Bancroft back in BBL
Cameron Bancroft will return to the sport he loves as a betterperson, but will it help him become a better cricketer?
Bancroft’s nine-month ban for ball tampering officially ended on Saturday, and he’ll make his highly-anticipated return for the Perth Scorchers in Sunday’s BBL clash with the Hobart Hurricanes in Launceston.
The 26-year-old used his time away from the game to immerse himself in yoga, dabble in Spanish, and also learn about Cameron Bancroft the person. Bancroft was ordered to do 100 hours of community service as part of his punishment.

The right-hander did more than double that as his empathy for others grew. But the ball tampering scandal still remains a hot topic, with the issue rearing again on Boxing Day following the airing of Bancroft’s tell-all interview with Adam Gilchrist.
Bancroft revealed during the interview that David Warner was the one who told him to use sandpaper on the ball.
Warner and former captain Steve Smith still have three more months to serve on their bans, and it remains to be seen how they will be reintegrated back into the Test side.
Bancroft’s path back to the national set-up begins now, with the opener keen to hit the ground running.
“What a journey this has been over the last 9 months,” Bancroft wrote alongside one of his Instagram posts, revealing he struggled for motivation to get out of bed at times.
“After thinking, reading, wondering and living it came to me that I had a choice. To lay in suffering or get up, show up and act. Action led to motivation and motivation gave me all the inspiration I needed.
“Here I am now. Grateful of where I am and the person I continue to grow to be.”
The sixth-placed Scorchers (1-2) will be without wicketkeeper/batsman Josh Inglis, who has been ruled out for four weeks with a foot injury. But his loss has been offset by the return of Sam Whiteman from illness. The undefeated Hurricanes (3-0) have named an unchanged squad from the team that beat Sydney Thunder by seven wickets.

AUSTRALIAN Test bad boys Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft will be sent home from South Africa, with “significant sanctions” set to revealed in the next 24 hours.
Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland revealed that the captain, vice-captain and ball-tamperer Bancroft were the masterminds behind the Third test plot.
Sutherland refused to answer whether Smith will captain Australia again, if Warner would play again or whether the players “cheated”.
He also declared that coach Darren Lehmann was not involved and would coach on, refuting that he had offered his resignation.
Sutherland promised that “significant punishments” were imminent, but CA were not yet in a position to make a verdict.
Matt Renshaw, Glenn Maxwell and Joe Burns have been drafted into the squad for the fourth Test starting Friday, with Tim Payne set to captain the side in Johannesburg.
A nervous Sutherland hinted at lengthy bans during a press conference at his Johannesburg hotel.

England lost 4-0 to opponents who have since become mired in controversy after captain Steve Smith admitted he and batsman Cameron Bancroft hatched a plan to tamper with the ball in the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town.
Bancroft is now at the centre of more questions after footage showed him appearing to stuff sugar – a potential if unlikely abrasive – into his pocket during an interval in the final Test in Sydney,
TV cameras show Bancroft standing making a cup of tea while holding his pads when he spoons sugar from his right hand to his left. His hand then obscures from view and moves in the direction of his left pocket.
Whether England suffered at the hands of prohibited actions is now a burning question too.
Cricket Australia would not comment when asked if that incident and series – which England lost 4-0 – would be reviewed.
England bowler Stuart Broad said he had no reason to suspect Australia employed illegal tactics against them, but is struggling to work out why they have chosen to do so in South Africa.

Former Australian Test star Jason Gillespie accused Smith of playing a part in “pre-planned” cheating, adding in an article in the Guardian: “Steve Smith’s time as Australia captain is surely up.”

Smith, along with Cameron Bancroft, publicly admitted to trying to change the condition of the ball in order to gain an unfair advantage during the third day’s play in the Cape Town Test against South Africa.
A statement from the ICC read: ICC Chief Executive David Richardson laid the charge against Smith under to Article 2.2.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel which prohibits to ‘all types of conduct of a serious nature that is contrary to the spirit of the game’.
“Smith accepted the charge and the proposed sanction of two suspension points which equates to a ban for the next Test match and which will see four demerit points added to his record.”
If a player gets four demerit points within 24 months, he gets a one Test or two-limited over game ban.
If he gets eight demerit points within 24 months, the ban doubles.
Mr Richardson said: “The decision made by the leadership group of the Australian team to act in this way is clearly contrary to the spirit of the game, risks causing significant damage to the integrity of the match, the players and the sport itself and is therefore ‘serious’ in nature.
“As captain, Steve Smith must take full responsibility for the actions of his players and it is appropriate that he be suspended.”
“The game needs to have a hard look at itself. In recent weeks we have seen incidents of ugly sledging, send-offs, dissent against umpires’ decisions, a walk-off, ball tampering and some ordinary off-field behaviour.
“The ICC needs to do more to prevent poor behaviour and better police the spirit of the game, defining more clearly what is expected of players and enforcing the regulations in a consistent fashion.
“In addition and most importantly Member countries need to show more accountability for their teams’ conduct.
“Winning is important but not at the expense of the spirit of the game which is intrinsic and precious to the sport of cricket. We have to raise the bar across all areas.”
Additionally, Australia opener Cameron Bancroft has been fined 75 per cent of his match fee and handed three demerit points for breaching Level 2 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the third day’s play on Saturday.

Warner threw his support behind his embattled partner and implored Bancroft to transport himself back to the innings that earned him a baggy green in the first place.
Bancroft finds himself under early pressure this series after an early stumble in the first Test against South Africa in Durban compounded an unconvincing debut Ashes campaign and he has now gone seven innings without a score.
For a player who has had the best part of two months to clear his mind and prepare for South Africa’s quicks, Bancroft’s meek dismissal where he shuffled out of his crease and across to nick off to Vernon Philander was a concern.
Warner hasn’t forgotten the brilliant hundred Bancroft made for Western Australia against NSW’s all-Australian bowling attack to demand Test selection way back in November and last night urged his comrade not to lose sight of what he’s capable of.
Both men were dismissed before lunch on day one in Durban and then Bancroft spent the afternoon tapping into Warner’s wisdom for mental fortitude and positivity.
“We had a good conversation today. We sat upstairs for quite a while and I spoke to him about the way he approaches it,” said Warner.
“(I asked) do you feel like sometimes you have to go after the ball or is it nervous energy?
“He was quite insightful with what he was saying to me and I understood him and where he was coming from.
“He knows it was a soft dismissal. We spoke about it before at length.
“You look back at the Shield [runs] he scored against us and our bowling attack at Hurstville Oval. It was one of the best innings I’ve seen from him to date.
“I always talk to him about going back to that and thinking about ‘how did you go so well’ and ‘how can you replicate that on the big stage here’.
“It’s a different game, there’s a lot of pressure about … but I know he’s so focused on his preparation, you can’t fault that.
“It’s just not happening out there at the moment. It will happen, you just need a bit of luck in this game.”
As beneficial as Warner’s words might have been, Bancroft might have gotten even more out of watching the vice-captain’s batting on day one.
Without any red ball preparation to speak of for the first Test in Durban after flying in late from the Twenty20 internationals in New Zealand, Warner didn’t skip a beat as he carved out a classy half century.
Warner said decisiveness was the key to his ability to adapt — sage advice perhaps for Bancroft.
“I hit a lot of cricket balls the last three days,” said Warner.
“It’s just about being mentally fresh and coming in with a clear mind and being decisive with what you do and my intent and purpose at training was purely just to get volume in and making sure I’m making the right decisions. That I’m getting forward and getting back and playing the way that I do and that’s seeing the ball, hitting the ball. When I do that my defence is in check.
“The last couple of days I really got my volume in and we had an optional day (the day before) and I came down and hit for about two hours, probably more than I’ve ever done in my career before a game.
“But I had to do that because I needed to get the volume in and that’s how I switched it back on.”

The 25-year-old rookie has struggled ever since his debut Test and there is pressure on him to fire in Sydney as batting candidates Joe Burns, Glenn Maxwell and Peter Handscomb lodge their claims.
England have gotten on top of Bancroft, particularly with the short ball.
Bancroft said he won’t waste energy worrying about his job security, instead he wants to be a man of action who simply goes out and does something about it at the SCG.
David Warner is a man who always views the game with a glass half full, and even when he’s going through a lean patch, he will back himself until the big hundred is made.
Bancroft has witnessed Warner do just that this series, bouncing back from missing out in Adelaide and Perth to producing a blazing performance at the MCG.
Renowned as perhaps the hardest trainer in all of domestic cricket, Bancroft hasn’t found his work ethic short of par in the Australian set-up, but he looks at Warner and realises how he must strive to understand his game just as deeply.
“I’ve learnt he brings a lot of positive intent to the crease and that’s been really, really good for me to be part of and for me to be able to bat with him,” said Bancroft.
“He’s scored a hundred and an (86) in the last game, but even he’s gone through periods early in the series where he was challenged.
“To watch him learn from that and keep trusting himself and keep backing himself, he’s got no fear to go out and play his game.
“He plays differently to me but just to be able to watch that … he’s been absolutely fantastic.
“There’s other people out there in the world who can do all that worrying for me.
“Playing at this level it’s all about confidence and all about belief. The only way you can do that is by action.
“Life rewards action.”
Bancroft believes a season in county cricket last winter was the catalyst behind his incredible rise into the Australian XI, and says he’ll be returning to England this year in a bid to sharpen his credentials for the next Ashes on UK soil in 2019.
“I attribute a lot of my development and improvement, particularly in the past 12 months, to being able to expose myself (to different conditions) and play over there,” he said.
“It’s been a great learning curve (this summer) and I think I’ve been starting really well, it’s just about trusting that and knowing that I’m good enough to go on and get a really big score.”

Will there be another season of Bancroft?
ITV has not yet announced if there will be another season of Bancroft.
The show was aired over four consecutive nights this week and proved to be a hit with viewers.
However, the loose ends and unresolved ending left many viewers frustrated.
At the same time, the show has left the door open for a second run.
Bancroft was originally due to be aired on ITV Encore, the broadcaster’s subscription channel.
However, the miniseries got bumped up to a prime time slot on ITV due to a last-minute scheduling change.
The show replaced the Hatton Garden Heist with Timothy Spall that was set to be broadcast on ITV.

Who will be in Bancroft season 2?
Sarah Parish is most likely to return as the title character of the detective drama, Detective Superintendent Elizabeth Bancroft, even though she was revealed to be the killer.
Game of Thrones star Faye Marsay could also be making a comeback as DS Katherine Stevens, even though she was shot by Bancroft and left seriously wounded.
It also seems likely that Adrian Edmonson will reprise his role as Bancroft’s rival Cliff Walker.
What happened in Bancroft season 1?
The dark four-part ITV thriller saw Bancroft joining forces with colleague Stevens after the latter began investigating a cold murder case.
They were looking into the death of Laura Fraser, who was killed in 1990 in a brutal stabbing.
They initially struggled to find any evidence but eventually the truth came spilling out with a huge twist about the killer.
Central character Bancroft was forced to reveal secrets from her own past as well.
Nevertheless the finale failed to reach a decisive conclusion after Stevens was shot by Bancroft in a shock cliffhanger.

Twitter was inundated by shocked users as Elizabeth Bancroft (played Sarah Parish) seemingly got away with a brutal murder and even got promoted in the process.
The ITV drama, which was aired over four consecutive nights, failed to bring justice to the policewoman, who was being investigated by her colleague Katherine Stevens (Faye Marsay).
Many were left asking if a second series was on the cards, after it ended with Katherine lying in hospital after being shot by the truly evil superintendent.
However, Elizabeth’s motive to stab pregnant Laura Fraser (Lily Sacofsky) was finally exposed, as the pair were having an affair until the latter told her it was all over.
Two users tweeted: “Well that was a totally s**t ending to the four-part drama series #Bancroft,” and: “What a totally rubbish ending! She got away with it… #Bancroft.”
“Just invested four nights in #Bancroft for a really disappointing ending. Why can’t they ever just end a good story properly?” a third asked.
Others agreed: “Well disappointed with how #Bancroft ended. She basically got away with murder. Not happy at all. #itv,” and: “C’mon @ITV, really? #Bancroft.”
A fourth went on: “Sorry @ITV, did I blink and miss something? Hardly wrapped up #Bancroft to a satisfactory end! Is Stephens alive? Where was the justice? Poor!”
Meanwhile, others had been left gobsmacked at Elizabeth’s attempts to kill Katherine while on a guns bust earlier in the instalment.
“#Bancroft well well well did not expected that,” one person stated, as another went on: “Wasn’t sure at first but #Bancroft gets better every night – final episode is AMAZING.”
“#Bancroft s**t half an hour to conclude it all. Best episode by far tonight,” someone else added.
