Litra Beam is a key light that has a three-way adjustable desktop stand, which should help you find the right height, tilt and rotation for your needs. Logitech notes that, by adding one or more of the lights to their setup, creators can employ various lighting techniques, such as Front, Split, Butterfly or Rembrandt.

The key light employs TrueSoft tech. According to Logitech, that helps to provide "balanced, full-spectrum LED light with cinematic color accuracy for a natural, radiant look across all skin tones." The company also claims the Litra Beam can do away with harsh shadows thanks to its frameless diffuser. Since it can run on either USB or AC power, you'll have more flexibility over where to place the device.

There are buttons on the rear, which provide a way to quickly switch between five brightness and five color temperature settings. Alternatively, you can control the Litra Beam via the Logitech G Hub desktop app. From here, you can tweak brightness by percentage value, adjust the color temperature by Kelvins, control multiple key lights at the same time and manage presets.

You might want your streams, videos and calls to sound good too. Logitech also announced a Blue Sona XLR broadcast mic. It has a built-in preamp that offers a +25dB gain boost, a dual-diaphragm capsule and supercardioid pickup pattern (designed to reduce or eliminate background noise) and a 290-degree swivel mount. It's available in graphite and off-white finishes with swappable red and graphite windscreens.

The Litra Beam, which follows the $ 60 Litra Glow light Logitech announced earlier this year, won't break the bank. It costs $ 100/£99/€119, so it's perhaps a more budget-friendly alternative to Elgato's lights. As for the Blue Sona, that will run you $ 350/£329/€349. Both products are available starting today in the US, Canada and some European countries.

One of the more useful features of Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant is the ability to create custom recordings and use them as announcements for your entire network of Alexa-enabled connected speakers. Now, Sonos is getting the feature, too: announcements are coming to Sonos One and Sonos Beam.

Creating announcements is easy; simply say “Alexa, announce” and then speak (or sing!) your announcement. Other commands like “Alexa, broadcast” and “Alexa, tell everyone” can also be used. Once you create the announcement, you’ll hear a short chime, after which the recording will play across all of your Alexa-powered household devices, now including the two Sonos devices as well. If you don’t want certain devices to get announcements, you can set it to Do Not Disturb, or turn off the feature in the Settings for each individual device via the Alexa app.

In its report to the Russian Academy of Sciences, the company asked to support its research and development, as well as experimental work to create a solid-state laser that will be able to shoot down space junk by vaporizing it with a beam.

The powerful ‘laser cannon’ will be based on a three-meter optical telescope, construction of which is already underway. The telescope, designed to monitor space for satellites and potentially dangerous space junk, will be transformed into an equally giant laser if the project is greenlighted.

A type of solid-base generator will supply power to the laser, the report, seen by RIA Novosti, says. The space trash destroyer will use the process known as “laser ablation” to remove the debris from spaceships or any other junk, like a cosmonaut’s lost glove floating in low-earth orbit, which is between 160 to 2,000 kilometers (100-1,240 miles) above the Earth’s surface. The laser’s energy heats an object that is pierced with a beam until it gradually evaporates.

NASA estimates that there are more than 500,000 pieces of space junk “the size of a marble or larger,” which can be tracked as they are travelling at speeds of up to 17,500 miles per hour around the Earth. It warns that even “a relatively small piece of orbital debris” can inflict damage upon spacecraft and satellites. Of about 500,000 pieces of space debris, 20,000 are “larger than a softball.”

With more countries engaging in space exploration, the task of avoiding collisions with the growing mass of space debris becomes ever more pressing. As the concerns mount, a number of countries have already entertained the sci-fi-like idea of creating a weird mix of a laser weapon and a garbage processor. Back in 2015, Japan’s RIKEN research laboratories said they were planning to add a small laser to a telescope they were developing for the ISS, and scale up the method if it proves to be successful.

The idea has been picked up by China. In February, scientists at the Air Force Engineering University in China published a study suggesting that the junk could be blasted by space-based lasers.

Australia’s EOS Space Systems revealed in March it is also working on the photon pressure laser. However, the laser is designed so it will not incinerate the debris completely, it will just be able “to nudge space objects around, change their orbits.” However, such approach might actually clutter space even more, as there is a chance that objects will break in two, researchers warn.

A long range of proposals, including giant nets and harpoons to grab debris, have been made by scientists over the years. In April, the RemoveDEBRIS device, equipped with a net and a harpoon, arrived at the ISS on board a Falcon 9 rocket.

In 2017, Japan failed an attempt to clear space junk with a 700-meter tether that was created with the help of a fishing company.

Solar-powered drones could one day provide 4 billion people in poorer parts of the world access to the internet, Facebook said after a “successful” test of its drone, Aquila. The internet company intends to share the blueprints for the technology.

Facebook co-founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, posted video of the drone which landed in Arizona after flying for an hour and 46 minutes over the desert. The previous test of Aquila in December resulted in a crash.

“We successfully gathered a lot of data to help us optimize Aquila’s efficiency. No one has ever built an unmanned airplane that will fly for months at a time, so we need to tune every detail to get this right,” wrote Zuckerberg on Facebook.

“When Aquila is ready, it will be a fleet of solar-powered planes that will beam internet connectivity across the world,” he added.

Facebook is developing wireless antennas to go with the drones.

This technology is far less expensive than dragging fiber and power lines out into world’s rural areas and setting up traditional antenna systems, known as base stations, according to Facebook vice president of infrastructure Jay Parikh. “We’re reinventing the concept of a base station,” he said.

The company does not plan to sell the technology, nor does it intend to operate its own drones and antennas, instead, it wants to freely share its blueprints so that many telecommunications companies can work to expand the reach of the internet, according to Wired.

More internet access means more people can access Facebook.
The company now has two billion monthly active users worldwide.
Facebook isn’t the only company working to expand the reach of the internet. Google is building its own drones as well as high-altitude balloons that can deliver internet access from the stratosphere.

Microsoft is rolling out major improvements to its Xbox One console today, and that includes a new way to share your gameplay live on the company’s video service.

Xbox One’s “Creators” update is leaving beta and bringing a number of upgrades to everyone who owns the console. This patch speeds up the system’s interface, introduces the new Guide user experience, and incorporates Beam livestreaming for the console — the Windows 10 version of the Creators update is coming April 11. I’ve already experimented with an early version of this update, and I came away impressed with the responsiveness. But since then, I’ve also played around with broadcasting gameplay to Beam. Microsoft has made that work much easier than it ever did with the Twitch app, and this could introduce a massive audience to the livestreaming service that Microsoft acquired in August.

In addition to Beam broadcasting, Xbox One is also getting an app for viewing Beam content. This will enable more people to find the broadcasters on that platform, which should help it compete with Twitch and YouTube — the dominant forces in this space. Beam has already separated itself with its ultra-low latency that almost completely eliminates the delay between when you do something in a game and when your audience sees it. Now, Microsoft is making every effort to give more people the opportunity to easily use that technology.

“This update is part of our goal to make Beam something that more people experience,” Beam partner group manager Chad Gibson told GamesBeat. “We think the ultra-low latency tech is really exciting, and so bringing Beam to more of our platforms is something that will help our service grow.”

Of course, Microsoft isn’t going to stop at bringing Beam to Xbox One. The service’s technology and integration with the Xbox One make it an ideal platform for enabling interactions between players and broadcasters. And Microsoft is intent on taking advantage of those possibilities

“This will allow games to be built where the viewing audience is taken into consideration and part of the game session itself,” said Gibson. “All of that will further push interactivity, and it’s what we’re planning to do more of.”
