As midterm-bolstered Democrats double down on special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into alleged 2016 ‘Russian collusion’, President Donald Trump is lashing out, calling the probe a “disgrace” and “total witch hunt.”
Last week’s midterm results mean Democrats will take control of the House of Representatives in January, and the party has already said it will use a “subpoena cannon” to target Trump and everyone around him. Trump fired back by denouncing the Mueller probe once again.
“The inner workings of the Mueller investigation are a total mess. They have found no collusion and have gone absolutely nuts,” Trump tweeted on Thursday morning.
“They are a disgrace to our Nation and don’t care how many lives the[y] ruin,” he added, calling it a “TOTAL WITCH HUNT LIKE NO OTHER IN AMERICAN HISTORY!”
The inner workings of the Mueller investigation are a total mess. They have found no collusion and have gone absolutely nuts. They are screaming and shouting at people, horribly threatening them to come up with the answers they want. They are a disgrace to our Nation and don’t…
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 15, 2018
….care how many lives the ruin. These are Angry People, including the highly conflicted Bob Mueller, who worked for Obama for 8 years. They won’t even look at all of the bad acts and crimes on the other side. A TOTAL WITCH HUNT LIKE NO OTHER IN AMERICAN HISTORY!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 15, 2018
Trump also argued that Mueller and his “gang of Democrat thugs” have destroyed the lives of his supporters while protecting Hillary Clinton, former FBI Director James Comey, and former FBI employees Lisa Page and Peter Strzok – who had an extramarital affair while working on the Clinton email probe and the original Trump-Russia investigation in 2016, exchanging text messages about how much they despised Trump and his supporters.
Universities will someday study what highly conflicted (and NOT Senate approved) Bob Mueller and his gang of Democrat thugs have done to destroy people. Why is he protecting Crooked Hillary, Comey, McCabe, Lisa Page & her lover, Peter S, and all of his friends on the other side?
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 15, 2018
Clinton’s claims that Trump “colluded” with Russia were first floated midway through the 2016 campaign, but took off into the stratosphere after she lost the election her campaign and the media were convinced she would win. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein – since then-AG Jeff Sessions had recused himself from the Russia probe – appointed Mueller in May 2017, after Trump fired Comey on Rosenstein’s own recommendation.
While Mueller’s probe has gone after anyone related to the Trump campaign, from former manager Paul Manafort and General Michael Flynn to volunteer adviser George Papadopoulos, he has provided precisely no evidence of any collusion with the Russians. Yet Trump’s critics are hoping that sooner or later he will discover something that would bring down the president they hate.
On Wednesday, the Senate refused to allow an expedited vote on legislation aimed at protecting Mueller’s investigation from the White House. Outgoing Senator Jeff Flake (R-Arizona) is now threatening to block all of Trump’s judicial nominations unless there is a vote on the matter. Democrats also organized protests around the country demanding Congress “protect Mueller” after Trump fired Sessions on November 7.
The last time Mueller’s investigation made headlines was August, when Manafort was convicted on several counts related to his lobbying work in the Ukraine. It was virtually absent from the media during the frantic midterms coverage, prompting speculation that it was either winding down or about to unveil a series of game-changing indictments. So far, it has done neither.

Don’t expect Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff to play nice with Microsoft anytime soon.
At an analyst event on Tuesday at his company’s annual Dreamforce users conference, in response to a question about whether the companies could ever work together again, Benioff slammed everything about the software giant from its Surface computers to its executive turnover.
In particular, Benioff charged that Microsoft is having little success in the customer relationship software (CRM) market — Salesforce’s core business — due to a lack of vision. Thanks to that, Microsoft officials are leaving the company to join Salesforce, he said.
“I like having competitors,” Benioff said. “But what I just get blown away with is how they just can’t keep, you know, that management team in place.”
Microsoft declined to respond to Benioff.
CNBC previously reported on his comments.
Salesforce and Microsoft have never been close; in fact, they’ve long been rivals in the CRM market. But the companies did appear to warm up toward each other two years ago when Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella gave a keynote speech at Dreamforce.
However, their cold war resumed last year when Microsoft beat out Salesforce to buy LinkedIn. And by all accounts, Benioff still isn’t over it.
Benioff began his rant Tuesday by noting that only three people in the analyst briefing had Surface laptops, a not-so-subtle dig at Microsoft’s lagging PC marketshare. Then, he took aim at Microsoft’s CRM business, saying the company only had 1% of the market.
AP
He then argued that Microsoft’s lack of success in CRM is due to what he called “Windows fever.” Microsoft’s developer events, including its flagship Build conference, are focused on programmers who make software for its core Windows operating system, Benioff said. But Microsoft doesn’t really demonstrate the same kind of enthusiasm for its CRM product or developers.
“I haven’t seen that in any other part of their business, other than the Windows API,” he said.
That last point was a not-so-subtle shot at Nadella, who has publicly tried to move Microsoft away on relying so much on Windows, in light of the still-shrinking PC industry.

President Donald Trump went after ESPN’s “SC6” broadcaster Jemele Hill on Twitter on Tuesday morning, blaming her for the sports network’s declining ratings.
“With Jemele Hill at the mike, it is no wonder ESPN ratings have ‘tanked,’ in fact, tanked so badly it is the talk of the industry!” tweeted Trump.
Trump has recently made a habit of wading into the politics of the NFL, which has caused backlash from players and commentators alike.
After Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones sided with Trump and said that players who make demonstrations during the national anthem should not be able to play, Hill suggested fans upset with Jones should boycott the advertisers who support Jones and the Cowboys.
“If you strongly reject what Jerry Jones said, the key is his advertisers. Don’t place the burden squarely on the players,” Hill tweeted.
ESPN then suspended Hill, saying she violated its social media policy for a second time and had “acknowledged letting her colleagues and company down.”
Previously Hill called Trump a white supremacist, though ESPN took no action against her at the time.
Earlier on Tuesday, Trump suggested the US should cut back on tax breaks for NFL teams.

The billboards and ads from Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s party campaign feature a smiling Soros with the words “Don’t let Soros have the last laugh.”
Soros – a Hungarian-born Jew who emigrated to the US and UK after World War II and made a fortune – has long been a vocal critic of Orban’s right-wing policies and supports open-borders for Europe.
Some of Orban’s campaign billboards have been vandalized with graffiti reading “stinking Jew.”
Michael Vachon, a spokesperson for Soros, has called the campaign “anti-European,” saying it misrepresents the billionaire’s views on migration.
“Last week the Fidesz-led government launched a nationwide billboard and television advertising campaign reminiscent of Europe’s darkest hours,” Vachon said, as quoted by Reuters.
“The Hungarian regime’s xenophobia and demonization of refugees are anti-European,” he said.
His comments come just days after Human Rights Watch (HRW) campaigner Lydia Gall stated that the billboards evoke memories of Nazi posters during the Second World War showing ‘The Laughing Jew.’
Meanwhile, Orban’s campaign has also been criticized by Jewish groups, including the Federation of Hungarian Jewish Congregations (Mazsihisz), which has called on the Hungarian prime minister to end it.
“This campaign, while not openly anti-Semitic, clearly has the potential to ignite uncontrolled emotions, including anti-Semitism,” the federation said last week, as quoted by Reuters.
Orban quickly responded in a letter posted by state news agency MTI on Friday, saying it was his duty to protect Hungarians – including the country’s some 100,000 Jews – from illegal migration.
“The person who uses his wealth, power, influence and a network of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) funded by him to settle millions of migrants in Hungary and the European Union puts our future in jeopardy,” Orban wrote.
“The billionaire speculator George Soros has made it quite clear repeatedly that this is precisely what he wants to do,” he said.
However, Vachon called this conclusion a “fantasy” on Tuesday.
“Soros’s actual position on migration is that the international community should provide more support to the developing countries that today host 89 percent of refugees and that Europe should accept several hundred thousand fully screened refugees through an orderly process of vetting and resettlement,” he said.
Orban has long proclaimed zero-tolerance for anti-Semitism and accused his opponents of playing the “anti-Semitism card.” His government maintains that the campaign ads have nothing to do with Soros’ heritage.
“The campaign has nothing to do with the heritage of George Soros or anyone else,” government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs said last week, adding that Orban had met with Jewish organizations on Thursday to reaffirm this fact.
Orban has often found himself in the spotlight for his views and actions, many of which are disapproved of by the officials of other EU member states.
He butted heads with fellow European leaders during the refugee crisis after fortifying his country’s southern border with a barbed wire fence. He has also rejected a quota scheme to distribute asylum seekers among EU countries that would force Hungary to take in more refugees.
Orban, who is seeking a third consecutive term as prime minister, will face re-election in 2018.

Kerry returned to Massachusetts, the state he represented in the US Senate for 28 years, to address graduates of the prestigious Cambridge school. As with most commencement speeches, he offered the new alumni some advice.
“I’m often asked what the secret is to have a real impact on government,” he said. “Well, it’s recently changed.”
“I used to say, either run for office or get a degree from Harvard Kennedy School. With this White House I’d say, buy Rosetta Stone and learn Russian,” he joked. The audience cheered.
Kerry, a graduate of Yale, Harvard’s rival in the Ivy League, made reference to one of Trump’s seemingly favorite phrases in another joke: “Let me be honest about it. When it was first reported that a Yale grad was going to be speaking at Harvard’s Kennedy School, the initial reaction was: Fake news!”
Despite jokes about Trump ‒ and maybe being called upon to make peace between White House press secretary Sean Spicer and the press ‒ Kerry buckled down to more serious attacks on the president.
“I did not come here to be partisan. Or political. Or pessimistic. But I need to tell the truth,” Kerry said. “And I refuse to self-consciously twist myself into a pretzel and put on a contrived mantle of bipartisanship that alleges both parties are to blame for what’s happening – or not happening.”
“And anyway, you wouldn’t buy it since so many of you have marched and protested to take a public stand on your own,” he added.
Going back to his earlier comments about fake news, Kerry noted that a democracy doesn’t just rely on free speech, “but it relies even more on the speech being truthful. It is the truth after all that sets us free. And the truth is – no, this is not a normal time.”
Kerry then listed Trump’s actions that the former secretary of state deemed “not normal,” such as attacking judges, threatening journalists and firing the director of the FBI. “And it’s not normal that when you close your eyes and listen to the news, too often the political back and forth in America sounds too much like it does in the kinds of countries that the State Department warns Americans not to travel to.”
Yet Kerry also expressed optimism that Trump would not be allowed to destroy the US.
“I’m old enough to have seen a movie like this, maybe a time or two, and that’s why, about this part of the story at least, I’m actually more of an optimist,” he said, noting that Senator Joseph McCarthy and President Richard Nixon were both brought down through “the inherent strength of our Constitution and the courage of individual Senators, regardless of party,” who “empowered America to find its way out of what President [Gerald] Ford called a ‘national nightmare.’”
The only true crisis that could not be solved in a way the founding fathers envisioned in the Constitution was the Civil War, he said, citing President Abraham Lincoln’s quote that slavery would only be resolved by the sword.
“You know what, I don’t think even [President] Andrew Jackson could’ve stopped that one,” Kerry joked, referring to Trump’s “bizarre” assertion that the seventh president would have prevented the Civil War, which began 16 years after his death.
Kerry also focused a significant amount of his speech on the effect of technology on jobs, noting that “technology ‒ not trade” is the reason the US “hemorrhaged” manufacturing jobs in the first decade of the 21st Century.
“The worst thing I could do is insult your intelligence by pretending that it’s smooth sailing for America and the world,” he said, later adding, “I’m not surprised that a lot of folks want to stop the world and get off.”
Knowing that people are losing jobs due to technology isn’t enough, and the fact that “the same technology that eliminated your job also gave you a smartphone that lets you binge-watch a future that’s out of reach for you and everyone you grew up with” is “zero comfort” for those people, Kerry said.
He glossed over the fact that, during the 2016 presidential election, Trump was able to reach those voters in states that had previously voted Democratic, a major reason the Republican was able to flip states like Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Instead, Kerry noted that the coming technological changes will make the unsolved jobs crisis in the Rust Belt states of West Virginia and Ohio “look like child’s play.”
“And what concerns me is that if our institutions can’t build consensus and respond to the demand of Americans for jobs today – how are we ever going to do it in a time when artificial intelligence and robotics kick in and five times that number of jobs disappear twice as fast?” he said.
Kerry did offer some praise for Trump however, complimenting the president’s speech in Saudi Arabia on Sunday that called on Muslim nations to “drive out” Islamic extremists, though he argued that education and jobs are the answer to combating terrorism.
At the end of his speech, the former secretary of state urged the graduates to fight for democracy in America and abroad.
Kerry was not the only former Obama administration official to address Harvard grads this commencement season. Former Vice President Joe Biden and former Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates, who was fired by Trump, also spoke at Harvard campus events last week.
