  • Goldman Sachs’ analyst is one of the most bearish Tesla analysts on Wall Street, with a “sell” rating and $ 210 price target — 40% below where shares are trading.
  • Companies generally favor banks whose analysts rate them favorably. 
  • Musk is no stranger to hating Tesla bears, and interrupted two analysts with “sell” ratings on the company’s first-quarter conference call.

Elon Musk hasn’t been one to hide his disdain for Tesla skeptics on Wall Street.

But when it came time to hire bankers to advise him on taking the company private, the Tesla CEO enlisted a bank home to one of the most bearish Tesla analysts on Wall Street. Goldman Sachs’ automotive analyst David Tamberrino has had a “sell” rating on the stock since February 2017.

  • Equity strategists at Bank of America Merrill Lynch raised their year-end price target on the S&P 500 to 3,000 from 2,800. 
  • “We are watching for signs to temper our enthusiasm on the S&P 500,” they said in a note. Still, they noted that the year right before a market peak is usually one of the most profitable. 
  • They see evidence that investors aren’t getting ready to exit the stock market just yet. 

Bank of America Merrill Lynch just got even more optimistic on the stock market, but is on standby for any reason to be less bullish. 

The equity strategists led by Savita Subramanian raised their year-end target on the S&P 500 to 3,000 from 2,800, implying an 11% gain for the market this year. The index has already risen 6% this year to within 3% of where the average year-end forecast on Wall Street projected it would end the year. 

Underpinning BAML’s new forecast is evidence that investors aren’t heading for the exits anytime soon.

The firm’s survey of fund managers shows that cash positions are at a five-year low. The so-called great rotation out of bonds and into stocks still hasn’t happened, as the bond market continues to extend its three-decade bull market. And although stocks are expensive by many valuation measures, they’re still historically cheap compared to bonds. 

BAML’s higher forecast was also driven by the recently passed tax cut plan, which the firm expects will contribute to 6% growth in normalized earnings per share. 

But there’s still the nagging question of when the bull market will run out of steam, or before that, when the market resumes having regular pullbacks. After all, as Subramanian said, more than half of the firm’s bear-market signals have been triggered. 

“We are watching for signs to temper our enthusiasm on the S&P 500,” Subramanian wrote in a note on Tuesday. “And with 11 of our 19 bear market signposts having been triggered, the risk-adjusted reward of stocks appears less compelling.”

But the strategists don’t see any reason to panic now. “Note that since 1968, at least 80% of our signposts have been signaled ahead of prior market peaks,” Subramanian said.

Moreover, missing out on late stage of a bull market has historically been a costly mistake; the S&P 500 has returned 49% on average in the 24 months before every market peak since 1937.

Tesla is unlikely to meet its summer goal to start production of the Model 3, causing one analyst to downgrade the automaker’s stock to “sell.” The Grinch in this particular Christmas Party is Goldman Sachs’ David Tamberrino, which Bloomberg News cited as reducing his recommendation on the stock. Tesla shares fell 4.1 percent on Monday to about $ 246 and were trading near that level Tuesday morning.

The California-based electric-vehicle maker reiterated in its investors note last week that Model 3 vehicles would start rolling off the production line as soon as July. Tesla said it would be producing 5,000 Model 3 vehicles a week by the end of the year and will double that pace to an annualized rate of more than a half-million Model 3 vehicles by the end of 2018. Tesla shares hit a 52-week high of more than $ 287 earlier this month and have jumped 29 percent in the past year.

But that summer deadline won’t be met, wrote Tamberrino, who put a six-month price target as low as $ 185, or a 25-percent plunge. Additionally, with money-losing company SolarCity in the fold, Tesla will likely need to raise cash by year end.

Tesla has been notorious with missing deadlines, and the the Model 3 is particularly notable because of its advance interest. Within 24 hours of going on sale last spring, the Model 3 generated about 180,000 pre-orders, with each generating a $ 1,000 refundable deposit. That number has since grown to about 375,000. Unlike its Model S and Model X brethren, the five-seat Model 3 is more popularly priced, at about $ 35,000 and offers a single-charge range of 215 miles.

Although we believe this will be the ultimate verdict of 2017, we also believe it is too early. Why? Because it is not supported by interest rates. The Dollar has weakened while interest rate differentials have remained relatively stable. Miracles may exist but not in financial markets.

The Forex market is, or rather should be, driven by interest rate differentials. It is why after all we reversed our EURUSD long at 1.0815 as the differential had already turned lower.

And yet research shows the correlation between interest rate differentials and currencies is not as strong as people think. In an immediate time frame (ie rate announcement) and the long-term we all know the link is there. So what about in between? It is there but disguised by a varying time lag that seems to defy quantitative analysis. It is skewed because interest rate consideration are not always to the fore. In other words, money is flowing in and out of currencies for some other reason.

It is why, at Matrix, we employ a FITS (Fundamental, Intermarket, Technical and Sentiment) scoring system to highlight what is really driving a market. If our F rating is constantly a 4 or 5 out of 5 for the EURUSD, the correlation between the 3-month EURUSD differential and the currency pair presumably should be high. However, the Dollar has weakened in part due to recent political rhetoric from the new administration as President Trump seeks to regain a competitive advantage for the US. With such an unprecedented start to a new Presidency perhaps we should introduce a FIRST rating system instead to include an R for Rhetoric because it clearly has had an effect.

But that impact on the flow out of the Dollar has been on Sentiment and not supported yet by either a sustained US inflation undershoot or higher economic growth, inflation and interest rates elsewhere.

But sentiment can be quickly or slowly broken. It took six months the last time interest rates and the USD diverged over very bearish Chinese RMB and bullish USD sentiment. This time we expect it to be quicker

This time we expect it to be quicker than not as the correlations in the market continue to break down. This lack of cohesion is very common in the final leg of a trend which is where we believe the USD is. The structural match of the Dollar index to 2011-2013 shows why we expect this process to continue for quite a while before the USD can really reverse.

The reason for a slow turn rather than the perhaps more orthodox sharp turn is that market will remain in a vacillating limbo between ‘words’ and ‘action’. Previously the fast stream of strong expansionist rhetoric from Donald Trump served to strengthen the USD, stocks and interest rates – unsustainable in the longer term if unfunded by tax. Donald Trump surely knows that a revival in US manufacturing cannot be maintained (without exports) with a continually rising Dollar (not even mentioning NAFTA and its possible impact on the US auto sector).

So talking the USD down serves a purpose but can only be sustained with action. And the only way to weaken the USD would be concerted intervention, a revival of QE or a collapse in the US Bond market due to a runaway budget deficit. None of these are likely..yet. What is more likely is continued improvement in the US economy with the consequent fear of rising inflation and interest rates particularly if Donald Trump enacts his expansionist rhetoric. That sentiment will support the Dollar until it is broken again by political currency rhetoric.

Last week Business Insider published a condensed version of our FOMC Special. This highlighted a potential conflict later in the year between an inflationary Presidency and a Federal Reserve that seeks to counter that inflation. Until action speaks louder than words the war will be phony as indeed is the Dollar downtrend. 

So what will benefit most out of US growth and a rhetoric checked Dollar? Stocks not bonds nor the Dollar. The correlation breakdown at market turns not only exists between currencies and their interest rates but also between asset groups (stocks bonds and currencies) and amongst asset groups. In this slow USD turn, we fully expect some currencies to lead the reversal eg JPY, others to lag eg GBP, and some quite frankly to remain confused eg EURUSD. But they will all get there in the end.
