ECB president Christine Lagarde has presided over two consecutive interest rate hikes.

  • The European Central Bank just pulled the trigger on its biggest interest rate hike.
  • The central bank increased rates by 75 basis points, and signaled further hikes.
  • Economies around the world are raising rates as they battle to keep surging inflation in check.

The European Central Bank on Thursday raised interest rates by 75 basis points as the eurozone battles to keep spiraling inflation in check.

The central bank announced that its base rate would increase from 0% to 0.75% in a press release, saying the move comes as a step "to dampen demand and guard against the risk of a persistent upward shift in inflation expectations."

The hike — the largest in ECB history — is the second in as many meetings for the central bank, which in July increased rates for the first time since 2019, moving its base rate from minus 0.5% to 0%, a first increase under its president, Christine Lagarde.

The euro was trading marginally higher after the ECB decision at $ 1.0020. On Monday, the single currency fell below $ 0.99 for the first time in two decades after Russia halted flows of natural gas to Europe.

Raising rates for a second time in three months comes against a backdrop of economic peril for Europe as it fights to combat the soaring cost of living, triggered largely by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which has pushed up both food and energy prices in recent months.

Inflation in the Eurozone reached 9.1% in August, up from 8.9% in July, its highest level since the creation of the single currency in 1999.

Central banks across the globe are raising rates to combat inflation, with the Federal Reserve in the US having hiked three times already in 2022, and the Bank of England bumping rates six times since December to reach 1.75%.

An ECB rate hike had been widely expected by analysts, with only the scale of the increase in question. Opinions had differed on whether the central bank would raise by 50 basis points, as it did in July, or by the larger 75 basis points. Further hikes are expected in coming months.

The Voice Recap: Night 2 of the Battles Tees Up a Couple of Head-Scratching Saves and a Particularly Painful Cut https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-recap-night-2-of-the-battles-tees-up-a-couple-of-head-scratching-saves-and-a-particularly-painful-cut/ https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-recap-night-2-of-the-battles-tees-up-a-couple-of-head-scratching-saves-and-a-particularly-painful-cut/#respond Tue, 06 Apr 2021 10:44:45 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-recap-night-2-of-the-battles-tees-up-a-couple-of-head-scratching-saves-and-a-particularly-painful-cut/ OK, so maybe I’m the only viewer of The Voice who was quite so crestfallen to see a Blind Auditions frontrunner get cut Monday night. I always make the mistake of getting too attached to contestants way too early. But even for me, the episode wasn’t a total bummer as a couple of other early standouts managed to stand out even further. Who were they? Read on, it’s recap time!

The voice recap Cam Anthony zae romeo battlesTeam Blake: Cam Anthony (Grade: A) defeated Emma Caroline (Grade: B-) on “10,000 Hours” — Emma saved by Blake | In rehearsal, the competitors inspired the best of all possible compliments from their advisors, who originally performed the song with Justin Bieber. “They sing it better than we do,” exclaimed Dan + Shay. “It’s upsetting.” But Blake warned Emma that while Cam “is performing, you’re singing.” She needed to crank up the charisma. On stage, Cam sounded and looked like a freakin’ superstar; the guy was born for the spotlight. Emma, meanwhile, sounded lovely but had an unfortunate deer-in-headlights quality through much of the number. Not sure it was a smart move for Blake to save her when even he admitted that in doing so, “I wanted to scare some stage presence into you.”

Team Kelly: Gihanna Zoe (Grade: A) defeated Halley Greg (Grade: B+) on “Thinking Out Loud” | After hearing the duo rehearse, I’ll admit I was worried about Halley, who, along with Cam, was one of my absolute favorites from the Blinds. She’d nailed her big, belty note, but Gihanna sounded like she was inhabiting the notes as much as singing them; that was gonna be tough to beat. In the moment of truth, good Lorde, Gihanna just sounded like she was pulling tricks out of a bottomless bag. She was magnificent; her vocal, massive and emotional. Halley was good, too, but by and large, softer and more ethereal, which definitely gave Gihanna the edge. Still, I was gutted that no one stole Halley; no two ways about it, she’s special.

Team Legend: Zania Alake (Grade: B+) defeated Durell Anthony (Grade: C) on “Emotion” | Running through the Bee Gees/Destiny’s Child hit with their coach and advisor Brandy, Zania sounded far stronger than Durell despite his much-praised falsetto; she just needed to make sure that she had enough air to make it through her whole runs. When they took their place behind the mic, Durell sounded like he was hanging on by a thread to his pitch. Zania, on the other hand, sang with great confidence. Even though the duet as a whole never really gelled, it was like there was light being beamed out of her throat as much as sound. “You delivered once again,” summed up John.

Team Blake: Jordan Matthew Young (Grade: B+) defeated Keegan Ferrell (Grade: C) on “Calling All Angels” — Keegan stolen by Nick | After rehearsal, the big concern about Keegan was confidence. Blake loved his “wiggly vibrato,” but like Emma before him, he wasn’t owning the room; how was he gonna own the stage? Jordan didn’t lack presence, but Dan + Shay wanted him to command rather than politely request attention. In the moment of truth, Keegan sounded pretty but flat — not tonally, there just wasn’t any there there, nothing unique or particularly memorable (though Kelly’s fill-in Kelsea Ballerini was really wowed by his high note). Jordan, with his grittier voice, dominated with ease. If you’d told me I was watching a guest performer in the finale, I would’ve believed you. He was a total fish in water. Or a fish in bell bottoms, at least. Couldn’t believe Nick stole Keegan instead of Halley!

The voice recap Cam Anthony zae romeo battlesTeam Nick: Zae Romeo (Grade: A) defeated Lindsay Joan (Grade: A-) on “Rewrite the Stars” | In rehearsal, advisor Darren Criss worried that, despite the contestants’ good instincts, their performance wasn’t meshing as a duet. (See also: Zania and Durell.) Suffering from his-and-hers fears, Zae and Lindsay just weren’t connecting. On stage, though, they pulled it together. Zae in particular really nailed the emotion of the song, whereas Lindsay shone more brightly in the technical aspects. Tough call, but I’d have had to have gone with Zae. The guy is the total package, and whereas Lindsay sometimes gave the sense that she was acting, from him, I only had a sense of feeling. Plus, how good would his name look in lights?

Team Kelly: Corey Ward (Grade: B-) defeated Savanna Woods (Grade: B+) on “Dreams” — Savanna saved by Kelsea for Kelly | Practicing with Kelly and Luis Fonsi, Savanna started Corey shaking in his boots. “She knows how to use her instrument to a T,” marveled Luis, adding that the competitors actually made one another better during their performance. Mebbe, but to me, he sounded outclassed; Savanna’s a beast in the best way. When the spotlight fell on the duo, Corey acquitted himself nicely, sculpting notes out of thin air. This wasn’t anywhere near as exciting a Savanna performance as her Blind, but I still couldn’t take my ears off her. We’ve heard a lot of Coreys, far fewer Savannas; she should stand way the hell out in the Four-Way Knockout.

Finally, given extremely short shrift was the Battle between Team Legend’s Ciana Pelekai and Denisha Dalton in which the former emerged victorious. Eesh — guess the “vocal risks” their coach mentioned them taking didn’t exactly pay off.

So, who stood out for you Monday night? Vote for the best Battle-r in the poll below, then hit the comments, if only to tell me that yes, I was the only one so bummed about Halley being eliminated.

The Voice Recap: Which Contestants Survived Night 2 of the Battles — and Which Major Contender Didn’t? https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-recap-which-contestants-survived-night-2-of-the-battles-and-which-major-contender-didnt/ https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-recap-which-contestants-survived-night-2-of-the-battles-and-which-major-contender-didnt/#respond Wed, 11 Nov 2020 02:25:03 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-recap-which-contestants-survived-night-2-of-the-battles-and-which-major-contender-didnt/ Let the head-scratching begin. During Night 2 of The Voice’s Season 19 Battles, three more contestants were given the hook, including one that, for my money, could’ve given Gwen Stefani her first-ever win. Who went down for the count before the Knockouts had even begun? Read on…

Team Kelly: Desz (Grade: B+) defeated Joseph Soul (Grade: B) on “If You Don’t Know Me by Now” — Joseph stolen by Gwen | After their first run-through, Kelly warned that she’d heard some pitchy parts. Ruh-roh. Advisor Leon Bridges recommended that Joseph sell the more subdued moments that he might’ve shied away from rather than belt to keep up with Desz. “I don’t want to be left in the dust,” he admitted. On stage, Joseph looked nervous but sounded fine. Desz, on the other hand, looked like she was born and raised in the spotlight and sounded amazing. As the song went on, Joseph stepped up his game, but then, so did Desz — to heights that he just couldn’t reach.

the voice recap jim ranger desz battlesTeam Blake: Jim Ranger (Grade: A) defeated John Sullivan (Grade: B+) on “Good as You” | In rehearsal, Blake had no sooner assigned his team members Kane Brown’s hit than he introduced their advisor… Kane Brown. No pressure, fellas. Running through the number, both guys’ tones were really cool, but Jim’s tendency to explode seemed likely to outshine him. By the same token, Blake warned him not to sing at but to the audience, prompting Jim to admit that yeah, he suffered from a condition known as oversinging. When the spotlight fell on J&J, John’s natural appeal served him well, but Jim’s richer, pointier voice stood out. Like, way out. They sounded terrific together once they really got going, but there was no question in my mind that Jim had won: Dude’s a showstopper.

the voice recap jim ranger desz battlesTeam Legend: John Holiday (Grade: A-) defeated Julia Cooper (Grade: B-) on “Summer Soft” — Julia saved by John (thus sending her to a four-way Knockout) | John assigned his duo a ridiculously challenging Stevie Wonder classic — and they actually rose to the challenge. Advisor Miguel then went and upped the ante by suggesting they pick even more places in the complicated song to embellish. It was gonna be a Faberge egg wrapped in a spiderweb by the time they were done! On stage, John seized every opportunity to show off, but Julia nonetheless impressed at first with her cool lower register. As the performance went on, Julia often seemed to be kinda yelling to me, whereas John, doing the same thing, came off more melodic. “I don’t even understand how you’re real,” Gwen told John when they were done. His range was unbeatable, despite the many and varied ways that Julia wowed the coaches.

And given short shift in a quickie montage were Tanner Gomes defeating Skylar Alyvia Mayton to remain on Team Kelly, and Chloe Hogan defeating Lain Roy to hold onto her spot on Team Gwen (meaning that argh, Gwen dumped an actual potential winner).

Was anyone else as stunned as I was that Gwen cut Lain? Or as bummed that Blake cut John? At least I could see how he lost to Jim Ranger. Vote for your favorite of the night below, then hit the comments.

The Voice Recap: Which Nine — Well, Technically, 11 — Singers Became the Last to Make It Through to the Battles? https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-recap-which-nine-well-technically-11-singers-became-the-last-to-make-it-through-to-the-battles/ https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-recap-which-nine-well-technically-11-singers-became-the-last-to-make-it-through-to-the-battles/#respond Tue, 03 Nov 2020 12:00:53 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-recap-which-nine-well-technically-11-singers-became-the-last-to-make-it-through-to-the-battles/ That, folks, is that. Monday’s episode of The Voice brought to a close Season 19’s Blind Auditions, adding to the coaches’ rosters the worst nightmare of Team Blake’s Sam Stacy, a coupla middling country singers and the only act in the competition that can do its own harmonies (as the photo above suggests). It also introduced to the contest a Johnny-come-lately who was so good, I thought cowabunga, he could actually win. OK, now I sound like the coaches, who seem to say that to every third contestant. Let’s recap, shall we?

Julia Cooper (Team Legend), “Alaska” — Grade: B | A “weird and quirky” 21-year-old from Poland, Ohio, Julia inspired three chairs off the bat with the distinct quaver of her voice. (Blake never was convinced.) John delighted in how she went in and out of her head voice and demonstrated not only softness and vulnerability but power. In response, Kelly suggested that Julia had a soundalike rival on Team Legend — Cami Clune. But I suspect Cami will actually go further than Julia; she may be too unique for a show that likes its contestants to fit snugly in lanes.

The Voice Recap Worth the Wait Lain Roy Blind AuditionsJohn Sullivan (Team Blake), “Operator” — Grade: A- | This — whoa — 6’7” former baseball player explained in his pre-interview that he had used music to step away from the diamond when he’d realized he wasn’t going to get drafted. On stage, he turned in an absolutely lovely Jim Croce cover that earned chair turns from Blake and Gwen. It was very true to the original and seriously dreamy. But like with teammate (and lane rival) Sam Stacy, he didn’t display the kinda vocal firepower that tends to wow voters. At least we must have an amazing John/Sam Battle to look forward to.

Skylar Alyvia Mayton (Team Kelly), “Blinding Lights” — Grade: C+ | Before her Blind, this 15-year-old expressed her fervent desire to have Kelly help her discover her musical identity. And whad’ya know? She only got one chair turn, but in that seat was Kelly’s tush. The kid clearly has talent, but on her rendition of The Weeknd hit, it struck me as a smidgen unrefined. There were iffy bits where she made me go “hmm” — never a good sign during the Blinds (when there’s time for vocals to be sweetened before air) — and a lack of richness beneath the sweetness of her tone.

The Voice Recap Worth the Wait Lain Roy Blind AuditionsLain Roy (Team Gwen), “Someone You Loved” — Grade: A | Holy crap. From the first note, this 22-year-old from a tiny Ohio town sounded like a contender. His vocal was precise, passionate and as emotional and edgy as it was beautiful; that hint of sandpaper in it was just… mm, too good! He didn’t so much perform as explode! Though it was his high-school talent-show rendition of John’s “All of Me” that really got Lain into music, he mystifyingly chose Gwen to be his coach. Could she actually score her first win?!? Even Lain said that he couldn’t believe that he’d picked Gwen.

Worth the Wait (Team Blake), “When Will I Be Loved?” — Grade: B | Ah, Season 19’s stunt group: a mother/daughters trio from teensy Centre, Ala., that only took on its current formation when the girls’ sister had to bail on the act to care for her newborn with special needs. On stage, the threesome dazzled with their harmonies — after all, what single contestant can do that? And the four-chair turns were divine — I could listen to that s—t till the cows come home. But other than the gimmick of there being three of them, I wasn’t sure that they were “special” enough to go all that far.

Emmalee (Team Kelly), “How Will I Know” — Grade: B | I would’ve turned my chair immediately for this 20-year-old singer/songwriter who once turned a childhood gift of a golf club into a mic; her voice was that powerful… at first. As the two-chair turn went on, though, I kinda got less and less impressed. Vocally, she came off good but not ultimately great. Her strength may lie less in performance than in her ability to reinterpret familiar numbers, as she did with her slowed-down, acoustic rendition of Whitney Houston’s classic.

Bailey Rae (Team Legend), “Does My Ring Burn My Finger” — Grade: C | Once a competitive clogger, this 18-year-old Oklahoman told us before her tryout that she comes from a long line of rodeo folk. But even if she hadn’t, we would have heard the giddy-up in her voice from the moment she opened her mouth on stage. Unfortunately, even through her twang, you could hear enough pitch issues to suggest that she wouldn’t make it past the Battles. Wonder if Blake will keep his promise to steal her when she gets cut — or regret having made it in the first place.

The Voice Recap Worth the Wait Lain Roy Blind AuditionsTori Miller (Team Gwen), “When You Say Nothing at All” — Grade: C | This 26-year-old told us before performing that she became besties with her since-deceased father after an eight-year estrangement owing to his addiction issues. When the spotlight fell on her, she delivered a fine, but just fine, Alison Krauss cover. Afterwards, Kelly dinged her on moments of shakiness, so whether the teams were almost all full up, a one-chair turn (at best) seemed right for Tori.

James Pyle (Team Legend), “Watermelon Sugar” — Grade: B | Growing up, this 30-year-old was regarded as a drummer — he figured, because he’d never really shown people that he could sing. Even as he stepped onto The Voice stage, he admitted that he’d only ever done a handful of gigs as a vocalist — and two of those had been sparsely-attended open mics. But damn if he didn’t bring it. His soulful Harry Styles cover reminded me of spiked ice tea — sweet, went down easy and packed more of a punch than I expected. He also had a lot more stage presence than I anticipated.

What did you think of Night 5 of the Blind Auditions? Were you as wowed by Lain as I was? Hit the comments with your thoughts, then vote for your favorite of the night in the poll below.

The Voice Recap: Did Right Singers Make It Past Night 2 of the Battles? https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-recap-did-right-singers-make-it-past-night-2-of-the-battles/ https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-recap-did-right-singers-make-it-past-night-2-of-the-battles/#respond Tue, 31 Mar 2020 02:25:22 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-recap-did-right-singers-make-it-past-night-2-of-the-battles/ The Voice’s coaches love to act like settling on the winner of a Battle is the equivalent of Sophie’s Choice. But sitting on our couches at home, it always seems pretty easy, no? We can pick the better of two singers in the time it takes us to wish we hadn’t thought a half-glass of wine was gonna hold us till the next commercial break. I can prove it, too — read on, and we’ll pick the victors, or at least the contestants who should’ve been the victors, in Monday’s Night 2 of Season 18’s Battles.

Team Blake: Toneisha Harris (Grade: B) defeated Jacob Daniel Murphy (Grade: C) on “Good as Hell” | “What the hell was that?!?” exclaimed Blake after he heard his team members run through Lizzo’s hit in rehearsal. “A duet that wasn’t gelling,” I replied to the TV. And it didn’t seem likely to get a whole lot better after Blake and advisor Bebe Rexha instructed Jacob to start using the falsetto that he wasn’t super comfy with. On stage, the twosome had so much fun that it would’ve been hard, maybe even impossible, not to have fun with ’em. Competition-wise, though, the Battle belonged to Toneisha. Lizzo’s hit wasn’t the best showcase for the power of her pipes, yet she still managed to sound, ahem, good as hell. When Jacob was in his vocal comfort zone, he was fine; he had what the coaches love to call a nice tone. Trouble was, he often left his comfort zone to go for that damn falsetto, making me wince every time. That was never gonna beat a singer who was so kickass that her coach went to the trouble of trying to decide whether she was phenomenal, a phenomenon or a phenom.

the-voice-recap-toneisha-harris-jacob-daniel-murphy-battlesTeam Kelly: Micah Iverson (Grade: B+) defeated Gigi Hess (Grade: B-) on “Someone You Loved” | “Gigi and Micah should date!” declared Kelly after seeing the way the duo ignored her and advisor Dua Lipa as they sang Lewis Capaldi’s ballad to one another. And they certainly did make beautiful music together, so to speak. Before the session wrapped, Gigi admitted that, having once weighed 300 lbs., she still struggled with her confidence; later, Micah told us that he was feeling insecure, too, having noticed how much better at runs his teammate was. Beneath the spotlight, Gigi bumped into a pitch issue right out of the gate — who the hell left that there? — but rebounded quickly. She and Micah sounded as terrific together when it counted as they had when they were just practicing (although I did kinda miss the sweeter, gentler quality of their run-through). For my money, this was Micah’s win; he was rock-solid throughout — in the moment and in the pocket. Then again, as John noted, the song was so right for Micah’s voice, it could’ve been written for him.

Team Legend: Mandi Castillo (Grade: B-) defeated CammWess (Grade: B) on “Seniorita” — CammWess stolen by Kelly | As the teammates entered the rehearsal room, their coach acknowledged that they were probably the two most different singers that he’d paired. I didn’t have high hopes for CammWess, seeing as the only thing I could recall about him from the Blinds was that the coaches tried to sing him “Happy Birthday” — and forgot his name. After the duo’s first run-through, their tentativeness with one another became a big issue. John and advisor Ella Mai reminded the twosome that Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello’s hit was, you know, hot. But “it’s too sexy,” said Mandi; she’d just met CammWess, for Pete’s sake. Post-rehearsal, they worked overtime — and no, that’s not a coy euphemism — to surprise their coach with how high they’d managed to turn up the heat. And how high was that? Um, they reached about the same temperature I eat my soup at — tepid. Mandi sounded OK but seemed especially reluctant to interact too much with her partner. CammWess, on the other hand, not only set his bedroom eyes on “come-hither,” he sang with a seductive swagger and a tone that was so rich, it could’ve been drizzled over ice cream. I could only guess that John stuck with Mandi over CammWess to keep Kelly from stealing her “musical crush.”

the-voice-recap-toneisha-harris-jacob-daniel-murphy-battlesTeam Blake: Cam Spinks (Grade: B) defeated Kailey Abel (Grade: B) on “What Ifs” | Hmm… I suspected it didn’t matter what happened during this Battle, because with country singers being so few and far between this season, Blake wasn’t going to let go of Cam for anything. That said, man, did Cam struggle. Bebe Rexha went so far as to physically shake him to try to get him to relax. The guy looked as anxious as I feel every time I think about, “Um, what’s gonna happen when The Voice runs out of pre-taped episodes?” When he and Kailey hit the stage, I could almost hear them cursing Blake in their heads for sticking them with the Kane Brown/Lauren Alaina song that wasn’t quite right for either of them. That said, they got pretty good as they picked up steam over the course of the number. Kailey got to rip out that fantastic growl of hers, which would’ve put her right over the top, had Cam not roared right back, spitting gravel like a pickup tearing down a back road. When they were done, I’d have picked Kailey for the victory. A modern-day Bonnie Tyler, she seemed a hundred times more comfortable than Cam. But I couldn’t fault Blake for going with his country boy. His vocal was strong, and his dubious stage presence wasn’t necessarily going to be a hindrance; just ask Jake Hoot — winners needn’t be showmen.

Team Nick: Tate Brusa (Grade: B+) defeated Anders Drerup (Grade: C+) on “Circles” | I thought this odd couple sounded pretty good in rehearsal, but the Jonas Brothers felt that their duet was “disjointed.” If only I could’ve told ’em, “Guys, we’ve heard worse. Just tonight, even.” After Tate got advice on dealing with his changing voice and the difference his posture could make when singing, he hit the stage ready to kick some rasp; from the first note, he was on, demonstrating better control than I’d remembered from the Blinds. There was no way Nick was going to dump him for Anders, a decent singer but one who’s more memorable for his quirkiness than his vocals. Hilariously, the coaches agreed that the teammates should probably never sing together again. Anytime they tried to sync up for a few lines, it became what Kelly called “a little chaotic.” Yeah, chuckled John, “you should not go on the road as a traveling duo.”

Team Legend: Darious Lyles (Grade: A-) defeated Nelson Cade III (Grade: B+) on “Come Together” — Nelson saved by John | After everyone remarked on one another’s jackets, Darious “leaned into” the Beatles’ classic the same way I do a pint of ice cream — wholly and enthusiastically. For his part, Nelson unleashed a vocal that was so spectacularly shredded and raspy, it was like the sonic equivalent of a Brillo pad. Which I mean as a compliment, to be clear. There was definitely going to be a Steal or a Save going down after this performance. (And OK, it was the last one of the night — that didn’t hurt the odds of neither singer going home, either.) On stage, Darious hurled notes like he was throwing fireballs. Nelson responded by scratching his vocal across the song so hard, it could’ve drawn blood. I didn’t necessarily love the way the guys sounded together — it was, what would Kelly call it? “chaotic” — but separately, they were super. This actually was a tough call. I’d probably have gone with Nelson, even though I thought Darious slightly outsang him. Nelson, it seemed, could fit in neatly in a greater variety of genres than his teammate. But there was no wrong answer to this one — they were both impressive. (Wonder if John had a strategy about sending Nelson to the four-way Knockout over Darious — like maybe Nelson has a bigger social-media following?)

Thinking over Monday’s performances, and considering the results of TVLine’s poll, I figured that the contestants who’d be losing their Battles would be Team Adam’s LB Crew, Team Legend’s Julian King, Team Legend’s Jacob Maxwell, Team Kelly’s The Bundys, Team Blake’s Karly Moreno, Team Legend’s Jimmy Mowery, Team Legend’s Beth Griffith-Manley and Team Kelly’s Abby Kasch.

Beyond that, I guessed that Blake Shelton would use his Steal on Abby if Kelly Clarkson hadn’t already Saved her (and The Bundys if she had), John Legend would use his Save on Beth, and Kelly would use hers on Abby. But was I anywhere near right? After a bare, intimate performance of “Grow Young,” which Season 14 winner Brynn Cartelli referred to as “her most vulnerable song yet,” we found out…

The Voice Cross Battles Results Show Cut… Wait, How Many Singers?!? https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-cross-battles-results-show-cut-wait-how-many-singers/ https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-cross-battles-results-show-cut-wait-how-many-singers/#respond Wed, 17 Apr 2019 13:18:25 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-voice-cross-battles-results-show-cut-wait-how-many-singers/ From here on out, the cuts were supposed to be coming fast and furious to The Voice. Tuesday’s Live Cross Battles Results Show had the potential to give the hook to a whopping eight contestants. But it turned out that Steals and Saves were what was really coming our way fast and furious. Only three singers ultimately got the hook. (Damn, it’s gotta suck to be among the contenders who’ll perform next week — so many Saves/Steals gone!)

Who were the unfortunate wannabes who were sent packing? After an understated, so-polished-you-could-see-your-refection-in-it performance of “Preach” by John Legend, we got our results…

Kim Cherry (Team Blake) vs. Betsy Ade (Team Kelly)
Saved by America’s Vote | Kim Cherry.
Stolen by Adam | Betsy Ade. After how badly she’d done Monday, I was surprised that both John and Adam Levine tried to steal her.

Matthew Johnson (Team Kelly) vs. Domenic Haynes (Team Adam)
Saved by America’s Vote | Matthew Johnson.
Saved by Adam | Domenic Haynes. So his coach really meant it when he said he’d do everything in his power to keep Domenic on his team. Also, gee — two Cross Battles results in, and already, Adam had used his Steal and his Save.

the-voice-recap-kayslin-victoria-karen-galera-eliminated-cross-battles-resultsMaelyn Jarmon (Team John) vs. Rod Stokes (Team Adam)
Saved by America’s Vote | Maelyn Jarmon.
Stolen by Kelly | Rod Stokes. So maybe in the end, Kelly Clarkson wound up with a better country singer than she’d had in Jackson Marlow, whom you’ll recall she inexplicably cut to keep Abby Kasch following their Battle.

Celia Babini (Team Adam) vs. Oliv Blu (Team Blake)
Saved by America’s Vote | Oliv Blu.
Stolen by John | Celia Babini. Monday, John had suggested that it didn’t seem like Celia was really into the song that she had been assigned. Fingers crossed he will be able to pick her numbers with which she’ll be able to better connect, because as much as I love Celia, her Live Cross Battle was… oo, not good. Also, at this point, was anyone else thinking, “Is anybody getting eliminated tonight?”

Presley Tennant (Team Kelly) vs. Kayslin Victoria (Team John)
Saved by America’s Vote | Presley Tennant.
Eliminated | Kayslin Victoria.

Lisa Ramey (Team John) vs. Karen Galera (Team Kelly)
Saved by America’s Vote | Lisa Ramey.
Eliminated | Karen Galera.

Mari (Team Adam) vs. Selkii (Team Blake)
Saved by America’s Vote | Mari.
Saved by Blake | Selkii. After her performance Monday, WTH, Blake Shelton?

Dexter Roberts (Team Blake) vs. Andrew Jannakos (Team Adam)
Saved by America’s Vote | Dexter Roberts.
Eliminated | Andrew Jannakos.

So, am I nuts, or were the coaches crazy for using up so many Steals/Saves? Do you give a thumbs up or down to the Cross Battles format? Vote in the polls below, then hit the comments.

The Voice Recap: Did the Right Singers Make It Into the Top 32? — Plus, the Live Cross Battles Format Explained https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-recap-did-the-right-singers-make-it-into-the-top-32-plus-the-live-cross-battles-format-explained/ https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-recap-did-the-right-singers-make-it-into-the-top-32-plus-the-live-cross-battles-format-explained/#respond Wed, 10 Apr 2019 07:23:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-voice-recap-did-the-right-singers-make-it-into-the-top-32-plus-the-live-cross-battles-format-explained/ As Tuesday’s episode of The Voice dropped the curtain on Season 16’s Battles — or, as I think of them, the Wait a Minute, Did I Like This Contestant During the Blinds? rounds — four more singers were told to exit stage left. Or right. The direction didn’t really matter; they just had to exit.

More importantly, we got our first official information regarding the Live Cross Battles that are starting Monday (replacing the Knockout Rounds). Not only will these be inter– rather than intra-team sing-offs, but, as Kelly Clarkson tells us in the clip below, the contestants won’t learn the identity of their opponents until they are on stage. The winners of each Cross Battle will be decided by viewers, with the results being announced on Tuesdays, at which point the coaches will be allowed to steal one eliminated vocalist from another team and save one eliminated member of their own team.

What do you think? Are you down with the shake-up? Before the debate breaks out in the comments section, let’s go over the evening’s performances.

the-voice-recap-selkii-carter-lloyd-horne-live-cross-battlesTeam Adam: Andrew Jannakos (Grade: B-) defeated Patrick McAloon (Grade: C) on “Free Fallin’” | Ahead of practice, Adam said that Patrick’s vocal style was very precise whereas Andrew’s was more untamed. (Or had he said untrained? I should really watch with the subtitles on.) In the room, Andrew admitted that his Blind had been the first time he’d ever performed on a stage. After warning his duo that their Tom Petty classic was a “very hard sustained-note situation,” they proved him right by struggling mightily. Relatively inexperienced, Andrew found himself intimidated by Patrick, though the older guy wasn’t sounding as fantastic as his coach said. On stage, Andrew started off pretty strong and controlled. Patrick went airier and more affected with his vocal. When they sang the first chorus together, Patrick was easier to hear, but that wasn’t necessarily a good thing; he sounded kinda whiny. They weren’t awful, but this Battle wasn’t likely to get anybody saying, “OMG, The Voice is so much better than American Idol this season” or anything.

the-voice-recap-selkii-carter-lloyd-horne-live-cross-battlesTeam Blake: Selkii (Grade: B) defeated Cecily Hennigan (Grade: B+) on “Head Above Water” | Ahead of practice, Blake Shelton explained that he’d paired these two competitors because they both had singer/songwriter vibes to them. I was immediately worried, as I’d liked both of their Blind Auditions and didn’t want to lose either of them. In rehearsal, Blake suggested that the Avril Lavigne song that he’d assigned them would allow them to show their range. Cecily’s approach was more melodic, Blake noted; Selkii, more angst-ridden. If teenage Cecily wanted a shot at the win, Brooks & Dunn suggested that she’d want to turn up her own angst, too. Blake thought the winner would come down to which of them was more “believable” on the song. When the teammates took their places under the spotlight, Cecily looked nervous from the get-go, but she sang like a dream — clear and beautiful. And she pulled out more of a rock edge than I expected her to be able to. I couldn’t make out all the words that Selkii sang, but her voice was certainly impressive: forceful and emotional and rocky (which seems more like her default than Cecily’s). They were both good, but for my money, Cecily was better.

the-voice-recap-selkii-carter-lloyd-horne-live-cross-battlesTeam Blake: Carter Lloyd Horne (Grade: C) defeated LiLi Joy (Grade: D) on “I Got You, Babe” | In a blessedly abbreviated Battle, Carter and LiLi mangled Sonny and Cher’s classic. From what little we heard, though, Carter flailed outside his country comfort zone but was still closer to on pitch than wiggy LiLi.

Team Kelly: Karen Galera defeated Alena D’Amico on “Imagine” | We saw so little of this Battle that I couldn’t even assign grades. But recalling how enamored of Karen, and of having a bilingual artist, Kelly was during the Blinds, her jettisoning Alena wasn’t a big surprise. Plus, she mentioned here that she went with the singer who she felt could better handle the nerves that would be amped up going forward.

Team John: Kayslin Victoria (Grade: B) defeated Oliv Blu (Grade: B+) on “Location” — Oliv stolen by Blake | In rehearsal, Khalid explained to a starstruck Kayslin and Oliv that he wrote the song they were performing in the shower when he was in high school. “Make it your own,” though, he advised. Kayslin impressed her coach with her confidence; Oliv, with her song styling. But the latter had enough trouble hitting a high note that John advised her just not to go for it. Still, she seemed to flourish when Khalid riffed with her. In the moment of truth, Oliv came out swinging, looking and sounding like she was totally feeling the song. Kayslin had a little pitch problem early on and came off more like she was performing in a school talent show. By the second verse, though, she was in the zone. For most of the song, I thought I preferred the richer, deeper tone of Oliv’s voice. But by the end, I was kinda Team Kayslin. She was vivacious and had gotten so much right that that little bit of pitchiness toward the beginning was long forgotten.

So, are you satisfied with the Top 32? And what are your thoughts/concerns about the Live Cross Battles format? Before you hit the comments, vote for your Night 4 favorite from the Battles in the poll below.

The Voice Recap: Which Singers Were the First Casualties of the Battles? https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-recap-which-singers-were-the-first-casualties-of-the-battles/ https://briefnews.eu/the-voice-recap-which-singers-were-the-first-casualties-of-the-battles/#respond Tue, 26 Mar 2019 06:49:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-voice-recap-which-singers-were-the-first-casualties-of-the-battles/ “Just duet” became The Voice’s unofficial motto Monday as Season 16 launched the Battles, which thanks to their bizarreness — “OK, you guys sing beautifully together… even as you try to blow each other off the stage and out of the competition!” — might just be my favorite of all the rounds. Also, it’s the Battles that let us know if our early favorites are as good as their Blind Auditions made us think that they were. (Don’t let me down, Maelyn Jarmon!)

On hand to help the coaches guide their contestants were onetime Team Alicia Keys adviser Charlie Puth (Team Adam Levine), Season 15’s Comeback Stage coach Kelsea Ballerini (Team Kelly Clarkson), Brooks & Dunn (Team Blake Shelton) and Khalid (Team John Legend). And on hand to rewind through the performances with you was… uh, me. So, who became the first casualties — and Steals — of the Battles? Read on…

the voice recap shawn sounds the bundys battlesTeam John: Shawn Sounds (Grade: B+) defeated Matthew Johnson (Grade: B) on “Never Too Much” — Matthew stolen by Kelly | In rehearsal, John admitted that it “pained” him to pit these two four-chair-turners against one another. But they did sound downright dreamy on their Luther Vandross cover. And when the guys went head-to-head on stage, first of all, it was a blast. Mr. Personality Matthew looked like he was having the time of his life, so much so that I think I got a contact high through the screen. Shawn was less joyful, more showoffy, but the tactic still worked: I couldn’t take my eyes off him. Vocally, they were both good, but compared side to side (ear to ear?), Shawn’s performance suggested that he had greater range and more vocal tricks up his sleeve.

the-voice-recap-shawn-sounds-bundys-battlesTeam Kelly: The Bundys (Grade: A) defeated Mikaela Astel (Grade: B-) on “Songbird” | I hated to see Mikaela, one of my faves from the Blinds, paired up with the show’s first-ever trio. How could any single voice beat three, right? In rehearsal, the 14-year-old kinda answered that question for me, though — she just. Sounds. Special. It’s that simple. Her voice is pure and heartfelt. On stage, she came off like an angel — nervous but an angel nonetheless. Her vocals were clear as a bell and blessed with a stunning vulnerability. There were, however, a coupla pitchy moments, which left the door open for the Battle to go to The Bundys, who frankly performed flawlessly. Their voices blended in a way that virtually defined the word magical.

the voice recap shawn sounds the bundys battlesTeam Blake: Gyth Rigdon (Grade: B) defeated Rod Stokes (Grade: B+) on “Drunk Me” — Rod stolen by Adam | In rehearsal, Rod hilariously admitted that he was so starstruck meeting Brooks & Dunn, he was fangirling. But once he and Gyth got to singing, they sounded pretty evenly matched. Once they took their place in the spotlight, Gyth showed us right off the bat what a showman working the club scene had made him. Rod’s voice struck me as kinda weird — not bad just unusual, which I reckon is a good thing; it’d make him stand out. The longer this match-up went on, the more raucous it became. These guys were pretty badass. Powerful voices on both of ’em, but I had to give the edge to Rod; the uniqueness of his vocal made him stand out for me. Couldn’t fault Blake for going with Gyth, though. Not only did he slay, but he looks like a country-Western lifeguard to boot.

the-voice-recap-shawn-sounds-bundys-battlesTeam Adam: Domenic Haynes (Grade: A-) defeated Trey Rose (Grade: B-) on “I Need a Dollar” | While the guys were rehearsing with their coach and adviser, I was forced to do something I rarely do — give Adam credit; the Aloe Blacc hit that he had his team members tackling really worked for both of ’em. That said, Domenic seemed to have the edge over Trey; his voice sounded as cool and unique here as it had during his Blind. In the moment of truth, Domenic, from the get-go, sang like a man possessed, the growl in his voice demanding that I stop typing this recap and watch his performance. Trey sounded good, too — really good. He was solid and polished, and nailed his falsetto moment. But sweet Jiminy Cricket, there was just no competing with Domenic. Front to back, dude’s a star.

the-voice-recap-shawn-sounds-bundys-battlesTeam John: Maelyn Jarmon (Grade: A+) defeated Savannah Brister (Grade: A-) on “When We Were Young” | Oooh, I had been dying to hear Maelyn sing again since her preposterously good Blind! As for Savannah… hmm, I wouldn’t have remembered who she was, had the show not replayed her audition. (Not that she was bad, mind you; she just hadn’t stuck in my mind.) In rehearsal, Maelyn sounded as spectacular as I’d remembered her being. Savannah, after some coaching, sounded so good, I was mad at myself for having forgotten her. Once they took to the stage, I kept waiting for the moment that Maelyn would be so much better than Savannah that John’s decision would be a no-brainer. But jeez, Savannah really brought it; she demonstrated tremendous range, and the emotion in her voice was heart-tugging. Still, Maelyn was Maelyn, and Maelyn is kinda-sorta perfection to the nth degree. Or whatever comes after the nth degree. She’s that amazing. And at least Savannah will get another chance through The Comeback Stage.

Team Kelly: Jej Vinson (Grade: B) defeated Beth Griffith-Manley (Grade: B+) on “Jealous” — Beth stolen by John | As Beth and Jej started rehearsing, it didn’t sound to me like their voices were gelling tremendously well. Individually, they were lovely, but together? Not so much. Maybe that was because Jej was putting runs, like, everywhere. When the teammates/competitors took their turn on stage, Jej started off singing with stunning vulnerability; Beth, with greater passion, a bit more force. The contrast between their approaches worked pretty nicely, actually, and they managed to come together on the choruses better than I expected. In the final analysis, I’d have to have given the win to Beth — that little bit of “cry” in her voice was unbeatable (well, except for the fact that in Kelly’s ears, Jej beat it). Her performance struck me as real and raw; his, very good but less “present.”

So, which Battle-r did you think gave the night’s best performance? Vote in the poll below, then hit the comments. Am I crazy, or was this a pretty excellent Night 1 of the Battles?

‘Bumblebee’ Clip: ‘Bot Brawl! Bumblebee Battles Blitzwing, Baby! https://briefnews.eu/bumblebee-clip-bot-brawl-bumblebee-battles-blitzwing-baby/ https://briefnews.eu/bumblebee-clip-bot-brawl-bumblebee-battles-blitzwing-baby/#respond Fri, 21 Dec 2018 00:30:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bumblebee-clip-bot-brawl-bumblebee-battles-blitzwing-baby/ Blumblebee clip new

Almost everyone who has seen it seems to agree that Bumblebee is indeed the best Transformers movie (make of that what you will!). Michael Bay is out of the director’s chair, and Travis Knight is in. Knight’s take on the material is different than Bay’s, and that’s paid off. Ahead of Bumblebee‘s impending release, watch a new Bumblebee clip below where Bumblebee brawls with the Decepticon Blitzwing.

Bumblebee Clip

Most of the Bumblebee marketing so far has played up the friendship angle between Bumblebee and Hailee Steinfeld‘s character Charlie. But this clip goes all-out on the action, presenting a kinetic fight scene in which Bumblebee is engaged in a big, sprawling brawl with the evil Blitzwing. While this is still a bit too chaotic for my taste, I do appreciate how much clearer the action is here when compared to the other Transformers films, which had very blurry battles that were hard to make sense of.

What I’m getting at here is that Bumblebee is clearly going to be a vast improvement on the Michael Bay Transformers movies. I know there are plenty of people out there who like Bay’s Transformers flicks – they made bajillions of dollars, after all – but they’ve never been for me. But this might be the first Transformers movie I’m genuinely interested in seeing. Our own Hoai-Tran Bui gave Bumblebee a positive review, praising the film for having a real heart:

Bumblebee feels like the first Transformers movie to understand what the franchise is. No matter how militaristic, and bombastic, and oddly violent the Transformers movies get, at their core, they’re still based on a toy line. Unburdened by the convoluted mythology of the Transformers universe, Bumblebee taps into that core and makes a movie for the child in all of us who just wants to know what it’s like to become friends with one of the robot action figures we smashed together.

Bumblebee, starring Hailee Steinfeld, John Cena, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., John Ortiz, Jason Drucker, Pamela Adlon, and Stephen Schneider, opens everywhere on December 21.

On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug
