Federer is a heavy favourite to end this fortnight in Melbourne as champion once again, following on from his 2017 triumph when he beat Rafael Nadal in an epic five-set final. Last year, the Swiss was not perfect in his first round. He faced Austria’s Jurgen Melzer, who had been forced to qualify for the tournament, but lost the second set in an unexpected wobble. But that match came after six months out and he was understandably rusty. This time around, Federer looked imperious at the Hopman Cup, his first competition of the year. It means winning will be a tall order for Bedene, who is the world No 51 and has never played Federer before. Express Sport brings you all the action from Melbourne. (* denotes next to serve) *Federer 6-3, 5-4 Bedene Not a good time for a double, serving at 3-5 and 15-15. Federer then hits a stellar crosscourt forehand as Bedene hesitates at the baseline to bring up to set points. But a rare Swiss mis-hit sees the first go and Bedene comes forward to finish off the second after serving out wide. He has to save another with a first serve after Federer attacks a second at deuce but when the No 2 seed’s drop shot isn’t quite cute enough, Bedene gets a game point which he converts. Federer to serve for a two-set lead. Federer 6-3, 5-3 Bedene* Another ruthless service hold from the world No 2. Bedene will again serve to stay in the set. *Federer 6-3, 4-3 Bedene It’s nice to see Federer at least being pushed a little here. Bedene is striking well, which might not win him the match but it will prolong it. Holds to 15 but remains a break down. Federer 6-3, 4-2 Bedene* A DOUBLE-FAULT! He IS human. However, it was already 40-0 – but Bedene senses an opportunity and when Federer doesn’t quite put away a short ball he punches a pass down the line. But Federer holds one point later. *Federer 6-3, 3-2 Bedene Bedene is moving pretty well but Federer is doing so even better, movng forward whenever he can. Credit to the world No 51, who is driven to deuce from 40-15 but withstands the pressure and hangs on. Federer 6-3, 3-1 Bedene* Bedene hasn’t done much wrong in this match – beating Federer requires more than that though – and he forces his first two break points by hanging tough. However, Bedene nets the return for the first and in the second, a point the Slovenian plays well, Federer skips round the backhand and batters the ball down the line. Opportunity snuffed. *Federer 6-3, 2-1 Bedene We can turn off Bagelwatch for a while (not that I’d ever activated it but some might have done watching that first break). Bedene is on the board in set No 2. Federer 6-3, 2-0 Bedene* Federer goes to serve-and-volley for the first two points of the game, executing perfectly and holds to 15. *Federer 6-3, 1-0 Bedene Not a good start for Bedene, who finds himself two break points down and Federer converts the first seemingly at will. He steps well inside the baseline against the second serve, driving a backhand return deep into the court and smashing away the resulting ball. Federer breaks first in the second. ROGER FEDERER WINS THE FIRST SET 6-3 Very typically smooth from the defending champion. He seals set point, eventually after dumping two into the net, with an aggressive point that is a microcosm for the set. The serve is good and he moves in to finish it off. *Federer 5-3 Bedene Nerves? What nerves? Bedene holds to love, forcing Federer to serve it out. Nice one, Aljaz. Federer 5-2 Bedene* After 13 straight points on his serve, Federer has finally lost one. Not much consolation for Bedene, who is serving to stay in the set after just 21 minutes. *Federer 4-2 Bedene The Slovenian stops the rot after three straight games against him with a hold to 15 that should make feel a whole lot better. Federer 4-1 Bedene* A third love hold for Federer. Perhaps the only solace for Bedene is that the Swiss did miss three of his first serves in that game… *Federer 3-1 Bedene Bedene quickly finds himself 15-40, facing break points agianst Federer for the first time in his career. He battles nobly to save them and another at advantage but the fourth is a bridge too far and Federer breaks for the first time at the 2018 Australian Open. Federer 2-1 Bedene* Federer sits down for the first time in the match without losing a point on serve. He still hasn’t missed a first serve either. This is just scary. *Federer 1-1 Bedene Against Nadal yesterday, it took Victor Estrella Burgos more than 20 minutes to get on the board. Bedene has managed it in just four. That will settle a few nerves. Federer 1-0 Bedene* Federer’s agression has become a hallmark of his late-career play, as has his serving. First game, he lands four first serves and holds to love. Woof. 8.10am: Players are on court, toss is done, Federer to serve first. They’ll have a little hit and then we will be underway in Melbourne. Federer is, almost, back. 7.45am: Nadal? Wins in three. Djokovic? Wins in three. Federer? Surely… It would be easy to say their is the pressure of the weight of expectation on the back of Federer, but I don’t think the man ever feels it. For Bedene, now flying the Slovenian again after failing to win his appeal to play for Great Britain in the Davis Cup, this is a massive uphill battle – bookmakers Betfair have Federer as a 1/50 favourite. They’ll be on court in 15 minutes’ time.

Aljaz Bedene is first on Court Two with an 11.30am start when he faces big-serving left-hander Gilles Muller.
The pair met two weeks ago with Muller, who is bidding to reach the last-16 for the first time, coming out on top in straight sets.
Then, in the women’s draw, Heather Watson faces Victoria Azarenka for a spot in the fourth round. The pair have met four times and Watson has never won a set. They are first on Centre Court.
Johanna Konta takes on Maria Sakkari after that one then it’s Andy Murray v Fabio Fognini to round off the day.
2.30pm: We’re into a Centre Court decider – and Watson is 0-30 down in the opening game.
But she roars back with almighty hold to get herself on the board. Her forehand went to put in that second set and she’ll need to refind her form if she is to come out on top here.
Azarenka, the former world No.1 no less, hits back and holds to 15 so we’re level at 1-1.
2.19pm: Bad news for Britain’s SW19 charge. Aljaz Bedene is now OUT. He loses 7-6 7-5 6-4 to Gilles Muller.
Over on Centre Court, Heather Watson is about to fall level at 1-1 with Victoria Azarenka. Aza is serving for the set at 5-1.
1.53pm: Bedene is never going to blow opponents away but he is a real agitator on court. He doesn’t easily go away.
However, he is going to have to show all his resilience if he is to beat Muller now, having lost the second set.
Unforced errors are the problem, really. Muller made 16 of them to Bedene’s 8 in the first set but the Brit is into double figures in the second (11) while his opponent has halved his own count.
The home favourite trails 6-7, 5-7. Needs something to change.
1.44pm: Watson breaks back! And she’s now serving for the set at 5-3.
What character she’s shown there – now can she hold her nerve?
Speaking of nerves, Azarenka’s are getting frayed. She’s just bashed her racquet on the turf after an unforced error makes it 30-15.
Watson then takes the set and Centre Court ERUPTS. What a start. Watson leads 6-3.
1.35pm: Until now. A double fault and Azarenka breaks to love.
I spoke to soon… Back on serve at 4-3.
1.31pm: “Come on Hev,” is the cry from Centre Court. The crowd are getting early senses that an upset could be on the cards here.
Watson is more than a match for Azarenka from the back of the court and she leads 4-2.

1.22pm: Well, well, well. Watson has just broken serve and now leads 2-0. The fans – the people, that is, not the makeshift paper being flustered in front of their faces for cooling – respond with a huge cheer.
Watson then holds serve when Azarenka sends a backhand wide and she now leads 3-0.
1.15pm: A reminder – and an ominous one of that. Watson has never, ever won a set against Azarenka. They’ve met four times.
Watson goes 15-40 down – cue sighing from Centre Court – before she wins the next four points in a row to hold for a 1-0 lead. Wonderful stuff.
Bedene, a set down to Gilles Muller, broke early in the second set but that one’s back on serve at 3-2.
1.11pm: Huge roar greets Heather Watson as she jogs to the back of the court.
Funnily enough, Watson and Azarenka meet each other again in the doubles later.
The Brit will serve first here.
12.54pm: You always felt Bedene was clinging on here and finally he breaks. Muller takes the tie-break 7-4 to secure the first set.
Centre Court action, where Heather Watson takes on Victoria Azarenka, gets underway in 10 or so minutes time.
12.35pm: Bedene is set point down here – but he saves it. Two more points and he takes the game.
First pump from Aljaz and why not? Wonderful character to hold there.
Muller responds with a few more big serves and he goes 6-5 up. Bedene srving to take it into a breaker.

12.23pm: It’s not all about the Brits today, or this morning. Amid a wealth of doubles action, Kei Nishikori is in action against Roberto Bautista Agut. It’s not going to plan, though. He gets broken in the 10th game of the set and goes 6-4 down.
Over on Court Two, meanwhile, James Gray says…
“Untidy of Bedene to allow Muller the chance to break not once, not twice but three times in game six of the first set.
“The Luxembourger takes the opportunity at the third call but immediately offers the same chances to Bedene.
“The first two are saved by big serves but at deuce, Bedene finds a terrific forehand pass and Muller double-faults to bring it back on serve.
“Bedene serving with new balls at 3-4 – and he holds – so we’re back level at 4-4.”
12.12pm: Solid start from Aljaz Bedene here, who has just saved a break point. Our man James Gray is there…
“Only John Isner (70) served more aces in first two rounds of Wimbledon than Gilles Muller (53).
“Aljaz Bedene looks up to it so far and is getting points off the Luxembourger, twice pushing him to deuce so far.
“Still on serve though, 3-2 in the first.”
11.57am: An update on Bethanie Mattek-Sands’ condition…
She will today undergo more scans on her horror Wimbledon knee injury.
Mattek-Sands, 30, was treated by medics on court before being carried off on a stretcher and taken straight to hospital yesterday.
Doctors closely monitored her condition overnight and the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) say more will be known following today tests.
“Bethanie of course thanks everyone for their kind wishes and messages of support,” a WTA statement added.
11.48am: Our man James Gray is out on Court Two for Aljaz Bedene…
“No2 Court is slowly filling up ahead of the arrival of Aljaz Bedene to take on Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller.
“One of those in attendance is Great Britain Davis Cup captain Leon Smith – who of course cannot select Bedene due to a rule barring players from representing two countries. Bedene has been frustrated by repeated rejected legal appeals having previously played dead rubbers for is native Slovenia.
“Muller meanwhile is an intriguing character. At 34, he started the year without ever having won an ATP Tour title but having popped his cherry in a final against Dan Evans in January, he promptly won a second – this time on grass – last month. A tough opponent for Bedene, who is now out to knock up.”

11.20am: Rafael Nadal is second on Court Two today against Karen Khachanov and he’s warming up now on Court 15.
He looks in ominous form and there’s hundreds crowding round to get a sneak peak of him in action.
On this form, Karen (yes, it’s a men’s draw match) should be a little scared.
11am: Four Brits into round four. Could it possibly happen?
Bookmaker Paddy Power are offering odds of 12/1 that they all progress.
British number ones Andy Murray (1/20) and Johanna Konta (1/6) are each heavy favourites to win their ties, while Heather Watson and Aljaz Bedene (both 15/8) face tougher tasks.
In the outright market, Konta (13/2) is now second favourite to claim the women’s crown – while Murray (4/1) has leap-frogged Novak Djokovic into fourth favourite for the men’s.
It’s 33/1 that both the men’s and women’s Wimbledon singles titles are claimed by a Brit.

Heather Watson got the ball rolling for the Brits with a stunning 6-0 6-4 win over Anastasija Sevastova – the 18th seed – in just 61 brutal minutes.
It proved to be the first sign that a dream day was on the cards.
Aljaz Bedene, the British number four, beat his good mate Damir Dzumhur in 6-3 3-6 6-3 6-3 to make it two in round three before Johana Konta won a 3hr-long epic.
In a match fitting for a final on a packed Centre Court, Konta beat Donna Vekic 7-6 4-6 10-8 to progress – a loss that had her plucky opponent in tears.
Andy Murray then became number four by overcoming the flamboyant Dustin Brown with ease 6-3 6-2 6-2 to make it a British job well done.
Konta beamed at the perfect day and said: “The reason for it is because we have got great players. I think that’s probably a good enough reason.
“All the players work very hard to make it into the second, third, fourth quarters, latter stages of every tournament. So I think it’s a great movement to be a part of personally for me.
“It’s also something that I’m sure is very exciting to the spectators that are coming to the Championships this year.
“I think that would be something that would be very exciting for them.”
Murray was equally happy as he set up a third-round meeting with Fabio Fognini – and remained unscathed in the process.
He played down any injury fears after the game and said: “My hip is OK. I have moved well in the first couple of matches, it hasn’t affected me. I have been getting good practices in and it feels good. Hopefully it stays that way.
“It’s been a good start, hopefully I can keep it going.”
Bedene, who had to deal with flying ants during his four-set win, will take on 16th seed Gilles Muller in the next round.
“He loves grass, he loves serve-and-volley play and he’s quite aggressive,” Bedene said.
“I played him a few weeks ago so I know, I wouldn’t say his weaknesses, because there aren’t many, but if I play my game, I’ve got a chance.”
On the flying ants, he added: “They did bother us, but when you are playing a point, you only see the ball.
“After the point they were just flying around. Hopefully that was just today and they will be gone by Friday.”
While Heather Watson, who meets Victoria Azarenka in round three, added: “Vika is an incredible player and person. I really respect how hard she works and how focused she is.
“I look forward to playing her. I know she has only just come back, but I expect her to be playing really well because I know she will have put in the hours and the work.
“You don’t get to where she’s got to in her career without, you know, being a really good player.”
Hundreds of flying ants bugged both players during the 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win – the infestation as bad on Court 3 as anywhere in SW19 – but could not distract the British no. 4 from booking his place in the third round of Wimbledon, where he will face Gilles Muller, for the first time in his career.
Slovenia-born Bedene had revealed that he was such close friends with Dzumhur of Bosnia that he had even lent him a couple of pairs of shorts and some shirts for his first round match.
But there was no sentiment today – and at one point early in the second set Dzumhur even complained to the umpire about one of the Bedene entourage sarcastically hand-clapping the error that led to a crucial break.
That aside, Bedene was a class above his opponent, serving well and dominating rallies under the watchful eye of Great Britain Davis Cup captain.
A failed two-year battle with the ITF means that Bedene remains unavailable for selection but British crowd were nevertheless very much behind him.
The 25-year-old had a punishing backhand but lacked the psychological strength to capitalise on any advantages that gave him. Bedene, on the other hand, looked both mentally and physically strong after his 4hr 24min tie-break fest against Ivo Karlovic on the opening day of the tournament.
Breaks were won and lost, but when Bedene started the fourth set by winning the opening two games, there was no way back for Dzumhur, who had conceded the break with four successive errors.
It was then only a matter of time – 2hr 7 mins to be precise – before Dzumhur slapped one final easy put-away, prompting Bedene to raise his arm in a gladiatorial salute to celebrate reaching the third round of Wimbledon for the first time in his career.
The 27-year-old British number three powered a backhand down the line that eluded the serve-and-volleying Croat after close to five hours of play on Court Three
It was the 13th break point of the match – and the first that was taken – as he sealed a 6-7 7-6 6-7 7-6 8-6 victory.
Bedene, who was born in Slovenia and become a British citizen in 2015 after eight years in the country, joins Andy Murray in the third round.
Bedene will play Damir Dzumhur, who beat Renzo Olivo 6-2 6-0 6-1 earlier today.
On a fine day for the home hopes, Heather Watson beat Maryna Zanevska 6-1 7-6 win in 90 minutes to move into the second round.
Watson plays Yulia Putintseva or Anastasija Sevastova in round two.
She will be joined there by Johanna Konta, who shrugged off any lingering injury doubts to win 6-2 6-2 over Su-Wei Hsieh
Although it wasn’t such good news for Naomi Broady, who fell to a 6-4 6-2 defeat to Irina-Camelia.
Broady’s second serve was brutally exposed – she won just 20 per cent of points – and failed to break her opponent’s serve.
Wildcard Cameron Norrie, making his debut at SW19, was also dumped out as he lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
