  • New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman wrote that the gold bars were sent to Trump Tower.
  • Trump didn't know how to handle the bars and it is unclear what happened to them, per Haberman.

During his days as a businessman in New York, former President Donald Trump was once paid with a pile of gold bars in lieu of cash. 

This anecdote was shared in a new book by New York Times journalist Maggie Haberman titled "Confidence Man: The Making of Donald Trump and the Breaking of America." According to an excerpt provided exclusively to CNN, this odd form of payment was given to Trump to cover the price of leasing a garage at the General Motors building in New York, which Trump bought in 1998. 

Per CNN, Haberman wrote that Trump didn't know how to handle the dozens of gold bars sent to him. They were eventually wheeled up to his apartment at Trump Tower, though it's unclear what happened with the gold bars afterward.

Haberman also recalled in the excerpt seen by CNN that Trump was asked about the gold bars and responded by calling it a "fantasy question."

A representative at Trump's post-presidential press office did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

The account from Haberman adds to the list of odd revelations about Trump's past business dealings that have emerged in recent months.

This month, for example, an excerpt from a book by New York Times reporter David Enrich — titled "Servants of the Damned: Giant Law Firms, Donald Trump and the Corruption of Justice" — recounted how Trump once tried to pay an attorney $ 2 million in legal fees with the deed to a stallion. 

According to Enrich, Trump — who was then a real-estate businessman — had failed to pay his bills. When confronted by his irate lawyer, Trump t pulled out a "deed to a horse" and told the lawyer that it was "more valuable" than the fees he owed. 

Meanwhile, Trump and his three adult children are facing a $ 250 million civil lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Leticia James. The suit seeks to bar the Trump family from conducting business in New York and accuses the former president of inflating his net worth by billions.

Valve has removed Roman gladiator sim Domina from Steam after the developer used a recent patch notes post as an opportunity to rant against transgender people and the idea of changing your public gender identity.

Dolphin Barn Interactive’s v 1.3.25 patch notes for the game, published on Wednesday, asks for “respect” as the game changes from its “deadname” of “Domina” to the rebranded “Dominus,” which has supposedly undergone a “sex change.” The thinly veiled post gets more direct as it goes on to demean a well-known trans streamer and asks players to “stop destroying the innocence of children by lying to them about basic biology.”

The Steam store page for Domina says the game is no longer available “at the request of the publisher.” But in a post on a newly created Gab account, Dolphin Barn Interactive’s Nicholas Gorissen said that is “incorrect” and that “Steam cancelled us” over the developer’s views on trans people.

The advert is the latest in the brand’s “You’re not you when you’re hungry” campaign.

He follows comedian Rowan Atkinson and actress Joan Collins who have played a famished martial arts master and locker room footballer, respectively, in previous ads.

Snickers global brand director Dale Green said: “When we developed the rap battle concept we knew Elton John would be perfect to help to bring this to life. His unique blend of music, style and humour is instantly recognisable around the world.”

The research, undertaken by a group of scientists, was presented at the European Society of Cardiology conference in Munich.

Dark chocolate and cocoa intakes are already associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular mortality.

But no prior research had been published on the relationship between chocolate intake and heart failure, prompting the group of scientists to undertake a study investigating the association between the two.

The scientists identified five prospective studies with over 575,000 individuals and over 24,000 heart failure events.

Through the study they discovered that moderate chocolate consumption – of one to three servings of chocolate a month – was associated with a 23 per cent lower risk of heart failure than no regular chocolate intake.

This is due to flavonoids – natural compounds found in cocoa – which boost blood vessel health and help to reduce inflammation.

However, high chocolate consumption – of one or more servings of chocolate every day – was associated with a 17% higher risk of heart failure than no regular chocolate intake.

“The present study confirms the association of high chocolate consumption with the risk of heart failure. In contrast, moderate chocolate consumption may reduce the risk of heart failure,” said the study.

“I believe that chocolate is an important dietary source of flavonoids which are associated with reducing inflammation and increasing good cholesterol,” added lead researcher Dr Chayakrit Krittanawong.

“However, chocolate may have high levels of saturated fats. I would say moderate dark chocolate consumption is good for health.”

Heart failure means the heart is unable to pump blood around the body properly. It usually occurs because the heart has become too weak or stiff.

It can occur at any age, but is most common in older people.

Heart failure is a long-term condition that tends to get gradually worse over time. It can’t usually be cured, but the symptoms can often be controlled for many years.

The main symptoms of heart failure are: breathlessness after activity or at rest,

feeling tired most of the time and finding exercise exhausting, and swollen ankles and legs.

Some people also experience other symptoms, such as a persistent cough, a fast heart rate, and dizziness.

Symptoms can develop quickly, known as acute heart failure, or gradually over weeks or months, known as chronic heart failure.

Conditions that can lead to heart failure include: coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, heart rhythm problems, damage or other problems with the heart valves, congenital heart disease, and cardiomyopathy – which is conditions affecting the heart muscle.

Sometimes anaemia, excessive alcohol consumption, an overactive thyroid, or high pressure in the lungs can also lead to heart failure.

“It is important to remember is that, regardless of any potential benefits, chocolate is high in fat and calories and should be enjoyed only in moderation,” the NHS said.

“A diet high in fat and calories is known to increase the risk of obesity, heart disease and stroke, rather than decreasing it.”

Following several incidents in which US military bases and patrol routes have been compromised by fitness trackers used by soldiers deployed to sensitive locations abroad, the Pentagon banned using any gadgets that can pinpoint the location of US personnel across the globe.

“Effective immediately, Defense Department personnel are prohibited from using geolocation features and functionality on government and nongovernment-issued devices, applications and services while in locations designated as operational areas,” Pentagon spokesman Army Col. Robert Manning III told reporters.

Fitness trackers, smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, has now been declared a “significant risk” to the Department of Defense (DoD) staff, and can only be used if the Combatant Commanders approve their necessity for the individual mission after conducting a risk assessment. Otherwise, the Pentagon warned, using gadgets can potentially create “unintended security consequences and increased risk to the joint force and mission,” states the ‘DoD Policy on the Use of Geolocation-Capable Devices, Applications, and Services in Deployed Areas’.

While the ban will affect the US overseas operations, the personnel working at the Pentagon will still be allowed to use the devices.

Prior to announcing the new Pentagon policy, the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) advised the US soldiers to be vigilant of their smart devices revealing their locations to third parties.

“Don’t Let the Enemy Track You!” the advice mandates.

“GPS-enabled devices make it possible to track individuals as they move while walking, running, or in vehicles. This data by itself may not reveal much; however, when the collected data is aggregated, it could be possible to pick out military installations or troop movements and patterns in places such as the Middle East or other sensitive locations,”DISA’s guidelines explain.

The need to deal with the arising security threat from the endless list of modern-day gadgets with geolocation capabilities which can expose locations and troop numbers, became evident earlier this year, after San Francisco-based startup, Strava, published a global heat map data of exercise routines, which exposed the locations of US military facilities across the world.

The YouTube desktop site was designed for 16:9 video, with videos in any other aspect ratio—most commonly 4:3 for old TV material or 9:16 for vertical smartphone video—padded with black bars until they fit the 16:9 box. In a change that Google is currently rolling out, those black bars are now being scrapped, and the video box will instead take on the aspect ratio of the content it’s showing.

For 4:3 content, this means a bigger picture. It will be both wider and taller, pushing the title, description, and comments further down the page. For vertical video, the benefits are less apparent—empty space will open up on each side of the video—but even there, removal of the black bars means that narrow browser windows are less likely to cause the video to be sized down. Even 16:9 video is getting a little larger due to reduced margins and white space.
