Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, 70, had a day out without her husband Prince Charles, 69, today.

The royal met the lucky children who won BBC2’s 500 Words creative writing competition, with the final held in Hampton Court Palace today.

With the sunshine tentatively peeking through in London, Camilla chose a summery white dress.

A simple shift dress, her choice flattered her figure and looked cool and crisp.

Three-quarter length sleeves allowed her to show off some delicate jewellery. Camilla wore two fine gold bracelets on her arm, with her huge engagement ring thinking in the sunshine.

A pair of pearl earrings and a silver bead necklace completed the look.

Camilla stuck to her usual blowdried hairstyle and classic makeup.

The royal was seen driving out of Hampton Court Palace in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, the classic car from the favourite children’s film & book.

Sat next to her in the car was radio and TV presenter Chris Evans, and the children who won the BBC2 competition.

All of the group smiled and waved to the assembled crowds and photographers.

At one point they were joined by author and Britain’s Got Talent favourite David Walliams, who hung on to the edge of the car.

Camilla has been busy this week, and was in Cornwall yesterday with Prince Charles for the Royal Cornwall Show.

Despite the chill in the air, Camilla opted for summer colours, wearing a pale pink summer coat.

The coat, which she wore closed at first, was collarless and featured an embroidered trim on the edges.

She pinned a small brooch to one shoulder. Underneath the coat, Camilla was wearing a dress in the same colour. It also had a black floral design.

She also stepped out with the Queen on Wednesday and attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace earlier this week.

For her day with the Queen, the Duchess of Cornwall wore a black skirt with a large white spotty print.

She added a white blazer, taking style tips from the Queen herself. Camilla added white court shoes with a black toe and her everyday pearl and diamond earrings.

For the garden party, Camilla wore a more formal choice, with an extravagant hat to complete the look.

Her powder-blue ensemble was glowing, with the Duchess opting for an elegant dress coat with pocket and shoulder detailing.

Top of the Lake: China Girl review – BBC2 drama is a real treat https://briefnews.eu/top-of-the-lake-china-girl-review-bbc2-drama-is-a-real-treat/ https://briefnews.eu/top-of-the-lake-china-girl-review-bbc2-drama-is-a-real-treat/#respond Fri, 04 Aug 2017 04:46:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/top-of-the-lake-china-girl-review-bbc2-drama-is-a-real-treat/

Mindful of the need to compete with the likes of Netflix and Amazon Prime, the whole series has been on the iPlayer since the first episode was broadcast but equally mindful of the need to review it I exercised some selfcontrol and waited to see it the more traditional way.

And aside from a few carps, this is shaping up to be an absolute treat.

As expected, the dead woman in the suitcase at the bottom of the sea is almost certainly the missing prostitute Cinnamon and she’s pregnant to boot.

This gave the BBC’s make-up department the chance to do their stuff as the bloodied and battered corpse was studied from all angles; however she met her end, someone had clearly had it in for her.

Elsewhere, Robin (Elisabeth Moss) finally met her daughter Mary (Alice Englert) in a surprisingly touching scene – “I believe we share the same gene pool” – but how long before she finds out that Mary’s intended is almost certainly involved with Cinnamon’s sad end?

And so to the carps, beginning with that one: it’s a major coincidence that just as Robin decides to track down her long-lost daughter, said daughter happens to be involved with the prime suspect of a murder Robin’s investigating, even if he hasn’t been identified as such yet.

And secondly, are all the men in Australia as unremittingly ghastly as they’re portrayed here?

There are the sexist chauvinist police officers and the group of truly hideous specimens who visit prostitutes and compare notes.

Of their number, only one comes across as a halfway-decent human being and it is he who suspects something has happened to his beloved Cinnamon; the others wouldn’t look out of place in a freak show.

And of the rest of the men, only the gay character and the cuckold don’t make you want to run screaming from the room. But really, these are small gripes.

From the opening shot, we learned that Robin called off her wedding when she discovered her fiancé had been busted for drugs while in the company of another woman: the subsequent burning of her wedding dress with the charred remnants floating off into the distance signified a total disillusionment and loss of hope.

The scenes in the brothels were splendidly horrible, while the unexpected comic relief is turning out to be Robin’s giant sidekick Miranda (Gwendoline Christie), who divulged that she, too, had been asked to be a sex worker as men were curious about her size.

And honourable mention must go to Nicole Kidman, who must also have had the prosthetics people working overtime, with her spots and facial sproutings.

Really sensational, superior stuff. This week’s subject of WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE(BBC1) was Emma Willis, the presenter of Big Brother and The Voice.

Is this format beginning to run out of steam?

I’ve enjoyed it in the past but this goggle-eyed wonder as history opens up is getting a little clichéd, while it’s become de rigeur to voice 21st-century horror when confronted with past misdeeds.

Jeremy Paxman sobbing on discovering the poverty some relatives endured a few years back was riveting, but this?

Time perhaps to give the show a much-needed break.

Top Of The Lake: China Girl review: BBC2 show has gritty drama in the bag https://briefnews.eu/top-of-the-lake-china-girl-review-bbc2-show-has-gritty-drama-in-the-bag/ https://briefnews.eu/top-of-the-lake-china-girl-review-bbc2-show-has-gritty-drama-in-the-bag/#respond Fri, 28 Jul 2017 01:40:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/top-of-the-lake-china-girl-review-bbc2-show-has-gritty-drama-in-the-bag/

The BBC stepped up to the mark last night: deploying some stellar cinematic names including writer and director Jane Campion (The Piano) and an almost unrecognisable Nicole Kidman.

TOP OF THE LAKE: CHINA GIRL (BBC2) is a very superior thriller indeed.

The series returns to the tale of Detective Robin Griffin (Elisabeth Moss) four years after the original series.

Starting a new life in Sydney, far away from the horrors of the previous series which took place in New Zealand, life is a bit of a bummer.

She is held in ill-disguised contempt by the men in the police force, while her own brother asks her to move out of his flat on the grounds that he doesn’t really want her there (or something like that.)

Elsewhere her biological daughter Mary (Alice Englert, Jane Campion’s real-life daughter), living with adopted and estranged parents, one being the aforementioned Nicole, brings her much older boyfriend Alexander “Puss” Braun (David Dencik) home for dinner.

Puss is a language teacher but in a very darkly comic scene we see him giving a class.

His students are actually prostitutes and he’s teaching them how to talk to the punter, not how to ask directions to a nearby caff.

And that is the crux of the matter for what is really at issue here is people smuggling, prostitution and the very dark underbelly of Sydney.

Campion’s cinematic credentials were showcased in full in the opening scene, which was straight out of a film noir: three people in a kitchen, silently eating bowls of soup, with only the clink of spoon against dish to be heard.

In the corner of the room there is a suitcase and there’s never much doubt about what is in that suitcase. The scene is taking place in a brothel.

The madam and an accomplice are soon hauling that suitcase to the ocean, where they pitch it in; Meanwhile one of the prostitutes has gone missing.

No prizes for guessing where the body has ended up. This was superior storytelling.

The menace of the brothel contrasted with Robin’s abject misery in just about every area of life, which in turn was at odds with the middle class intellectual aura of the house in which Mary was living.

Those three worlds are about to collide: the final scene saw Robin bending over the suitcase, which had now washed ashore.

There was some anxiety about whether this new series would match up to the last: it did. In spades. A month on and the horror of the Grenfell Tower fire still continues.

I live about a mile and a half from the building and it is truly shocking when you see the burnt out shell.

It featured in INSIDE THE LONDON FIRE BRIGADE (ITV), a documentary that followed the capital’s firefighters for a year.

There were first hand accounts of the terror that took place that night, alongside other incidents including another block of flats destroyed by an explosion, a coach that caught fire on Westminster Bridge and a basement fire on Bonfire Night.

It was a timely reminder of the incredible bravery involved. There are still a few heroes around.

King Charles III: When is King Charles III on BBC2? Air date, start time, trailer, cast https://briefnews.eu/king-charles-iii-when-is-king-charles-iii-on-bbc2-air-date-start-time-trailer-cast/ https://briefnews.eu/king-charles-iii-when-is-king-charles-iii-on-bbc2-air-date-start-time-trailer-cast/#respond Tue, 09 May 2017 14:46:59 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/king-charles-iii-when-is-king-charles-iii-on-bbc2-air-date-start-time-trailer-cast/

What time is King Charles III on BBC2?

The royal drama will air on BBC2 at 9pm tomorrow, Wednesday May 10, and will be made available to watch online on iPlayer immediately afterwards.

Is King Charles III a series? Will there be more episodes?

King Charles III is a one-off ‘future history’ drama based on Mike Bartlett’s Olivier Award-winning play of the same name.

It is set immediately after the death of the , and follows as he ascends to the throne.

The BBC has teased: “Charles has waited a lifetime to ascend to the throne, but when he finally does he finds himself wrestling his conscience over a bill to sign into law.

“His hesitation detonates a constitutional and political crisis and divides his family, with and Kate realising his actions may threaten their future.”

Meanwhile, begins a new relationship with a republican who becomes embroiled in a sex scandal.

The play and its adaptation includes a controversial scene in which the ghost of appears to both Charles and William.

The late Tim Pigott-Smith, who played Charles, said that he found the “hyper-sensitive” scene “incredibly painful” to film, “just because that whole incident was so terrible”.

“I don’t think it is presumptuous of us to do it or wrong of us to do it,” Smith told The Times in his last interview before his sudden death on April 7.

“For Charles or William or Harry it would be agonising to watch. That upsets me. But I don’t think we’ve done anything unreasonable or cruel.”

Who is in the cast of King Charles III?

The BBC adaptation features many of the same cast members as the original play, with a few new additions.

Tim Pigott-Smith as King Charles

Tim Pigott-Smith reprises the title role, having also played Charles in the original theatre production, which was written in poetic blank verse.

The veteran actor said that the biggest challenge in translating the play from stage to screen was its use of “big language”.

“I was concerned about whether the soliloquies would be intact as they were very important in the play and Charles had several.

“I was also concerned about whether the humour would come across on TV. But Mike’s done a really good job of moving it from being a Shakespearean style history play to a modern film but yet still keeping the incredible verse and language.

“I think we’ve managed to capture the essence of what we did on stage and bring it to the camera.”

Charlotte Riley as Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge

Charlotte Riley is one of the few cast members who did not appear in the original play, which she said she used to her advantage when approaching her portrayal of the .

“I was talking to a friend about how nervous I felt as I was an outsider, and she said to use it for the character as that was the situation that Kate was in when she joined the family and I’m joining theirs,” she said.

“I don’t know what her experience was but I was told it was a good experience and that she was taken under their wing which is how I’ve felt with these guys. They have all taken the time to welcome me into the fold so I was lucky really.”

Riley said that her character differs from the real-life Kate, and is “pragmatic and forward with her opinions”.

“She wants to move things forward for the Royal Family,” she explained. “She encourages William to become the man she knows he can be, leading from the front. She’s almost like the CEO of a business.”

Oliver Chris as Prince William

Oliver Chris starred opposite Smith in both the London and New York productions of King Charles III, returning once more for the BBC edition.

The actor said that he had “goosebumps” when he first read the TV script.

“I don’t know if that’s because I’d never read a script like it before or because it was so amazing to see this play that we worked on for so long, so different yet so identical,” he said.

“Seeing it elevated into a new art form was an extraordinary thing.”

Chris’s version of William “is a very dutiful member of the Royal Family – he’s been indoctrinated to his role and his duty to his father and his family. There is a way of behaving and being that he feels duty bound to embody”.

“As the country begins to spiral slowly into chaos, and ultimately disaster, he has to face reality that he has to do something about it,” he teased. “He is going to have to take a big step with the help of his wife.”

Richard Goulding as Prince Harry

Richard Goulding once again plays Prince Harry, who he says is “struggling and in turmoil” in the show.

“Without giving too much away, he starts off in a place where he doesn’t know who he is or what his role is,” he said.

“He doesn’t want to engage with what he needs to do as a Prince and meets a girl that isn’t the sort of girl that he ought to be with, at least in the eyes of the public and his family.

“It takes him on a journey of discovery of what life could be like if he didn’t have his duties.”

BBC2 Obesity programme DIVIDES viewers on NHS weight loss surgery prejudice https://briefnews.eu/bbc2-obesity-programme-divides-viewers-on-nhs-weight-loss-surgery-prejudice/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc2-obesity-programme-divides-viewers-on-nhs-weight-loss-surgery-prejudice/#respond Tue, 11 Apr 2017 22:27:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbc2-obesity-programme-divides-viewers-on-nhs-weight-loss-surgery-prejudice/

The BBC TV programme was hosted by Professor Rachel Batterham, research scientist and head of obesity services at University College Hospital.

Rachel questioned the current NHS system for treating obesity, arguing weight loss surgery is an exceptionally effective tool that’s being under-utilised.

The doctor said: “As a health community we are tending to ignore this as a problem. This isn’t difficult on an individual level, this is difficult on a global level.”

There are 14.5 million people suffering from obesity in the UK. That figure is expected to soar by 11 million by 2030.

Yet bariatric surgery has declined of the past few years on the NHS and one of the doctors Rachel spoke to said he thinks prejudice against obese people might be to blame.

He explained: “We probably do 350 cases a year. A few years ago we were probably doing about 600 cases a year. In the last five years there has been quite a significant drop in the number of cases we’re doing.

“It may be that there’s a bit of prejudice out there. People think its worthwhile but maybe not deserved.

“This is surgery to improve health, this isn’t surgery to lose weight and if we can get those messages across we’ll start to see our numbers increase again and we’ll see that prejudice eroded.”

Rachel spoke to many patients on the programme who had tried to access weight loss surgery on the NHS but failed, due to funding, eligibility or location.

The doctor believes even the medical community is lacking knowledge about the health benefits of the operation, which can send Type 2 diabetes into remission immediately and take patients straight off their various vital medications.

Rachel said: “Immediately after surgery the hormones coming from the gut that are present in the blood completely change. These hormones act directly on the brain to control how hungry a person feels, which changes what sort of food the person would crave for.

“There’s a lack of understanding of the health benefits and a complete lack of understanding about how the surgery actually works.”

But the programme’s strong views about the benefits of weight loss surgery for the NHS and the whole of the UK were not shared by the entire audience.

Some viewers took to Twitter to vent their frustration, with one writing: “This @BBCTwo #nhs #obesity programme is making me angry. Diet and exercise is the key, not tax payers money for surgery.”

Another person tweeted: “I have been a trainer and studied nutrition. The majority (not all) of these people should be prescribed a nutritionist not an op [operation].”

While many disagreed with the views of the obesity programme, there were still plenty of supporters of the message.

One viewer tweeted: “It makes me angry that so many people think #Obesity is a choice. It’s not easy to lose that much weight. There’s a mental health aspect too.”

Another shared: “Obesity documentary really showing that in some cases it really does echo mental issues seen in other eating disorders #nhs.”

One person wrote: “At Last! A nonjudgemental view of obesity, and a supportive view of bariatric surgery. Well done Prof Rachel Batterham.”

Weight loss surgery currently costs between £7,000-£10,000 but centralised funding is about to be localised, which will change the entire system on the NHS.

Obesity costs the NHS £5.1 billion each year, which is expected to more than double by 2030.
