Enlarge / A foraging bee. (credit: Nunzio_Zotti / Flickr)
We need bees to pollinate the plants that feed us. And bees need us to stop inadvertently poisoning them with the insecticides we use to keep those plants healthy. Unfortunately, just as we start to make progress on reducing the worldwide use of neonicotinoids (a class of insecticides that are toxic to bees), it seems like we might be at risk of rolling out an alternative insecticide that causes similar problems.
“Sulfoximine-based insecticides are the most likely successor [to neonicotinoids]” write the University of London’s Harry Siviter and his colleagues in a paper published in Nature this week. And that’s not great, as they found that bumblebee colonies exposed to a sulfoximine-based insecticide called sulfoxaflor suffered severe effects compared to a control colony. The insecticide didn’t kill the bees, but it damaged their ability to run a successful colony—a similar effect to neonicotinoids.
When insecticides are sprayed on crops, they settle not just on the crops themselves but also nearby wildflowers. Crops grown from insecticide-treated seeds also result in contaminated dust, soil, and pollen. This all exposes foraging bumblebees to the insecticide and also means that contaminated pollen and nectar make their way back to the bee colony, where larvae are exposed.
]]>Made with “watercolors and love” and hatched as part of Failbetter Games’ incubation program, Selling Sunlight is a narrative RPG where “everything will be okay eventually”. That’s one hell of a sales pitch. Instead of the usual RPG trappings, you’re not traveling the world to kill monsters and level up, but to make friends, trade, or just explore. Apparently there will be giant fluffy bees, too!
“You are trusted. You are hated. You are a mysterious, charming mess of a merchant. You mostly confuse people a lot.”
All of this looks utterly charming and unique. If you want to see Selling Sunlight become reality, consider backing the game’s Kickstarter campaign or trying the demo. You can also follow developers Cose Belle on Facebook and Twitter.

With less than 24 hours left till Germans head to the polls, active campaigning has ended but the battle for votes continues – you need only take a look at the various campaign posters, ranging from somewhat witty to plain awkward, that still plaster Berlin’s streets.
While the mainstream parties, such as Chancellor Angela Merkel’s CDU (Christian Democratic Union) and its main rival, SPD (Social Democratic Party) tend to be less than bold in their street advertising strategies, the same cannot be said of upstarts like Alternative for Germany (AfD) and underdogs like the German Pirate Party, that took a decidedly more creative approach.
While some might find this particular poster not-exactly-politically-correct, it definitely catches the eye.
“Burqas? We like bikinis.”
With the below poster which reads “Mum doesn’t have to know everything! We fight against the surveillance state and for your privacy,” the Pirate Party may be sure it will appeal to the younger audiences.
And a poster for Anja Hirschel, the Pirate Party’s candidate and a big fan of honey-bees, has a deep personal touch.
“Most of all I like to protect data, fundamental rights and bees,” it says.
We may not hear about them much in German mainstream media, but there are adherents of communism, too. While most of the parties preferred to place their candidates on the campaign posters, the Marxist–Leninist Party of Germany’s features Vladimir Lenin.
Satirical Die Partei (The Party), which is actually an abbreviation for “Work, Rule of Law, Animal Protection, Elite Promotion, and grass-roots democratic Initiative,” put the word “Kançler” on their poster with party member, comedian and author Serdar Somuncu making a very grumpy face, a jab at Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Meanwhile, Thomas Heilmann, a candidate from Merkel’s CDU enlisted the help of Barack Obama, as though the help of Merkel were not enough, to promote his campaign.
“If I could, I would vote for Merkel,” it says.
Some of the placards that took over the streets early August have not stood the test of time though.

GUEST:
America’s agricultural sector faces an unprecedented crisis. Native honeybees, one of the most prolific pollinators in the animal kingdom, are dying off at an unprecedented rate from Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) and threatening an ecosystem service worth about $ 15 billion.
Supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), the RoboBees project looks to minimize the loss of this critical resource with new microbots that can mimic the pollinating role of a honeybee. But the project has a number of challenges to overcome before these robots can take to the skies.
The RoboBee is a microrobot inspired by the biology of a honey bee. In a remarkable display of biomimicry, scientists have developed a flight-capable robot that’s just half the size of a paperclip and weighs in at one tenth of a gram.
“This is a proof of concept — there’s nothing compared to this. It’s a totally first-time demonstration,” said lead author Eijiro Miyako, a chemist at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science in Tsukuba, Japan, in an article published in Scientific American.
The RoboBees project pushes the boundaries of research in a variety of fields, from micromanufacturing to energy storage and even the computer algorithms that control the robots by the swarm.
Controlled flight
In 2012, scientists at Harvard showcased the first controllable flight of an insect-scale robot, heralding the first major breakthrough and proof of concept for these prototype bots. The RoboBee achieves flight using piezoelectric actuators, small strips of ceramic material that expand and contract when an electric current is supplied, mimicking muscle tissue. The wings operate independently, allowing for controlled flight — a miraculous achievement for a robot that weighs less than an actual honeybee.
Breakthroughs in manufacturing
The RoboBee owes its weight and size achievements to new microscale manufacturing methods that make use of a technology called “pop-up microelectromechanical (MEM) technologies.” Pop-up MEMs allow unprecedented scale for the RoboBees and open doors for further development.
Recent developments
Harvard’s latest generation of RoboBees is making waves — literally. The biggest breakthrough for the next generations of RoboBee was announced in 2015, when new algorithms were developed that allowed the tiny robot to swim underwater. The algorithms allow scientists to control the RoboBees’ wings in new ways and guide the tiny robots through water. Here, scientists borrowed from nature yet again after observing the way puffins used their wings to sail through the water during a dive.
Scientists are also looking to overcome challenges of energy usage, the biggest remaining barrier to the RoboBees’ development. In an article published in Science in May 2016, scientists described a new method of energy conservation enabled by stronger, more efficient wing systems that allow the RoboBee to carry just a bit more weight.
These scientists, from Harvard and other top universities, looked to the perching behavior of most birds and insects to give the RoboBees their next upgrade: small foam caps. The caps sit on the top of the tiny robots’ structure and provide a platform for electrostatic adhesion, allowing the RoboBees to perch on nearly any surface to save energy. The foam caps add a few more grams of weight, but they allow the RoboBee to “rest” during a flight, dramatically increasing its potential run time.
“A lot of different animals use perching to conserve energy, but the methods they use to perch, like sticky adhesives or latching with talons, are inappropriate for a paper clip-size microrobot,” said Kevin Ma, who’s doing his postdoc work at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Wyss Institute and who coauthored the paper.
Biomimicry again provided the inspiration for the robots’ ingenious, low-power perching ability, which Harvard demonstrated on the surface of a leaf. When perching, the RoboBee uses 1/1,000th of the power used when hovering.
While honeybee populations have increased very recently, diseases, pesticides, and CCD still have scientists working harder than ever to move the RoboBee from concept to reality. The ability to operate under their own power and communicate as a hive remain two significant obstacles for the tiny robots.
Onboard battery systems
Until now, the RoboBees have been operating with a microthin wire that transmits power to the bee’s muscles. Transitioning to an onboard battery requires a greater weight capacity and smaller power sources. Both are currently under development, and Ma is hopeful that a breakthrough is around the corner.
“Once the robot can stay aloft on its own, we would be working on things like allowing it to perform tasks, increasing its battery life, and making it fly faster,” Ma told VentureBeat.
Wireless communications
In a beehive, honeybees use sophisticated “dances” to indicate the direction and distance of a potential source of nectar. Coupled with pheromone releases and the scent of the flowers themselves, bees are able to hyperfocus on single flower species, harvesting nectar while pollinating every flower they intercept.
Over the last few years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has connected more and more devices, allowing them to interact without continual human input. And while it’s hard to tell whether the IoT will help the RoboBees work together in the next few years, a similar hive-mind capability is crucial to their development and represents the next big task for Harvard’s team.
While the effect of a single robot might be miniscule, a coordinated group of hundreds, thousands, or millions of RoboBees could perform a host of unprecedented tasks. Aside from pollinating plants for agricultural purposes, the RoboBees could coordinate to digitally map terrain, monitor weather conditions, and even assist in relief efforts after a disaster, through data collection. While RoboBees are only intended as a stopgap measure for honeybee loss, the potential applications of the technology have the world holding its breath for the next breakthrough.

]]>In a recent Atlantic article, Olga Khazan examined the finding that the longer a woman has been in the workforce, the less likely she is to want her boss to be a woman. One possible explanation Khazan discusses—and this isn’t settled—is that women fear their female superiors will cut them down in the workplace; this happens because, the thinking goes, female higher-ups are eager to distance themselves from other women in male-dominated workplaces, where their gender might seem like an impediment to career advancement. The existence of these “queen bees,” the research cited in Khazan’s article suggests, seems to be driven by a lack of female representation in the workplace.
In trying to better understand these dynamics, it’s important to note that the academic literature on queen bees focuses, almost exclusively, on white women. Which leaves the question: Does this same set of theories apply to black women and other women of color, especially considering that they are even more likely to be underrepresented at work?
One reason it’s hard to assign the queen-bee label to women of color is that they make up such a small proportion of female executives (let alone executives of any gender). While research on black female leadership is scant, the existing literature is clear on at least one thing: Black women ascend to the upper echelons of corporations less frequently than their white counterparts. Whereas white women hold 4.4 percent of CEO positions, black women hold a mere 0.2 percent.
But numerical underrepresentation isn’t the only reason the label of queen bee doesn’t quite seem to fit black women; the biases that women of color face are different from the ones white women face—and, based on Khazan’s article, it’s the latter that appear to have a role in a lot of queen-bee behavior. In my work as a social psychologist researching the science of diversity, I’ve found that when people think about black executives, they tend to visualize black men. When they think about female executives, they tend to visualize white women. That leaves black women in a sort of corporate limbo. One upshot of this is that black women usually have more leeway to be assertive and direct, because people do not associate them as strongly with the “more feminine” traits that come up in the theoretical framework Khazan discusses. This discrepancy may mean that a black woman’s blunt comment may be received as more palatable than the same comment coming from a white woman. (At the same time, less helpfully, black women are not as likely to be thought of as cooperative problem solvers, compared to white women.)
In some small way, these perceptions can work to black women’s advantage. A recent study conducted by the management professors Robert Livingston, Ashley Rosette, and Ella Washington showed that black women who exhibit dominant, assertive behavior are conferred higher leadership status than white women and black men who behave similarly.
But black women are still disadvantaged by these biases in the long run. Those of them in leadership positions are likely quite familiar with the stereotype of the “angry black woman.” They are also likely aware that having such a stereotype assigned to them, particularly in a mostly white, male-dominated setting, could be disastrous for their careers. That can lead black women who have made their way to the top of a company to focus on softening criticism and de-escalating conflict. According to a 2015 report from the diversity-minded nonprofit Center for Talent Innovation, black women are more likely than white women to say that downplaying anger and conflict is critical to their professional advancement. It’s taxing work monitoring and dodging several layers of stereotypes, not to mention while doing one’s job—perhaps this balancing act explains to an extent why, in the report, 44 percent of black women reported feeling stalled in their careers, compared to 30 percent of white women.
There’s another reason black women in leadership positions might defy the queen-bee stereotype. According to the same 2015 report, 42 percent of black women, versus 7 percent of white women, said that they hoped to put some of their power as leaders toward the good of their communities. Perhaps after encountering obstacles as they made their way to the top of the corporate hierarchy, higher-up women of color are more likely to focus on helping younger women rather than squeezing them out. But whatever the reason, the label of queen bee seems much less applicable to this big-tent approach to leadership.
These analyses are just initial attempts at trying to understand how a phenomenon talked about with respect to mostly white women does or doesn’t apply to other women. The truth is, with so few female leaders of color to study, the picture remains woefully incomplete.

There’s widespread agreement that bees around the world are in trouble. A few years back, domestic honey bee nests started experiencing mass die offs, and problems were found in wild bees as well. What’s hasn’t been clear is what the cause might be. Viruses, fungi, and pesticides have all been floated as possible causes, but definitive evidence has been hard to come by; a number of scientists have suggested that there might be multiple contributing factors.
Nevertheless, suspicions focused on a specific class of insecticides called neonicotinoids. The EU has already placed restrictions on their use, and it’s considering a near-total ban.
If you read the headlines this week, it would appear that a new study completely justifies that decision. Funded in part by two insecticide manufacturers, a team of independent researchers purportedly tied neonicotinoids to bee colony health. But a quick look at the underlying data shows that the situation is far more complex. And a second paper, with more robust results, supports the idea that these insecticides are merely one of a number of factors contributing to bees’ problems.
