Update: It’s New Year’s eve and Ars staffers are enjoying a winter break (inevitably filled with some joy rides and whatever that choose-your-own Black Mirror thing is). As such, we’re resurfacing a few favorites from the site archives appropriate for the occasion—like this tour of a facility that will inevitably be busy post-holidays. Our story on the Sims Municipal Recycling Center originally ran on December 7, 2015, and it appears unchanged below.

BROOKLYN, New York—A conveyor belt is keeping material flying past at speeds that require both concentration and rapid eye movement if you wanted to track a single item. Above the constant roar of all the heavy equipment, it’s just possible to make out the brief hissing of jets of high-pressure air. Those jets are produced where the conveyor belt ends, and most of the material plunges onto a second belt below. Each hiss, however, causes a carefully chosen item to leap off the end of the belt and soar into a different collection area, where yet another conveyor belt takes it on its way.

The process of carefully choosing which items to sift out is all done without human intervention. It’s based on how that object reflects light that’s outside the range of human vision.

The viral video shows the man, wearing shoes, jeans and a shirt standing proudly on a rock surrounded by water, a few feet away from the shore of a lake.

His pose – hands hooked in pockets – and satisfied smile suggest he’s pretty impressed with himself for having reached the rock without getting wet.

However, he then tries to step over to a smaller nearby rock – and things start to go wrong.

The man readies himself and lunges over to the stepping stone. His right foot lands squarely on it but as he places his left foot down he loses balance.

He starts to wobble and puts his hands out to steady himself – but it’s of no use. His leg plunges down into the water.

Determined to achieve his objective – and without looking up at his friend filming – he immediately tries to clamber back up onto the rock. 

But as he does so his hand slips and he falls completely face first into the water.

He lies in the water spread eagled for a couple of seconds before getting to his feet.

The filming stops before the viewer is shown whether he found the embarrassing experience funny, awkward or painful. 

Online users have loved the viral clip. “For just a moment he thought about not getting back up,” one wrote.

“I thought he stepped on a turtle,” another added.

“I like how he accepted defeat,” a third viewer commented on the man’s misery.

Another viral video of a highly embarrassing moment was recently captured of a beautiful young woman.

As the video starts, she starts running forward before turning and smiling at the camera.

By turning to the camera, she doesn’t spot the low bush in front of her.

As she turns back around, she stumbles onto it and falls over, landing on her back.

Thankfully her long dress protects her modesty as her arms and legs fly into the air.

A third viral tumble was caught when a young woman fell off a cliff after regretting making the jump and attempted to climb back up.

She quickly grabbed on, only to slip off into the water below.

Another young woman on holiday attempted to jump on a rope swing. She failed to hold on and landed in the water below, laughing at herself. The woman in question was later revealed to be Michelle Jenneke, the 24-year-old Olympic gymnast.

Together places players in a loving relationship with someone they care about, but asks them how they can take care of themselves when that love starts to die, or their partner starts needing so much from them that they have little left for their own well-being.

In Together, the interactions seem quite simple. Players can choose to guide their heart over to choices that fall down from the top of the screen, catching them with their heart to do them or avoiding them to not. However, there are not obvious good and bad choices, but instead a variety of ways of caring for yourself and your partner. Each of these choices fills and drains the player’s love, compassion, and stress, each taking their toll no matter who they try to take care of.

Through these choices, Together aims to explore how taxing a relationship can be, especially with a partner you love who may require a lot from you, or one who is growing more distant, or one you simply cannot care for because you need a lot of work yourself. By making the right choices, will you be able to save this relationship without losing yourself, or will every road lead down its own doomed end to this love story? The answer, like in real life, is not an easy one.

It’s no secret that Overwatch players are precious about the game’s balance changes. On the internet, fans act as armchair game devs, flooding the Overwatch forums with strongly-worded opinions whenever there’s an unpopular or surprising change. Most recently, the forums overflowed with salt after the popular tank hero D.va received a brutal nerf, making her far less powerful. For months, players begged Blizzard to revive the old D.va.

At an Overwatch anniversary event in New York on Wednesday, Overwatch game director Jeff Kaplan told me that his personal “low point of the year” was tied to that balance patch. But he does not regret nerfing D.va. His low point, he says, was leaving her overpowered too long.

Late last year, the Overwatch team gave the hero D.va a huge buff. She became an agile fighter, more mobile while firing her gun. Her mech suit’s health skyrocketed from 100 to 200. And it became much easier to charge her ultimate ability, which often kills two or three enemies at a time. In the patch notes, the Overwatch team explained that the changes would help the tank hero “withstand attacks, which will allow her to keep pressuring enemies.”

Then, Blizzard turned off its lights for Christmas, postponing any balance changes for at least a few weeks. “People were burned out,” Kaplan said. He and Overwatch’s seven other designers took a vacation to visit their families over the holidays, when Blizzard essentially shuts down. Of course, Kaplan and Overwatch’s dev team didn’t take a vacation from games, or, apparently, from looking at Overwatch play data. D.va was way overpowered. She had become too essential to the meta and too difficult to kill.

“We [Overwatch lead designer Geoff Goodman and I] were literally talking through Steam chat about how we’re gonna nerf D.va and as soon as we got back,” Kaplan said. (He wondered whether Valve president Gabe Newell was reading his chats, laughing, “All Blizzard secrets are probably available in Steam chat.”)

Players got used to D.va’s strength over that Christmas break. So, in January, when Blizzard nerfed her, the forums went mad. Popular complaints described the new D.va as squishy, ineffective and not a true tank hero. Kaplan doesn’t regret the nerf, though. Of her current state, Kaplan says, “D.va is totally fine.”

In a few instances, the Overwatch team has been quick to roll back dramatic changes after strong player feedback. In March, Bastion received a huge boost that Blizzard reversed just a few days later. Players barely had a chance to learn how to counter him. It’s easy to forget that there’s a learning curve after developers make big changes. Describing his decision to scale down Bastion’s power, Kaplan wrote in an Overwatch forum post, “Balance changes can be very difficult to make when emotions run so high in the community.”

But why was Bastion scaled back so quickly? “Part of the quick response to Bastion, it’s sort of like, D.va’s our Alamo,” Kaplan said today. “If we put something in and leave it for too long, the players will gravitate towards that and it’s going to be hard to back people off.”
