Now Prior has responded to Lyon’s accusation the former English keeper ran “scared” when he was stood down from the final two tests of the 2013-13 Ashes series when Mitchell Johnson terrorised England on the way to a 5-0 series sweep.
Lyon told English press on Monday Australia is out to “end careers” of English players this summer — pointing to the long-term consequences Johnson’s bowling had on the tourists four years ago.
Ahead of the first Test in Brisbane from Thursday, the off-spinner said many in the England squad remain haunted by Johnson’s 37-wicket assault, taking aim at captain Joe Root who was axed for the final Test in Sydney.
“I know Root got dropped last time when he was here, so it’d be good to get him dropped again wouldn’t it? If we can start by opening up that crack, it’s pretty crucial,” Lyon told reporters.
“There’s a lot of scars for the English guys, especially coming over here, especially when we have two guys bowling 150ks (93 mph), not just one now,” he added, referring to Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins.
On the 2013-2014 tour, Jonathan Trott was sent home with stress-related illness after the first Test, while Graeme Swann abruptly retired mid-series.
Coach Andy Flower was sacked following the Ashes thrashing and wicketkeeper Prior was dropped for the last two Tests, with Lyon claiming he was “scared”.
“Leading into Perth we knew… Matt Prior wanted to fly home before the game started and he was one of the senior players,” said Lyon, one of three players remaining from that side.
“He was scared. It’s four years ago. I think he’s all right now.”
Prior initially laughed off the taunts.
“If that was the case and I was scared, why didn’t I go home then?” he told Britain’s Daily Mail.
“That’s completely ridiculous and all I can do is laugh. It’s wholeheartedly untrue. I stayed out there and what hurt me more was that I got dropped for the last two Tests.”
However, Prior showed his true emotion over the accusations on Tuesday evening when he took to Twitter to publicly rebuke Lyon and wish him misfortune for the summer ahead.
“Last time someone spouted a whole lost of BS about me I stayed quiet, not this time,” Prior posted on his Twitter account.
“To be clear I may have been playing badly fair enough but there was no way I was getting on a plane home. You’ve embarrassed yourself.
“This game has a funny way of biting back.
“I sincerely hope you’re not part of a losing @CricketAus team on home soil @NathLyon421. I still remember being sat on the outfield at the SCG after winning 3-1 while your press&fans were tearing into the Oz players. You want to end careers? Just make sure it’s not yours that ends.”
Johnson himself addressed the scandal on Wednesday night, saying
“On that Prior incident on What Nathan said. I think we all heard that was going to happen, that he was going to go home so I don’t blame Nathan for coming out and saying that,” Johnson told Fox Sports News.
“Prior has come out and said that that’s not true, so we have to take his word for it I guess. The situation is Australia just have to go out there and play a game of cricket. Nathan is just baiting guys. The England Cricket team over here haven’t said anything so it doesn’t really matter what these ex-players say to be honest. The guys just have to go out there and play a bit of cricket.
“Nathan Lyon is more tongue in cheek. I don’t think he would say those kind of words.”
Meanwhile, English cricket commentators have also scolded Lyon for re-opening old wounds.
Vaughan was surprised to see Lyon speak so aggressively on the eve of the series.
Former England captain Nasser Hussain wrote in a column for The Daily Mail, Lyon’s comments appear to be a deliberate attempt to take the media spotlight off the home side after their much discussed team selection announcement last week.
“Nathan Lyon’s words are exactly the kind of thing you expect to hear before a ball goes down in an Ashes series, yet it is surprising they came from him,” the man who led England to a 4-1 defeat in 2002/03 wrote.
“Maybe he was trying to deflect from the bad week Australia have had as far as selection has gone, and a few of their ex-cricketers in Allan Border, Shane Warne and Stuart MacGill turning on their selectors.
“Maybe he was trying to get the heat back on England but it was a an odd thing to say — especially the historical stuff about Matt Prior.
“So yes, it’s an odd fight to pick, but it is part and parcel of what happens in Australia. When you land you are taking on a nation and in the media you are always the worst team that’s ever toured.
“Lyon says an Ashes tour can be a career-ending one. It can also be a career-defining one.”

Eleven (played by Millie Bobby Brown) will be back for more supernatural adventure, along with Mike Wheeler (played by Finn Wolfhard), Will Byers (Noah Schnapp), Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo) and Lucas Sinclair (Caleb McLaughlin).
The Netflix drama will have a total of nine episodes this year as the Upside Down starts to creep into the real world and bring all manner of evil things with it.
However, one of the big questions for season two is whether Barbara Holland (Shannon Purser) – or Barb to fans – will be making a comeback.
In season one Barb appeared to meet a cruel end after she was dragged into a swimming pool and killed by the Demogorgon.

She’d been waiting for her best friend Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer), who was busy making out with boyfriend Steve Harrington (Joe Keery).
Barb’s death was captured on camera by Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton), who was tracking the monster and trying to get physical proof of its existence.
Nancy was left devastated by the death but couldn’t tell anyone the truth after Jonathan revealed what had happened.
Instead, she helped to move Barb’s car and lied to the police about her friend leaving town.
Her parents were left worried when she didn’t turn up for school and confused over what had happened to her.
Barb was a fan favourite due to the injustice of her murder and there is much speculation about her making a comeback.
Speaking at the New York Comic Con last year, actor David Harbour revealed that the character’s story would play a part in season two.
“We do deal with the loose ends in season two,” Harbour explained. “And we do deal with some of the internet rage over Barbs’ death.”
However, he confirmed it was curtains for the character, adding: “I can assure you Barb is very much dead.”
Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer, who directed the series, previously promised that season two would offer ‘justice’ for the much-loved character.
Matt Duffer vowed: “We’ll make sure there’s some justice for Barb. People get very frustrated, understandably, that the town doesn’t seem to be really dealing with Barb. That stuff is all happening. We’re just not spending any screen time on it.”
Barb looked pretty dead in season one when Eleven went into the Upside Down.
She found the schoolgirl’s lifeless body decomposing and a slug-like creature crawling out of her mouth.
Jim Hopper (David Harbour) and Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) also saw Barb’s remains as they ventured into the Upside Down to rescue Will.
Actress Shannon is currently starring in Netflix hit Riverdale as Ethel Muggs, suggesting that she is busy working on new projects and that Barb is lost to fans.
The role of Barb earned her an Emmy nomination last year and the actress is set to be starring in another new show called Rise.
Stranger Things season 2 is available to watch on Netflix.
Barbara ‘Barb’ Holland was best friends with Nancy Wheeler and a student at Hawkins High School.
She was killed by the Demogorgon after being dragged into the Upside Down after a pool party gone seriously wrong.
Nancy had dragged Barb to the party, which was hosted by school jock and all-round cool guy Steve Harrington.
Just before Barb disappeared, she and Nancy had a fight over Nancy going up to Steve’s bedroom.
Left alone, and feeling excluded from the party, Barb hung out near the pool as Jonathan Byers hid in the bushes, taking photos.
She left blood from a cut on her finger drip into the pool, which attracted the monster who dragged her to the Upside Down.
For a while Nancy was the only person who seemed to care that Barb had disappeared. Her parents remained mostly-offscreen, and didn’t seem to be concerned.
Eventually Barb was confirmed dead when Eleven found her body in the Upside Down – wrapped in a sort-of web and with a slug hanging out of her mouth.
Matt Duffer, who created Stranger Things with his twin Ross, has confirmed that Barb is no more.
“I mean, yes ― yes, she’s dead. I thought we were pretty clear about that,” he said.
“There’s a slug hanging out of her mouth ― out of her dead corpse. And then if you were still confused, Jim Hopper finds her in the nest, also very dead.”
“So if you are holding out hope that she is still alive, that’s just wishful thinking,” Ross added.
In a later interview with IGN, Matt explained that season one took place over “the course of six or seven days”, which didn’t give them enough time to explore the effects of Barb’s loss.
“It’s not like her parents are like ‘Oh Barb left. She died!’” Matt said.
“That stuff is all happening. We’re just not spending any screen time on it.”
The lack of concern for Barb’s wellbeing sparked the real-life hashtag #JusticeForBarb, and fans will be relieved to know season two serves just that.
David Harbour, who plays Hopper, told TV Guide: “As a result, I think, of some of the fandom and also as a result of what we want to explore, justice for Barb is a big thing in season two.
“Barb was not given the justice she deserved in season one because we were focused on Will and saving a child, but so we’ve realised from the fans that Barb is important, and so we are going to treat her with the respect that she deserves.”
Indeed, when This Is Us and House of Cards end up in the Outstanding Drama Series category, and the best-executed, most inventive (well, this is pre Twin Peaks: The Return) drama on television gets nothing except a “Guest Actress — Drama” nomination for the admittedly excellent Ann Dowd, meaning feels a little lost…as it perhaps always should on a ceremony with such a (albeit increasingly less) bland monopoly over nationwide perceptions of TV quality. Oh, and by the way, Insecure also was acknowledged for…nothing whatsoever, while Modern Family still managed to be the least modern show somehow still gaining an Outstanding Comedy series nomination.
But if you can get past the perplexing snubs without completely discrediting this list — or with discrediting it while still being marginally interested — you’ll find some great and/or weird surprises, as well as expected and wholly deserving series/performers/creators/writers etc. getting accolades. Among the exciting nominations on this immense list: love for Stranger Things and particularly Millie Bobby Brown (though, seriously, did Barb really deserve an Emmy nomination? Her death certainly moved many to meme-ing mourning, but did her life…really get shown, like, at all?); nominations for Westworld‘s brilliant performances by Thandie Newton, Evan Rachel Wood, and Jeffrey Wright; nominations for Donald Glover (and his brother, for writing) and his sometimes-surreal, sometimes-hyperreal Atlanta; the continued recognition of Veep and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tony Hale, and Matt Walsh’s brilliance, which will never not deserve Emmy praise; unsurprising nods to chillingly potent prestige hits like The Night Of (speaking of which — two nominations for Riz Ahmed, including for his turn on the otherwise mostly overlooked Girls) and The Handmaid’s Tale, which of course scored nominations for Elisabeth Moss, as well as supporting actress nods for Samira Wiley and Ann Dowd (double Dowds this year!); RuPaul’s Drag Race‘s place within the Reality category (which it admittedly also transcends); double-nominations for Matthew Rhys, who, like Ahmed, was nominated for his brilliant (and troubling) Girls performance; Angela Bassett’s recognition for her guest appearance on Master of None; nominations for Tracee Ellis Ross for black-ish and Jane Fonda/Lilly Tomlin for Frankie and Grace in the ever-impressive Comedy Actress category; deserved attention given to Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, and Laura Dern for Big Little Lies; Ewan MacGregor’s nod for his twin performances on Fargo, as well as Carrie Coon’s should-have-been-for-The-Leftovers-but-whatever Fargo nomination, not to mention David Thewlis’ nomination for his role as the deeply creepy V.M. Varga on the show; a posthumous nod for Carrie Fisher in Catastrophe; and many many more.
