In a presentation at the Barclays 2017 Global Automotive Conference, General Motors CEO Mary Barra assured investors that the company’s next generation of electric vehicles will offer more than added driving range and model variety—they also will generate profits for GM.

“Our mission for electrification is simple,” Barra declared. “We are working to provide desirable, obtainable, and profitable vehicles that deliver a range of over 300 miles.”

General Motors has already pushed electric-vehicle boundaries—in terms of driving range for the dollar—with its 238-mile Chevrolet Bolt EV. But the company reportedly loses thousands on each Bolt EV sold even at its full $ 37,495 list price (before the potentially threatened $ 7500 federal EV tax credit).

GM previously announced plans for 20 new zero-emission vehicles by 2023 (globally), including two within the next 18 months. In its Barclays presentation, GM included an illustration of its “future electrification bandwidth,” pointing to variants that would include a low-roof car, a lineup of SUVs and crossovers ranging up to seven-passenger models, and a couple of different vans. The new platform allows a larger footprint and lower height, with improved DC fast charging (likely 150 kW or higher) planned.

GM future EVThe two small crossovers arriving in the near term will share some components with the Bolt EV. One of those (above) was shown in the presentation and anticipated to be specifically for China. Another one, for the North American market, could be a strong contender against the upcoming Tesla Model Y as well as anticipated EVs from Ford, Volvo, Hyundai, and Volkswagen, among others.

Modularity and Economies of Scale

Improvements, Barra said, stem from GM’s all-new battery platform, which would provide more packaging flexibility (via flexible modular battery-pack configurations) at a lower cost, providing a “building-block approach” to future EV development. Battery energy density will rise, while per-cell cost is expected to drop from a current $ 145 to less than $ 100 per kilowatt-hour in the Bolt. GM plans to assemble these battery packs at scale in both China and the United States.

GM sees these strategies adding up to a total cost reduction of more than 30 percent—enough to achieve profitability even while attaining price parity between electric and gasoline vehicles. “That profitability has to be at the cost of that segment, that vehicle in today’s market,” said Barra.

GM plans to fund the new EV and autonomous-vehicle development as part of an $ 8 billion investment. It foresees its own global EV volume hitting a million vehicles in 2026, with manufacturing capacity reconfigured for growth in China.

Economies of scale come in convergence and shared development among electrification, autonomous-technology, and shared-mobility programs. Barra stressed that GM’s electric-vehicle platform will provide the foundation for self-driving technologies, car sharing, and ride sharing—and that the company believes all fully autonomous vehicles should be electric. In its work with Cruise Automation, a Silicon Valley company it acquired last year, GM is already into the third iteration of its autonomous test vehicles after just 14 months.

About-Face on Fast-Charger Support

Barra’s presentation also marked a an abrupt change in direction for the company’s approach to DC fast-charging, which can restore most of a battery charge in well under an hour. While in the past GM has seen this technology as ancillary and shrugged off any plan to build charging stations—a position nearly the polar opposite of what other automakers (such as Tesla with its Supercharger network) have pursued—Barra delivered a quite different position while laying out the company’s EV push.

“We are going to commit and play a role in accelerating the rollout of additional DC fast chargers, and we will work to look at what is the right EV charging infrastructure across the country and in other countries. We will either partner, incentivize, or invest to make sure that this customer pain point is removed,” she said. “Because it’s a customer issue, it’s an issue that General Motors will address.”

There are currently more than 1100 DC fast chargers in the United States in the CCS format that GM vehicles can use, according to the automaker, and that’s already a 42 percent gain over last year.

“As we’re removing range anxiety, the charging infrastructure becomes the issue,” Barra said, noting that the company plans to work with various charging companies and organizations, including Volkswagen’s Electrify America, and incorporating charging data gathered through its Maven car-sharing operations.

U.S. President Donald Trump disbanded two high-profile business advisory councils on Wednesday after corporate CEOs quit in protest at his remarks blaming violence in Charlottesville, Va., not only on white nationalists but also on the protesters who opposed them.

General Motors CEO Mary Barra had been a part of Trump’s Strategic and Policy Forum prior to its disbanding. In a statement, she said, “General Motors is about unity and inclusion and so am I.” Despite policy disagreements in the past, the GM CEO remained a member of the committee to keep “a seat at an important table.”

Barra added, “Recent events, particularly those in Charlottesville, Va., and its aftermath, require that we come together as a country and reinforce values and ideals that unite us — tolerance, inclusion and diversity –- and speak against those which divide us – racism, bigotry and any politics based on ethnicity.”

Trump announced the break-up of the advisory councils after 3M Co’s Inge Thulin became the latest of several chief executives to leave Trump’s American Manufacturing Council, and the president’s Strategic and Policy Forum broke up of its own will.

“Rather than putting pressure on the businesspeople of the Manufacturing Council & Strategy & Policy Forum, I am ending both,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

A parade of prominent Republicans and U.S. ally Britain rebuked Trump after his Tuesday comments on Saturday’s bloodshed further enveloped his seven-month-old presidency in controversy and paralyzed his policy aims.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Ohio Governor John Kasich, Senator Lindsey Graham, former U.S. presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush and others took aim at the remarks by Trump that worsened deep divisions within a Republican Party that controls both chambers of Congress and the White House.

Trump’s remarks on Tuesday were a more vehement reprisal of his initial response to Saturday’s bloodshed around a white nationalist rally. In his comments at a heated news conference in New York on Tuesday, Trump said “there is blame on both sides” of the violence in Charlottesville, and that there were “very fine people” on both sides.

•The GM CEO has enough strength to execute a major deal by selling Opel.

•GM’s overarching agenda now is to maximize its return on invested capital.

•Barra is in a position to be the best GM leader since Alfred Sloan.

Since the news broke last week that General Motors is pursuing a sale of its European division — Opel in Germany and Vauxhall in the UK — to France’s PSA Group, the deal has rapidly accelerated.

It now looks as if GM will be shedding Opel/Vauxhall, a move it contemplated and rejected in 2009, when the automaker was coming of bankruptcy and streamlining its operations.

The deal died back then not because it wasn’t a good idea — GM has been struggling to make Opel, a brand it’s controlled since before World War II, profitable in Europe’s messy auto market. Rather, the GM board was concerned that an acquisition by Magna, a part supplier and contract car manufacturer, alongside a Russian bank would compromise GM’s technology.

It’s possible that GM wanted to make this move sooner, but CEO Mary Barra took the reigns at the automaker just as a massive and deadly ignition-switch recall was roiling the company. The time simply wasn’t right for a major deal.

But Barra is now firmly ensconced in her leadership role, having negotiated the recall and assembled perhaps the best management team GM has ever had. The company has made bold moves under her direction including GM exiting the Russian market, pulling the Chevy brand out of Europe, and winding down Australian manufacturing.

During her tenure, GM has also forged ahead with a strategy to transform mobility. In 2016, GM launched its ride-sharing service Maven, acquired Cruise Automation, made a substantial investment in Lyft, and launch of the all-electric Chevy Bolt. 

As if that wasn’t impressive enough, Barra has presided over years of consecutively profitable quarters and transformed GM’s balance sheet into a fortress. And as of late, the carmaker’s stock price has even seen a modest uptick, which has largely disappointed investors since a 2010 IPO.

The legacy of Alfred Sloan

She was up against unprecedented challenges as the first female CEO of a major automaker, but Barra has been so effective that you have to go back to 1950s to find a leader of similar capability: GM’s legendary midcentury President, Alfred Sloan, when effectively created the modern American corporation.

Barra doesn’t have the 50% US market share that Sloan did, but she has considerable vision — and the capability to execute on the two major pieces of her strategy.

The Opel sale forms an integral part of this. For several years, Barra has stressed that GM will be ruthless about maximizing its return in invested capital. If there’s an overarching message at the company now, that’s what it is, and it’s been echoed by everyone I’ve talked to at the carmaker. 

Wasting money isn’t in the playbook, and that’s why GM has been making big moves in Europe and Russia, with Opel just the latest example. The moment is also ideal to sell Opel to PSA, which was bailed out by the French government and Chinese investment and needs to drastically increase its market share in Europe. The European market has also probably recovered as much as it reasonably can at this point, and the last thing Barra wants is to manage Opel through a downturn.

Losing money becomes investing money

GM has by all accounts enjoyed a happy collaboration on several vehicles with PSA and CEO Carlos Tavares, so the French automaker makes for buyer ready to deal, with only the intricate politics of German and British approval to contend with (no mean feat, and Barra has been on deck with this issue, traveling to Europe this week).

Losing money in Europe can now be transformed into investing money in the US and China, which together could account for something like 40 million in annual vehicle sales in total, with GM capturing 30% and bolstering the bottom line by selling profitable trucks and SUVs.

Investment could also flow to new opportunities in ride-hailing, self-driving vehicles, and new connectivity technologies that will tap the flow of data that GM can collect with its vehicles.

Unlike the last time around, there now appears to be will at GM to say goodbye to Opel after almost a century. Barra has provided the backbone. Now all the automaker has to do is execute.
