A bargain hunter spent just $ 75 on a medieval script at a yard sale that could be worth as much as $ 10,000.

The Maine Monitor reported last week that Will Sideri picked up the 700-year-old document at an estate sale in Maine after noticing the leaf adorned in Latin writing alongside some musical notes.

The Associated Press reported that Sideri was initially in the market for a "KitchenAid mixer, a bookshelf or vintage clothing" at the estate sale, but ended up spending $ 75 on the manuscript labelled: "1285 AD. Illuminated manuscript on vellum. $ 75.''

Sideri messaged Megan Cook, an English professor at Colby College who used to teach him, to ask if it was real. Cook got in touch with fellow academic Lisa Fagin Davis, who determined within a few hours that the photo was genuine, per the Monitor.

What's more, Davis said it could be worth up to $ 10,000. An expert on manuscripts confirmed the valuation to the AP.

Davis, a Simmons University professor, told Insider in an email: "Leaves of the Beauvais Missal measure around 295 x 205 mm and have 15 or 21 lines of text, or ten staves of music, in two columns.

"An estate sale in Maine isn't even the most unexpected place where a Beauvais Missal leaf has turned up. Will's leaf is, however, the least expensive leaf sold in recent memory. The most expensive was sold a few years ago for $ 10,000," she said.

Davis, who is also executive director of the Medieval Academy of America, said the script appeared to be from the Beauvais Missal, used in the Beauvais Cathedral in France, that dated back to the late 13th century. It was likely used in Roman Catholic worship. 

The academic told the Monitor that newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, said to be the inspiration for the film Citizen Kane, once owned the script before selling it in 1942.

Davis has written extensively on the Beauvais Missal, and told the Monitor individual scripts were likely torn out of a larger book by art dealers, much to the chagrin of academics. 

Despite knowing its true value, Sideri told the Monitor he doesn't intend to sell the script, and has handed it over to his parents for safe keeping while he moves home.

"This is something at the end of the day that I know is cool," he told the AP. "I didn't buy this expecting to sell it."

It is rare, but not unheard of, for the true value of a historic piece of art to go awry over time. In 2018, Laura Young bought a Roman Bust at a Goodwill in Austin for $ 34.99. It turned out to be a genuine 2,000-year-old relic, and was arranged to be returned to its rightful owners in Germany.

When asked about its value on the programme, Charles Hanson said he expected the egg to sell for two to three hundred pounds.

The auctioneer explained: “It’s in remarkably complete condition, with its casing as well. I think to many collectors, this egg really belongs in a museum to celebrate the food fancies through the decades.”

At the auction in Etwall near Derby, buyers scrambled to purchase this piece of history and the hammer price of £800 surpassed all expectations.

The successful bidder was the Bygones museum in Torquay, Devon.

It joins the museum’s collection of unusual historical items and antique food, which includes a Christmas pudding made in 1900.

Viewers can watch this episode of Bargain Hunt in June, although the show airs daily at 12.15pm on BBC One.

Flying at Christmas can be expensive, with the priciest day often the last Friday before, this year falling on December 21.

While some people are choosing to fly abroad for a much-needed holiday, others are travelling back home to spend time with their families.

There are a few easy ways, however, to make festive flights a bit cheaper.

Loes Daniels, CEO and founder of Flightgiftcard, spoke to Express.co.uk on how to get a bargain.

Email alerts

It can be worth tracking a particular flight to see when it is cheapest to buy.

Loes advised: “If you know where you are travelling to and from, set up an alert to receive notifications when your flights have dropped in price as you could get a bargain.”

This can sometimes fluctuate between booking on a Tuesday or a Saturday.

Midweek searches

Booking during this time of the week can also mean avoiding sky-high prices.

“Search for flights during the week,” Loes said, “rather than at the weekend as bookings made on a Saturday tend to be the most expensive.”

It also makes sense to fly in the middle of the week as well.

“Likewise, flying on a Monday or Tuesday is much cheaper than taking flights at the weekend so be sure to choose your travel dates carefully,” she said.

Try a smaller airport

It can make a difference if choosing a different location to fly from.

“Consider travelling to or from a smaller, local airport as this can be a lot cheaper than a larger airport hub,” Loes said.

“In the UK, research flight options out of Doncaster’s Robin Hood airport or East Midlands airport in Nottingham, rather than Manchester for example, and you might find the cost is significantly less.”

Smaller airports are also less stressful, often carrying less passengers and therefore smaller crowds.

Straying from a preferred airline is one of the best ways to get a bargain, due to different countries celebrating different seasons.

Loes advised: “It’s worth checking out Asian airlines as these countries don’t generally celebrate Christmas and are therefore unaffected by price hikes.”

Choose inconvenient flights

For passengers not constrained by time, flying at difficult hours and difficult times around Christmas can mean huge savings.

“The more inconvenient the flight, the cheaper it will be. You may not like getting up at 4am for an 8am flight, but you’ll save money in the long run,” Loes advised.

She also said: “Consider flights in the days leading up to and just after Christmas day.”

Otherwise alternative booking options such as package providers at the last minute or making the most of the January sales are the best choices for bargain hunters.

Samsung is rumoured to release its in February 2019 and now a price leak has revealed just how expensive that cost could be.

If Samsung has its way this will be the world’s first true flexible display smartphone and as such it should have a prohibitively high price that reflects the research and development costs that have gone into this new category of phone.

According to Kim Jang-yeol, head of research at Golden Bridge Investment, the Samsung Galaxy X will be priced at around 2 million won, which is about £1,365.

When Apple released its priced at £999 this set the bar for high-end devices beyond most other phones before it. Samsung could push that even further with the Galaxy X.

It will be interesting to see who pays this premium for a new category of device that will likely only appeal to early adopters willing to risk a trial of something new.

The Samsung Galaxy X is expected to feature a 7.3-inch OLED screen inside which folds down. This will leave another external screen in use which should be about a 4.5-inch display.

That larger 7.3-inch screen is expected to be made up of two separate panels. It is unclear if that means there will be a discenable line between the two when folded out.

It seems likely this will appear as one single screen as Samsung Electronics spokesman Kim Choon-gon describes it as a “true foldable display”.

Samsung has recently filed a patent for a type of technology it calls an “artificial muscle” which allows components to fold and sync without damage.

Samsung is rumoured to launch the Galaxy X at its usual flagship phone unveil event in February.

It should move up this year’s ‘flagship’ to a launch in January.

This rumour of an urgent release in early 2019 is supported by the sources that claim Samsung is eager to hang onto the title of “world first” for its truly foldable Galaxy X smartphone.

Huawei and ZTE are both reportedly working on foldable smartphones also.

“In a world where Android backers are doing all they can to stand out from the crowd, the reason top-tier smartphone firms are jumping into the market is because foldable designs are different and allow customers to use them one-handed, while also providing a larger high-resolution display when multitasking is desired,” a Samsung engineer said.

The Audi R8 RWS (Rear Wheel Series) bundles two large surprises in its compact aluminum frame. The first surprise is that it exists at all, this being the first rear-wheel-drive production Audi since the 1938 Audi 920 — long before Audi was the carmaker we now know. The second surprise is the price, the R8 RWS needing just $ 139,950 to take home, a figure that includes destination. Stripping Quattro, complexity, and weight means stripping $ 26,200 from the price of the standard R8, while retaining every joule of the series car’s 540-horsepower. This also means you can get a mid-engined V10 for $ 4,700 less than the cost of a Porsche 911 GT3. And in that case, who needs a twin-turbo V6 R8?

Prospective buyers won’t want to spend too long debating the deal; Audi’s only making 999 of the R8 RWS, just 320 of them headed to America. Other countries get the choice of coupe and convertible, U.S. versions will be coupe only. Spotters will be able to identify coupes by the gloss black upper side blade and body-colored lower side blade, matte black grilles, gloss black wheels, and optional red vinyl stripe.

A more pointed driving experience comes courtesy of ten-percent stiff dampers and front roll bar, and recalibrated power steering on a fixed ratio rack — the normally optional dynamic rack isn’t an option here. Reports quoted Audi as saying the R8 RWS eliminates 110 pounds from the standard R8, for a claimed weight of 3,505 pounds. We don’t know where that curb weight comes from, though; Audi’s U.S. site claims the regular U.S. R8 rings in at 3,737 pounds, over at Audi Germany the R8 weighs 3,773 pounds. So either engineers were being modest, or “pounds” should be “kilograms,” or some vital details sank while crossing the Atlantic.

Not that we should lose the plot over a dollop of adiposity — what could be most important here is Audi’s attempt to try on a new philosophy. Former Audi Sport CEO Stephan Winklemann changed the division’s name from the AWD-specific Quattro Gmbh, saying, “Quattro can be a company, but it can also be an option.” Winklemann left to oversee Bugatti, but an Audi spokesperson told The Drive that the R8 RWS tests the consumer market for more such products. Shown enough enthusiasm, Audi Sport could do the same kind of drivetrain simplifying work on one or more RS models.

According to the Association of British Travel Agents’ (ABTA) latest Holiday Habits report, package holidays are here to stay. A whopping 51 per cent booked one in the past twelve months.

The reason? Convenience – over 75 per cent said they opted for a package holiday because they enjoyed ‘having everything taken care of’.

Another 58 per cent said it was because they are the ‘best value option for price’.

With all this in mind, getting the best deal possible is a top priority for many holidaymakers.

Express.co.uk has spoken to travel expert, Jack Sheldon from Jack’s Flight Club, about how to get the most bang for your buck when booking a package holiday. Jack revealed the following tricks.

Last minute deals do exist

Contrary to popular opinion, last minute deals do exist, according to Jack. In fact, when it comes to chartered airlines they even reverse the trend.

Jack said: “Most airlines raise their prices sharply around two weeks prior to departure” . This is regardless of whether the flight is in demand or not.

The reason? “To capitalise on business travellers who are less concerned about price than they are about their schedule”.

However, package holidaymakers are in luck. According to Jack, the world’s biggest travel group TUI “bucks this trend completely”.

This means that two weeks prior to departure, package holiday providers are actually dropping their prices to get rid of their remaining seats, even during peak travel times.

So, according to Jack “if you are not too fussed about your destination, you can find some incredible deals”.

As well as TUI, another package holiday favourite, Thomas Cook Airlines, also drop their prices substantially within a month or two of travel.

Departure airport

According to Jack you shouldn’t be tied to one departure airport as “you might find cheap flights from Manchester or Glasgow say, but not from London – and vice versa”.

With Manchester Airport and Liverpool John Lennon Airport only a mere 30 miles from one another, when looking for good deals it’s always advisable to include nearby airports in your holiday search.

The same is true of the London airports. London Luton and London Stansted airports are only forty miles apart. Travelling from a different airport could mean the difference between cheap and expensive flights.

Jack, explained, “If I was in Edinburgh and limited to this I would definitely be looking at late June/early July departures from Newcastle, Manchester or Leeds, as those will be much cheaper – even with an extra train ticket.

“The same goes for English travellers flying in August – don’t rule out flying from Scottish airports.”

As well as this, flying from an alternative airport may mean less traffic, cheaper car rentals and shorter queues in airport security.

Don’t be fooled by airline ‘sales’

Lastly, Jack advises bargain hunters to be aware of airline ‘sales’. Instead, you should always track your fares on the online flight booking website, Google Flights, to confirm that the sale is in fact real.

Seasonal sales are a firm fixture in airlines calendars. For example, British Airways has at least four a year.

But, according to Jack “it is important to be cautious and not blindly book during the sale”.

He said: “While it’s true some routes and dates will offer substantially reduced fares during a sale, many destinations won’t drop in price at all and peak season dates often won’t fall in price at all.”

So, by all means have a root for the sale but make sure to keep track of dates and fares to see if the price has actually changed for your flight.

If it hasn’t, it might be better to wait and book that flight during a standard price drop later on, Jack advises.
