Rafael Barba returned to Law & Order: SVU Thursday… and he made sure everyone knew it.

Raul Esparza’s character, who was an SVU staple in Seasons 14 through 19, left the District Attorney’s office in controversy when he stepped in to assist a mother in ending her terminally ill baby’s life. Though a jury found him not guilty of murder in the second degree, the case left a mark on the ADA. “You’ve opened my heart, and I thank you for it,” he told Liv before kissing her on the forehead and walking out of her life (and leaving the show)… until last season, when we saw them chat via video call while he was investigating voter fraud in Iowa.

In this week’s episode, Barba once more took part in an SVU case that went to trial — only this time, he provided legal counsel for the defendant. And what a show he put on! Let’s go over the highlights.

Liv and Fin grabbed coffee with Barba to “hypothetically” get his help cutting a deal for a military veteran who’d shot the man who sexually abused and impregnated his daughter. But when Barba went to discuss the case with Carisi, Sonny quickly figured out what was going on and demanded to know if Barba was representing the dad. And just like that, he was.

law-and-order-svu-recap-season-22-episode-4-Which led to the inevitable Barba-Carisi showdown in the courtroom. Barba’s tack: No jury would want to sentence an upset dad/wounded veteran to prison for acting on an impulse most parents could easily understand. Carisi’s argument, meanwhile, was that the killing was clearly premeditated and took place after the rapist had been remanded to jail to await trial — oh, and killing someone is illegal.

“Barba, he’s guilty,” Liv said when he swung by the squad room for a visit. “Is he?” the lawyer mused. “Depends on the jury.”

During the trial, Barba hammered home the point that neither SVU nor the city’s Administration for Child Services had picked up on the fact that the teen at the center of the case had been abused by her foster father — who himself was an ACS official. And because the systems designed to protect kids hadn’t done their jobs, Barba’s client had “no choice but to protect his daughter himself.”

law-and-order-svu-recap-season-22-episode-4-After a six-hour deliberation, the jury found the dad guilty of manslaughter in the second degree, which will result in a roughly three-year sentence — which was the deal Carisi had offered Barba at the start of the case. After the verdict was read, the two counselors grabbed a drink with Rollins, Fin and Kat, but Barba bailed early in order to see his mother before she took off for Florida.

Outside the bar, he ran into Liv and asked if she was mad at him. She replied that she thought he kinda made the case more about him than about seeing justice done. “The way that you had to leave,” she explained. “Maybe you weren’t defending him. Maybe you were defending yourself.”

He didn’t address her concerns directly, but noted that they “can’t change the past.” Liv looked at him sadly. “I just miss it, and you. That’s all,” she said. “Me, too,” he agreed. Then they gave each other a fond look, and he left.

The former partners wound up snuggling on the couch, but an Amber Alert (for the girl at the center of the episode) interrupted anything else that might’ve happened.

* The Amber Alert also interrupted Fin’s romantic dinner with Phoebe, which stopped him from proposing to her. But don’t worry: He did it a while later, and she said yes.

Ben Barba torches Super League in crazy performance https://briefnews.eu/ben-barba-torches-super-league-in-crazy-performance/ https://briefnews.eu/ben-barba-torches-super-league-in-crazy-performance/#respond Fri, 02 Feb 2018 23:04:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ben-barba-torches-super-league-in-crazy-performance/ BEN Barba has scored a try just a few minutes in, notched another in the second half and laid on a raft of others in a stunning man-of-the-match start to the Super League season with St Helens.

Barba, who joined the Saints last year after an ill-fated stint in French rugby with Toulon, started at fullback in a clash with last year’s grand finalists Castleford and was outstanding in a romping 46-6 win at Langtree Park.

He rapidly found the tryline after a break from Jonny Lomax, before coming up with his own try assist a few minutes later for fellow ex-NRL player Zeb Taia.

Barba, the 2012 Dally M Medallist, began the season rated an 8-1 hope for Super League’s best and fairest award, the Man of Steel. His first-up performance had English fans (and others) raving, as he kept the tries flowing in St Helens’ home fixture.

And it wasn’t just in attack that Barba did the business, with a tackle on Tigers winger midway through the second half also wowing fans. Eden found some space – only for Barba to smash him into touch.

Then came his second try a minute later, pushing the score to 32-6.

Barba laid on a hat-trick try for Mark Percival in the 78th minute to ice a thumping win and earn man of the match honours.

Barba’s performance will no doubt make NRL clubs sit up and take notice. The former Bulldogs, Broncos and Sharks player was exiled from the NRL after testing positive to cocaine in the wake of Cronulla’s 2016 grand final win.

Law & Order: SVU Finale Recap: Did Olivia and Barba Make the Right Call? https://briefnews.eu/law-order-svu-finale-recap-did-olivia-and-barba-make-the-right-call/ https://briefnews.eu/law-order-svu-finale-recap-did-olivia-and-barba-make-the-right-call/#respond Thu, 25 May 2017 04:47:58 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/law-order-svu-finale-recap-did-olivia-and-barba-make-the-right-call/ Law & Order: SVU‘s season ender on Wednesday added another tragic layer onto its stock-in-trade sexual violence by bringing illegal immigration — and New York’s status as a sanctuary city — into an already harrowing rape-and-murder investigation.

Along the way, Olivia Benson did something she’s never had to do in her entire time on the force. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. First, a brief recap of the back-to-back episodes:

Three masked men break into a Syrian family’s restaurant, steal the money, kill the father, rape both of his adult daughters, then kill one of those daughters. Along the way, the criminals spray-paint “Muslims must die” on the refrigerators.

Evidence leads Benson & Co. to realize that another man was in the building during the rapes and murder. Turns out, it was Yusef, brother of Maya, whose husband and daughters were attacked. He hesitated to come forward, though, because he’s an illegal immigrant and he’s gay: If he’s deported, he’ll likely be killed. But he can identify one of the men from the attack — Hector Ramirez, a worker whom the restaurant owners had to let go weeks before.

The SVU team promises Yusef that he won’t be deported… and then Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers deport him. When Hector won’t budge, Olivia uses the aforementioned tactic she’s never stooped low enough to employ: She threatens Hector’s illegal immigrant wife, Soledad, with deportation (and placement for her daughters in foster care) if the woman doesn’t drop her phony alibi for Hector. It’s a game of chicken, but Soledad eventually gives in for fear of losing her children. So yes, Liv wins, but it’s an ugly win.

Then they get Hector to admit that he was there — and to identify two white co-workers of his from another job, named Mitchell and Steven, as the ones who raped and murdered the members of the family.

Mitchell and Steven are horribly racist idiots who say things like “Mexicans love tequila and raping. Just ask the president.” And Hector testifies in front of a grand jury that they’d come along for a robbery of the restaurant (because he was angry about being fired and wanted to get back at Maya and her family), but then things had spiraled out of control while he watched.

Outside the courthouse, though, another white supremacist shoots Hector, who eventually dies. So the team is once more without the evidence it needs… until Maya suddenly remembers seeing the faces of Mitchell and Steven on the night of the attack. Liv is skeptical, given that the woman hadn’t mentioned that detail, but Maya says she’d been afraid of the men’s threats to come back and kill her if she said anything.

“Her story isn’t perfect, but it’s plausible,” Barba later tells Olivia before putting Maya on the stand… where she lies and says that she told Olivia about seeing the men’s faces weeks before Hector’s death. And Barba is kind of into Liv lying about it on the stand… though he won’t come out and tell her to perjure herself.

But Liv can’t bring herself to lie to the jury, which earns her the anger of Maya and her daughter, Lela. But a wife of one of the white guys overhears, and Liv exhorts her to tell the truth about her husband’s whereabouts on the night of the rape and murder — especially because he’s abusive to her, and putting him away would be a very good thing. So White Wife tells the truth, causing her husband to rush the stand in anger before bailiffs pull him away.

But don’t feel too good about the justice that is eventually served: Chief shows up at Liv’s office after the verdict to report that a mosque in East Harlem just got firebombed. “Five dead,” he tells a shocked Olivia and Barba.

Barba rules out NRL return https://briefnews.eu/barba-rules-out-nrl-return/ https://briefnews.eu/barba-rules-out-nrl-return/#respond Sat, 20 May 2017 20:56:40 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/barba-rules-out-nrl-return/

Ben Barba is keen on a rugby league comeback — but not in the NRL.

Ian McCulloughAAP

BEN Barba is set for a shock switch to the English Super League less than four months after sensationally quitting the NRL after testing positive for cocaine.

The former Canterbury, Brisbane and Cronulla fullback, who won the Dally M Medal in 2012, is currently serving a 12-match NRL ban after failing a drugs test following the Sharks’ Mad Monday grand final celebrations last October.

After accusing the NRL of double standards, Barba left to join Toulon on January 31, where his ban cannot be imposed, but has failed to make an impression with the French rugby giants and has been told he can leave.

Barba attended the Super League magic weekend at Newcastle United’s St James’ Park stadium, and confirmed he is ready to make the switch to England and a return to the 13-man game.

“My manager is over here to watch the Magic Weekend,” Barba told Sky Sports.

“I have a few decisions to make over my future so why not catch up here in the UK at Magic Weekend?

“I can’t give away too much at the moment, I’m still with Toulon, I’m here, it’s no lie to say I’m here to see a few clubs.

“Maybe in the next few days we’ll see where I’m at.”

The RFL have stated previously that would not register any player who is serving a NRL-imposed suspension, and if Barba was to join he wouldn’t be seen in action until at least August.

Warrington and St Helens are reportedly leading the race for his signature with Barba’s manager Chris Orr speaking to several clubs on a weekend where all 12 teams play in six matches at the same venue.

Toulon signing Ben Barba with owner Mourad Boudjellal.

BEN Barba’s French rugby dream is reportedly over, just three months after it began.

Despite signing a $ 2.5 million two-year deal, Barba has been reportedly axed by Toulon, having only just joined the French Top 14 club in February this year.

With Toulon’s season finishing in a matter of weeks French site L’Equipe revealed that Barba will be one of five players not returning to the club next season.

Fellow Australian’s Drew Mitchell, Matt Giteau, Jean-Charles Oriolo and Juanne Smith will join Barba in facing the axe.

Alesana Tuilagi, Ayumu Goromaru, Jimmy Yobo and Jonathan Pelissie are also expected to play no further part at Toulon going forward.

Ironically another NRL star will join Toulon in his place for next season, as Parramatta Eels flyer Semi Radradra has signed on with the glamour side.

Toulon’s current Top 14 season has been a disaster, as the big spenders currently flirt with relegation from the first tier of French rugby.

The axing from Toulon could see Barba set his sights on a return to the National Rugby League, but that plan is complicated by an ongoing suspension he is yet to serve.

Barba still must serve a 12-game ban handed to him for a second strike on the NRL’s illicit drug policy. The premiership winner tested positive after taking cocaine during the Shark’s Grand Final celebrations.

Clubs would also have to find a way to fit Barba under the salary cap, and the NRL will no doubt slap a high price on the former Dally M winner.

It’s unlikely he will feature in the 2017 NRL season, given a 12-week ban would almost take him up to the completion of the competition.

The NRL would also have to rubber stamp any return to the game also.

Barba could look to continue his European sojourn by signing with a club in the English Super League, who do not officially recognise NRL suspensions. However they generally comply with the NRL rulings as part of an ongoing understanding between the two rugby league bodies.

The former Canterbury Bulldogs, Brisbane Broncos and Cronulla Sharks star could also opt to remain in French rugby and link with a different Top 14 side.

Barba’s plans to link with his former club could hit a snag as well, as reports emerged on Wednesday that the Sharks were eyeing another high profile fullback.

Cronulla have reportedly joined the hunt for off-contract St George Illawarra star Josh Dugan as uncertainty about the Test and NSW representative’s future rolls on.

The Sharks are prepared to offer the 27-year-old similar money Jack Bird rejected to join Brisbane last month — close to $ 1 million a season — the Seven Network reports.

Dugan and Dragons coach Paul McGregor believe his best position is fullback, but St George Illawarra have reportedly tabled him an offer to play centre, a role which typically would pay less.

The Sharks’ incumbent No. 1 is Valentine Holmes.

Dugan is currently sidelined with a broken cheekbone he suffered in a nasty head clash with Dragons teammate Russell Packer during the Anzac Test last Friday night, ruling him out of the derby with the Sharks at UOW Jubilee Oval on Friday evening.

He faces a race against time to be fit for the first State Of Origin clash on May 31 with the injury expected to keep him out for at least three weeks.
