Kia has announced that it will join an expanding line of automakers, including Audi, Ram, Volvo and others, adding ultra-mild 48-volt hybrid systems to their engines. The system works like other systems in that it has a combination starter and generator connected to the engine crank via a belt. It allows the engine to be shut off earlier than simply at a stop, and provides a bit of electrical assistance to reduce how much the engine has to work on takeoff.

The system will first be implemented in Europe with the Kia Sportage and with its diesel engine in 2018. In 2019, the Kia Ceed small car will also be offered with the system. Kia says the system will also appear on gasoline engines in the near future. However, a representative from Kia’s U.S. branch wouldn’t comment either way on whether the technology will come to America.

We think it’s a pretty safe bet that we’ll see the technology offered in the U.S. soon. Kia makes it clear that this system is designed to be easy to implement. It says there are hardly any packaging issues, usually putting the battery under the trunk floor, and the starter/generator motor doesn’t typically require reworking the engine bay much. It also should work with rear-, front-, or all-wheel-drive layouts and with manual and automatic transmissions. If it were only going to be on diesel engines, we could see how Kia might not bring it, but since it will also be featured on gas engines, we’re sure it will show up on our shores soon.

Acer ushered in the “Chromebook tablet” era with its Chromebook Tab 10 slab last month, and HP wasted no time entering the new space. The company announced the Chromebook x2, a Chrome OS detachable with a keyboard and Wacom AES stylus that isn’t meant to be confined to the classroom. While Acer’s tablet is meant for education and commercial customers, HP’s Chromebook x2 was made with regular customers in mind, particularly those who are attracted to the versatility and efficiency of Chrome OS.

The Chromebook x2’s specs immediately differentiate it from Acer’s device: it runs on a 7th-gen Y-series Intel processor, 4GB of RAM (and supports up to 8GB), and 32GB of storage that can be expanded to 256GB through the microSD card slot. Designed with a similar size to HP’s other “x2” detatchables, the Chromebook x2 has a 12.3-inch 2400×1600 IPS display that supports touch and pen input, and it has a 5MP WideVision camera and a 13MP rear-facing camera. It has two USB Type-C ports in addition to the microSD card slot and the standard audio in/out jack, and its 48Wh (watt-hour) battery is estimated to last 10.5 hours on a single charge.

“The reason for this is that we intend to keep open channels of dialogue with Russia. Austria is a neutral country and a kind of bridge between East and West. But we support the decision to recall the EU ambassador from Moscow.”

Other countries were already exercising caution before the Monday announcements. Ahead of a meeting with Theresa May at a European Council summit dinner in Brussels last week, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras stressed the need for an investigation into the Skripal case before jumping to conclusions. “We have to express our solidarity to the UK, to the British people, but at the same time we need to investigate,” Tsipras said.

Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, a former criminal lawyer, said he wanted to hear what May had to say at the summit before making a decision.
Meanwhile, the head of Germany’s Die Linke party, Andreas Maurer, told Sputnik that the German position on the case of Sergei Skripal should not have been solely guided by Berlin’s solidarity with the European Union. Berlin chose to expel four Russian diplomats.

“I am looking now, that the Foreign Minister of Germany [Heiko Maas] is talking about the decision as a sign of solidarity – this decision on the part of Germany to send out four diplomats. This is of course, in my opinion, you have to very critically look at this. In this regard, the decision should not be taken because of some sort of solidarity. Whatever problems or errors there may have been, the position of Germany should not have been built upon solidarity,” Maurer said.

Maurer went on to note that Russia would respond with the expulsion of diplomats from all of those countries, adding that such moves will not lead to a normalization of ties. “We all know that Russia is obliged to reply to the expulsion of its diplomats. I am certain that German diplomats, which are now in Russia, will also be expelled from the country. We know that this always happens. This will not lead to solving the problem,” he said.

Even as Western countries continue to blame Moscow for the March 4 poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury, UK – despite a lack of evidence – Mauer expressed a different opinion: “It is obvious here that the West does not want proof concerning the matter, what happened here, and how it happened. They have made a purely political decision, a symbolic decision, we all know this, and it is just ridiculous to expel four diplomats when we will not solve the problem in this way.”

Russia denies having any involvement in the poisoning of Skripal and his daughter Yulia, and has offered its full cooperation in the investigation. Its request for a sample of the toxic agent used in the attack has been denied by the UK.

Bitcoin is in the midst of its worst weekly sell off since 2013, and almost every other major cryptocurrency slumped on Friday. 

That’s especially bad news for the handful of companies who recently announced a pivot to blockchain or another crypto focus. Their stock prices skyrocketed after announcing their pivots to the red-hot space, but most have settled back down — some even lower than where they were trading ahead of the announcements.

People apparently love black-painted trim. Nissan, Chevrolet, and Honda have all recently offered special-edition packages to ditch chrome and color-coded parts for the dark hue, and Subaru is the latest to join the party. Its offering comes in the form of the 2018 Forester Black Edition.

The package is only available on the 170-horsepower, naturally aspirated, Forester 2.5i Premium. It also costs an extra $ 1,150. For that money, you get the following in the eponymous color: 18-inch wheels, fog light trim, badges, mirror caps, and the grille. Inside, the interior is also black. The steering wheel and shifter are leather-wrapped, and the upholstery is cloth with faux leather bolsters. The package isn’t all aesthetics, though. It also comes with steering LED headlights and paddle shifters for the CVT, allowing the driver to pick from six preset ratios. The latter feature was previously exclusive to the turbocharged Forester 2.0XT.

The package also comes on the heels of the 2018 model introduction. There aren’t many notable updates to this year’s Forester, however. All trim levels except Touring increase in price by $ 200. All Touring models jump by $ 1,795. The Touring’s large price jump comes with now-standard reverse automatic emergency braking and high-beam assist. The 2.0XT Touring also now has torque vectoring similar to that in the WRX line.
