Big gaming companies get DHS help to keep players from becoming terrorists

Last December, the United Nations warned of an overlooked but critical “emerging terrorist threat”: extremists radicalizing members of online gaming communities.

Despite ample interest in saving gamers from such exploitation, experts say that a lack of research funding on the topic has put the gaming industry behind social networks when it comes to counterterrorism efforts. That’s starting to change, though. Within the past week, researchers told Ars that the US Department of Homeland Security has, for the first time, awarded funding—nearly $ 700,000—to a research group working directly with major gaming companies to develop effective counterterrorism methods and protect vulnerable gamers.

The new project will span two years. It’s spearheaded by Middlebury College’s Institute of International Studies, which hosts the Center on Terrorism, Extremism, and Counterterrorism (CTEC). Vice reported that other partners include a nonprofit called Take This—which focuses on gaming impacts on mental health—and a tech company called Logically—which Vice says works “to solve the problem of bad online behavior at scale.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) speaks in front of the U.S. Capitol on July 28, 2022.

  • Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez shared doubts about a woman of color being elected president one day.
  • "I admit to sometimes believing that I live in a country that would never let that happen," she told GQ.
  • She said her time in Congress has reinforced to her that "so many people in this country hate women."

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a new interview spoke candidly about her political future, expressing doubts that she or another woman of color could become president because of the "misogyny" and "patriarchy" she says she's endured first-hand as a congresswoman.

"I admit to sometimes believing that I live in a country that would never let that happen," she told GQ in an interview published Wednesday.

The congresswoman said her experience in Congress "has given me a front-row seat to how deeply and unconsciously, as well as consciously, so many people in this country hate women."

"They hate women of color," the New York lawmaker continued. "People ask me questions about the future. And realistically, I can't even tell you if I'm going to be alive in September. And that weighs very heavily on me."

Since Ocasio-Cortez shocked the country by winning her primary in 2018 and seized the national spotlight, she's experienced hostility from her fellow colleagues on both sides of the aisle. In July 2020, then-Republican Rep. Ted Yoho of Florida reportedly called her a "fucking bitch." Last November, Republican Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona tweeted out an edited anime video showing him killing Ocasio-Cortez. And in July, a conservative comedian sexually harassed Ocasio-Cortez using racist language outside the Capitol building.

Ocasio-Cortez has also become a target of right-wing media and conservative circles, and has faced a barrage of death threats. She's said she feared being raped and killed as rioters stormed the the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

"It's not just the right wing. Misogyny transcends political ideology: left, right, center. This grip of patriarchy affects all of us, not just women; men," she told GQ.

Ocasio-Cortez has repeatedly dismissed questions about a future presidential run. She told GQ that she battles an "inner conflict" between the presidency being unattainable for someone like her and her belief that "anything is possible."

"Sometimes little girls will say, 'Oh, I want you to be president,' or things like that," she told GQ. "It's very difficult for me to talk about because it provokes a lot of inner conflict in that I never want to tell a little girl what she can't do. And I don't want to tell young people what is not possible. I've never been in the business of doing that."

  • Intel has a new CEO in the form of Bob Swan, ending a search that started in the wake of former chief exec Brian Krzanich’s departure.
  • Swan had been interim CEO since Krzanich left in June 2018, and Intel’s CFO before that.
  • Before Intel, Swan had a long career in Silicon Valley and beyond: He was the CFO (and briefly CEO) of notorious dot-com flop Webvan, a venture investor, and other things besides.
  • Here’s a look at his career, from a long tenure at GE all the way to the top of Intel.

On Thursday, Intel named Robert “Bob” Swan as its new permanent CEO.

Swan is a familiar face for Intel shareholders and employees: He had been serving as CFO since 2016, and stepped up as interim CEO in June 2018, following the sudden departure of former chief exec Brian Krzanich.

The 58-year old executive has held number executive roles throughout his career, but leading $ 215 billion Intel will be Swan’s highest-profile gig yet.

But who exactly is Intel’s new CEO?

Here’s a closer look at Bob Swan’s life and career:

Robert “Bob” Swan is 58. He was born in Syracuse, New York and attended the University of Buffalo, where he received his undergraduate degree in business administration. Swan went on to earn an MBA from Binghamton University.

In 1999, Swan joined the dot-com grocery delivery company Webvan as VP of finance. Webvan launched with a ton of hype, and raised some $ 400 million in venture capital. Webvan raised another $ 375 million in an IPO the year of its launch, and hit a market cap of $ 7.9 billion on its first day of trading.

Curling fashion becoming more than those Norwegian pants https://briefnews.eu/curling-fashion-becoming-more-than-those-norwegian-pants/ https://briefnews.eu/curling-fashion-becoming-more-than-those-norwegian-pants/#respond Sun, 13 Jan 2019 12:33:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/curling-fashion-becoming-more-than-those-norwegian-pants/ NORTH BATTLEFORD, Sask. — It's hard to forget about those fancy curling pants from Norway.

Thomas Ulsrud and his Norwegian squad bolted into the curling fashion limelight at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver by wearing their splashy, patterned pants. For years they garnered a lot of attention at every bonspiel for them.

Norway second Christoffer Svae was the one behind his team's trademark eye-catching attire. The Norwegians were preparing for the Games when a miscommunication left them with less-than-desirable uniforms.

Svae took charge and ordered the first wave of flashy pants that became the team's signature look.

"We were going to practice with them but never play in them," Svae said. "But the last day of practice before the Olympics we were talking to some other Norwegian athletes from snowboarding and they said we should wear them."

The rest is history.

But if you assumed it was about to catch on in curling, think again. In a lot of ways, curling is reserved for the traditional — stepping outside of that familiar vibe is often frowned upon.

"Our sport is so conservative and singular. Why do we need to follow that mould when there are so many people in the sport who aren't that way?" Colin Hodgson said.

"We're pigeon-holing people into acting and looking a certain way and suppressing the flair that could exist in the sport."

Going out on a limb

Hodgson is the lead for Team Carruthers out of Manitoba. He's best-known for his funky hairstyles, something he started years ago after watching the Brad Pitt movie Fury.

"I still get some looks sometimes but growing up I've realized I'm not happy when I care about what those people say," Hodgson said. "Leads don't get that much attention so I have to find a way to stand out. I'm living in the shadow of Reid and Mike [McEwen]."

Hodgson wants to change the way people view curling through what the players are wearing. That's why a few years ago he started his own apparel company called Dynasty Curling with business partner Faron Asham.

"One of the first jerseys we did was something crazy, the Viking uniform for Edin. This was five years ago. That just changed it all. They wanted to go out on a limb. We saw how popular it was immediately and our company exploded because of it," Hodgson said.

There were four teams who took a chance on Hodgson's company early on. Teams skipped by Edin, Chelsea Carey, Kerri Einarson and Val Sweeting all signed up to be the first to wear Dynasty Curling uniforms.

"They kind of took a chance on us. My own team wasn't even using my apparel because we had a previous sponsorship," says Hodgson.

Now he is the official clothier of more than 1,000 rinks from 25 different countries, including the team of former NFL players skipped by Jared Allen.

"They're wearing our apparel. I got that call in the middle of the summer this year and had to keep it quiet until they announced they would be curling and wearing them," Hodgson said.

It's been a wild fashion curling journey for Hodgson who just secured the contract for Curling Canada events over the next four years. He hopes to push the limits when it comes to traditional looks in the traditional game.

"It's going away from the boring and conservative to bright and vibrant. It's going along with the movement," he said.

White belts and Technicolor trousers

One of the first teams to really shake things up was Team Howard when they introduced white belts to their wardrobe. At the time, it was something Glenn Howard says just wasn't the norm.

"I'm still wearing it," Howard said, laughing. "I think it was Richie Hart back in the day who came up with that when Craig, Brent and I played together."

Howard said they were always wearing white belts golfing and thought they could do it on the ice too. But it wasn't always met with a positive response.

"We kind of got the hairy eyeball for a while but if you see the junior curlers are all wearing them, I love the way the game is going."

This week in North Battleford, Rylan Kleiter's Saskatchewan rink had psychedelic pants — similar to some of the Norwegians' finest. They were also met with some side-eyes at times.

Howard, who has been around the game longer than most on the ice, says he wants to see more of it.

"It spices up our game. I think it's great. We're all wearing black pants. Brad Gushue is wearing blue. McEwen had the red pair years ago. "I love the fact the there are new pants coming out."

Bohemian Rhapsody: Becoming Freddie Mercury – Rami Malek’s movement coach reveals all https://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-becoming-freddie-mercury-rami-maleks-movement-coach-reveals-all/ https://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-becoming-freddie-mercury-rami-maleks-movement-coach-reveals-all/#respond Tue, 25 Dec 2018 14:49:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-becoming-freddie-mercury-rami-maleks-movement-coach-reveals-all/

Malek’s performance as the late musician has gone down a treat with viewers, and there’s even been a Golden Globe nomination – and speculation that an Oscar nod could follow. Despite the film’s lacklustre reviews, it has broken box office records and is the most successful musical biopic of all time. So how did Malek get it so right?

Speaking to Billboard, movement coach Polly Bennett opened up on the complex nature of Mercury’s physicality.

“[Freddie] was a long-distance runner at school and a boxer,” she said of his athleticism.

“This gives us a reason why Freddie ran across the stage and punched the air, and [allows me to explain to] Rami: ‘This is why that character moves the way that he does.’

“It’s interesting that Freddie only did solo sports, rather than football or rugby or any sort of team sport.

“In itself, that creates a physical attitude.”

Mercury was self-conscious about his teeth, which was reflected in his physicality.

“If you’ve got something that you’re self-conscious of, your body is going to respond,” Bennett said.

“It’s the same for Freddie’s large teeth. On stage, he holds his microphone incredibly close to his lips.

“He’s using the apparatus as both his power and his self-consciousness.”

Malek himself has spoken about how he wanted a movement coach rather than a choreographer to help capture Mercury’s unpredictability.

His performance was widely praised by not just the public, but by Queen icon Brian May.

Bohemian Rhapsody is out now.

  • Amid international uproar over the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, some members of Saudi Arabia’s ruling family are agitating to prevent Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman from becoming king, three sources close to the royal court said.
  • Rather, they are discussing the possibility with other family members that after the king’s death, Prince Ahmed bin Abdulaziz, 76, a younger full brother of King Salman and uncle of the crown prince, could take the throne, according to the sources.
  • When the king dies or is no longer be able to rule, the 34-member Allegiance Council, a body representing each line of the ruling family to lend legitimacy to succession decisions, would not automatically declare MbS the new king.

LONDON (Reuters) – Amid international uproar over the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, some members of Saudi Arabia’s ruling family are agitating to prevent Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman from becoming king, three sources close to the royal court said.

Dozens of princes and cousins from powerful branches of the Al Saud family want to see a change in the line of succession but would not act while King Salman — the crown prince’s 82-year-old father — is still alive, the sources said. They recognize that the king is unlikely to turn against his favorite son, known in the West as MbS.

Being America’s ally does not mean becoming a vassal state — Macron https://briefnews.eu/being-americas-ally-does-not-mean-becoming-a-vassal-state-macron/ https://briefnews.eu/being-americas-ally-does-not-mean-becoming-a-vassal-state-macron/#respond Wed, 14 Nov 2018 21:19:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/being-americas-ally-does-not-mean-becoming-a-vassal-state-macron/ French President Emmanuel Macron has said he wasn’t offended by a slew of angry tweets directed at him earlier this week by Donald Trump, saying that he understood the US president was just playing to a domestic audience.

Macron, who was speaking to reporters on the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier, said that respect was due between the US and France, two long-time allies, recalling that France was at America’s side during its fight for independence — something which many on Twitter also tried to remind Trump after he mocked French losses during both world wars.

“At every moment of our history, we were allies, so between allies, respect is due,” Macron said. Asked about Trump’s tweets, the French president said: “I think he’s playing politics, and I let him play politics.”

Macron also said that being an American ally does not mean being a “vassal” state. “The United States are our historic ally and will continue to be. It’s the ally with which we take all the risks, with which we carry out the most complicated operations. But being an ally doesn’t mean being a vassal state,” he said.

Macron’s comments stand in contrast to an earlier statement on Wednesday from a French government spokesperson who complained that Trump should have shown “common decency” toward France, given that his tweets came on the third anniversary of deadly terror attacks in Paris.

Trump posted five tweets on Tuesday in which he mocked French losses during the two world wars and said the French president had “a very low approval rating in France.”

The cost of getting a four-year undergraduate degree is more expensive than ever. But does that mean college degrees are becoming less valuable? Not necessarily.

A college degree is still advantageous, but it can get you even further if you live in certain metropolitan areas.

MagnifyMoney recently looked at the top cities a bachelor’s degree is most valuable in the United States. To determine this, they ranked income, employment, and related data from 0 to 100 for residents with a degree and those without a degree across the US’s 50 largest metropolitan areas. A final score was awarded to each location to indicate the value of a bachelor’s degree there.

MagnifyMoney found that the earnings and opportunities that come from holding a bachelor’s degree are highest in wealthy and highly educated cities, such as San Jose, California, and Washington, DC.

Below, see the top 25 cities where a bachelor’s degree will get you the most for your job, money, and home.
