John and Paul had one of the most famous songwriting partnerships in music history. But while they introduced the world to many of The Beatles’ greatest songs, it wasn’t always an easy ride during their creative process. Now Paul’s official biographer Barry Miles, who is working on The People’s Beatles Project to crowdsource an archive of Beatles’ fan pictures, has revealed what he thinks is a little-known fact about the pair’s relationship. Speaking exclusively with Express.co.uk, Paul’s friend since 1965 said: “The songwriting relationship and friendship was so deep that it transcended any bickering over money or management.”

He continued: “Paul said that on a number of occasions they’d be in the middle of an argument and John would just pull his little granny glasses down the end of his nose, look over the top and say, ‘It’s only me’ and then go back to shouting and blinding and swearing.”

“You can’t go through something like Beatlemania without being totally close to the other members. 

“For all those years they were in that strange bubble, just travelling around the world.”

Miles also claims John’s wit was actually mistaken for rudeness used as a defence mechanism.

He added: “John was always a prickly, difficult character and a lot of the so-called rapier wit was really just old-style rudeness really – because he’d had a really quite dysfunctional upbringing. 

“Liverpool was a tough city to grow up in back then, maybe still is. 

“So he had a lot of defences and what’s seemed like an argumentative, distant relationship toward the end was still there.”

He said: “There was one incident at the height of Beatlemania in 1965 when he actually drove right down through France to the south coast in disguise.

“He had a false moustache and had his hair combed differently.

“In fact, he was turned away from a French club because he didn’t look cool enough!

“And then he came back as a Beatle and they couldn’t do enough to usher him in and give him the best table.”

Back in 1970 The Beatles split after a decade together becoming what is probably the most influential band in history.

And over the years there have been all kinds of rumours surrounding what caused the breakup.

McCartney and Lennon certainly had a clash and fans have debated how much of an influence Yoko Ono, John’s wife, was on this.

But now in a new interview, McCartney has revealed she was not to blame.

Speaking with Howard Stern on , the 76-year-old said: “There was a meeting where John came in and said, ‘I’m leaving the group.’

“And looking back on it, he’d reached that stage in his life. We all had.

“Even though we thought she was intrusive because she used to sit in on the recording sessions and we’d never had anything like that.

“But looking back on it, you think, ‘The guy was totally in love with her. And you’ve just got to respect that.’ So we did. And I do.”

He added: “The nice thing for me is seeing John there, him being right-handed, me being left-handed, it felt to me like I was looking in a mirror.

“Obviously, it was very successful. So that was a way I had learned to write and it was the way I liked to write and Elvis [Costello, his new collaborator] was very happy to work like that. 

“So it was like a repeat of that process, and so he was John, basically, and I was Paul.”

The typed letter to Atlanta DJ Paul Drew, who travelled with the band, was signed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr in September 1965.

It reads: “Dear Paul, we just thought that we would like to write to you all and say thanks very much for your help on the tour.

“We enjoyed it and appreciated your patience and co-operation. Hope to see you next year.“

John Lennon, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr all signed with their first names only, while George Harrison signed with his first and last name.

The letter, on NEMS Enterprises headed paper, is accompanied with a letter from press officer Tony Barrow, confirming details for the group’s 1965 tour.

NEMS Enterprises was Beatles manager Brian Epstein’s company.

Both will be sold at Henry Aldridge and Son auctioneers in Devizes, Wiltshire, on Saturday.

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge described the letter as an “extremely rare” piece of rock and roll history.

He said: “Anything signed by all four Beatles is highly collectable but to have it on NEMS stationary and addressed to Paul Drew, one of architects of Top 40 radio takes it to another level.”

The letters are expected to fetch between £8,000 and £12,000.

As interpreted here by the always brilliant Unthank sisters, Rachel and Becky, they shimmer with the same delicate brilliance as Nick Drake’s own music, pieces like What Can A Song Do To You?, Little Weaver Bird and, especially, Bird In The Blue, almost unbearably moving. 

Between the tracks, Nick’s sister Gabrielle reads some of her mother’s poems, including the wonderful Martha: “I live hard and oh I hardly live/Puffed on the dreary wind of little fears.” 

The accompaniment throughout, devised and largely played by Adrian McNally, blends piano, fiddle and delicate woodwind textures, but the strength of the Unthanks, as ever, lies in the fragile embroidery of the sisters’ close harmony singing. 

One of the albums of the year so far. 

EMILY BARKER Sweet Kind Of Blue (Everyone Sang/Kartel) – out now 

An Australian singer-songwriter, who has worked extensively in Britain, Barker may be best known for her theme tune to the Kenneth Branagh detective series Wallander.

On her third solo album she decamps to Sam Phillips’s iconic studio in Memphis, where Elvis famously recorded. 

The result, initially, is a little odd, Barker’s voice seemingly too folky and soft-edged to live with the gutsy r’n’b of the opening Sweet Kind Of Blue. 

But then comes a superb ballad, Sister Goodbye, dedicated to pioneering gospel rock’n’roller Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and suddenly the album comes alive. 

TOM WILLIAMS All Change (Caroline International) – out Friday 

Teacher of songwriting and guitar to schoolchildren, in between his own music-making, Williams recruited a bunch of music tech students from Leeds Beckett University to make this, his fifth album, and it’s a peach. 

From the grandiose opener Everyone Needs A Home to the sweetly intimate Sometimes and Kinks-like Get High this is catchy and intelligent pop composition at its very best. 

THE BEATLES Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band Anniversary Deluxe Edition (Apple/Universal, 2CDs) – out Friday

Half a century on, Sgt. Pepper remains the greatest song cycle in rock, from Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds to the still heartbreaking She’s Leaving Home. 

Newly mixed by Giles Martin, and with 34 unreleased recordings. Beautiful, universal and unforgettable

Palette-Swap Ninja have re-written the lyrics to the entirety of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, song by song, for one very special reason.

Now, when each song is played chronologically, it perfectly fits Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope.

Starting with the title track, transformed here to become Princess Leia’s Stolen Death Star Plans, it moves on to With Illicit Help From Your Friends – a rejig of With a Little Help from My Friends.

And these two songs alone cover the first five minutes of the movie.

It’s an incredible achievement, and that first double-song video has already racked up over a quarter of a million views on YouTube since being uploaded at the weekend.

With Star Wars Day set for May 4, its popularity is only going to skyrocket.

Later songs include Luke Is In The Desert – a new version of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds – and AA Twenty Three; their take on When I’m Sixty Four.

The videos have gone down brilliantly on Reddit, where they have gained even more traction.

“This is incredibly nerdy, and f**king amazing,” one person said. “I love it. 

“I’m watching it and my mind is going in separate directions because I love Star Wars and I love the Beatles.”

Another wrote: “So amazing. The ending brought tears to my eyes, so perfect. That wonderful piano chord with the Death Star exploding.”

Someone else even went so far as to say: “I legitimately like this more than the movie.”

For their part, the makers said on their website: “After five long years, we are thrilled to announce that our new album is available today — and it’s free!

“This year marks two important pop-culture milestones: The 40th anniversary of Star Wars on May 25, and the 50th anniversary of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band a week later, June 1. 

“Our new album merges both into one full-length concept album titled Princess Leia’s Stolen Death Star Plans. It’s the entire Beatles album as accurately as we could record it, only now it tells the story of Star Wars: A New Hope — in order. 

“We sweat the details on both sides in an effort to do both cultural milestones justice.”

They added: “Writing hyper-specific lyrics that match the original songs’ cadences; reverse-engineering everything the Beatles recorded, from distorted saxophone riffs to Indian tabla rhythms; recording everything from scratch and learning as we went — well, that’s what takes five years.

“We’re very proud. We’re very happy. We’re very tired. And if you like what you hear, we only ask that you spread the word.”

The next Star Wars film – Episode VIII: The Last Jedi – is out on December 15.

“Weird Al” Yankovic has been delighting audiences with his parodies of popular songs for decades, and later this year, will release a career-spanning boxed set. In preparation for its release, the singer has released his parody of The Beatles’ “Tax Man”, fittingly titled “Pac-Man”.

Squeeze Box: The Complete Works of “Weird Al” Yankovic, is set to be released in November, and will contain all 14 of Weird Al’s albums, as well as a bonus album containing unreleased and rare tracks, including “Pac-Man”. Fittingly, the set will be shaped like the accordion that he’s become known for.

Yankovic originally recorded “Pac-Man” in 1982, two years after the classic video game was first released. Speaking to Nerdist, he noted that he recorded the song in his garage, and sent it to Dr. Demento, the DJ who brought his music to a wider audience. The song played on the radio for a couple of weeks, only to receive “a cease and desist letter from some attorneys representing the Beatles. Dr. Demento couldn’t play it anymore.”

While a bootleg version of the song has made the rounds around the internet (you can find it on YouTube) in the years since, Yankovic noted it wasn’t until now that he and his manager received permission to release the song for the boxed set.

The iconic Beatles star will have his relationship with Ono documented in the as-yet-untitled movie, which will also focus on their anti-war cuases.

Anthony McCarten, who penned Theory of Everything, is set to write the script; whilst Michael De Luca and Immersive Pictures’ Josh Bratman will produce with Ono.

There’s currently no word on casting, but expect speculation on who’ll play Lennon to be at fever pitch as development continues.

“The story will focus on ripe and relevant themes of love, courage and activism in the U.S. — with the intention of inspiring today’s youth to stand up for and have a clear vision for the world they want,” De Luca said, according to the Hollywood Reporter. 

“I am also honoured and privileged to be working with Yoko Ono, Anthony McCarten and Josh Bratman to tell the story of two amazing global icons.”

De Luca certainly knows his way around a blockbuster, having masterminded the likes of Moneyball, The Social Network and Captain Phillips.

Lennon and Ono first met in 1966, two years before he and first wife Cynthia filed for divorce.

During their 11-year marriage, they were heavily focussed on activism and their efforts to promote world peace.

The Beatles, of course, are perhaps the most iconic British band of all time,  and have sold more singles in this country than any other act.

According to the RIAA, they’re also the best-selling act in the US – having sold 178 million certified units. Their songs are currently at the centre of an ongoing legal battle.

Lennon died in December 1980 at the age of 40, after being shot in the back outside his apartment in New York. 

His killer, Mark David Chapman, was denied parole for the ninth time in 2016.
