Federer took six months off in 2016 after being knocked out of Wimbledon by Milos Raonic to deal with knee and back problems before returning to win the Australian Open.

In that final the Swiss beat Nadal, who had also just returned from an extended break due to a wrist injury.

However, when both men were sat on the sidelines during winter 2016, six-time Grand Slam champion Becker didn’t think the game would get the chance to welcome either man back into its competitive ranks.

“I can’t praise Roger and Rafa enough. When I heard that both players were taking four, five, six months off, I was very doubtful that Roger would come back, especially given his age and in Rafa’s case given the nature of his style: he’s a very physical player,” said Becker, speaking ahead of the Laureus 2018 World Sports Awards, which both celebrate sporting excellence and harness the power to sport to promote change.

“But they’ve proven everybody wrong. How much determination, will power, discipline but ultimately love for the game they must have because they’re champions.

“They don’t need to come back. They made enough money, enough No 1 rankings and all that.

“So the only reason for them to come back is because they love to compete and they love the game.

“We can’t praise them enough or give them enough awards for this.

“Once they stop, we will truly understand their accomplishments.”

and split the Grand Slams in 2017: Federer took the Australian and Wimbledon titles while Nadal won the US Open and a startling 10th French Open.

However, the Spaniard has once again been on the injury table after pulling out with a knee problem during the Australian Open in January.

And while he hit out at the ATP for their scheduling and choice of surfaces, Becker believes injury is an occupational hazard.

“Tennis is a very physical game, period,” Becker added.

“And you can’t admire the top guys enough for playing 75, 80 matches a year.

“In most other sports, that’s not possible. Roger and Rafa have done that. Serena and Garbine have done that. It’s a tough sport. Injuries happen.

“It was a bit unfortunate that last year at the same time Murray and Djokovic called it a year after Wimbledon. It’s because of years and years and years of abuse.

“Unfortunately at the same time you have Stan Wawrinka, Kei Nishikori and others taking some time off to come back. It’s the nature of the beast of being professional.

“You’ve had it in the 90s, you’ve had it in the 80s. It’s just part of our game.

“It’s becoming more public now because some of the very top players can’t play.

“Even more so, talking about Davis Cup or other changes, they just have to go with the times. You can’t ask Roger and Rafa to play every week. It’s just not possible. You have to find the best possible schedule for everyone to have a long career.”

I'm A Celebrity 2017: Boris Becker 'signs up for £500K fee' after declaring bankruptcy https://briefnews.eu/im-a-celebrity-2017-boris-becker-signs-up-for-500k-fee-after-declaring-bankruptcy/ https://briefnews.eu/im-a-celebrity-2017-boris-becker-signs-up-for-500k-fee-after-declaring-bankruptcy/#respond Sun, 08 Oct 2017 14:26:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/im-a-celebrity-2017-boris-becker-signs-up-for-500k-fee-after-declaring-bankruptcy/

The 49-year-old former tennis ace was previously declared bankrupt in June and is rumoured to be £54 million in debt, a figure which his lawyers have stated they “vehemently deny”.

Now, The Sun states that Boris will accept a staggering £500,000 pay check to go into the jungle for this year’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!

“As everyone knows, Boris’ financial situation is desperate,” a source close to the star told the publication. “He needs a way to make a lot of money fast, and has looked to I’m A Celebrity to help him do exactly that.”

The insider revealed that Boris’ team are currently in talks with ITV regarding his fee, and are aiming to achieve the whopping six-figure sum.

The three-time Wimbledon champion has been battling financial difficulties for some time and was declared bankrupt over a longstanding £3 million debt with private bank Arbuthnot Latham & Co.

Shortly afterwards, Boris’ £65,000 Maserati was towed after he parked illegally outside South Kensington Private Members Club.

US Open 2017 final: Rafael Nadal warned about Kevin Anderson ‘weapons’ by Boris Becker https://briefnews.eu/us-open-2017-final-rafael-nadal-warned-about-kevin-anderson-weapons-by-boris-becker/ https://briefnews.eu/us-open-2017-final-rafael-nadal-warned-about-kevin-anderson-weapons-by-boris-becker/#respond Sun, 10 Sep 2017 20:33:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-open-2017-final-rafael-nadal-warned-about-kevin-anderson-weapons-by-boris-becker/

Nadal has not lost to Anderson in any of their four previous meetings and has only dropped one set in those matches.

But the South African, playing in his first Grand Slam final, is in the form of his life and has served a tournament-topping 114 aces so far at the US Open this year.

And Becker, who won the 1989 US Open and has worked with some of the world’s best players as a coach, reckons Nadal would be remiss to believe the match will be a walk in the Meadows.

“For Rafa, this is the 23rd Grand Slam final: talk about experience, talk about being a veteran,” Becker told Eurosport.

“He’s been here many times before. He won this very tournament in 2013 for the last time but he hasn’t done very well since.

“Meanwhile, Kevin Anderson in his very first Grand Slam final which means unchartered territory. Is he going to be overwhelmed by the situation? Is it going to be a Madison Keys situation?

“We hope not because Anderson has the weapons to hurt Rafael Nadal.”

The withdrawal of Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka and Andy Murray with injuries meant much of the first week of the US Open was spent talking about who wasn’t there rather than who was.

But Nadal and rival Roger Federer remained – and were on course for a first ever Flushing Meadows clash before Juan Martin del Potro knocked an injury-hampered Federer out in the quarter-finals.

Anderson meanwhile was able to progress through the bottom half of the draw with few obvious threats except for nerves and he overcame an early wobble against Pablo Carreno Busta to book his spot in the final.

And Becker believes that managing his nerves will be one of the early challenges for the 31-year-old.

“Kevin Anderson warmed up very late – around 2pm – on one of the small outside courts while Rafa played this morning on the main show court,” Becker added.

“I was in the players lounge and Rafa was with his team, minding his own business, while Kevin was warming up. It was a funny situation.

“A year ago I was a coach helping Novak and the key is to not change your routine or mix it up too much.

“You want to warm up on the main court but that’s busy with the women’s doubles and everyone wanting to warm up.

“So last year we were actually scrambling to get a proper warm-up and ended up on Louis Armstrong which was a mistake.

“I understand Kevin’s point of view saying I want to keep my routine, though. It depends how the players feel comfortable.”

How Boris Becker blew $167 million https://briefnews.eu/how-boris-becker-blew-167-million/ https://briefnews.eu/how-boris-becker-blew-167-million/#respond Mon, 17 Jul 2017 23:32:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/how-boris-becker-blew-167-million/

Boris Becker continues to work as a tennis broadcaster.

BANKRUPT Wimbledon legend Boris Becker may have lost a chunk of his $ 167 million fortune through poor investments in Nigerian oil.

A report by Germany’s Spiegel magazine, based on documents the publication says it was shown by whistleblowing website Football Leaks, claims the 49-year-old former tennis star had business ties with the Nigerian oil and gas industry.

At one point he considered a single investment of more than $ 10 million — although it was not clear if Becker went through with the deal.

It’s the latest revelation about the former playboy who was declared bankrupt in a British court last month despite amassing huge amounts of prizemoney during his reign at the top of the sport.

Tax problems, failed business ventures and divorce settlements have all been offered as the cause of the financial woes of a man who was dubbed “Bonking Boris” early in his career.

In the early 1990s, he appeared to settle down with model wife Barbara Feltus, and they made headlines by posing nude together for a magazine.

But it all came crashing down over revelations that he had fathered a love child with Russian model Angela Ermakova after they hooked up in the broom closet at a Japanese restaurant in London — while a pregnant Feltus was in the hospital.

“[The model] looked directly at me, the look of the hunter that said, ‘I want you,’ ” he admitted in his 2003 autobiography, “Stay A Moment Longer.”

“There she was again, walking twice past the bar. And again this look. A little while later she left her table for the toilet. I followed behind … Five minutes small talk and then straight away into the nearest possible place and down to business.”

A lengthy and bitter divorce battle with Feltus — broadcast live on German TV — wound up costing him $ 25 million, his luxury condo in Miami and custody of their two sons.

He was then forced to cough up another $ 1.2 million to buy his baby mamma a home of her own in London.

Becker’s property woes didn’t stop there.

After years of investigations, German authorities in 2002 busted him for almost $ 2 million in tax evasion, revealing that he had been living in his homeland during his years as a pro while claiming to live in Monaco.

Authorities tried to put Becker behind bars, but he got off with a hefty fine and a suspended sentence. He claimed the ordeal cost him his career.

“Because of this tax business, I have not been able to sleep easily since the first house search [in 1996],” he told the court at the time. “It is notable that I was unable to win a tournament thereafter.”

But the former playboy has also been beset by a series of failed business ventures — a sports website, an organic food business, and more notably, a planned 19-story high-rise in Dubai called the Boris Becker Business Tower, whose backers went bust in 2011.

In 2012, Becker fell behind on debts he owed to contractors for work on his luxury villa in Majorca, Spain, and a judge repossessed the property that he bought in the 1990s — a sprawling, 62-acre complex with a guesthouse, pool, tennis and basketball courts and an orange grove.

He was declared bankrupt by a British court last month after failing to pay a longstanding debt.

A lawyer for the six-time Grand Slam champion pleaded with a Bankruptcy Court registrar in London for a last chance to pay a debt that Becker has owed to private bankers Arbuthnot Latham & Co. since 2015.

“One has the impression of a man with his head in the sand,” said the registrar, who said she watched Becker play on Centre Court at Wimbledon.

Becker, who was born in Germany and lives in London, recently coached Novak Djokovic and has been a TV commentator.

His lawyer, John Briggs, had argued there was sufficient evidence to show that Becker would be able to pay the debt through a refinancing arrangement, involving remortgaging a property in Mallorca, which was expected to raise 6 million euros ($ 8.8 million).

Mr Briggs also said Becker was “not a sophisticated individual when it comes to finances,” and that bankruptcy was likely to have an adverse effect on Becker’s image.

Cilic broke down in tears at 6-4 3-0 down and was spoken to on court by a doctor.

It was unclear what exactly had gone wrong with the doctor returning again at the end of the set, which he lost 6-1.

Becker, working for the BBC, said: “We’ve got an explanation of what went wrong.

“He had a huge blister on his foot and couldn’t walk anymore.

“I hope they’ve fixed it.

“I just hope for the sake of the spectators the final will be more of a match now.”

A medical timeout was called at the end of the set, during which Cilic had strapping removed and reapplied on his foot.

Appearing alongside Becker in the commentary box, Andrew Castle said: “There’s a certain amount of turmoil in his head now.

“He’s a little embarrassed. It’s only been going on an hour and 18 minutes.

“He’s a little disappointed with how hes playing so far.”

Wimbledon 2017: Andy Murray showed he is fit enough in Alexander Bublik win – Boris Becker https://briefnews.eu/wimbledon-2017-andy-murray-showed-he-is-fit-enough-in-alexander-bublik-win-boris-becker/ https://briefnews.eu/wimbledon-2017-andy-murray-showed-he-is-fit-enough-in-alexander-bublik-win-boris-becker/#respond Mon, 03 Jul 2017 15:22:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/wimbledon-2017-andy-murray-showed-he-is-fit-enough-in-alexander-bublik-win-boris-becker/

Coming into the tournament with doubts over a hip injury, Murray beat Russian qualifier Bublik in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.

Becker says there were signs of the injury but overall it looked good for the world No 1.

“We weren’t sure at the beginning but we are much smarter now,” Becker said on the BBC.

“I think he is fit enough, yes he did wobble, he did limp.

“But I think as the match went on he got more confident, mostly with his body, with his hip.

“He can play tennis on grass, we knew before. Excellent start.”

Bublik started well and had two break points in the first game of the match but failed to take them.

And Becker says that was a vital moment in the outcome of the match.

“I think that was probably the most important game of the whole match when Andy started his championship,” he added.

“He was 15-40 down but Bublik didn’t convert and Andy grew, got better, took his first break points to go up 3-1 and never really looked back.

“Another stat that was important was the 15 aces against the 12 double faults, it’s not a good percentage.

“All in all Bublik, I like what I see. Talented, promising but a lot of work.”

The registrar, Christine Derrett, said there was a lack of credible evidence that his debt would be paid soon. She refused to adjourn the case for a further 28 days and announced a bankruptcy order.

“One has the impression of a man with his head in the sand,” said the registrar, who said she watched Becker play on Centre Court at Wimbledon.

Mr Briggs said it was expected the deal would be approved by a Spanish bank in about one month.

Mr Briggs also said Becker was “not a sophisticated individual when it comes to finances,” and that bankruptcy was likely to have an adverse effect on Becker’s image.

“He should have thought about that a long time ago,” the registrar said.

–From the June 2017 issue
-Over a 26-year career at Lotus, Matt Becker has had a hand in the chassis tuning of approximately 50 vehicles, although he can talk publicly about only a handful of them. The various automakers that contracted Lotus through the years typically paid for both Becker’s expertise and his discretion. The cars he can take credit for—such as the nimble and docile second-gen Lotus Elise and the 2010 Evora—speak to why his talents were in such demand. Becker left Lotus in 2015 for Aston Martin, where he is now the chief of vehicle attribute engineering.

–

C/D: Is it ever a challenge to determine the tuning philosophy for a particular vehicle?

–

MB: That’s where some of the art comes in. In my head, I know how I want a car to feel. You need to understand what compromises you are going to make, because ultimately you are going to have to make some compromises. My philosophy is cars don’t need to be uncomfortable to steer and handle well. The other thing for me is the linearity of the response of the car is critical. The first thing I look for is to make sure the rear axle has the right level of connection. Rear-axle stiffness laterally has a massive influence on how a car feels and steers. There’s an old saying, “If you think it’s the front, it’s the rear. If you think it’s the rear, it’s the rear,” because everything reacts around the rear axle, so it’s absolutely critical to get rear-axle feel correct. Once you’ve got that, the rest of the car will sort of come together.

–

C/D: You followed your father’s footsteps into chassis tuning. Do you remember how old you were when you began to understand his job?

–

MB: My parents split up when I was about seven years old, so I used to see my father every weekend and he’d always have a different Lotus and he lived about half an hour from where my mother lived. He’d always be flicking the car around, doing lane changes, and looking for different behavior in the car. I used to ask him, “Can you explain to me what you’re doing?” and he said: “I’m looking for the phasing of the response of the car front to rear. I’m looking for the vertical motions of the car. Do they feel balanced front to rear?” All this sort of stuff was imparted to me when I was really young.

–

Q&A with Matt Becker, Ex-Lotus (and Current Aston Martin) Chassis Whisperer

–

C/D: How has the job changed with the advent of electronically adjustable suspension technology?

–

MB: You can’t get away from the fact that chassis electronics massively enhance performance. It gives you another layer of tuning and opportunities for things you can do with a chassis. I do wonder whether passive-suspension cars have a bit of a limited shelf life now. As long as the electronics are done correctly—and this comes back to the artistic side—they add performance. They add capability. The Elise is still one of the best driver’s cars out there, in a passive sense, but it’s a very niche marketplace now.

–

C/D: Does it disappoint you to see those very analog cars replaced by today’s computerized machines?

–

MB: That’s just evolution, isn’t it? Pure passive cars are very communicative, but I actually like the challenge of working with more systems on a car, because it still comes down to this artwork of how you make a car feel connected and engaging. That’s the challenge for the engineer, unless he’s doing an S-class.

–

–

C/D: What’s the most difficult part of a chassis engineer’s job?

–

MB: Damper tuning. Tire development is actually quite easy, because when you get different constructions and compounds in tires, it’s very easy to pick up subjective results in them. To know how to tune the shims within the damper is absolute artwork. That’s where you can really either cock it up or deliver really good results.
