I’m A Celebrity 2020 is almost upon us and now another name has been put forward, thought to be joining the long list of rumoured celebs to take on the new location of Gwyrch Castle in Wales. While the official line-up is yet to be announced, a source told The Sun that BBC journalist Victoria Derbyshire has “signed up” for the show, which is set to begin next month.

The 52-year-old is rumoured to be the fifth famous face in the highly-anticipated line-up, following the likes of Vernon Kay, Jessica Plummer and Beverley Callard.

The insider told the publication: “Victoria is always game for a challenge so when she was approached for I’m A Celebrity she jumped at the chance.

“It’s always something she’s wanted to do but because of her family she’s never wanted to fly to Australia and be away from them for so long.

“When the show moved to Wales and the opportunity came up, she didn’t want to look a gift horse in the mouth so said yes straight away.

They added: “Victoria is really looking forward to the challenges and to getting started on the show.”

The mum-of-two beat breast cancer back in 2015 and underwent a single masectomy.

At just 46-years-old she believed that she would die and even prepared her husband Mark Sandell, to raise their two sons as a single parent.

In a heartbreaking interview on BBC One special Dear NHS Superheroes, she recalled the terrifying moments and vowed to live her life to the full when she was given the all-clear.

Due to travel restrictions caused by the on-going coronavirus pandemic, the location for the ITV show has been changed to the UK this year.

The group of brave campers will be heading to the new filming location in Abergele, North Wales and many have been left wondering what bosses have in store away from the dangerous critters of the Australian jungle.

Ahead of the upcoming series, former contestants have given their verdicts on this year’s show switch up.

Corrie star Jennie McAlpine told Radio Times that she’d “much prefer” to have done the show in the UK, as she feared Australia was going to be “too hot” when she signed up.

The actress who appeared on the show in 2016, said: “That would have been ideal for me that location because I’m a red head so it was a real worry going to Australia.

“That was one of my biggest fears that it’s going to be too hot.”

Joel Dommett, who came runner up to 2016 winner Scarlett Moffat, admitted he “feels bad” for this year’s troop as they face the harsh weather conditions.

Speaking on Loose Women, he said: “When you’re in the jungle, you smell, you still have cockroaches on you from the trials, and you’re hungry, and the only saving grace is that every now and again it’s really sunny.

“It’s not going to be sunny in Wales in December!”

I’m A Celebrity will kick off next month on ITV.

“No, keep going! I love it,” Naga argued.

“Queen Victoria, having been of a certain age and having had huge amounts of children, needed to go to the loo quite often.

“And so she had little loos placed around the grounds of Osbourne House,” the journalist continued.

“So she brought along this loo seat and said: ‘I bought this when little bits of land were parcelled off and sold.

‘She crossed a line’ BBC’s Andrew Marr opens up over Emily Maitlis Cummings row https://briefnews.eu/she-crossed-a-line-bbcs-andrew-marr-opens-up-over-emily-maitlis-cummings-row/ https://briefnews.eu/she-crossed-a-line-bbcs-andrew-marr-opens-up-over-emily-maitlis-cummings-row/#respond Fri, 05 Jun 2020 04:54:25 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/she-crossed-a-line-bbcs-andrew-marr-opens-up-over-emily-maitlis-cummings-row/

In a rare appearance on ITV Good Morning Britain, BBC’s Andrew Marr told Piers Morgan the people behind the decision to find Emily Maitlis in violation of BBC‘s impartiality rules are very experienced. Asked whether he believed the Newsnight host had “crossed a line”, Mr Marr said: “Every single Sunday I sit down with my editor and go through every phrase, every adjective, every syllable that I say.

“And he asks me ‘is that absolutely fair?’ or ‘can you really justify that to everybody watching?’

“Emily is one of the great broadcasters of her generation, a really great broadcaster.

“But the BBC decided she crossed the line and the people taking that decision are very, very experienced.

“Beyond that, I’m not going to wade in. It’s been a media story that’s gone on for too long.”

The Newsnight presenter was found to have violated the BBC’s impartiality guidelines following her monologue on Dominic Cummings last week.

In her introduction to last Tuesday’s show, Maitlis said Mr Cummings had “broken the rules” when he travelled from London to Durham during lockdown and “the country can see that, and it’s shocked the Government cannot”.

The BBC said the monologue “did not meet our standards of due impartiality”.

Maitlis returned to Newsnight on Monday, but did not mention the row during a show focusing on the protests that have broken out across the US in response to the death of an unarmed black man.

MPs have aired their frustrations over the controversial lockdown trip made by the Prime Minister’s top adviser Dominic Cummings.

Following the Whitsun recess, Tuesday was the first time MPs could speak in the Commons about Mr Cummings’ trip from London to Durham, which was revealed in the press last month.

SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford called for Mr Cummings to be shown the door.

He said: “The Prime Minister has destroyed his own ‘stay home and save lives’ message.”

Mr Blackford added that Mr Cummings has “undermined efforts” to reduce the spread of coronavirus and that “people are breaking the rules as a result”.

Tory MP Craig Whittaker (Calder Valley), a former Government whip, asked if the Government’s Covid-19 strategy has been damaged by the Cummings affair.

Piers Morgan savages BBC’s Question Time lineup’s coronavirus debate – ‘absolute shocker’ https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-savages-bbcs-question-time-lineups-coronavirus-debate-absolute-shocker/ https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-savages-bbcs-question-time-lineups-coronavirus-debate-absolute-shocker/#respond Fri, 10 Apr 2020 04:12:38 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/piers-morgan-savages-bbcs-question-time-lineups-coronavirus-debate-absolute-shocker/

Fiona Bruce has been hosting a new format of the panel show in recent weeks. Guests on Question Time have been answering video questions amid the coronavirus outbreak to maintain social distancing. Tonight’s show included guests Brandon Lewis, the Northern Ireland secretary, Rachel Reeves, Shadow chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Peter Openshaw, Professor of experimental medicine at Imperial College, comedian and write Ruby Wax and Darren McGarvey, a Scottish rapper also known as Loki.

But it seems the Good Morning Britain presenter was not impressed with their debate this evening, as he savaged the show on Twitter after it aired.

He wrote: “Love Question Time but that was an absolute shocker tonight.

“Biggest crisis since WW2 & we’re served up a ranting Scottish rapper, Ruby Wax plugging her business, a scientist praising China (WTF?) and two dull politicians spouting platitudes.

“Very disappointing.“

Followers of Piers Morgan have echoed the presenter’s sentiments of the show’s lack of quality.

Steve Richards: “I’m surprised you’re surprised.

“There’s something rotten at the heart of this programme.

“A shame, it used to be great, several years ago.”

In response, Mark Holdstock asked “is anyone watching Question Time any more?”

The show also focused on the public- health sector’s status in the coronavirus pandemic.

Peter Openshaw, Professor of experimental medicine at Imperial College, commented that there wasn’t enough investment into the sector to effectively handle the virus.

He said: “It’s incredibly important to appreciate the great work of the scientists who’ve been developing testing in this country have been doing.

“They’ve been working really hard to build up from a low place because there hasn’t been enough investment in public health over the last 10 years, and the public health structure has been reorganised repeatedly.

“I think we do know now that we can get on with the testing, but it’s important that it’s really high quality…”

The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the UK reached 65,077 on Thursday.

At least 7,978 have died after contracting the virus.

Lockdown measures are likely to be extended beyond the initial three weeks to further stem chances of infection.

BBC’s Charlie Stayt shuts down Labour’s Tom Watson: ‘Why can’t you answer the question?’ https://briefnews.eu/bbcs-charlie-stayt-shuts-down-labours-tom-watson-why-cant-you-answer-the-question/ https://briefnews.eu/bbcs-charlie-stayt-shuts-down-labours-tom-watson-why-cant-you-answer-the-question/#respond Fri, 03 Jan 2020 14:39:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbcs-charlie-stayt-shuts-down-labours-tom-watson-why-cant-you-answer-the-question/

“I’ve got very great personal affection for Jeremy and I have absolutely no intention of walking back into an internal row in the Labour party and politics having just taken a life decision to leave politics after 35 years on the front line,” Mr Watson commented.

“It’s not my job anymore. I’m an ex-politician, I’m the most chilled out person you will ever meet and I’m not going to do the day-to-day stuff.”

Stayt’s co-host Sally Nugent then chipped in to ask: “Do you think that affection you have for Jeremy Corbyn that a lot of people have damaged the Labour party in the end?”

Watson replied: “He’s a very charismatic man, I think what you’re hinting at is a challenge that people liked him a great deal and could see him as the Prime Minister, but maybe some people couldn’t do that.”

BBC’s Naga Munchetty snaps at Corbyn’s ‘hypocritical’ attack on Boris’ Brexit deal https://briefnews.eu/bbcs-naga-munchetty-snaps-at-corbyns-hypocritical-attack-on-boris-brexit-deal/ https://briefnews.eu/bbcs-naga-munchetty-snaps-at-corbyns-hypocritical-attack-on-boris-brexit-deal/#respond Sat, 07 Dec 2019 13:38:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbcs-naga-munchetty-snaps-at-corbyns-hypocritical-attack-on-boris-brexit-deal/

The BBC’s Naga Munchetty criticised Jeremy Corbyn’s record on protecting the Union during what viewers described as a “car-crash” interview with Labour’s Andy McDonald, which one observer said “laid bare” the “sheer hypocrisy” of Mr Corbyn’s stance on the Union. During last night’s BBC leader debate, critics such as Tory Party chairman James Cleverly pointed out the Labour leader’s “hypocrisy” for his concern over the fate of Northern Ireland. Speaking on BBC Breakfast this morning, Munchetty grilled Mr McDonald on whether Mr Corbyn could be trusted to keep the United Kingdom together.

She said: “Let’s talk about some of the issues that were raised last night. One of them was Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal. Jeremy Corbyn says a deal has been agreed which outs border checks between Great Britain and Northern Ireland and therefore puts the union at risk.

“What is tricky is that not only has Jeremy Corbyn campaigned for a united Ireland but also said to Nicola Sturgeon he will consider an independence referendum. Does he, does the party, even value the Union?”

Mr McDonald replied: “Well absolutely and that is why we have said to the SNP in clear terms there will be no deal done on the election of a Labour Government. We will countenance that in the fullness of time but it is certainly not going to be in an early Labour Government.”

Before the debate, Jeremy Corbyn held a bombshell press conference, claiming that a leaked document showed Mr Johnson’s Brexit deal would have a “devastating” impact on Northern Ireland.

JUST IN: Nicola Sturgeon confronted by SNP’s record of failure ‘Drop your independence obsession!’

According to the Labour leader, the leaked Treasury report undermined the Prime Minister’s claim that under his Brexit deal there would be no checks on goods moving between Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

During the debate itself, Mr Corbyn said: “He spoke at a DUP conference and said there would be no trade restrictions after Brexit whatsoever, we now know there are restrictions.”

He then suggested Mr Johnson put the future of the Union at risk with such a deal.

Mr Johnson was met with applause from the audience when he responded he found it “slightly curious” to be lectured about the union by Mr Corbyn.

Mr McDonald responded: “This PM said that he would never put a border down the Irish Sea and he has done just that.”

The senior Corbyn ally then suggested that the “clamour for independence would subside” once Labour injected investment into Scotland.

Social media reacted to Munchetty’s interview with a dismal view on how Mr McDonald fared.

One user tweeted: “Andy McDonald having a complete car crash interview on #BBCBreakfast with Comrade Corbyn sheer hypocrisy on Ireland and Scotland being laid bare.”

Death in Paradise: Who will replace Ardal O’Hanlon? BBC’s HUGE hint in first glimpse photo https://briefnews.eu/death-in-paradise-who-will-replace-ardal-ohanlon-bbcs-huge-hint-in-first-glimpse-photo/ https://briefnews.eu/death-in-paradise-who-will-replace-ardal-ohanlon-bbcs-huge-hint-in-first-glimpse-photo/#respond Fri, 18 Oct 2019 13:10:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/death-in-paradise-who-will-replace-ardal-ohanlon-bbcs-huge-hint-in-first-glimpse-photo/

Death in Paradise has been a massively popular series since it first began in 2011. Now season nine is nearly in reach as viewers return to the Island of Saint Marie once more – but this time will be DI Mooney’s (played by Ardal O’Hanlon) last outing. Ahead of its return, the BBC has teased who could be replacing him with a first glimpse at the new character.

Who will replace Ardal O’Hanlon?

Since the BBC revealed Ardal O’Hanlon was leaving Death in Paradise in season nine, fans have been wondering just who could replace him.

There has been some talk Kris Marshall could return again, as well as Danny John-Jules.

However, now the BBC has released a first look at the new character in a brand new image.

While his face and name are not revealed in the teaser, there are some clues to who he could be.

READ MORE: Death in Paradise: Why is Ardal O’Hanlon leaving Death in Paradise?

The first reveal is the new DI will be another man so it seems the series will be following the same pattern as previous replacements, which has seen a number of great British actors take on the role of the police inspector.

The only other hints about the new character can be seen from his backpack, which shows he’s got suncream packed away – could this mean another fish out of water on the Caribbean island?

Fans will remember that in the past, nearly all of the incoming DIs have struggled to deal with the heat of the island.

Along with the release of the image, the BBC also revealed viewers will not have to wait until the series airs in order to find out who the new DI is.

In fact, it will be revealed ahead of time – but no information has been revealed about when viewers will found out yet.

Although while the new actor may be revealed soon, the ins and outs of how Mooney is set to leave the island will only be revealed when the season returns.

The news O’Hanlon was leaving was announced earlier this month when he revealed he was going on to pursue new acting challenges.

In a statement, he said: “I’ve spent the last four summers in Guadeloupe playing DI Jack Mooney (solving over 20 murder cases in my time there!).”

He added: “It’s been a hugely rewarding and unforgettable experience, working with incredibly talented actors, directors and crew while discovering a magical part of the world.

“However, it’s time to move on and explore other opportunities – preferably nearer the Arctic Circle.

“I’m confident that Death in Paradise will go from strength to strength and viewers will share my enthusiasm for Jack’s successor.”

In the statement it was also revealed O’Hanlon will be leaving the show mid-way through the ninth series.

The latest outing will return to the island of Saint Marie as the police officers investigate a new spate of bizarre crimes.

Ahead of its return, the BBC has also revealed a little bit about what could happen in the new season.

This includes actor Aude Legastelois being promoted to a full-time cast member of the series with her character DS Madeleine Dumas.

The synopsis said: “Series nine will see the Honoré Police team get to know their new DS, Madeleine, while a surprise kiss catches Jack off guard…”

Joining Dumas in returning once again will be Tobi Bakare as Officer JP Hooper, Shyko Amos as Officer Ruby Patterson and Don Warrington as Commissioner Selwyn Patterson.

Death in Paradise season 9 returns to the BBC in January 2020.

BBC’s Dan Walker probes MP Jess Phillips over tone – ‘Sometimes I should behave better’ https://briefnews.eu/bbcs-dan-walker-probes-mp-jess-phillips-over-tone-sometimes-i-should-behave-better/ https://briefnews.eu/bbcs-dan-walker-probes-mp-jess-phillips-over-tone-sometimes-i-should-behave-better/#respond Mon, 30 Sep 2019 12:29:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbcs-dan-walker-probes-mp-jess-phillips-over-tone-sometimes-i-should-behave-better/

Labour MP Jess Phillips spoke to BBC News reporters Dan Walker and Louise Minchin about shouting in parliament, telling the presenters she believes she could “behave myself better” but parliament is “theatre” and she’ll continue to heckle and shout like her peers.

After chatting about contributors for her book Truth to Power: 7 Ways to Call Time on B.S, Dan veered the conversation to the tone and use of language in parliament surrounding Brexit talks.

Dan began: “I just want to go back to something else that happened in parliament recently because a lot of talk last week about some of the language used, we’ve already talked about.

“But the noise and the shouting and the screaming. I’m sure you saw the woman in the Equalities Committee Chair Maria Miller saying you were actually the one making the loudest noise.”

“I do shout in Parliament, I’m not going to pretend I don’t heckle just like everybody else. I suppose..,” Jess responded.

“Things aren’t going to change quickly but do you think it’s going to continue in that vein?”

“I hope it won’t,” Jess commented. “I think that the following day, when I asked an urgent question specifically about the tone and use of language of the Prime Minister, it was much calmer and I think people realise there is a need for calm.

“But this debate will be had in 10 years time, 20 years time, do politicians behave badly?

“It has always been thus, I mean it’s a bit like a public school isn’t it? The whole place the whole demeanour, it doesn’t necessarily lend itself to consensus and conversation.

“But the reality is, in all the rooms in parliament, that is what goes on.”

Louise chipped in to ask: “So you admit you were loud? So quietness can’t change it? In your book you talk about how to make change so how are you going to help change?”

“I mean for me as an individual to change centuries of tradition in parliament will be difficult,” Jess remarked. “But I will definitely temper my behaviour. There’a absolutely no two ways about it and I can admit it, I just wish Boris Johnson would.”

Farage grilled by BBC’s Jon Kay over ‘dangerous’ statement on ‘political’ Supreme Court https://briefnews.eu/farage-grilled-by-bbcs-jon-kay-over-dangerous-statement-on-political-supreme-court/ https://briefnews.eu/farage-grilled-by-bbcs-jon-kay-over-dangerous-statement-on-political-supreme-court/#respond Wed, 25 Sep 2019 22:12:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/farage-grilled-by-bbcs-jon-kay-over-dangerous-statement-on-political-supreme-court/

The Supreme Court president Lady Hale announced that the Court declared the suspension of Parliament under the Prime Minister as unlawful. As a result, Nigel Farage was interviewed on BBC Breakfast where he gave his opinion on the judgement and the Court to Kay.

Farage began: “For right or wrong we now have a Supreme Court, Tony Blair set it up. It is a political court and it’s made a very political judgement.”

He then went on to speak about the Prime Minister, stating it was a “matter of honour” for him to offer up his resignation to Parliament.

“If the highest court in the land says that you’ve acted unlawfully in your advice to the Queen I think as a matter of honour you have to at least offer your resignation to the House of Commons and ask them to vote on it,” he said.

Farage went on: “The political decision to call a Queen’s speech, while in most years would be a normal thing to do, has had the catastrophic effect in uniting the retainers and uniting the establishment.

“It’s allowed those who have spent three years trying to stop Brexit from happening now claiming they’ve got democracy on their side.

“Whichever way you look at this politically, it’s an appalling decision.”

But Kay was keen to address Farage’s earlier comment that the Supreme Court is a “political” one.

“I have to pick up on what you said right at the beginning there, that this is a political court. That is rated by some people as a dangerous thing to say, an irresponsible thing to say.

“I think over the months and the years that go by from now we have to decide can we have a Supreme Court acting in this way without having a written constitution but that’s a debate for later on.

“I don’t think at this stage there is any point in anybody questioning the judgement, it is what it is.”

Kay also pressed Farage over what the decision meant for Brexit and his vision of it.

do you think No Deal is now off the table, 31st October now not going to happen?” Kay probed.

Farage responded: “We have a Parliament made up of people who want to stop Brexit from happening and conservative party who pretend they want Brexit but actually over half the MPs sitting in Westminster for the Tories don’t really want Brexit to happen.

“We need a General Election, we need the public to express their will and what’s really interesting is the gap between people’s opinions on Brexit and Parliament’s opinion has got even wider.

“We will not get Brexit, certainly not a meaningful Brexit, without a General Election and without real political change.”

BBC’s Steph McGovern stunned as Grant Shapps shuts down her ‘huge backlash’ claim in spat https://briefnews.eu/bbcs-steph-mcgovern-stunned-as-grant-shapps-shuts-down-her-huge-backlash-claim-in-spat/ https://briefnews.eu/bbcs-steph-mcgovern-stunned-as-grant-shapps-shuts-down-her-huge-backlash-claim-in-spat/#respond Fri, 30 Aug 2019 14:09:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbcs-steph-mcgovern-stunned-as-grant-shapps-shuts-down-her-huge-backlash-claim-in-spat/

BBC host Steph McGovern clashed in a heated debate with Conservative Transport Secretary Grant Shapps in an explosive Brexit row. The presenter pressed the Tory MP for Welwyn Hatfield over the “backlash” the Prime Minister has seen since announcing he will prorogue Parliament ahead of the Queen’s Speech on October 14, which will effectively limit the time MPs have to try to block a no deal Brexit. Mr Shapps quickly hit back at MPs “getting excited” over the announcement from the Prime Minister earlier this week.

The BBC host said: “Mr Shapps there has been a huge backlash to this. You are painting a picture that this is very normal. But, there has been a huge backlash and amongst some of your MPs as well.

“This is at a time when we need to get agreement between people, not division, isn’t it?”

The Tory MP quickly replied: “I tell you what isn’t normal, it is not normal to think it’s okay not to have legislation to pass. You can’t have legislation to pass unless you have a new Queen’s Speech.

“What’s not normal is we haven’t had a new Queen’s Speech and this is correcting that with a Government that has got a very busy domestic agenda to do with 20,000 more police to clamp down on serious crime.

“Putting more money into the NHS, making sure we level up school spending, so all the pupils are getting the right amount of money.

READ MORE: Blackford dismantled by John Humphrys as he brands Boris ‘dictator’

“So, there is a big domestic agenda. Which you cannot do unless you are able to set that out in a Queen’s Speech.

“It is perfectly normal, I know people are getting extremely excited about it. But, actually, those four days in October, to get ready for the new Queen’s Speech, seems perfectly rational to me.”

He added: “And then there is plenty of time around that European Summit, both before and after to debate whatever new has, I hope, come out from this stepped-up effort by the EU and our diplomats to try to find a negotiated settlement.

“But, all of that against the backdrop of the announcement I am actually making today and to speak about which is preparing the ports readiness and the infrastructure readiness.”

The Prime Minister refused to accept that he was limiting MPs time to debate Brexit as a result of the decision to suspend Parliament ahead of the Queen’s Speech on October 14.

Mr Johnson said: “There will be ample time on both sides of that crucial October 17 Summit in Parliament for MPs to debate the EU, Brexit and all the other issues.”

The move from the Government came after opposition parties met at the start of this week and said they would do everything in their power to try to block a no deal exit from the Brussels bloc.

Campaigners against a no deal Brexit accused the Prime Minister of “trashing the constitution” after the Government’s plans to prorogue Parliament in the lead-up to the October 31 Brexit deadline.

Defending the decision on Thursday morning, Leader of the House, Jacob Rees-Mogg said: “I think the outrage is phoney and it is created by people who don’t want us to leave the European Union and are trying very hard to overturn the referendum result and don’t want the benefits of leaving the European Union.”

He added: “Parliament wasn’t going to be sitting for most of this time anyway. This is completely constitutional and proper.”

Speaking on Sky News, shadow chancellor John McDonnell outlined the next steps for Labour. He said: “The position we are in at the moment is looking at a legislative intervention next week.

“We will focus on that, and what we will do and Jeremy Corbyn brought all the opposition leaders together, it was an incredibly productive and positive meeting and we have all agreed on the strategy we are pursuing and that is what we will hold to.”

Former Conservative frontbencher David Gauke warned next week will be the last chance for MPs to maintain “some control” over the Brexit process before a potential no deal exit.

He said: “It does look like next week is essentially the only opportunity that Parliament will have to maintain some control over this process and ensure that it has a say before we leave without a deal.”

Tory rebel and former minister Sir Oliver Letwin, a leading opponent of a no deal Brexit, said he had been speaking to Commons Speaker John Bercow to establish “what the procedures are”.

He told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “There is no question of any MP cooking up a deal with the Speaker – you can’t do that, the Speaker has to follow the rules.

“It’s perfectly true that I, for many months, have been talking to the clerks and to the Speaker, and that’s the appropriate thing for MPs to do if they want to establish what the procedures are. The action here is on the part of MPs, not on the part of the Speaker.”

He added: “I, of course, would like to see the prorogation not happen because I don’t think the prorogation is a proper proceeding. But, whether it is lawful or not, we will find out in the courts. That’s not for MPs to decide.

“What I have been concerned with and will continue to be concerned with is the question of how, in the remaining time if we are prorogued, we can ensure that Britain doesn’t make a sudden, disorderly, undemocratic no-deal exit on October 31.”

Shadow attorney-general Baroness Chakrabarti said she believed opponents of Boris Johnson had the numbers in Parliament to force through a change in the law to block a no deal.
