AUSTRALIA stuck with an unchanged eleven and started like a house on fire in the first session of the day.
But Pakistan refused to lie down and a big partnership resurrected their innings and set up a tantalising remainder to the second Test.

Australia 1/20 (Siddle 4, Finch 13)

Aussies erupt before Pakistan revival
Australia got the ideal start to the second Test in the opening session, but then Pakistan dug in and finished the day on top.
After a staggering five-wickets fell before lunch, the middle session well and truly belonged to Pakistan before the final session went right down to the wire.
Nathan Lyon was the sole destroyer in the morning as he claimed a remarkable four wickets in the space of six deliveries.
The off-spinner climbed the rankings and is now the fourth most prolific wicket-taker in Test cricket for Australia with 314.
Lyon claimed his first two wickets with the last ball of one over before missing out on his hat-trick, only to claim a wicket with the very next ball.
That’s dead set out. Brilliant spell from Lyon #PAKvAUS
The Aussies went into the sheds with their tails wagging as Pakistan limped to 5/77. It marked the first time in Pakistan Test history they’d lost four top order wickets without making a run as they fell from 1/57 to 5/57.
After the lunch break the momentum completely turned.
Test debutant Fakhar Zaman and skipped Sarfraz Ahmed fought off the rampant Aussie attack and left them clueless as they ticked the scoreboard over.
Their stand was brought to an end right before the stroke of the Tea break when Marnus Labuschagne trapped Zaman in front of the stumps; his innings coming to an end agonisingly shy of his maiden Test century on 94.
Pakistanis dismissed in the nervous 90s on Test Debut
99 Asim Kamal v SA, 2003 95 Abdul Kadir v AUS, 1964 94 FAKHAR ZAMAN v AUS, today 90 Taslim Arif v IND, 1980#PAKvAUS
Remarkably Ahmed then fell in the final session also on 94, making it only the fourth time in Test history two teammates have been removed on an identical score in the 90s in an innings.
Pakistan entered the final session with only four wickets in hand and the innings was finally brought to an end when Mitchell Starc steamrolled Mohammad Abbas with the new ball.
Australia were sent in and only had to survive seven overs, but it all went pear-shaped in the fourth over when Khawaja was sent on his way after a faint glance down leg side was collected by Ahmed.
Then on the final ball of the day, it got worse for the Aussies when nightwatchman Peter Siddle was smashed on the front pad.
Originally given not out Pakistan opted to review the decision which showed the ball clattering into leg stump.
Khawaja, indestructible in Dubai, gets out to a fine leg glance and a super Sarfraz catch in Abu Dhabi. As Khawaja would say, that’s cricket #PakvAus
Marnus Labuschagne was the other story of the day for the Aussies after claiming three wickets with the ball and reeling in an extraordinary catch.
Of course it wasn’t all sunshine and roses as the debutant dropped a simple catch which would have sent Zaman back to the rooms when he was on 30.
It was a valiant fightback from Pakistan on the day after being 5/57 and then made even better when they claimed two late wickets.
The Aussies on the other hand will be hoping to pile on the runs and bat throughout the entirety of the day as they look to surpass the Pakistan total and take their first lead of the series.
Pronouncing certain names can be tough, but when a Test debutant has the name Fakhar … there’s bound to be one person come undone.
Unfortunately the mishap happened on the first day at the first main break in play with Mark Waugh falling victim.
As he tried to describe the backfoot shots he was playing the slip-up occurred and it left fellow panellists Brett Lee and Neroli Meadows in fits of laughter.
Two wickets with the last two balls of his over and Nathan Lyon strolled in for the hat-trick ball. Unfortunately Asad Shafiq defended the ball away brilliantly.
But then very next ball he was sent packing and despite being given not out, a review confirmed the good news for Australia.
The disaster only got worse for Pakistan a matter of moments later when Babar Azam tried lifting Lyon up and out of the stadium.
As he advanced down the wicket the ball went straight through the gap and collected his middle stump.
Lyon claiming four wickets in six balls has the Pakistan team in complete disarray.
The stunning display has seen Lyon climb all the way up into fourth place on the list of Test wickets for Australia with 314.
You can watch the masterclass in the video player above.
Nicely pitched off-break from Lyon but Shafiq keeps it out, then next ball a huge bat/pad shout. Aust use their last review… and it is a bat pad! 3 in 4 for Lyon! #PakvAus
Australia struggled taking wickets in the first Test, but things have started in much better fashion in Abu Dhabi with Mitchell Starc claiming the first wicket in the third over.
Mohammad Hafeez knocked the ball in the direction of the man at short leg, Marnus Labuschagne, who took an extraordinary catch.
The ball slammed into his right leg and he quickly closed up before juggling the ball off of his knee and keeping it from hitting the turf.
Perfect start for the Aussies after being sent in to bowl first yet again.
That is one of the most extraordinary short leg catches you will ever see. Marnus Labuschagne!
AUSTRALIAN coach Justin Langer has revealed a silent sledge from former South Australian spinner Dan Cullen remains his most infuriating sledge on a cricket field.
In an interview with Channel 7 Cricket, Langer says Cullen only needed to flash him a look to leave him seething during a heated Sheffield Shield match between the Redbacks and Western Australia.
Langer said he and Cullen had been chirping away at each other for some time during their first meeting in Cullen’s debut Shield season in 2004.
“The worst sledge I got was from a young red-headed South Australian called Dan Cullen and he was sort of winding me up and I was smacking him around,” Langer said.
“I was a senior player by then. Then we got into a bit of verbal and when he got me out he just went (winking). He just winked at me. I just went ahh, it nearly killed me.

The half brother of Meghan Markle, 36, has written a second open letter to his sister days before the royal wedding.
Thomas Markle Jr, 51, addressed the open letter, published in In Touch magazine, to Prince Harry’s bride to be whom he referred to as “Meg”.
Thomas, whom it is believed is not invited to the royal wedding, asks for an invite in the two page long letter, which can be seen in full here.
The letter reads: “It’s true that you and I have become ‘distant’ along with the rest of our family members over the years.
But we are all still family. With all the memories of watching you grow up, it’s hurtful that you would forget about us.”
It later goes on to list the special occasions they spent together, including Christmas and Thanksgiving celebrations.
He also spoke about the “countless weekends” that he, their shared father, Thomas Markle Sr, and their grandma spent together.
He finished: “It does hurt my feelings not getting invited to your wedding, along with the rest of the family.
But it’s not too late to send me an invite along with your entire family.
We should all be there to show our love and support on your wedding day, because that’s what families do.”
While a Kensington Palace statement last week confirmed Meghan’s parents will be attending, there was no mention of any other family members who are invited from America.
It would appear Meghan has decided to exclude most of her family from the wedding – despite advice to the contrary from royal officials, according to an insider.
“I understand she doesn’t get on with a lot of her extended family,” the insider told Express.co.uk exclusively.
“That’s why she didn’t want to invite them to the wedding,” the source added.
It is believed the Lord Chamberlain, Lord Peel, who is the most senior officer in the royal household, advised Meghan against this.
“He said: ‘You’ve made more enemies because if you don’t invite them they may come out with stories’,” revealed the source.
However, Meghan is believed to have ignored this advice. “She said she would rather have that than have people there she’s not close to.”

25 Republican senators sent a letter to President Donald Trump asking him to get the US back into the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement.
Trump pulled the US out of TPP on the third day of his presidency, but recently said he is open to renegotiating the deal.
But recent moves by the Trump administration suggest that the president is favoring more protectionist trade policies.
More than two-dozen Republican senators on Tuesday released a letter they sent to President Donald Trump, requesting the president reengage on talks to join one of the world’s largest trade agreements.

Sue Moretta told how her mother Margaret Smith passed away from dementia four years ago at the age of 83.
But following the loss, Sue later found a letter Margaret had written to BGT supremo Cowell but had never posted, asking him to hear her daughter sing.
Sue, 58, had begged her mother not to send the letter at the time but when she discovered it again when clearing out her mother’s things, she decided it was the right time to audition for the show and sing in front of Cowell, satisfying her mother’s wish.
And during a storming performance featured on tonight’s show, she gets the entire audience on their feet – and the judges on their desk, with David Walliams even dropping his trousers.
“I had decided to pack in singing after 40 years when I was still trying to get my break, but then I found the letter and decided to have a go. And now I have achieved my goal of singing in front of Simon Cowell and my Mum would be turning cartwheels if she could have seen it,” she said.
Viewers will see Sue, from Lancashire, go on stage as the final auditionee of the BGT Judge Tour in Manchester, before wowing everyone in the auditorium as she performs Don’t Rain On My Parade.
So good was the performance that all of the judges and the audience were soon up dancing.
But Sue was forced to maintain her composure when judges Walliams, Amanda Holden and Alesha Dixon all climbed onto the judges’ desk to dance – with David even pulling down his trousers down for a gag, much to the audience’s delight.
“Simon didn’t know where to look when David pulled down his trousers. I was trying to finish my song and concentrate but I think Simon had his hand over his eyes,” she added.
“I didn’t look, I just tried to get on with the job at hand. The reason I gave it one more shot was purely for my Mum. Dementia is such a huge thing for so many people. And this was my last chance.”
The judges commended her on carrying on performing through the increasingly raucous unfolding scenes, but viewers will have to wait until tonight’s show to see if she gets through to the next round.
Sue has been singing for 40 years in bands and duos on the club circuit of the North West. She now teaches singing and performs locals concerts, 60s gigs and at funerals.
She said when late mother Margaret had been able to remember very little, she was still able to join in with Sue singing Dame Vera Lynn’s We’ll Meet Again.
After seeing how music can help those suffering with dementia, Sue has since spent time singing in nursing homes for patients suffering with the disease.

https://briefnews.eu/begging-for-water-secret-cell-behind-bookshelf-exposed-at-philippines-police-station-photos/#respondFri, 28 Apr 2017 10:43:22 +0000http://briefnews.eu/begging-for-water-secret-cell-behind-bookshelf-exposed-at-philippines-police-station-photos/
A cell with detainees hidden behind a bookshelf has been exposed in a police station in the Philippines, rights activists and media said, adding that people were reportedly begging for water and said they had been forced to urinate in plastic bags while held without any charges.
The cell containing 12 men and a women was initially exposed by the Philippines’ official Commission on Human Rights (CHR) during its unannounced visit to Police Station 1 in the Tondo district in the capital, Manila, local news website Rappler reported, citing the CHR.
When they were discovered by CHR activists and journalists, the detainees cried “here we are, here we are,” AFP reported, adding that some of them begged for water and pleaded with rights workers not to abandon them.
When the CHR attempted to free the detainees, the police reportedly objected, saying: “We arrested them. You can’t take them.” Station Commander Superintendent Robert Domingo said the detainees were jailed on drug offenses and their documents were still being processed.
Domingo claimed that the people had been arrested on April 26, although the detainees who spoke to the CHR said they had spent much longer in the hidden cell.
“The allegations of these arrested…it’s their word against ours. So we will fight that in the end,” Domingo said, as cited by Rappler.
One of the detainees, identified as 44-year-old Grace de Guzman, said she and her husband had been detained for week. According to the woman, they were arrested for no reason. Another detainee showed bruises, claiming that he had been beaten with a wooden object.
Some detainees said that police were demanding money for their release. The amounts ranged between P30,000 ($ 600) and P100,000 ($ 2,000).
“Lock-up cell does not go in line with the international standard [of jails]. Detainees claim the lock-up cell does not have any source of light and ventilation. The two urinals inside do not function, forcing many of them to urinate and [do] bowel movement in plastic bags,” said the CHR director of NCR (National Capital Region), Gilbert Boisner.
Boisner later told AFP that the detainees “were picked up on the pretext of drugs but they [authorities] had not filed any charges against them.”
The authorities suspended Domingo from his post on Friday, pending an investigation, according to national police spokesman Senior Superintendent Dionardo Carlos.
“He [Domingo] will undergo an administrative case. If evidence warrants, a criminal case will also be filed against him and the persons involved,” Carlos told AFP.
The hidden cell was criticized by Human Rights Watch, which called the jail “an unlawful secret detention facility.”
“The discovery of the secret jail is just the latest sign of how police are exploiting [President Rodrigo] Duterte’s abusive anti-drug campaign for personal gain,” Phelim Kine, deputy director for the Asia Division of HRW, said.
The incident comes amid the ‘war on drugs’ waged since Duterte came to power in June 2016. He was elected partially on a promise to extend countrywide the brutal tactics he had used against drug crime while serving as mayor of Davao for 22 years.
The controversial Philippines leader was voted the most influential person of 2017 by readers of Time magazine in an online poll.
