  • “Inside the NBA” returned with the start of basketball season, meaning Charles Barkley is back on television.
  • A week ago, Barkley was asked to match NBA players with their current teams in a segment called ‘Who He Play For?’ and was only able to answer one of his five questions correctly.
  • On Thursday night, Barkley was challenged again with the same five players, and once again failed miserably.

The NBA is back, and with it, the greatest team in sports broadcasting — the TNT’s “Inside the NBA” crew of Ernie, Shaq, Kenny, and Charles Barkley.

“Inside the NBA” is known for its free-flowing conversations and hilarious sound bites, mostly courtesy of Charles and Shaq. Last year, the crew’s antics included starting a feud with the Golden State Warriors and Shaq chasing Barkley with a catfish.

  • Saquon Barkley broke out for a huge 68-yard touchdown in his first ever NFL game.
  • The second overall pick of the NFL Draft, Barkley’s run was proof to many that he could be the next breakout start of the league.
  • Unfortunately for the Giants, Barkley’s huge run wasn’t enough, as New York would lose its opener to the Jacksonville Jaguars, 20-15.

Saquon Barkley announced his arrival to the NFL on Sunday.

Barkley was the second overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and entered the season with high expectations. With young running backs like Alvin Kamara, Kareem Hunt, and Ezekiel Elliott taking over the league in recent years, there was no underestimating Barkley’s potential.

Charles Barkley Trains Roaches to Use Guns, Threatens to End It All on ‘Saturday Night Live’ https://briefnews.eu/charles-barkley-trains-roaches-to-use-guns-threatens-to-end-it-all-on-saturday-night-live/ https://briefnews.eu/charles-barkley-trains-roaches-to-use-guns-threatens-to-end-it-all-on-saturday-night-live/#respond Mon, 05 Mar 2018 06:45:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/charles-barkley-trains-roaches-to-use-guns-threatens-to-end-it-all-on-saturday-night-live/ Charles Barkley Hosted Saturday Night Live

Whenever Saturday Night Live brings in an athlete to host the late night sketch comedy series, the quality of the show can be hit or miss. Some athletes just don’t have the charisma or the skill to do live comedy (or acting in general), but then there are those like Michael Jordan and Peyton Manning who really bring the laughs. Charles Barkley falls somewhere in the middle, and that’s exactly what we got this weekend.

Kicking off a new trio of episodes this month, Charles Barkley returned to Studio 8H for his fourth time at host. We got the highs and lows of having Barkley in the spotlight, because at times he can be downright hilarious, but other times he stunts the comedy show by stumbling over lines, which he’s reading in a clunky fashion. But even when the latter happened, there were still plenty of hilarious moments.

Let’s run through the sketches of the Charles Barkley hosted Saturday Night Live below.

The Best

Hump or Dump – Even though this sketch has Charles Barkley flubbing some lines, his deadpan delivery actually works perfectly in this sketch when he makes the ultimate threat in order to win a dating show. Kenan Thompson’s reactions are perfect, of course, and Alex Moffat and Chris Redd play the perfect desperate douchebags vying after the trashy bachelorette played by Aidy Bryant. Easily the best sketch of the night.

The Champions – Kenan Thompson had a great night on SNL, and this was his finest moment. While Charlies Barkley and Alex Rodriguez get to play the straight men as themselves, Thompson gets to play a terribly brain damaged football player who has totally lost his bearings after playing just nine games across seven seasons. Thomson plays this character in a familiar way, but it’s what he says that makes the sketch feel fresh.

Roach Product – The only way to stop a bad roach is a good roach with a gun. It only helps that Charles Barkley makes sure that those good roaches are god-fearing insects ready to do the lords work as part of Ned’s Roach Away, or NRA (get it?). This is a great way to mock the insanity of the principles that the NRA pushes and lobbies politicians to say over and over again. Do you see how stupid the concept of a good guy with a gun sounds in a different context?

Arsenal star Jack Wilshere steals march on Chelsea's Ross Barkley in England battle https://briefnews.eu/arsenal-star-jack-wilshere-steals-march-on-chelseas-ross-barkley-in-england-battle/ https://briefnews.eu/arsenal-star-jack-wilshere-steals-march-on-chelseas-ross-barkley-in-england-battle/#respond Wed, 24 Jan 2018 23:14:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/arsenal-star-jack-wilshere-steals-march-on-chelseas-ross-barkley-in-england-battle/

The 26-year-old, who ended last season with a broken leg and began this one as the most outside of outsiders at the Emirates, a player confined to the margins.

But since early December, Wilshere has been in Arsene Wenger’s team and playing better and better, missing only one of the last seven games. And now he is suddenly again crucial. Ross Barkley is a player, an England hopeful, one for the future, just like Wilshere.

Spurning a move to Chelsea in the summer, he then missed the entire first half of the season with a hamstring injury, refusing to sign a new deal with Everton and eventually, on January 5, finally getting the £15 million move to Chelsea he wanted.

A little later than Wilshere, Barkley, 24, was back in action, coming on as a substitute for Chelsea as Willian limped off injured, for his first piece of action of the entire campaign.

For both players, the next five months are crucial.

England manager Gareth Southgate has welcomed the return of Wilshere to full fitness and form.

He said yesterday: “It’s a real plus to see him playing as well as he is and playing regularly. He is a player who nobody has ever questioned the quality that he has.

“We want our best players to be available and in good form.”

Exactly the same words could apply to Barkley – who currently has 22 caps to Wilshere’s 34. For both, the ticket for the plane to Russia in the summer rests on their performances – and fitness – between now and the end of the season.

The only game that Wilshere has missed in recent weeks for the Gunners was the miserable FA Cup third round defeat at the hands of Championship side Nottingham Forest. In every other game, often operating from a deep role allowing him to carry the ball forward, which is his strength.

Wilshere operated slightly further forward as once again Arsenal met Chelsea, in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final – as Chelsea came with an attacking line up which shook them early on, Eden Hazard giving them an early lead.

earlier than he had probably expected, shouted at by manager Antonio Conte who wanted him ready sharpish as Willian departed. By then Nacho Monreal’s header had deflected off Antonio Rudiger to level the scores.

The two clashed just before half-time as Barkley won the ball off the Gunners midfielder – who then hacked him down, earning a yellow card. After that bright start, it was the usual cagey affair at the Emirates.

Barkley, like any new boy, found it hard to fit in straight away and gave the ball away a couple of times. He slotted into Chelsea’s front three, a foil for the excellent Hazard.

Wilshere probed, prompted, but also shouted and organised, pointing, ordering.

And his urgency was infectious, as Granit Xhaka capitalised on another deflection off Rudiger to poke Arsenal into the lead.

For Barkley these are early days. Peripheral against Arsenal, his influence has to grow. For Wilshere, this momentum has to be carried on – never mind being offered a new contract at lesser wages. The talking is done on the pitch.

Ross Barkley slammed by Guillem Balague for moving to Chelsea for one controversial reason https://briefnews.eu/ross-barkley-slammed-by-guillem-balague-for-moving-to-chelsea-for-one-controversial-reason/ https://briefnews.eu/ross-barkley-slammed-by-guillem-balague-for-moving-to-chelsea-for-one-controversial-reason/#respond Sat, 06 Jan 2018 12:34:32 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ross-barkley-slammed-by-guillem-balague-for-moving-to-chelsea-for-one-controversial-reason/

Barkley, 24, yesterday signed a five-and-a-half-year deal with last season’s Premier League champions.

That’s despite interest from Spurs where there would have been an increased likelihood of first-team football ahead of the World Cup.

The decision has irked Balague who hit out at the England international in the Sky Sports Transfer Talk podcast.

Balague, who has close links to the club after writing a book with Mauricio Pochettino, said: “I’m pretty sure Spurs were there or thereabouts in terms of Ross Barkley as he fits the mould of what they want to get.

“Ross had a decision to make – do you want to be challenged by someone saying you must improve, you’re not good enough as you are, you need to change things – I’m talking about Pochettino.

“This is a challenge that has to do with do you want to improve, do you want to see yourself doing stuff you perhaps don’t want to do, a lot of things that make him a better player, but with less money.

“Then Chelsea came with the money, boom, without the guarantee of being a regular. Where’s he going to play? It was a decision to make. I’m disappointed.”

Spurs have a tighter wage structure than Chelsea and they notoriously don’t break the bank on wages under the watchful eye of chairman Daniel Levy.

Balague continued: “Do they have to pay more wages? Clearly yes.

“Should they pay more wages? Clearly not – because that would be using money they didn’t have and changing the policy they’ve had all these years.

“There’s a time they will be able to pay that, when the stadium is in full force, but honestly is there much difference between £120,000 and £160,000-a-week? Is there, really, when you’re developing as a player? I don’t think there is.

“You can see 17 out of the last 22 to make their debut with England have been in the hands of Pochettino.

“We are saying he improves players. There’s a situation between Antonio Conte and Chelsea of tension and you don’t even know if he will be there.

“What is the progression? What if the next guy who comes, and it won’t be Diego Simeone by the way, What happens if the next guy who comes says you’re not giving me enough, what about that?

“Why not ignore the money and go for something that will make you better?

“What is he going to add to Chelsea by the way, who are the champions of England.”

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte CONFIRMS Ross Barkley move from Everton https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-boss-antonio-conte-confirms-ross-barkley-move-from-everton/ https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-boss-antonio-conte-confirms-ross-barkley-move-from-everton/#respond Fri, 05 Jan 2018 14:41:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chelsea-boss-antonio-conte-confirms-ross-barkley-move-from-everton/

The midfielder is said to be having a medical today ahead of a proposed £15million switch.

There has been no official confirmation from the Blues of a transfer going through just yet, but in this afternoon’s press conference Conte was openly talking about how he plans to use him in his plans going forward.

“I think that if there is news, the club will inform you. This is the right way,” Conte said.

“For sure we’re talking about a young player, an English player. He can have good prospects for Chelsea. I think the club decided on this investment also for his contract.

“I think the club decided this investment for his contract, I think it is a good opportunity for the club to buy this player.

LIVE CHELSEA TRANSFER NEWS UPDATES

“He had a bad injury and has not played for seven months. We have to hope to recover him very quickly and have him for the rest of the season.”

Barkley hasn’t played a minute of football for Everton this season due to a hamstring injury.

But the England international is almost back to full fitness and Conte will be hoping to use him in the second half of the campaign.

And Conte admits he cannot afford to rush the midfielder back too quickly.

“He is very strong physically with great technique,” Conte added.

“It is important to understand when he can recover from his injury.

“He has had a long injury with surgery, he’s not played for seven months.”

Barkley came close to joining Chelsea last summer but pulled out of a move at the last minute to focus on his recovery from injury.

But despite Everton’s best efforts to get him to sign a new deal, the 24-year-old has opted for a fresh challenge in west London.

Chelsea confident of signing Everton star Ross Barkley for just £15m https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-confident-of-signing-everton-star-ross-barkley-for-just-15m/ https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-confident-of-signing-everton-star-ross-barkley-for-just-15m/#respond Fri, 05 Jan 2018 03:45:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chelsea-confident-of-signing-everton-star-ross-barkley-for-just-15m/

Chelsea appeared close to signing Barkley back in the summer, only for the midfielder to stay at Everton.

The England international reportedly pulled out of a deal before he had his medical.

Since then, Tottenham and Manchester United have emerged as potential suitors with respective bosses Mauricio Pochettino and Jose Mourinho admirers.

But the Daily Mail say Chelsea are confident of landing Barkley from Everton for just £15million.

Speaking today, Toffees boss Sam Allardyce appeared to accept the 24-year-old would quit Goodison Park.

“The club was resigned before I got here that they were going to lose Ross,” he said.

“I can’t see that changing.

“There has still been no contact but I would expect one of the big clubs to come in for him in the next few weeks.”

And the Daily Mail say Chelsea appear likely to succeed where they failed in the summer.

They also add the Blues have enquired about West Ham’s Andy Carroll.

Carroll has found himself out of favour at the London Stadium since David Moyes replaced Slaven Bilic.

And speaking recently he expressed his frustrations at not being a regular.

“It’s been very frustrating,” he admitted.

“I’ve been sitting on the bench – it’s been tough. I’ve been wanting to play.

“I’ve been wanting to get there and start. It’s hard when you’re coming on for the last 20 minutes.”

“I don’t want to be an impact player coming off the bench.”

Mauricio Pochettino to swoop for Ross Barkley and Luke Shaw – EXCLUSIVE https://briefnews.eu/mauricio-pochettino-to-swoop-for-ross-barkley-and-luke-shaw-exclusive/ https://briefnews.eu/mauricio-pochettino-to-swoop-for-ross-barkley-and-luke-shaw-exclusive/#respond Sun, 24 Dec 2017 01:17:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/mauricio-pochettino-to-swoop-for-ross-barkley-and-luke-shaw-exclusive/

Pochettino has seen his side slip outside of the top four and is ready to bring in reinforcements when the transfer window opens next week.

He is ready to battle Chelsea for England midfielder Barkley, who is returning to fitness after having surgery on a ruptured hamstring.

Barkley, out of contract in the summer, played in a behind-closed-doors game at Everton’s Finch Farm training ground early last week.

And the 24-year-old, who appears on the wanted list of Arsenal and West Ham as well as the Blues, will be ready for first-team action in time for the transfer window.

Manchester United left-back Shaw is another long-term Pochettino target and has struggled to settle at Old Trafford since his £30million move from Southampton in 2014 – he is also interesting Newcastle.

Jose Mourinho will let Shaw leave the club to finance a £25m move for Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon.

Chelsea news: Ross Barkley DENIES medical and reveals why Everton exit collapsed https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-news-ross-barkley-denies-medical-and-reveals-why-everton-exit-collapsed/ https://briefnews.eu/chelsea-news-ross-barkley-denies-medical-and-reveals-why-everton-exit-collapsed/#respond Sat, 02 Sep 2017 15:36:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chelsea-news-ross-barkley-denies-medical-and-reveals-why-everton-exit-collapsed/

The Everton midfielder made all the headlines on transfer deadline day as he looked to secure a last-minute move away from Goodison Park.

Widespread reports suggested Barkley had rejected the chance to join Chelsea after changing his mind mid-way though his medical.

Other reports suggested he had failed the medical.

Chelsea and Everton had already agreed a £35million fee but Barkley pulled the plug on a deal at the last minute.

Everton’s majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri said Barkley had a medical at Chelsea’s Cobham base — but both Chelsea and sources close to the player insist that was never the case.

And the England international has taken to Twitter to clear up the situation.

He tweeted: “Contrary to a number of reports in the press, I did not undertake a medical with any club at any point

“I simply decided that due to my injury, it would be best to make a decision on my future and assess all my options in January when fully fit.

“Thanks for all of the support.”

Tottenham’s interest in Barkley is also thought to have been an influencing factor in his decision to wait until January with the midfielder keen to link up with Mauricio Pochettino.

Barkley has battled with a hamstring injury all summer that is likely to see him on the sidelines until November after undergoing surgery a fortnight ago.

The 23-year-old will now stay at Ronald Koeman’s side and reconsider his next move during the January transfer window.
