Barrett a 'cut above' in Duke's Canadian tour finale against McGill https://briefnews.eu/r-j-barrett-a-cut-above-in-dukes-canadian-tour-finale-against-mcgill/ https://briefnews.eu/r-j-barrett-a-cut-above-in-dukes-canadian-tour-finale-against-mcgill/#respond Mon, 20 Aug 2018 12:42:34 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/r-j-barrett-a-cut-above-in-dukes-canadian-tour-finale-against-mcgill/

R.J. Barrett didn't disappoint in his third and final showing on Duke University's exhibition tour of Canada.

The 18-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., had 23 points and 11 assists in the Blue Devils' 103-58 dismantling of McGill University on Sunday.

R.J. Barrett and Duke's tour of Canada ends on a high note with a big 103-58 win over McGill helped by a triple double from Barrett. 1:36

Zion Williamson shouldered the scoring load for Duke, after Barrett led the way in the first two games, putting up a game-high 36 points along with 13 rebounds.

Alex Paquin was the only McGill player in double figures with 29 points.

Barrett, Williamson a 'cut above'

Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski said the Redmen came out like they "thought they were going to win," but their skill deficit was too much to overcome as Barrett and Williamson were a "cut above everyone who's on the court."

"We obviously have more talent, but we're young. R.J. and Zion are 18. Alex Paquin is 24, he's really good and he's a man. That's one of the things when we get to NCAA play, we have to beat teams that have juniors, seniors, or even graduate transfers. So that balances sometimes the talent aspect," said Krzyzewski.

"Our guys didn't fall into that trap, I thought they shared the ball. R.J. had 10 assists. They share it. The first half, we really had to play well. In the second half, we pulled away. I thought we played team ball throughout and really kept up our defence."

Barrett spreads the wealth

Barrett said McGill was trying to shut him down offensively, so he decided to focus on distributing the ball.

"It's just the ability to read the game and they were trying to take away from me scoring," he said.

"I was playing against one of my former coaches who knows what I do, so he was trying to limit me from scoring, which left my teammates wide open and I was able to find them today," he added, referring to McGill head coach David DeAveiro, who coached Barrett for two years with the Canadian national cadet team.

Krzyzewski said that it was Barrett's well-rounded game and good attitude that made him such an appealing prospect, and these traits have become even more apparent since he's joined Duke.

"He's great in all aspects. When we recruit a kid, we look for talent, a good student and character. He's off the charts in all three," he said.

"He comes from a family that has amazing character. He's represented your country at different every level and he's done that with class, dignity and talent. He's way ahead. I've found him to be more of a competitor. He does not like to lose. He's an outstanding defender and he can lock you up. He's a leader and a great kid to be around. I love him. I loved him before this trip, but now that we've had nine practices and three games, we know our guys a little bit better. He's a stud in every way."

Mature, battle-tested Barrett ready for spotlight of Duke basketball https://briefnews.eu/mature-battle-tested-barrett-ready-for-spotlight-of-duke-basketball/ https://briefnews.eu/mature-battle-tested-barrett-ready-for-spotlight-of-duke-basketball/#respond Sun, 19 Aug 2018 11:15:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mature-battle-tested-barrett-ready-for-spotlight-of-duke-basketball/ MISSISSAUGA, Ont., — Canadian basketball phenom R.J. Barrett has seemingly always played at a level ahead of most guys his age.

As a 17-year-old, the six-foot-seven swingman won tournament MVP honours en route to Canadian gold at the FIBA U19 Basketball World Cup in July 2017.

And this past June, the 18-year-old fit right in during his first call-up to the senior national team.

So it should be no surprise that Barrett — after reclassifying to attend college a year early — shone in his Duke Blue Devils debut with a game-high 34 and 35 points respectively in their first two pre-season games at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre in Mississauga, just minutes from where he grew up.

"It's just [about] being competitive. I think I am really good. I think I belong here," said Barrett.

Barrett's head coach Mike Krzyzewski has been impressed by his basketball intelligence and engagement on the floor. (Chicco Nacion/CBC Sports)

Legendary head coach Mike Krzyzewski could sense Barrett's oozing confidence before he even saw the Canadian play in person. Barrett left quite the impression on the hall of famer just from his game tape at last year's U19 tournament.

"He's kind of old school in the fact that he [played like he] was older. He had such a winning mentality and it translated to the guys playing with him," said the longtime Duke head coach. "I loved his strong face — how he led his team — he just looked older and in command … he's way ahead of his years as far as maturity."

Barrett 'sees game at a higher level'

ESPN lead college basketball analyst Jay Bilas says Barrett "sees the game at a higher level."

The Mississauga, Ont., native's excellent footwork gives him options — like the euro step — when attacking the basket to create separation from his defenders and different angles to score.

While Barrett provides defensive versatility and length with his six-foot-ten wingspan, Bilas was also impressed with his unselfishness and playmaking skills on the floor.

Despite Barrett's meagre four assists over the pair of games, it wasn't as if the intent to share the rock was missing.

On one occasion against the University of Toronto, Barrett was able to draw the defence in one direction with a ball fake, leaving a teammate open in the corner for a three-pointer. There were plenty of other times in which Barrett simply used his eyes to direct his teammates towards the basket or in fellow freshman Zion Williamson's case, an incoming alley-oop feed.

"Me and him just have a really great connection. We can make eye contact from different sides of the court and just know that we can run it. Even if the crowd doesn't think we're going to throw it, we're gonna throw it," Williamson says.

Tight-knit group

The closeness between Barrett and Williamson is evident. They've created their own custom handshake, roomed together for the summer, and speak regularly through their group chat with teammates Tre Jones and Cam Reddish.

Together, the four are one of the most hyped freshman classes since the University of Michigan's infamous "Fab Five," whom Krzyzewski likes to remind reporters were beaten by his squad in the 1992 national championship game.

Barrett, Williamson, and Reddish were ranked Nos. 1, 2, and 3 respectively by ESPN for the class of 2018 while Jones slots as the second-best point guard at No.17 overall.

Throughout the summer and throughout Duke's Canadian pre-season tour, their every move has been followed and it's been comforting for Barrett to know that he's not alone.

"I've always played with high-level competition my whole life. But to be on a team with Zion, Cam, and Tre — guys of that calibre — we all kind of get it," Barrett says. "We're all going through the same thing. It's great to have guys like that to help you out."

Individually secure

On the court, Bilas believes the four frosh's multidimensional games fit well into Coach K's style of positionless basketball.

But it's their own self-confidence that could prove even more vital.

"They're not concerned about somebody else usurping or nudging them aside. They're very secure in who they are so they're quick to be able to make one another better," Bilas says.

While each freshman was "the man" at his high school, each committed to Duke knowing the spotlight is shared.

"It doesn't bother me at all because this is what I signed for. You don't come to Duke thinking you're about to get 30 shots a game," Williamson says. "It's whoever is feeling it … Coach K has done this before with Team U.S.A. so we all trust him and how he can play us [best]."

Williamson, above, is happy to share the court with Barrett and says they've developed a brotherly bond. (Chicco Nacion/CBC Sports)

Krzyzewski is no stranger to managing such talent, having coached the U.S. men's basketball team through their recent run of three-straight Olympic golds.

With every recruit, the 71-year-old makes it a point to be honest and upfront regardless of whether they choose to attend Duke. Krzyzewski believes doing so establishes belief in his vision and from that, a trust is established.

Before the playbook is even touched, Krzyzewski holds a team supper — which he refers to as a values meeting — outlining exactly what it means to put on a Duke jersey.

"What are the values of our program? [We] talk about them whether they be integrity, trust, selfless service, loyalty before you get to an offence or defence and it's worked with me, not just with Duke but with the U.S. team," Krzyzewski says. "We just don't play for [Duke], we are [Duke]. If you believe, you have a better chance of doing well."

In his short time at Duke, Barrett appears to already have an understanding of this.

"He's been around a long time so he knows a lot about the game," Barrett says. "He just has a lot of knowledge and I like learning from him every day."

R.J. Barrett leads Canada to victory in national team debut https://briefnews.eu/r-j-barrett-leads-canada-to-victory-in-national-team-debut/ https://briefnews.eu/r-j-barrett-leads-canada-to-victory-in-national-team-debut/#respond Sat, 23 Jun 2018 13:20:36 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/r-j-barrett-leads-canada-to-victory-in-national-team-debut/

Teenager R. J. Barrett scored 16 points and had a pair of assists in his first game with the national men's basketball team as Canada defeated a team from China 97-62 Friday night in the opening game of the Pacific Rim Basketball Classic.

There were some questions about how Barrett would adapt to playing against bigger and stronger senior players, but the game had barely started before the 18-year-old from Mississauga, Ont., showed the crowd at Rogers Arena he belonged on the court.

On the opening possession the six-foot-seven guard moved the ball down the crowd, drove the basketball and scored on a falling layup. Later in the quarter he had the fans on their feet with a two-handed dunk on a fast break.

Barrett looked calm and in control whenever he had the ball. He moved the ball well, directed players where he wanted them to go and was comfortable on defence.

After attending high school in Florida, Barrett will play NCAA basketball at Duke University this year and there already is speculation he could be the top pick in the 2019 NBA draft.

Canada controls game from start

Canada controlled the game from the start, leading 52-31 at half time and 83-48 after three quarters. Tempers flared in the fourth quarter when Chinese coach Feng Du and Canada's Anthony Bennett were both ejected from the game.

Canada opened the game with a lineup that included Barrett plus NBA players like seven-foot centre Kelly Olynyk of the Miami Heat plus forwards Dillion Brooks of the Memphis Grizzlies and Dwight Powell of the Dallas Mavericks.

After starting Olynyk, from Kamloops, B.C, was used sparingly scoring four points in 10 minutes of play.

Chris Boucher, a six-foot-10 forward from Montreal who was released earlier Friday by the NBA champion Golden State Warriors, was named player of the game. He had 17 points and five blocked shots.

Canada and China will play again Sunday at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria.

Warmup for World Cup qualifying

The two-game series is a warmup as Canada prepares for World Cup qualifying matches against the Dominican Republic on Friday at Toronto's Ricoh Coliseum and the U.S. Virgin Islands July 2 at Ottawa's TD Place.

Canada has a 3-1 record in Group D of the American Qualifiers which also consists of the Bahamas, Dominican Republic and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Each team faces the other three teams on a home and away basis with the top three teams from each group advancing to the second round.

Canada can secure first place in the group by beating the Dominican Republic by at least 12 points and scoring a win over the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The next round of qualifying continues with games in September, November and February 2019.

The last time Canada qualified for the World Cup was 2010.

CBD OIL hit UK shelves at the beginning of the year, with Holland & Barrett being the first retailer to stock it. But what is the strength and benefits of the product and are doctors recommending it?

CBD oil, or cannabidiol, has been available at Holland and Barrett since the start of the year, proving popular among the general public.

The retailer has been selling the oil for £19.99 and over the last four weeks sales have increased by 37 per cent in the last four weeks.

Because of its success, the high street health shop is set to launch four more CBD oil products next month including bigger bottles and CBD capsules.

The oil is said to be able to treat all manner of problems. At the end of last year, a World Health Organisation report revealed it may help successfully treat symptoms relating to Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, MS, pain, anxiety, depression, cancer and diabetic complications.

A spokesperson from Holland & Barrett said “We have been surprised at the success and popularity of CBD Oil since launch. We knew that there were numerous trends surfacing around this liquid but we didn’t expect to see sales increase this dramatically.

“We are constantly looking to bring, new and innovative products to market that help our customers. It is great to see in this instance that we can help with the demand. We also want our shoppers to know that we listen to their needs and hope to eventually increase the CBD range to keep up with the growing popularity.”

But is the oil safe and recommended by doctors? Dr Andrew Thorber, Chief Medical Officer at Now Patient, gave Express.co.uk his advice.

Can it create any form of intoxication?

CBD oil is extracted from the resin glands on cannabis buds and flowers.

It’s a type of cannabinoid which are the chemicals naturally found in marijuana plants, and it’s usually mixed with a carrier oil, like MCT (a form of coconut oil).

There are different variations in strength available from Holland and Barrett – 2.75 per cent to 5 per cent, but while CBD oil comes from the cannabis plant, CBD does not create any form of intoxication. Another cannabinoid, THC, causes this, but this substance is illegal in the UK.

Is it a good remedy for diabetes or cancer?

Dr Thornber said: “It is still early days with research into CBD Oil and the potential to help patients suffering with Diabetes and Cancer, however there are findings to indicate Cannabis Oil can have improved health benefits for people with certain ailments particularly Cancer.”

What medical advice should be given to patients thinking about taking it?

Dr Thornber said he recommends taking it with caution. This isn’t prescribed by a GP or Pharmacist at present, as we still don’t know the full side-effects.

He added: “I would not personally recommend this as a medical practitioner.

“I would always recommend anyone wanting to take any medicine that isn’t registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council to do so with caution and almost always have a chat with your Pharmacist or GP at your next visit to take their advice.

“The individual needs of the patient vary and what works for one person, may not work for another and this is not currently classed as an official medication which can be prescribed.”

This week Charlotte Caldwell, whose 12-year-old son Billy has a severe form of epilepsy that can give him up to 100 seizures a day, was stopped by officials at Heathrow after trying to “openly smuggle” illegal cannabis oil into the country from Canada.

Billy’s medicine was confiscated under orders from Home Office minister Nick Hurd.

Like father, like son: R.J. and Rowan Barrett https://briefnews.eu/like-father-like-son-r-j-and-rowan-barrett/ https://briefnews.eu/like-father-like-son-r-j-and-rowan-barrett/#respond Sun, 06 May 2018 16:42:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/like-father-like-son-r-j-and-rowan-barrett/ Canadian basketball phenom R.J. Barrett’s trophy case is running out of room.

This year alone, the senior at Florida’s Montverde Academy has been dubbed the No. 1 prospect in the 2018 recruiting class, a McDonald’s All-American, the Naismith Prep Player of the Year and the Gatorade National Player of the Year.

R.J. Barrett is projected to be the best basketball player out of Canada since Andrew Wiggins and is expected to be Canada’s third first overall pick. Some have even gone so far to say he will approach the achievement of five-time NBA All-Star Steve Nash, who happens to be his godfather.

“I don’t think it really has sunk in yet … I had so many goals and I was able to achieve them and I was really happy but there’s so much more that I have to do,” R.J. said in an interview with CBC’s Dwight Drummond.

Perhaps his biggest accomplishment to date is leading Canada to a historic win over the U.S. at the FIBA U19 World Cup, before beating Italy to win Canada’s first ever gold medal in international competition.

“I mean everything that’s happened this year has been great, I enjoyed the ride, but it really all started when, you know, playing for my country,” he said.

He’s decided to go to Duke University, after being offered several athletic scholarships, and could declare for the NBA draft after one year of college.

Like father, like son

The 17-year-old, who hails from Toronto, may go by R.J., but his full name Rowan Barrett Jr. carries a lot of weight.

His dad, Rowan, is a Canadian Basketball icon who played alongside Steve Nash on the team that qualified for the 2000 Sydney Olympics – the last national team to play in the Olympic Games.

Rowan also had a lengthy professional career in Europe, where R.J. spent much of his childhood watching his dad play and attempting to keep up.

“He would always be out on the court after the games, shooting, you know, coming in after practice,” said Rowan.

“The great thing was my professional team also had a club team at the lower ages and, while I was playing with the men, he was playing with the children.

“Same uniform as Dad, and everything else. He had the same number. It was good early beginnings for him.”

‘He would demand it’

Despite his success on the court, Rowan never pushed R.J. to follow in his footsteps.

“You would think because Rowan played professionally and had a chance at the NBA and played all over the world that he would push R.J., but R.J. would ask for it, he would demand it,” said Terry Upshaw, one of R.J.’s coaches.

“When I first met [the family] R.J. already had plans, he already had his dream board, he already knew his dream schools, he already knew his plan when a lot of eight-, nine-, 10-year-olds have no idea.”

Rowan said he didn’t know his son would be a star, but said R.J. made his intentions clear at a young age.

“He said, Dad, I want to make the Hall of Fame, I want to be an NBA champion, I want to be on the NBA All-Star team,'” Rowan said.

Rowan said he tried to temper his son, who was 11 at the time. He told him it would be a lot of work, a lot of early mornings and long days at the gym.

R.J. said he was ready, so father and son took out a whiteboard and wrote a list of goals.

“His first goal was like ‘by the time I’m 13, Dad I want to be number one in Canada; by the time I’m 14, I want to be number one in Canada and top 10 in the United States,'” said Rowan.

“And by 13, he was number one in the U.S. and he’s been ever since.”

‘He’s done a lot more’

Although he is number one, R.J. has remained grounded – in large part due to mom and dad.

“It’s kinda hard [to get over confident] when your dad’s an Olympian …and you realize his jersey’s on the wall right there, he’s done a lot more,” said R.J.

It is clear that dad has an influence on R.J.’s path to becoming a superstar, and their bond is undeniable.

CBC’s Dwight Drummond, left, sat down with R.J. Barrett and his father Rowan. (CBC News)

“He’s at every game. If you’re watching me, I look over at him a lot. He makes a certain face and I know what it is. We have that connection off the court too. He’s a loving father, always there for my brother and me.”

Naturally it’s a bond that sometimes comes with pressure, and constant references of being Rowan Barrett’s son – but instead of cracking under the notoriety, R.J. thrives off of it.

“I think [R.J.] led the league in scoring because that’s what it is as a journeyman basketball player and he wanted to be better than his father and he knew it was going to take work,” said Upshaw.

The NBA is a clear goal for the young Barrett, but his next goal is to surpass his senior.

“[I want to] surpass him and be my own person too,” said the teen. “[One day people are] gonna be like ‘oh that’s R.J.’s dad.'”

Players push for Barrett extension https://briefnews.eu/players-push-for-barrett-extension/ https://briefnews.eu/players-push-for-barrett-extension/#respond Mon, 16 Oct 2017 21:58:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/players-push-for-barrett-extension/ ONE of Manly’s biggest stars has backed Trent Barrett to lead the club long-term, saying the Sea Eagles should move quickly to keep the coach beyond the contract which runs out at the end of next season.

NSW and Australian representative forward Jake Trbojevic lamented Manly’s late-season form and exit from the finals but said Barrett was the man to lead the club forward.

“It was disappointing but where we’d come from the last few years it was exciting to play finals footy,” Trbojevic said.

“It only makes us more hungry for next year.

“(Barrett is) a good coach on the field and off the field he’s a great coach for club culture. I hope they sign him up long-term.”

Trbojevic’s wishes are likely to be granted, with Sea Eagles chairman Scott Penn telling foxsports.com.au a deal to keep Barrett on the Northern Beaches until the end of 2020 wasn’t far away.

Trbojevic was speaking to Big Sports Breakfast from Suva in Fiji where the Kangaroos squad has been preparing for its World Cup campaign.

He said the chance to join Mal Meninga’s Kangaroos was the perfect chance to learn from some of rugby league’s great players.

“I’m just really enjoying it and any opportunity you get to play for the Kangaroos you take with both hands,” he said.

“It’s going to be a great experience and a real learning curve for me and my brother (Tom Trbojevic) and we’re just looking to soak up as much as we can.”

The Kangaroos begin their World Cup campaign against England in Melbourne on October 27.

A federal judge in San Francisco has denied the FBI’s attempt to dismiss a lawsuit brought by a local activist who raised money for Barrett Brown. Brown is a journalist who was released from prison last year.

As Ars reported previously, in April 2014 Brown took a plea deal admitting guilt on three charges: “transmitting a threat in interstate commerce,” interfering with the execution of a search warrant, and being “accessory after the fact in the unauthorized access to a protected computer.” Brown was arrested in 2012 when he shared a link related to Anonymous’ hack of Stratfor.

During Brown’s incarceration, activist Kevin Gallagher solicited over $ 40,000 in donations on the WePay website. However, he soon found that the FBI had successfully subpoenaed WePay to obtain information about the myriad donors whose identities Gallagher had pledged to keep secret.
