New York Attorney General Letitia James and Donald Trump

  • NY AG Letitia James sued Donald Trump, his three eldest kids, and Trump Organization on Wednesday.
  • Her demands — including $ 250 million in penalties and the hamstringing of his business in NY  — will be fought over for years, experts say.
  • James is now 'just another litigant' in a slow-moving system that Trump knows how to game, they say.

So New York Attorney General Letitia James has sued Donald Trump, his kids, and his company. But don't bother popping any popcorn over this massive fraud lawsuit anytime soon.

Very little will actually happen to Trump, his three eldest children, or the Trump Organization — the former president's Manhattan-based real estate and golf empire — over the next two years and maybe longer, three former prosecutors with the NY AG's office told Insider.

That's because litigating the 222-page lawsuit will be a slow, costly slog, they predict.

"This is going to be an eye-glazing battle" of experts and lawyers, before the lawsuit even goes to trial, one ex-prosecutor, Armen Morian, said of what's to come.

Morian, now in private practice in Manhattan at Morian Law, knows about slow slogs. He prosecuted the New York AG's case against Hank Greenberg, the one-time CEO of insurance giant AIG.

That prosecution took 13 years to reach a 2017 settlement, with Greenberg fighting every step of the way before finally agreeing, at age 93, to pay $ 9 million to the state of New York.

"You're at the starting line," Morian told Insider. "Now that he's a litigant, Trump is entitled to drag this case out as long as he can. This will play out over years."

First a little judge shopping, perhaps

The first step in that slog? A bit of judge-shopping, Morian and others predict.

The lawsuit's defendants may well want to move the case as far away as possible from the courtroom of NY state Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron.

That's the Manhattan judge who repeatedly ruled against Trump in the two-year lead-in to the AG's lawsuit. It was Engoron who held Trump in contempt and ordered he pay $ 110,000 in fines for not cooperating fully with James' inquiry.

Morian predicts the defendants will try to move the case to a judge in the state court system's commercial division, a paperwork-heavy process that Trump's lawyers have failed at previously.

"The commercial division is set up to handle lawsuits involving only commercial parties, not an attorney general, so that would draw a pretty quick denial," said another former NY assistant AG, Tristan Snell. "But it could buy Trump's side a month or so."

Next: many months of slow-mo motion practice

Next will come many more months of what's called motion practice, with Trump's side kicking the process off.

Lawyers for the defendants — all 17 of them, including Trump Org subsidiaries and former executives — will have 30 days to file response motions, in writing, to the judge, explained author and attorney Kenneth McCallion, a former prosecutor who handled complex litigation in the Department of Justice and the NY AG's office.

With that, they're off to the races — in excruciating slow motion. A long, litigation timeline is simply built in, given the magnitude of the lawsuit, former AG prosecutors told Insider.

By numbers alone, the lawsuit's scope is staggering.

Millions of pages of evidence

The AG's office reviewed 900,000 Trump business documents totaling 6 million pages. The resulting lawsuit encompasses alleged financial wrongdoing at 23 of the company's properties over the past decade.

The lawsuit is also very complex in what it demands, asking Engoron to throw the book at Trump, litigationally speaking.

Requests, she has a few

It demands the repayment of $ 250 million that James says Trump illegally pocketed, allegedly by misleading banks about his worth. The banks relied on the iffy math in giving Trump lower interest rates and lending him more money than he would otherwise have been entitled to, she claims.

The lawsuit also demands that Trump and his three eldest children — who have all served as Trump Organization executives — be permanently barred from running a New York corporation.

It demands that Trump personally be barred from buying property in New York and from borrowing from a New York-registered bank for five years and that a court-appointed receiver monitor the company's finances for that period.

And, as perhaps it's most extreme demand, the lawsuit wants the judge to yank the New York papers of incorporation that let Trump Org draw revenue from his New York properties, including the commercial rents at his Manhattan skyscrapers.

Litigating all those meaty demands and all those shoals of paperwork will take time, particularly pretrial.

"She will pay for bringing such an aggressive, gargantuan, and unwieldy case," Morian predicted, "assuring that this case will move at a snail's pace, to the defendants' advantage."

Along the way, "it's possible that there will be other lawsuits or other actions by the counter-parties," such as the banks, accountants and appraisers that James' lawsuit also mentions, Morian said.

A battle over the Fifth

McCallion thinks Trump's decision to plead the Fifth more than 440 times during his court-ordered August deposition before James is the former president's legal "Achilles heel" and will be fought over especially hard.

Should he keep the case, and should it go to trial, Engoron is allowed to hold Trump's refusal to answer questions against him. Much of the pre-trial litigation will involve how much weight the judge can give all that Fifth-pleading.

Finally, as the case lurches closer to trial, it will then enter what Morian calls the "battle of experts" phase, with dueling reports, reply reports, and eventually expert trial testimony.

The AG and the defendants will likely spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on these experts, who will duke it out on paper and on the witness stand over whether Trump's valuations were reasonable and how common it may be for businesses to offer different appraisals to impress banks, insurance brokers and tax authorities.

James' experts will call fraud on Trump's alleged practice of offering widely varied appraisals for the same properties, depending on the hoped-for outcome, the former prosecutors said. The defendants' experts will call it business as usual.

"A case does not get better with age," McCallion noted of the long, pre-trial haul ahead.

Just another litigant

"The AG is at the height of her powers before she sues," Morian noted, crediting New York's tough executive law, which grants its AGs broad power to subpoena for evidence and testimony and fast-tracks fraud and corruption inquiries.

But after she files the lawsuit, he said, "she's just another litigant," in an often slow-moving legal system Trump knows how to game.

James will push for a tight motions schedule, but, "I'm not sure what basis she'll have for that. Where's the fire?" Morian asked. "Where's the emergency?"

Meanwhile, Trump has every reason to heel-drag.

"He will raise money on it, and he will campaign on it," Morian predicted of the lawsuit. "He doesn't want this resolved before the 2024 election, in case it goes against him."

There's another benefit to dragging out motions practice. The longer the case takes, the more likely the statute of limitations will expire on any potential criminal wrongdoing.

Trump would then be able to testify on his own behalf at any potential civil trial without the threat of incriminating himself.

Any trial testimony would help blunt the fact that Trump pleaded the Fifth some 400 times during last month's deposition at the AG's office in Manhattan.

Could the case drag out 13 years? "Probably not. But who knows," Morian said with a laugh, noting that however long it goes, Trump appears ready for the long haul.

"Whatever you want to say about him," Morian said, "he's a pretty energetic guy."

  • Aircraft carriers are usually the centerpiece of a fleet, but only a few navies have them.
  • Many more navies have amphibious assault ships or helicopter carriers, which carry aircraft, troops, and gear.
  • Amphibs and helicopter carriers give smaller navies capabilities like those of larger naval powers.

Few warships get as much attention as aircraft carriers. Massive in size and marvels of engineering, they are essential tools of power projection and symbols of national status.

Today, eight countries — the US, UK, France, Spain, Italy, India, Russia, and China — operate flattops capable of launching and landing fixed-wing aircraft, but the list grows when amphibious assault ships and helicopter carriers are included.

Amphibious assault ships and helicopter carriers evolved from the island-hoping campaigns of World War II. They allow for the simultaneous deployment of naval infantry and air support.

As multipurpose vessels, they can carry out other missions — notably anti-submarine warfare.

While not as imposing as full-fledged flattops, amphibious assault ships and helicopter carriers allow smaller navies to wield capabilities usually reserved to larger maritime powers.

San Giorgio-class

Italy navy amphibious ship San Marco
Italian navy amphibious ship San Marco in the Mediterranean Sea in 2016.

The ships of Italy's San Giorgio-class have been extensively modified since the first one was commissioned in 1988.

The first two ships, San Giorgio and San Marco, are 436 feet long and displace roughly 7,900 tons. The third, San Giusto, displaces over 8,000 tons.

The ships were designed as amphibious transport docks and have a well deck that can be flooded so amphibious vehicles can exit and enter. They can carry up to 350 soldiers and as many as 36 armored vehicles. They were initially armed with a bow-mounted 76mm gun, but only San Giusto still has one.

San Giorgio and San Marco were modified to have full-length decks from which four helicopters — mainly AW101s, AB-212s, or SH-90s — can operate. As a result, they can only carry two landing craft to transport troops and equipment. San Giusto can only operate one helicopter, but it can carry three landing craft.

In 2011, Algeria ordered an improved variant of the San Giorgio-class, which was commissioned as Kalaat Béni Abbès in 2014.

At 465 feet long, it is larger than its predecessors, though its deck is only 416 feet. It can carry 450 troops and has two landing spots for AW101 or Super Lynx helicopters. It is also armed with missiles in two vertical launchers and still has the bow-mounted 76mm gun.

Type 0891A/Type 075

Type 075 (rendering)
An illustration of China's Type 075 amphibious assault ship.

In 1997, China commissioned its first aviation ship, the Type 0891A, also known as the Shichang 82. It is 410 feet long and displaces 9,500 tons. Its deck has landing spots for at least two Harbin Z-9 helicopters.

With no armaments or internal hangar, the Shichang 82 is used almost exclusively for training and transport, but the experience of operating helicopters on it — and intense study of foreign navies — informed the design of China's first real amphibious assault ship, the Type 075-class.

Displacing about 36,000 tons and measuring 778 feet, the Type 075 can carry 30 helicopters, mainly the Z-8, Z-9 and Z-20 models. Russian-made Ka-52K attack helicopters may also be part of the air wing.

Equipped with a floodable well deck, the Type 075s can carry dozens of armored vehicles, about 900 troops, and multiple hovercraft known as Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC).

Three Type 075s have been completed — two entered service in 2021 — China plans to have eight in total. There are also reports of interest in a follow-on subclass, the Type 076, which could feature electromagnetic catapults capable of launching fixed-wing drones.

Ocean/Atlântico

BNS Atlântico amphibious assault ship
BNS Atlântico in August 2019.

In 1998, the British Royal Navy commissioned HMS Ocean, which was designed to carry 800 marines and up to 40 vehicles.

Ocean didn't have a floodable well deck, but it was equipped with a stern ramp and four sets of davits on its sides to launch landing craft.

After 20 years in service with the Royal Navy, the ship was sold to Brazil in 2018. It was recommissioned the same year as Atlântico and was given upgrades. In 2020, Brazil announced that Atlântico could operate fixed-wing drones and tilt-rotor aircraft.

Its 660-foot deck can handle at least six helicopters simultaneously, mainly a combination of the EC725 Caracal, S-70B Seahawk, and AS350 Ecureuil models. Its hangar deck can store a total of 18 helicopters.

Mistral-class

French amphibious assault ship LHD Tonnerre (L9014)
French navy ship Tonnerre, the second Mistral-class amphibious assault ship.

In 2005, the French Navy commissioned the first of its three Mistral-class amphibious assault ships. Each has a 652-foot deck and a full displacement of over 21,000 tons.

The Mistrals can flood their well decks to launch 450 troops, over a dozen vehicles, and four landing craft or two LCACs.

They can also carry 16 helicopters, six of which can operate on the flight deck at a time. The helicopters most commonly used aboard Mistrals are NH-90s and SA 330 Pumas.

Two Mistrals were built for Russia, but the contract was cancelled after Moscow annexed Crimea in 2014. The ships were instead sold to Egypt, which purchased dozens of Kamov Ka-52K, Kamov Ka-29TB, and Kamov Ka-27P helicopters from Russia — helicopters that Russia was planning to use on its Mistrals.

Dokdo-class

South Korea Dokdo-class amphibious assault ship ROKS Marado

In 2007, South Korea commissioned ROKS Dokdo, the first of two Dokdo-class amphibious assault ships.

At 652 feet long and displacing over 18,000 tons, Dokdo-class ships have flat flight decks and floodable well decks. They can carry about 700 marines, roughly a dozen armored vehicles, and two LCACs.

Each Dokdo can carry up to 15 helicopters, usually a combination of UH-1Hs and UH-60P Black Hawks. Future air wings will include the KAI MUH-1 Marineons.

The second Dokdo-class vessel, ROKS Marado, was commissioned in 2021 and features a number of changes, including vertical launch cells for anti-aircraft, anti-ship, and land-attack missiles, among others.

Hyūga, Izumo, and Ōsumi-class

hyuga japan navy aircraft carrier
Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force helicopter destroyer JS Hyuga.

Not to be outdone, Japan in 2009 commissioned the first of two Hyūga-class helicopter destroyers.

Measuring 646 feet and displacing some 18,000 tons, their air wings usually consist of three SH‐60K Seahawks and one MCH‐101.

They are also armed with 16 Mk 41 vertical launch missile cells, two Phalanx close-in weapon systems, and two triple-torpedo tubes.

In addition to the two Hyūgas, Japan is converting its two Izumo-class helicopter carriers into full-fledged carriers that can operate F-35B short-takeoff and vertical-landing jets.

Japan also has three Ōsumi-class tank landing ships that are primarily tasked with transporting troops, vehicles, and landing craft but can also operate helicopters on their flat decks.

Juan Carlos I

Marine Corps MV-22B Osprey aboard Juan Carlos I
US Marine Corps MV-22B Ospreys aboard Spanish amphibious assault ship Juan Carlos I in October 2015.

In 2010, Spain commissioned the Juan Carlos I. At 757 feet long, it has a floodable well deck and can carry up to 24 aircraft, about 900 troops, and over a dozen armored vehicles, in addition to hovercraft and landing craft.

The Juan Carlos differs from most amphibious assault ships in that it can operate fixed-wing aircraft, making it more similar to the US Navy's Wasp and America classes.

The Juan Carlos I has a ski-jump ramp and a deck designed to handle the jet blast from short-takeoff and vertical-landing aircraft, like the AV-8B Harrier II jet and V-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft. (The ship could support F-35Bs, but Spain has no plans to buy them.)

Juan Carlos I's air wing is often mixed, with 12 AV-8B Harrier IIs and 12 helicopters, usually a combination of NH-90s, SH-3Ds, AB-212s and CH-47s.

Canberra and Anadolu

Marine Corps amphibious assault vehicles HMAS Canberra

The Juan Carlos I-class is named for a former Spanish king, but Spain isn't the only country that uses it.

Juan Carlos I is the basis for Australia's two Canberra-class vessels, which were partly built by the same Spanish shipyard, and for Turkey's TCG Anadolu.

The Canberra-class kept the ski-jump ramp but can't operate fixed-wing aircraft, carrying 18 helicopters instead. Their air wings are usually made up of MRH-90s and SH-60 Seahawks but can include CH-47s and ARH Tigers.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan amphibious assault ship TCG Anadolu
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan views TCG Anadolu from a plane in December 2019.

Turkey's expulsion from the F-35 program meant Ankara couldn't buy F-35Bs, and it plans to make TCG Anadolu a drone carrier instead. The new air wing will include a naval variant of the Bayraktar TB2 with foldable wings and an unmanned fighter jet currently under development.

A Turkish official said Anadolu would be able to house up to 80 drones, and Turkey plans to add a short-takeoff but arrested recovery system to the ship in order to launch and retrieve those drones. Anadolu's air wing may also include the Turkish-built T129 ATAK attack helicopter and the planned Hürjet light attack aircraft.

Anadolu is expected to enter service later this year, and there are plans for a second vessel, TCG Takya.

Wasp and America classes

USS Wasp
US Navy amphibious assault ship USS Wasp.

The US Navy has two classes of amphibious assault ships: the Wasp- and America-class.

USS Wasp entered service in 1989. The 844-foot ship can carry up to five M-1 tanks, about 35 light armored vehicles, and roughly 1,800 Marines. It displaces 40,500 tons fully loaded.

Eight Wasp-class ships were built, but one, USS Bonhomme Richard, was lost to fire damage in 2020.

America-class ships, the first of which entered service in 2014, are similar in length but can displace over 44,000 tons. USS America and second-in-class USS Tripoli can also carry roughly 1,800 Marines, but the ships are oriented toward air operations and do not have well decks.

Marine Corps America F-35B lightning carrier
USS America at sea with 13 US Marine Corps F-35Bs in October 2019.

Wasp-class ships can carry about 25 aircraft. A typical air wing consists of six to eight F-35Bs — or up to 20 if they're in what the US military calls the "lightning carrier" configuration — and a mix of SH-60 anti-submarine helicopters, UH-1Y utility helicopters, CH-53E heavy-lift helicopters, AH-1Z attack helicopters, and MV-22 tilt-rotors.

The makeup of an America-class ship's air wing depends on its mission, but its "typical air combat element" includes five F-35Bs, two UH-1Ys, four CH-53Es, 12 MV-22s, two MH-60s, and four AH-1Zs, according to Huntington Ingalls Shipbuilding.

Two of the 11 planned America-class ships are in service. The third, the future USS Bougainville, has been under construction since March 2019. Unlike its predecessors, Bougainville will have a well deck to support amphibious operations, which comes in exchange for a smaller aircraft hangar.

New Batwoman Will Battle [Spoiler] in Season 2 Premiere, While Kate Is MIA https://briefnews.eu/new-batwoman-will-battle-spoiler-in-season-2-premiere-while-kate-is-mia/ https://briefnews.eu/new-batwoman-will-battle-spoiler-in-season-2-premiere-while-kate-is-mia/#respond Thu, 31 Dec 2020 02:53:19 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/new-batwoman-will-battle-spoiler-in-season-2-premiere-while-kate-is-mia/

A “clash of the impostors” is on tap when Season 2 of the rejiggered Batwoman arrives on The CW.

As well reported over the past eight months, Ruby Rose and the Arrowverse series parted ways at the close of Season 1, so Javicia Leslie (God Friended Me) will now headline things as Ryan Wilder, a young woman who will come to claim the Batmantle.

The CW has now released a full synopsis for the Season 2 premiere, airing Sunday, Jan. 17 and titled “What Happened to Kate Kane?” It reads:

As friends and family hold on to hope that Kate may still be found, a homeless 25-year-old named Ryan Wilder stumbles upon Kate’s Batsuit. Focused on no longer being a victim, Ryan takes the suit to use as armor and goes rogue in the streets of Gotham, taking out various members of a new gang called the False Face Society.

Meanwhile, both Jacob Kane  and Luke Fox launch searches for Kate, Mary Hamilton  grapples with losing yet another family member, Sophie Moore struggles with things left unsaid to her first love, and Alice is furious that someone got to Kate before she could exact her revenge.

As Alice should be! Oh, sorry. Wait, there’s more:

At the same time, “Bruce Wayne” (played by guest star Warren Christie) returns under the pretense of searching for Kate, but the truth is he wants his suit back and it becomes the clash of imposters as “Batwoman” and “Bruce” square off in the action-packed season premiere.

Are you still curious to witness this change-up in Batwomen? And can anyone in a million years guess what song “Bruce Wayne” sings to himself during his skirmish with Ryan?

Grey’s Recap: Surge Times — Plus, [Spoiler] Loses Their COVID Battle https://briefnews.eu/greys-recap-surge-times-plus-spoiler-loses-their-covid-battle/ https://briefnews.eu/greys-recap-surge-times-plus-spoiler-loses-their-covid-battle/#respond Fri, 11 Dec 2020 03:32:46 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/greys-recap-surge-times-plus-spoiler-loses-their-covid-battle/ In Thursday’s fraught Grey’s Anatomy, things were looking up for Meredith but way down for Tom, who was ambulanced to Grey Sloan resembling nothing so much as the textbook definition of “worse for wear.” Having already lost Teddy and his chief-of-chiefs gig, was Koracick about to lose his very life? Read on and find out.

‘ARE YOU GOING TO WORK… AT THE REGULAR TIME… ?’ | As “Fight the Power” began, Teddy and DeLuca celebrated the fact that Meredith’s condition was improving, Levi discovered how hard hit by the pandemic Jo was (to the point that she was “paralyzed by excitement” in bed — ha), Bailey connected with Ben and her father over FaceTime, and Jackson asked for Richard’s help getting Catherine to properly wear her mask. (Proximity to one’s face doesn’t count as actually wearing it on one’s face, damn it!) Shortly, we learned that Luna’s mom Val required continued care, and — insert chest pains here — Tom was brought in, as advertised, in dire straits. He was so bad off, in fact, that he didn’t recognize Teddy or Owen, and seemed to think that his son was still alive.

Soon, Bailey’s mood took a sharp downturn when she learned that Silver Villas assisted-living home — where her parents were, hello! — was suffering from a COVID surge. She beseeched Ben to get her folks outta there asap, but it was already too late. By the time she got her husband’s voicemail messages, he’d arrived back at Grey Sloan with her symptomatic mother. While Maggie pondered what meds they could prescribe Bailey’s mom to calm her, Bailey herself soothed her by singing “My Girl.” Yikes, this episode was gonna be a heartbreaker, ya could just tell. In no time, Bailey was forced to call her father to inform him that the love of his life wouldn’t make it through the night. Again, yikes. Chest pains. All of it.

greys-anatomy-recap-season-17-episode-5-fight-the-power‘TREE-HITTING IS FROWNED UPON’ | Looking for a way to deal with her feelings, Bailey confided in an unconscious Meredith that her mom had once advised her to deal with her emotions by hitting a tree — her own tree. “My mother has Alzheimer’s,” Miranda went on. “I never told you” or Richard, because she hadn’t wanted to upset them. But unless you’ve been through it, “no one understands that you are watching your own mother die… twice.” Later, Bailey rang her father on Zoom so that he could see his wife. “She drifts in and out, Dad,” Bailey had to tell him. He wanted desperately to be there, but of course, that wasn’t safe. Through it all, Miranda tried to maintain a stiff upper lip. “Mom, if you’re ready to go, it’s OK,” she said. “We love you, but we don’t want you to suffer.” In response, her mom said, “Not ready… I wanna go home.”

Later, Bailey told Maggie that her mom had informed her that she wasn’t ready to go. Yet she also feared that her mom hadn’t really known what she was saying. And she was furious. She didn’t want her mother to be a statistic. “All of this is confusing… and awful,” Maggie offered. Bailey didn’t know what to think in the end. She’d been sure that Mom wouldn’t want to live with Alzheimer’s, but now… gah! She couldn’t be positive. Maggie’s opinion? Let her go. Maggie might have kept fighting to keep her own mom alive, had Diane not given her such clarity in the end. Sadly, Bailey felt that she had to beat herself up for bringing her parents to Seattle. Her mother “was exposed at the place I set up for them!” Maggie tried to insist that Bailey couldn’t feel guilty about it, but… easier said than done. “She just needs me to be a good daughter,” cried Miranda, “and I don’t know if I know how to do that.”

greys-anatomy-recap-season-17-episode-5-fight-the-power‘CAN YOU HOLD THE PHONE CLOSE ENOUGH TO SMELL HER HEAD?’ | When Jo reported to Val that she had a pseudo-aneurysm, the patient didn’t take it well. “I’ve known my baby’s name” for eight years, she said. “And now that I finally have the chance [to be a mom]… I don’t know if it will ever be real,” or if she’d only be able to see her child over FaceTime. Post-op, as Jo pondered the possibility of Val needing a liver transplant, new resident (or is he an intern?) Kahn, an MVP in his home country, marveled at the former Mrs. Karev’s excellence. Later, Jo was somehow recruited to deliver a baby. (And you thought your day was something!) That evening, Jo shared her experience with Levi. “It was the happiest thing I had ever seen,” she said, adding that hmm, Carina seemed to always be in a good mood. What if Jo changed careers? What if she gave up surgery and became an OB? “Eat and then sleep before you… ,” said Levi. “Oh my God, I sound like my mother.” Regardless, since tomorrow isn’t promised, Jo wanted to choose the joyful option.

greys-anatomy-recap-season-17-episode-5-fight-the-powerBACK FROM THE BRINK | Consulting with Teddy on Tom’s case via Zoom, Amelia decided that she had to go in to Grey Sloan; he was having neurological complications — he needed her. “We’ll be fine here,” Link said. “Go, save your friend.” Unnecessarily, Amelia mentioned that not only had Koracick saved her brain, he had been her first sex after Owen. Wait, what? Link said. TMI, Amelia. TMI. At Grey Sloan, Amelia suggested that Tom’s delirium was a side effect of COVID, not especially neuro. “I hate everything,” Jackson said when he was filled in on Koracick’s condition. In a moment alone with Teddy, Amelia admitted that she’d heard what had gone down with Tom and Owen, and though she had feelings about it, hey, she’d heard — and arguably done — worse. Later, Amelia told Teddy that Koracick’s numbers were holding. Though he was unconscious, Altman expressed to him her wish to save their friendship. “If you want to have nothing to do with me, you’re going to have to get all better and tell me yourself.” At that, he awakened. It appeared that he was gonna be fine — he was even in the mood for a sponge bath. After all those yikes-es, whew!

As the hour drew to a close, Jackson marveled to Richard that half of their COVID patients were Black or brown. “Systemic racism is the preexisting condition — existing while Black,” said Avery. He didn’t have to worry about Catherine, at least; Richard had taken care of that, Webber said — in some kind of sexual way. Shortly, he encouraged Bailey to go into her mother’s room and be there for her. “I’m scared,” she admitted. “We’ll do it together,” he replied. So in they went, so that Miranda could stroke her mom’s hair with a gloved hand and sing her one last song as she slipped away. So, what did you think of “Fight the Power”? How hard did you cry over Bailey’s mom’s death? Were you relieved Tom pulled through? Hit the comments with your observations, reactions, reviews — the works.

Amy Dowden in tears over JJ’s Strictly exit as he shares health battle ‘She lives in fear’ https://briefnews.eu/amy-dowden-in-tears-over-jjs-strictly-exit-as-he-shares-health-battle-she-lives-in-fear/ https://briefnews.eu/amy-dowden-in-tears-over-jjs-strictly-exit-as-he-shares-health-battle-she-lives-in-fear/#respond Sun, 06 Dec 2020 21:44:25 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/amy-dowden-in-tears-over-jjs-strictly-exit-as-he-shares-health-battle-she-lives-in-fear/

JJ Chalmers and Amy Dowden became the sixth couple to leave Strictly Come Dancing tonight after battling it out with Jamie Laing and Karen Hauer. The former Royal Marine Commando found himself at the bottom of the judges’ leaderboard on Saturday and the public vote was not enough to save him from the dance-off. However, JJ used his exit from the competition to highlight Amy’s health battle and praise the professional dancer as she broke down in tears.

JJ and Amy performed their Chitty Chitty Bang Bang inspired Charleston while Jamie and Karen repeated their Jive to Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.

After both couples had danced, Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse and Shirley Ballas delivered their verdict.

Craig revealed: “Well I think both couples danced to the best of their abilities and both couples upped their game considerably.

“But for me the best couple on the night that I would like to go through to semi-finals – Jamie and Karen.”

Motsi disagreed: “I actually think we saw two different dancing styles which both have their own qualities; both energetic, both so great at this dance-off – very difficult decision.

“I saw a little hiccup with one dance, so I’m saving JJ and Amy.”

It was then left to head judge Shirley to make the final call.

She said: “Both couples lifted their game, I adored both performances very very much, and both couples made small mistakes, both couples.

Addressing Amy’s battle with Crohn’s disease, JJ continued: “She’s lived through so much in her own right in fairness and I know that any day she can wake up and she could be hospitalised essentially so she lives fearing she’ll let people down.

“But the way you’ve built me up, you could never let me down.”

Amy added: “Aw JJ it has been an absolute honour to be your partner and most importantly friend, throughout your Strictly experience. He is, and everybody would agree, one of the world’s most truest gentlemen.

“I honestly believe from working with JJ over the last few months I’ve become a better person and I’ve learned so much.”

“The way he faces challenges with such strength and determination, you have helped me for the rest of my life on how to face my own personal challenges.

“And honestly I’m so proud of every single step you’ve performed on this floor, I just had the best time.

“I didn’t think I could possibly fall in love with Strictly any more and this year my heart is just beaming full of Strictly and that’s down to absolutely everybody and I love you all.”

Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday on BBC One at 7.25pm.

Mandalorian season 2: Baby Yoda in danger as first-look reveals battle against the Empire https://briefnews.eu/mandalorian-season-2-baby-yoda-in-danger-as-first-look-reveals-battle-against-the-empire/ https://briefnews.eu/mandalorian-season-2-baby-yoda-in-danger-as-first-look-reveals-battle-against-the-empire/#respond Thu, 10 Sep 2020 01:29:35 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/mandalorian-season-2-baby-yoda-in-danger-as-first-look-reveals-battle-against-the-empire/

Star Wars fans were thrilled by the franchise’s first live-action series for Disney Plus. Originally released in October 2019 in the States, The Mandalorian went on to become an international hit when it was made available overseas at the start of 2020. Now a sneak peek at season two could spell trouble for Baby Yoda.

Although the Skywalker Saga came to a rocky conclusion with last year’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, fans are still hyped for the return of the franchise’s first Disney+ series, The Mandalorian.

Pedro Pascal stars as the titular bounty hunter, known as Din Djarin or ‘Mando’ who bites off more than he can chew when he is hired to retrieve a priceless asset, known as the Child.

More commonly known as Baby Yoda thanks to its resemblance to Frank Oz’s creation in The Empire Strikes Back, the Child instantly became one of the most popular new additions to the Star Wars mythos.

When Mando discovers his ‘Client’ (played by Werner Herzog) intended to harvest the Child for his potent Force abilities, he goes against his word and escapes to protect the adorable green alien.

When season two is released on October 30, Mando and the Child will remain on the run, pursued by the fearless Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito), revealed at the end of the first season.

As The Mandalorian takes place some years after Return of the Jedi, Gideon commands a crippled faction of the Empire after the second Death Star was destroyed by the Rebel Alliance.

Revealed exclusively to Entertainment Weekly, some brand new images from season two have teased what’s to come when the space Western returns.

The pictures confirmed the return of the show’s main cast, including Pedro Pascal once again donning the sleek grey armour of the Mandalorian creed.

Look closely, and fans should be able to spot another sighting of Baby Yoda, tucked away in a pouch at the back of the speeder.

The Child could be accompanying Djarin on the hoverbike for any number of reasons, but there is already concern the green critter could be thrown headfirst into the action in season two.

Season one of The Mandalorian already proved Baby Yoda is more than capable of handling himself, demonstrated when he uses the Force to fend off a rampaging mudhorn.

However, with Moff Gideon accompanied by fleets of stormtroopers and armed with the legendary Dark Saber, there’s no telling what hazards could befall the duo when their adventures continue.

Chadwick Boseman, Black Panther Star, Dead at 43 After Cancer Battle https://briefnews.eu/chadwick-boseman-black-panther-star-dead-at-43-after-cancer-battle/ https://briefnews.eu/chadwick-boseman-black-panther-star-dead-at-43-after-cancer-battle/#respond Sat, 29 Aug 2020 09:31:39 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/chadwick-boseman-black-panther-star-dead-at-43-after-cancer-battle/

Actor Chadwick Boseman, best known for starring as T’Challa in the Marvel blockbuster Black Panther, has died at the age of 43 following a battle with colon cancer, the Associated Press reports.

Boseman died on Friday at his home in the Los Angeles area, surrounded by his wife and family. He was diagnosed with colon cancer four years ago, but never made the diagnosis public until now.

“It is with immeasurable grief that we confirm the passing of Chadwick Boseman,” his family said in a statement on Twitter. “Chadwick was diagnosed with Stage III colon cancer in 2016, and battled with it these last 4 years as it progressed to stage IV. A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more — all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther. He died in his home, with his wife and family by his side. The family thanks you for your love and prayers, and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.”

Boseman starred as baseball great Jackie Robinson in 42 and soul singer James Brown in Get on Up before taking on the title role in Marvel’s Black Panther, which became a smash hit and grossed more than $ 1.3 billion worldwide. He went on to reprise the role of T’Challa in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. A Black Panther sequel was announced in July 2019 to be in development, with an eye on a May 2022 release date.

“He was our T’Challa, our Black Panther, and our dear friend,” Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige said in a statement. “He embodied a lot of amazing people in his work, and nobody was better at bringing great men to life. He was as smart and kind and powerful and strong as any person he portrayed. Now he takes his place alongside them as an icon for the ages.”

On the TV side, Boseman recurred on the ABC Family drama Lincoln Heights as Nate, the Iraq war vet son of Russell Hornsby’s police office Eddie Sutton. He also co-starred in the NBC summer mystery Persons Unknown as one of the central seven strangers who woke up together in a strange town: Sergeant Graham McNair, a Marine, onetime mercenary and devout Muslim. His other TV credits include Fringe, Justified, Castle, ER, Law & Order and Third Watch.

Watch Boseman in a heartwarming Tonight Show segment, in which he surprised Black Panther fans:

There are some critical RSVPs — and seemingly some MIA characters? — in the first photos from the climax of DC’s Stargirl‘s Season 1 finale.

The two-part finale kicks off with “Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E. Part One” (streaming Monday, Aug. 3 on DC Universe, then airing Tuesday, Aug. 4 on The CW), in which Courtney (played by Brec Bassinger), Pat (Luke Wilson) and the team regroup to figure out their next steps, all with the ISA hot on their trail. Meanwhile, Rick (Cameron Gellman) makes a breakthrough, and the team prepares for a showdown with the ISA.

Then in “Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E. Part Two” (streaming Aug. 10 on DC Universe, airing Aug. 11 on The CW), as the Injustice Society of America comes one step closer to accomplishing their mission, Courtney and the JSA face off with Icicle and the villains of the ISA.

Specifically, the photos below show Stargirl, Wild Cat, Hourman, S.T.R.I.P.E. and an Excalibur-wielding Justin (Mark Ashworth) facing off against Icicle (Neil Jackson), Sportsmaster (Neil Hopkins), Dragon King (Nelson Lee) and Tigress (Joy Osmanski).

Where are Beth/Dr. Mid-Nite (Anjelika Washington) and Brainwave (Christopher James Baker), to name but two heretofore key players from each side? (Maybe the former is tucked away somewhere safe with “Chuck,” running comms?) We shall see!

As Luke Wilson, who plays Pat, recently told TVLine of the already-renewed superhero series’ freshman finale, “I think you’re going to learn a lot more about the Injustice Society’s plan — not just for Blue Valley, but for world domination. And there’s an epic battle at the end.

“In the best way, it’s a mixture of a big finale and also some closure,” he said, “but when you look at the overall picture, there’s still major turmoil underneath the surface.”

Secret Society of Second-Born Royals Trailer: Skylar Astin Guides Rebel Teens Into Battle on Disney+ This Summer https://briefnews.eu/secret-society-of-second-born-royals-trailer-skylar-astin-guides-rebel-teens-into-battle-on-disney-this-summer/ https://briefnews.eu/secret-society-of-second-born-royals-trailer-skylar-astin-guides-rebel-teens-into-battle-on-disney-this-summer/#respond Wed, 27 May 2020 21:32:10 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/secret-society-of-second-born-royals-trailer-skylar-astin-guides-rebel-teens-into-battle-on-disney-this-summer/

A first-born royal may inherit the throne, but on Disney+, it’s the younger sibling that rules. All that and more is explained in the just-released trailer for Secret Society of Second-Born Royals, a new movie premiering Friday, July 17. Watch:

The movie stars Peyton Elizabeth Lee (Andi Mack) as Sam, a “rebellious teenage royal who unknowingly develops superpowers from a genetic trait attributed only to second-borns of royal lineage. Second-in-line to the throne of the kingdom of Illyria, Sam constantly questions what it means to be royal and wants to create her own legacy. Unlike Sam’s picture-perfect older sister Eleanor (Fuller House‘s Ashley Liao) who will become the next queen, Sam would rather rock out with her bandmate and best friend Mike (The Walking Dead‘s Noah Lomax) at an illegal protest or ditch a royal engagement for a wild night out.”

But wait, there’s more! “Fed up with her daughter’s misbehavior, Queen Catherine (Daredevil‘s Elodie Yung) sends Sam to a summer boarding school where she and four other second-born royals — Tuma (This Is Us‘ Niles Fitch), Roxana (Home and Away‘s Olivia Deeble), January (Once Upon a Time‘s Isabella Blake Thomas) and Matteo (Raven’s Home‘s Faly Rakotohavana) — discover they have unique super-human abilities and are invited to join a secret society with a longstanding tradition of covertly keeping the peace. With a new sense of purpose and a little help from their Secret Society instructor James (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist‘s Skylar Astin), Sam and her fellow royal recruits must learn to harness their newfound powers and work together as a team before they can save the world.”
