Five speech therapists in Hong Kong were found guilty of sedition on Wednesday for publishing three picture books depicting sheep defending their home from wolves.
The therapists may face up to two years in prison under a colonial-era British law against seditious offenses, which the city's authorities have recently revived to use in tandem with a sweeping new national security law.
Prosecutors said the evil wolves in the books were an allusion to the mainland Chinese authorities while the kind sheep represented Hong Kong residents, according to a judgment published by the courts.
The five defended themselves by saying the books are fables meant to teach universally-celebrated virtues and are open to interpretation, per the court judgment.

However, District Judge Wai Kin Kwok ruled that the books were seditious "not merely from the words, but from the words with the proscribed effects intended to result in the mind of children."
In one of the books, a "Wolf-Chairman" directed another wolf to masquerade as a sheep in an attempt to occupy the sheep village and eat those inside, Kwok wrote in a summary, per court records.
Kwok described the disguised wolf as an analogy for the Beijing-backed Chief Executive of Hong Kong, which he wrote would lead children to view the city's real-life leader with contempt.
Another book, titled "12 Warriors of Sheep Village," appears to reference the 12 Hong Kong protestors who were caught trying to flee to Taiwan by sea in 2020. The book tells the story of 12 sheep who fled their village in a boat but were later captured and brought to be imprisoned in a wolf-run fortress.
Kwok wrote that children who read the book would be "led to believe that the 12 fugitives are victims of oppression and unfair prosecution."
The third book involved a story that Kwok said would lead children to believe Beijing had allowed people coming from mainland China to "make their home dirty and spread the pandemic."
The five defendants — Lai Man-Ling, Melody Yeung, Sidney Ng, Samuel Chan, and Fong Tsz-Ho — have been detained since July last year and were denied bail. All five are below the age of 30 and are due to be sentenced on Saturday.

Human Rights Watch on Wednesday called for the sedition convictions to be reversed.
"Hong Kong people used to read about the absurd prosecution of people in mainland China for writing political allegories, but this is now happening in Hong Kong," said Maya Wang, a senior Chinese researcher for the non-profit group.
"Hong Kong authorities should reverse this dramatic decline in freedoms and quash the convictions of the five children's book authors," she added.
"Concerned governments should speak out against Hong Kong's abuse of the sedition law," Human Rights Watch wrote in a release, urging the governments of Australia, the European Union, and the UK to join the US in imposing sanctions on Hong Kong officials stamping out dissent.

]]>Abrahams notes how she used to live hand to mouth. “But now I’ve got a savings account, which I haven’t ever touched.” The sacrifice? “I eat less chocolate now.”
Paulse and Abrahams are just two of thousands of beneficiaries of the Poverty Stoplight, a self-evaluation tool that’s now redefining poverty in countries as diverse as Argentina and the U.K.; Mexico and Tanzania; Chile and Papua New Guinea. By getting families to rank their own economic condition red, yellow or green based upon 50 indicators, the Poverty Stoplight gives families the agency to pull themselves out of poverty and offers organizations insight into whether their programs are working.
Social entrepreneur Martín Burt, who founded Fundación Paraguaya 33 years ago to promote entrepreneurship and economic empowerment in Paraguay, developed the first, paper-based prototype of the Poverty Stoplight in 2010 to help the organization’s microfinance clients escape the poverty cycle.
Instead of aggregating data for decision-makers at the top, we do it for decision-makers at the bottom.
Martín Burt, developer of Poverty Stoplight
In recent years, the tool — which remains fundamentally unchanged — has started to spread across the globe with a presence in about 30 countries. The Argentina hub — launched by Eleonora Antar of Fundación Irradia in 2016 — has thus far supplied the tool to 25 Argentine rural and urban nongovernmental organizations by more effectively mapping needs, she says. South Africa’s Poverty Stoplight version already has 52 partner organizations. And in 2017, the U.N. highlighted the tool as one of 11 solutions advancing that organization’s Sustainable Development Goals. In every country, the Poverty Stoplight maintains its fundamental difference from other poverty reduction efforts. Its results aren’t targeted at policymakers (although they can be invaluable to them). Instead, it’s a self-help tool that serves socioeconomically vulnerable communities and the organizations working with them.
“Instead of aggregating data for decision-makers at the top, we do it for decision-makers at the bottom,” says Burt.

Because poverty is multidimensional, “you can have a family with a proper toilet but no savings,” points out Burt. Determining questionnaires span six different aspects of people’s lives, including softer indicators such as community involvement, self-confidence and family violence. The survey, a series of 50 multiple-choice questions with visual cues, is aimed at households, not individuals, because “you cannot get a 10-year-old girl out of poverty in isolation,” says Burt. Confidentiality is another critical component.
Administering the survey on paper is tough, and Burt experienced a “mutiny” from his facilitators soon after starting out. He got pro bono assistance from Hewlett-Packard to digitize the tool. This allowed him to share the Poverty Stoplight with others around the world — among them Tracey Chambers from The Clothing Bank (TCB) in South Africa. She, in turn, introduced it to Laura Bergh, an innovator who, in close conjunction with TCB, pioneered a membership model for South Africa through which partners agree to share data with one another to ensure that mistakes are not repeated. “We recognized the incredible opportunity to create a community of sharing where organizations leapfrogged off each other’s learnings,” says Bergh.
One such organization is Food Lover’s Market (FLM), the supermarket chain where Paulse and Abrahams work. After rebranding the tool “Love My Journey” — because “it sounds more positive,” says the chain’s corporate and social investment facilitator Kate Marais — the group has surveyed more than 1,000 employees in all nine of South Africa’s provinces. Marais observes that budgeting and saving are nationwide problems, but apart from that, “every province is different.”
During her hourlong, one-on-one interview with Marais, Paulse opened up about her problems in a way she’d never done before. She had joined FLM in 2013, after “getting sober” but still “didn’t know how to get ahead.” When she did the survey she “thought [she] wanted a new, bigger flat,” but now she’s “accepted [her] reality” and made her current flat more comfortable by building a bunk bed, among other things. Her scorecard of reds, greens and ambers also showed her that she didn’t spend enough time on herself. She’s since managed to change her work schedule so she can go to church on Sundays and Wednesdays.

In more than 500 interviews, Marais has not once been asked for a raise, but she can see why some corporations may shy away from using the tool. There’s a “risk to business if you don’t follow up on the information, but we have the full support of our board.” All FLM employees are encouraged to take the Me and My Money course — a two-day financial literacy course in which participants are shown how to reduce debt and build savings — while other follow-up programs and interventions vary from region to region.
Inspired by the success of the South African movement, the Poverty Stoplight now has 11 national hubs (and a limited presence in about 20 other countries) that adapt the tool for local conditions. Only in New Orleans is a lack of flood insurance a poverty indicator, for instance. Like a social franchise, the hubs make it their business to seek out local partners. Burt hopes to have fully operational hubs in 50 countries in the next five years.
Antar in Argentina says that while it’s impossible to assess the impact until follow-up surveys have been completed, preliminary feedback suggests the tool has been “revolutionary.” While Argentina is focusing on nongovernmental organizations, hubs in Chile and Mexico have elected to strengthen the private sector. South Africa’s Poverty Stoplight has done a bit of both but has yet to get any government clients. “Maybe they’re scared?” Bergh wonders. “The Poverty Stoplight will show whether or not your programs are working.”
For the Poverty Stoplight to make a significant dent in global poverty it will need all hands on deck. That’s why Burt is actively pursuing international accreditation. The U.N. recognition is great, but Burt would “love to get the World Bank to persuade governments to attack poverty from the bottom up.” Till now, governments and economists have been wary of the way the tool blends qualitative and quantitative indicators, but this — both Burt and Bergh say — is its greatest strength.
While the tool is a revolutionary yardstick, it cannot eliminate poverty on its own. Aware of the dangers of the tool being used for diagnosis alone, Bergh insists that all South Africa partners have follow-up programs that touch on at least two of the indicators (she has turned organizations away). Burt is pioneering gamification strategies. In one called “My Happy Smile,” families compete to fix their dental problems.
Of course, only one family can win the competition. But inspiring people to use the tool to fix their own problems, Burt calculates, makes everyone a winner.

Three consecutive losses have shunted the Redbacks to fifth spot and on track to face fourth placed Queensland in a qualifying final next Thursday in Sydney.
The equation is simple for Jamie Siddons’ men — fire against Victoria then win three consecutive finals to clinch the title.
“If we finish sixth that is OK but we need to win some finals. That’s all it is, three wins but we have to stop talking about it and do it,” said Richardson.
The changes to the JLT Cup format will, to a perverse degree, reward sides yet to collectively ignite.
“The weird thing we would be cooked any other year,” conceded Australian one-day paceman Richardson.
“The chat we have is to learn from what we are doing wrong and get it right when it matters and win the competition from down the ladder.”
The only consolation in South Australia watching Western Australian opener D’Arcy Short (257) smash a record breaking double-ton against Queensland or Tasmania’s Ben McDermott post dual centuries this tournament is they will have to replicate that magic in the finals.
The Redbacks have lacked middle-order partnerships required to arm their impressive attack with defendable totals. There has been a reliance on Jake Weatherald averaging 63 while its solitary win came courtesy of the opener’s unconquered 106 against bottom-ranked New South Wales in the tournament opener.
“Jake Weatherald is a perfect example, when he gets off to a good start there is someone to bat around but it can’t be him every time,” said Richardson, who took 2/46 in South Australia’s three wicket loss to Tasmania on Thursday at Bankstown Oval.
“In the middle order we are just missing that bloke to bat through to the 45th over and put the foot down. It’s another opportunity on Sunday.”
Masterful strokeplay from openers Weatherald and Alex Carey delivered Adelaide Strikers inaugural title last season and Richardson says that big game experience will be vital in the JLT Cup finals.
“If we can find a way to switch it on for the big moments in the finals we should be all right,” said Richardson, with SA a chance to recall left-arm spinner Tom Andrews against the Bushrangers.
Former SA leg-spinner Tom O’Connell, 18, has eight wickets for Victoria but Adam Zampa is the best performed tweaker in the competition with 9 at 21.
“He has been on fire, an Aussie call up wouldn’t be far away, he is controlling middle overs,” said Richardson of leg-spinner Zampa.
“He has a new run- up, action and spinning the ball both ways.”

BattleTech is out to get me. The turn-based tactics game from Harebrained Schemes—the studio that cut its teeth on resurrecting “Nineties Cool” franchises with Shadowrun Returns—has now revived the world of MechWarrior in absolutely savage fashion. The studio’s latest chosen universe blends grounded combat between ostensibly humanoid robots with medieval politics transplanted to the final frontier. It is, to put it mildly, entirely my jam.
Which is exactly why I’ve let BattleTech endlessly brutalize me for the past few weeks.
BattleTech is very difficult, although not in the ways you might expect. The game sets you up as a mercenary in the middle days of the same universe as MechWarrior, but instead of piloting multi-ton titans, the player now assumes the role of a mercenary leader. It’s through the uneven responsibilities of a small, violent business owner that BattleTech challenged me the most.

Meghan Markle, 36, has just a few weeks to go until she marries her fiance, Prince Harry, 33, in Windsor.
Whilst the nerves may be kicking in, she looked calm and collected after joining him at the Invictus Games trials in Bath.
The pair watched the UK team practice and try out for the event which will take place in Sydney, and the royal struggled with the strong winds.
Whilst known for having coiffed and well-styled hair, Meghan failed to maintain it during particularly violent gusts.
Her long locks were blown in front of her face while she was walking along the tracks.
She tried to hold it in place against her head a number of times but failed to fight the strong winds.
Thankfully it calmed down when they met some of the athletes and spoke to the organisers along with Harry, who is a Patron of the Invictus Games Foundation.
Meghan went for another black outfit, styling black Mother denim jeans and matching polo shirt.
The sporty look was offset by a khaki Baboon Aritzia jacket and pointed stiletto boots.
Whilst she often wears her long hair tied back, she perhaps regretted wearing her hair down this time.
The couple visited the University of Bath Sports Training Village, with the actual event taking place in Australia in October.
They watch the indoor sitting volleyball trials together after watching the athletics track runners.
Sydney is to be the fourth city to host the Invictus Games, following on from London in 2014, Orlando in 2016 and Toronto last year, which Meghan attended.
It was one of the first public displays of affection caught on camera between the two of them.
The pair could be seen hugging and exchanging a kiss on the balcony at the closing ceremony.
Meghan and Harry have just five weeks before they are to tie the knot, with the ceremony taking place on May 19.
Not much has been confirmed surrounding the nuances of the day, apart from the cake designer and the flowers.
Claire Ptak from Violet Bakery in Hackney has been asked to make the wedding cake, which will be lemon elderflower.
She was previously interviewed by Meghan on her now-closed lifestyle website The Tig.
The flowers are also being sourced from the UK with florist Philippa Craddock being confirmed.
Rumours have suggested that the dress designer could be Erdem.

Earl, 19, made his Preston debut in August and has featured 12 times in the Championship this term.
The two Premier League clubs are both closely following his development, according to The Sun.
Liverpool have struggled at left-back in recent years and Jurgen Klopp fancies strengthening in the position.
Meanwhile, Everton boss Sam Allardyce is on the hunt for Leighton Baines’ long-term successor.
Earl is currently sidelined after undergoing a minor operation on cartilage damage last month.
The Southport-born starlet is under contract with Preston until June 2020 after penning a three-year deal in September.
Speaking at the time, Lilywhites boss Alex Neil said: “Josh has been excellent, he’s been a real surprise for me because I didn’t really know anything about him.
“He played at Lancaster last year and came through the youth system and as soon as I saw him in the first couple of games I thought we had a cracker on our hands.
“I think for what he has done in the first team he has been rightly rewarded, he has all the attributes to become a top player for us going forward.”
Earl added: “I’m happy to sign it, it has all happened for me in the last few weeks and I can’t thank the gaffer enough for the opportunity he has given me.
“Obviously getting my first pro contract was a big thing for me but signing this new contract is a big moment for myself and my family and I’m happy with how I have done so far.
“I never expected all this to happen, the plan was to go on loan at the start of the season and get games but the opportunity came about here and I like to think I have taken it.
“The first four games I’ve played have been tough but slowly and surely I’m getting to grips with it.”
