting window.

And for the truly brave of heart, there is the Superfecta, which follows the same logic as the trifecta, but with the top four horses to finish. These feel all but impossible to hit, but if you have a vision on race-day morning, there’s plenty of profit to be made.

How to place your bet

Jamie Squire/Getty Images

Placing your bet at the betting window is not as complicated as the insider language of horse racing makes it sound. Follow a simple formula, and you’ll be set to go. Lead with the racetrack you are betting and the race number you are betting on — in the case of the Kentucky Derby, you can say that, but when off-track betting parlors are showing numerous races on days other than Kentucky Derby Saturday, you would have to clarify.

Then, state the amount you want to bet, the type of bet you want to make, and the numbers of the horses you’re picking.

Example: “Churchill Downs, Race 12. $ 1 trifecta box — 6-7-14.”

You would then hand the person behind the counter $ 6 for your bet — remember, a trifecta box is actually six bets — and take your ticket once it was printed out.

Also, always remember to tip your ticket-taker — in the world of picking ponies you can use all of the good karma you can get.

The Ultimate Exercise Routine (for Beginners, Intermediate, Advanced Level) https://briefnews.eu/the-ultimate-exercise-routine-for-beginners-intermediate-advanced-level/ https://briefnews.eu/the-ultimate-exercise-routine-for-beginners-intermediate-advanced-level/#respond Thu, 08 Mar 2018 04:23:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-ultimate-exercise-routine-for-beginners-intermediate-advanced-level/

Do you find it difficult sticking with an exercise routine? Do you love the idea of creating a routine, yet still lack the motivation to apply your creation? If so, you are not alone. If you have not heard of my 24 Hour Workout, let me introduce you to the ultimate exercise routine hack.

Let’s examine the routine by splitting it into three levels as my routine can seem a little intimidating at times.

Why you need an exercise routine

The ultimate exercise routine identified here is different than most routines in that it requires no gym membership and can be done anywhere at any time. The benefits of exercise (and maintaining an exercise routine) will lead to an overall healthy life.

Simply adopting this exercise routine will completely change your life. Let’s examine 11 Benefits of Exercise provided by Dr. Axe:[1]

  1. Boost happiness levels
  2. Learn to set and achieve goals
  3. Reduce risk of heart disease
  4. Improved sleep
  5. Boost in overall energy
  6. Increased strength and flexibility
  7. Improved memory
  8. Increased self-confidence
  9. Perform better at work
  10. Less susceptible to disease
  11. You will live longer

An exercise routine (combined with a morning routine) is the ultimate lifehack. Not only will it provide you a way to think, look, and feel great, but it will also boost your productivity, increase your energy level and intelligence, improve your memory, and increase your overall quality of life.

Equally important, you can begin an exercise routine at any stage in your life.

The 3 levels of exercise routine

Let’s examine three different levels using the American Council on Exercise (ACE) Health-Fitness-Performance (HFP) Continuum as a guide.

Beginner Level

It is easy to imagine starting an exercise routine, yet it is very difficult to begin doing the actual work. That’s why it is actually the hardest level.

The following is a beginner’s exercise routine:

1. Exercise hourly or High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)

When: Monday, Wednesday, Friday

  • Where: Anywhere and Everywhere
  • How long: 2 months

Option A – Exercise hourly (if possible)

Using a version of the Pomodoro Technique, use a timer and set it for every 60 minutes. Once the timer goes off, do the following:

Power Push-up. Start with 10 push-ups and do these five times a day. Watch the following video:

Plank. Hold the plank for at least 30 seconds (five times a day). Watch the following video:

Option B – High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workouts for beginners at Home (morning or evening)

Before beginning the following workout, make sure you warm up for 3 minutes (jumping jacks, quick jog, etc.). After you have completed the workout, rest for at least 1 minute and stretch.

The HIIT Workout for Beginners at Home by Anytimestrength.com outlines the perfect alternative to my 24 Workout.[2] Follow Circuits 1-4 in the image below:

2. Cardio workout exercises of your interest (works with Option A or B)

  • When: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday
  • Where: Anywhere and Everywhere
  • How long: 2 months

Do some form of cardio (i.e. jogging, elliptical, stair climber, jumping rope, swimming, cycling, etc.) for at least 20 minutes.

Before you do any cardio exercises, do this 5-minute warmup routine to prevent injuries:

Exercise hacks for the beginner level

  • Stand while you work. This simple change will improve posture, reduce lower back pain, and prevent neck strain.
  • Drink more water as it will increase your energy, relieve fatigue, promote weight loss, and flush out toxins.
  • Take a cold shower to wake up.

Intermediate Level

After 2 months you will want to step it up. At this point you should start seeing some of the benefits of your new exercise routine. The following is an intermediate guide:

1. Exercise hourly or 10-minute home fat burning workout

  • When: Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday
  • Where: Anywhere and Everywhere
  • How long: 4 months

Option A – Exercise hourly (if possible)

Using a version of the Pomodoro Technique, use a timer and set it for every 60 minutes. Once the timer goes off, do the following:

Power Push-up. Do 20 push-ups (five times a day).

Plank. Hold the plank for at least 50 seconds (five times a day).

Option B – 10 minute home fat burning workout (morning or evening)

Before beginning the following workout, make sure you warm up for 3 minutes (jumping jacks, quick jog, etc.). After you have completed the workout, rest for at least 1 minute and stretch.

ATHLEAN-X provides a fantastic (and killer) workout you can perform in the morning or evening if you are not able to exercise hourly.[3]

Watch and follow along with the following video:

2. Cardio workout exercises of your interest (works with Option A or B)

  • When: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday
  • Where: Anywhere and Everywhere
  • How long: 4 months

Do some form of cardio (i.e. jogging, elliptical, stair climber, jumping rope, swimming, cycling, etc.) for (at a minimum) 30 minutes.

Don’t forget to do this warmup routine to prevent injuries:

Exercise hacks for the intermediate level

  • Stand while you work. This simple change will improve posture, reduce lower back pain, and prevent neck strain.
  • Drink more water as it will increase your energy, relieve fatigue, promote weight loss, and flush out toxins.
  • Take a cold shower to wake up.

Advanced Level

After 6 months you should start to think, look, and feel really good. It’s now time to enter into beast mode! The following is an advanced guide:

1. Exercise hourly, or Bodyweight only HIIT workout

  • When: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Sunday
  • Where: Anywhere and Everywhere (try it in an airport!)
  • How long: the rest of your life!

Option A – Exercise hourly (if possible)

Using a version of the Pomodoro Technique, use a timer and set it for every 45-60 minutes. Once the timer goes off, do the following:

Power Push-up. Do them until they hurt (ten times a day).

Plank. Hold the plank until it hurts (ten times a day).

Bicep curls with a resistance band (as many as you can ten times a day – can be done anywhere and everywhere). Learn how to do it with this video:

Pull-ups (as many as you can 5 times a day). Watch this video to do it right:

Option B – Insane HIIT Challenge – Bodyweight Only HIIT Workout (morning or evening)

Before beginning the following workout, make sure you warm up for 3 minutes (jumping jacks, quick jog, etc.). After you have completed the workout, rest for at least 1 minute and stretch.

FitnessBlender.com provides an insane HIIT workout and I recommend it as an alternative to my 24 Hour Workout if you are unable to exercise hourly. [4] Watch and follow along with the following video:

2. Cardio workout exercises of your interest (works with Option A or B)

  • When: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday
  • Where: Anywhere and Everywhere
  • How long: the rest of your life!

Do some form of cardio (i.e. jogging, elliptical, stair climber, jumping rope, swimming, cycling, etc.) for (at a minimum) 30 minutes. Bump it up to 60 minutes or more when training for an event (i.e. a marathon).

Always remember, warming up your body before any exercises is important:

Exercise hacks for the advanced level

  • Stand while you work. This simple change will improve posture, reduce lower back pain, and prevent neck strain.
  • Take a Vitamin B-12 to increase energy and improve cardiovascular support.
  • Take a Nootropic. Known as “Smart Drugs” will boost your memory, increase focus, and can provide mood enhancing benefits.[5]
  • Drink more water as it will increase your energy, relieve fatigue, promote weight loss, and flush out toxins.
  • Take a cold shower to wake up.
  • Listen to audiobooks while you exercise.
  • Read a book while you plank.
  • Sign up for an event (i.e. a marathon).

Adopting an exercise routine is a life-changing experience. I guarantee, if you adopt the exercise routine discussed here, you will see significant improvements in your life. You will find that your “happy” chemicals in your body will receive a boost, your stress levels will reduce, your ability to cope with stress will get better, your self-confidence will increase, and your mental capacity will improve.

Essentially, you will think – look – and feel better than ever!

After putting in more than 60 hours of research, we enlisted a former barista, aided by Stumptown Coffee’s education crew, to test five espresso machines, four grinders, and a dozen accessories to find the best beginner’s espresso setup for less than $ 1,000. We recommend starting with the Breville Infuser espresso machine, because it makes pulling consistently great-tasting espresso shots easier and more approachable than the other machines we tested. It also comes with all of the accessories you need to get started.

Who this is for

This guide is for someone who likes good coffee and wants to take the time to learn more about the craft. Whether you’ve been making pour-over for years or simply enjoy going to your local coffee shop and learning different espresso tasting notes, our picks will give you a relatively affordable start in the world of espresso making.

How we picked and tested

i

To figure out just what was needed to make a cost-effective home espresso setup, we started by consulting eight coffee experts, ranging from baristas to roasters to industry entrepreneurs, and reading hundreds of articles, blog posts, and forums.

According to the experts, a semiautomatic, single-boiler machine is the way to go. The best espresso is made by forcing 195 ºF water through finely ground beans with about 10 bars of pressure. A semiautomatic machine heats the water precisely and uses a pump to create the right amount of pressure every time.

Single-boiler espresso machines use only one boiler for both the water for the espresso shot and the steam wand. This means they require some down time between pulling a shot and steaming milk, but they’re significantly less expensive than their double-boiler cousins.

We tested four machines from the perspective of someone unboxing and trying to get familiar for the first time. Each machine had at least an hour to wow us with its setup process, documentation, and ability to create consistently good espresso without too much tinkering. We scrutinized each machine’s portafilter, and used the steam wand to make a cappuccino. We also tested grinders, which are just as important to making good espresso as the machine itself, along with a range of accessories. To learn more about our testing process, please see our full guide to espresso gear.

Espresso machine

The Breville Infuser looks great on any kitchen counter. Photo: Michael Hession

The Breville Infuser was the best out of all the machines because of its superior performance for both espresso and milk steaming, ease of use, and the fact that it comes with all the accessories needed to get started. It made a consistently flavorful shot of espresso, and it was very easy to set up and use. The experts we consulted were even impressed with how easy it was to pull a decent shot with the Breville—high praise from a group of people experienced with $ 1,000+ machines!

Using the Infuser is a breeze, even if you’ve never touched an espresso machine before. It comes with a straightforward “how to get started making espresso” sheet, a removable water reservoir, preset options for single and double shots, and a manual mode for precision control. Although it didn’t make the absolute tastiest shot of espresso we tried, our testers were impressed with its consistency and pleasant mouthfeel. Every shot we pulled had a good amount of crema on top, as you’d expect from a high-end cafe. And the Breville’s steam wand was by far the best tested, though it does take a bit of time to heat up fully.

Espresso grinder

The Rocky lives up to its reputation as one of the most capable home-use grinders available. Photo: Michael Hession

Buying a good grinder is just as important as buying a good espresso machine. If the coffee beans aren’t ground to consistent and uniformly sized particles, it doesn’t matter how good the machine is — the coffee will taste bad. Finding a machine that can accurately produce fine espresso grinds is difficult, and even the picks in our drip coffee grinders guide aren’t nuanced enough for a proper grind. You need a rig with burrs that are specially made to pulverize the coffee to a very fine grind of the exact right size, like the Rancilio Rocky, though acquiring such a grinder comes with a steep price tag.

In our tests, the Rocky was great at grinding beans consistently and was easy to adjust. To change the size of your grind from espresso to French press and back again, you simply move a knob on the hopper from left to right. We also liked that the grinder was relatively quiet compared with many of the others we tested.

Accessories

Knock box

A knock box is basically a small countertop trash can with a bar going across the top for you to hit your portafilter against to eject used grounds. We tested several competing designs and thought the Cafelat was the best. It has a sleek design with a removable bar for easy cleaning, and very few seams for gunk to collect in.

Cups

The real joy of espresso is in the drinking. Personally, I enjoy drinking espresso out of glass because it looks nice and feels modern. The Duralex Picardie—our top pick for drinking glasses—comes in a 3.1-ounce glass that’s perfect for espresso sipping, macchiatos, and cortados.

Tamper

When it comes to tamping your espresso, consistency is key. Thus, it’s helpful to own a tamper that you like. We found Rattleware’s tampers felt good in the hand and had a nice weight, though they’re a bit on the expensive side.

Frothing pitcher for lattes

If you want to make milk drinks, you’re going to need a frothing pitcher. Many look alike, but some are nicer than others. We prefer Rattleware’s pitchers, which are a bit sturdier and have a better finish than other models, but it really comes down to your personal preferences.
