THE PERFORMER | Sacha Baron Cohen THE SHOW | The Spy THE EPISODE | “Home” (Sept. 6, 2019) THE PERFORMANCE | Portraying real-life Mossad spy Eli Cohen in Netflix’s riveting six-episode thriller afforded funnyman Cohen the rare opportunity to flex his dramatic acting chops. And the artist formerly known as Borat more than rose to the occasion, delivering a searing, visceral performance that peaked in the series’ tense and ultimately (and inevitably) somber finale. In the episode’s opening scenes, Eli struggled mightily to keep his double life from unraveling, as his family — namely beleaguered wife Nadia (played with ferocious restraint by Homeland alum Hadar Ratzon Rotem) — grew increasingly suspicious of his day job. The mounting pressure forced Eli to lose his trademark cool, and Cohen depicted the tortured spy’s mental spiral with both stunning precision and frightening unpredictability. Cohen also vividly conveyed his alter ego’s escalating identity confusion, with Eli at one point lamenting with heartbreaking poignancy to his Mossad trainer, played by The Americans‘ Noah Emmerich, “I’m pretending to be me.” The pinnacle of Cohen’s performance arrived at the finale’s tragic conclusion, during which the Who Is America? chameleon ably embodied Eli’s quiet resignation as the mentally and physically broken spy was led to his public hanging. As the noose was lowered around Eli’s neck, Cohen — with just an upward tilt of the head and a subtle shift of the jaw — silently, breathlessly infused his alter ego’s final moments with brutal defiance. Which performance(s) knocked your socks off this week? Tell us in Comments! RELATED STORIES
HONORABLE MENTION | Shiv’s impromptu outburst at Succession‘s big dinner party last Sunday resulted in a sterling showcase for Sarah Snook. We watched in awe as the actress expertly turned her normally unflappable character into a rattled, frenzied mess in the wake of ill-timed disclosure that she was the Logan scion getting the keys to family’s media empire. “I don’t know, I just f–king said it,” she stammered to hubby Tom when pressed about her reckless action, Snook imbuing each word with aggravated regret. When Shiv began to consider the possibility that her verbal gaffe could cost her the coveted throne, Snook brilliantly shifted from anger to fear, before ending her alter ego’s meltdown with this perfectly rendered summation: ‘I f—ked it.”
HONORABLE MENTION | Yes, the rotoscope animation that gives Amazon’s Undone its signature look is eye-catching. But five minutes into the series premiere, we were way more focused on lead actress Rosa Salazar than on how her character was drawn: The woman is fascinating. Salazar gives Alma a laid-back affect — full of sarcastic eyerolls and scoffing laughs — that nearly belies her deep dissatisfaction with the way her life has unfolded. But when Alma and sister Becca fought outside the church about who is more broken, that thin veneer of “whatever”-dom cracked, and Salazar tearfully gave viewers a hint at how profoundly Alma’s losses — chiefly, the mysterious death of her father years earlier — have shaped her. We’ve seen beyond the first episode, and trust us: Salazar is one of this TV season’s brightest lights.
HONORABLE MENTION | As the title of Netflix’s new, inspired-by-true crime drama, Unbelievable refers both to the invasive process to which rape victims are subject, as well as the credibility of the case at hand in the opening, hard-to-watch episode. Kaitlyn Dever fully drives that first hour as Marie, a teen in at-risk housing who one night is assaulted by a home invader. Or… was she? We never truly doubt Marie’s account, wavering as it may be, in part because of the violent memory “flashes” she privately endures. But when the detectives laboring to investigate her case start to uncover glaring inconsistencies, Dever — with a performance that toggles between quietly traumatized, hysterically sobbing, crestfallen, and a chilling blank stare — does make the viewer wonder what truly transpired.

Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen appeared in two films in 2016 and then disappeared from screens for two years, laying dormant as he planned his next move. Then he burst onto the scene again with Who is America?, a surprise Showtime series that became controversial before it even aired its first episode. The first season came to an end last night, and Cohen says Who is America season 2 is not going to happen.
Tonight, is the last EVER show of “Who is America”. Thank you to all of you who enjoyed it…and for those who didn’t….. pic.twitter.com/o8T2qbIIiv

Cohen has dominated headlines for weeks with the antics of his show, from convincing Republican politicians to support his plan to put guns in the hands of toddlers and turn them into “kinder-guardians”, to giving former Senate candidate Roy Moore (a man accused of having sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl when he was 32) a pedophile test and getting former vice president Dick Cheney to sign a waterboarding kit.
That wasn’t all – Cohen riled people up by getting disgraced former sheriff Joe Arpaio to admit that he “may have to say yes” to a blowjob from Donald Trump. And who could forget how he gave Georgia state lawmaker Jason Spencer a platform to spectacularly go down in flames by exposing his bare ass on television and participating in a “training exercise” that involved him yelling “I’ll touch you with my buttocks” and “I’ll make you a homosexual!” (Spencer resigned after the episode aired.)
One of the bigger names associated with Who is America is former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, who was one of the most outspoken critics of the show before it aired. The reason? She was interviewed by Cohen for the show but was fooled by his prosthetics, and she took to Facebook to denounce him as a way to try to get ahead of the story so she could try to gain some semblance of control over the situation. But ultimately, the joke was on Palin: Cohen never even ran the segment that featured her, meaning all she did was generate untold headlines about the show and provide it all sorts of free publicity.
While Palin didn’t technically appear on the show, her name did end up making it into the final credits. It was Cohen’s way of sneaking in one last joke to cap things off.

Every episode of Who is America is available to watch on Showtime.

Sacha Baron Cohen’s new Showtime series, “Who Is America?,” caused a stir before its premiere last week, as several Republican politicians felt the need to get ahead of the show in explaining how Cohen “duped” them to appear on it.
The former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, the former congressman Joe Walsh, and the former US Senate candidate Roy Moore were among those who preceded the show’s premiere with statements explaining their appearances on the series and criticizing Cohen.
In the show’s first episode, Cohen, disguised as an Israeli “anti-terror expert,” roped several Republican congressmen and former elected officials into voicing their support for a program that would arm toddlers with guns to prevent school shootings.
This week, the former vice president Dick Cheney and broadcast journalist Ted Koppel were among the notable people who appeared on the show as unsuspecting guests.
Before the show’s premiere last week, Matt Drudge of The Drudge Report tweeted a list of political and media figures he said Cohen had “finked” for the series, including Palin, Howard Dean, and David Patreus, whom we can expect to see in the show’s subsequent five episodes.
Here are the notable people and politicians who have appeared on “Who Is America?” so far:
Showtime
The show’s first episode began with Cohen interviewing Sanders, the Vermont senator who was a Democratic presidential candidate in 2016, as a right-wing conspiracy theorist character named Billy Wayne Ruddick Jr.
Sanders, with a perplexed expression, politely dodged and shut down various absurd questions on income inequality and other topics from Cohen’s Ruddick.
Showtime
In the strongest segment on Sunday’s episode, Cohen’s Israeli “anti-terror expert” character, Col. Erran Morad, introduced Pratt and several other conservative political figures to a fake program called “Kinderguardians” that would arm children as young as 3.
Pratt endorsed the program and, reading off a teleprompter, said: “Toddlers are pure, uncorrupted by fake news or homosexuality. They don’t care if it’s politically correct to shoot a mentally deranged gunman. They’ll just do it.”
Showtime
Cohen’s Morad character interviewed Gaetz for the segment on arming toddlers, but Gaetz wisely sidestepped the topic, saying, “Typically members of Congress don’t just hear a story about a program and then indicate whether they support it or not.”

In the strongest segment of the pilot for Sacha Baron Cohen’s new Showtime satirical series, “Who Is America?,” Cohen, disguised as an Israel “anti-terror expert,” convinces conservative politicians and gun-rights advocates to endorse a program that would arm American toddlers with guns.
One of Cohen’s unsuspecting guests, Philip Van Cleave, the president of the Virginia Citizens Defense League, who recognized that he was being duped after filming his part for the show, wrote a 1,400-word Facebook post recapping his experience on the project as a “warning” to fellow gun advocates and conservatives way back in April, The Daily Beast reported.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

Sacha Baron Cohen is best known for his wild comedic antics as characters like Ali G, Borat and Bruno in faux documentary movies and TV shows where he behaves inappropriately in front of real people who have no idea that everything happening in front of them is one big joke. But now he’s heading into dramatic territory with a new limited series at Netflix.
The Spy is a six episode series that will see Sacha Baron Cohen playing real-life spy Eli Cohen (no relation), who worked for Israel in the early 1960s, going undercover in Syria.
Netflix announced the Sacha Baron Cohen spy drama series as a new project that will debut globally on Netflix everywhere (except in France where it will be on OCS). Cohen has traditionally been a comedic actor, dabbling in more traditional comedies like The Dictator and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, musicals such as Les Miserables and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and animated fare like the Madagascar franchise.
Cohen was born in Hammersmith, west London, but his mother was Israeli, giving him the perfect background to play the Israeli spy who infiltrated the high society of Damascus, Syria, rising through the ranks of their politics. The work of Eli Cohen is believed to have been key in helping shape the Middle East, and the intelligence he gathered before his arrest is said to have been an important factor in Israel’s success in the Six Day War. We’d tell you more about his life, but we don’t want to spoil how this story ends.
Funnily enough, the role will require Cohen to have a mustache that will call back to his days spent playing Borat. But he won’t have those signature frizzy curls to go along with it, so hopefully that won’t serve as much of a distraction from Cohen taking on a big dramatic role like this.
The Spy will be written and directed by Gideon Raff, who created the Israeli series Prisoners of War, which served as the inspiration for the Showtime series Homeland. You probably couldn’t ask for a better name on the page and behind the camera for a spy thriller like this, and it will undoubtedly add to the authenticity of Eli Cohen’s story.
For those interested, you can also get a dose of Sacha Baron Cohen on Netflix right now since he appears on Seth Rogen’s recently released Hilarity for Charity special.

Gerald Finley is to play Baron Scarpia for the first time
Here is a man, Rome’s Chief of Police, who actually keeps a torture chamber in his apartment at the Palazzo Farnese.
Canadian baritone Gerald Finley, who makes his role debut as Scarpia in the Royal Opera’s revival of Tosca on January 15, says the detail of the ultimate torture chamber adjacent to the living/ dining room points up how different is the character from others he has sung in the bass-baritone range.
“I’ve tended to take more lyric and sympathetic roles, with the exception of Nick Shadow in Rake’s Progress who cloaks his evil with elegance.
“Scarpia is perceived by the other characters in the opera as a monster; evil, lustful and vengeful.
“He has a psychopath’s charm and certainty of success.
“Psychopaths are wonderfully adept at observing what normal people do and mimicking their behaviour to seem sympathetic.
“The best piece of advice I was given about Scarpia was, ‘remember he’s enjoying every moment’.”
What brings Scarpia down is his certainty that he has Tosca in his power, as she bargains to save her lover Cavaradossi from execution.

Joseph Calleja sings the role of Cavaradossi, while the Tosca who takes a knife to her tormentor is Finley’s fellow Canadian Adrianne Pieczonka, who has won international acclaim in the title role.
This is the first time she and Finley have worked together, though they have met over the years on the opera circuit.
They share an unusual honour, in that their heads are on different Canadian postage stamps, chosen to represent Canadian opera during last year’s 150th anniversary of the Canadian Confederation.
Gerald Finley was born in Montreal in 1960 and lived in Ottawa before coming to Britain to study at King’s College, Cambridge and the Royal College of Music in London.

The importance of the roles increased over the years throughout Europe, Canada and the United States, where he made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 1998 as Papageno in Mozart’s The Magic Flute.
Other Mozartian roles included Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Count Almaviva.
In 2011 he sang the pivotal role of Hans Sachs in Wagner’s mighty Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at Glyndebourne to critical acclaim.

After Tosca, Gerald Finley sings Amfortas in Parsifal
He has created roles in new operas; among them the title role in John Adams’s Doctor Atomic, about the reputed “father of the atomic bomb” J Robert Oppenheimer.
Working with a living composer reminds him that all operas were contemporary at the time when they were created.
Doctor Atomic’s Faustian theme revolves around the search for knowledge and it ends at the first atomic test, with the moment of revelation of radiation’s destructive force.
Finley was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2017 Birthday Honours for services to opera.
MARK DOUET

His work for musical charities has included taking part in a climb to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro for the Musicians’ Benevolent Fund. After Tosca, where the title role is shared with Angela Gheorghiu and Martina Serafin, Finley sings Amfortas in Parsifal, before a three-week tour of North America.
After that it’s a two-and-a-half month break at home in Tunbridge Wells, where he lives with his second wife Heulwen Keyte, music agent for crossover stars including Alfie Boe and Alexander Armstrong, and their two-year-old daughter.
Having a young daughter, he jokes, keeps his feet firmly on the ground: “There is no room for two divas!”
