Noel Fielding was asked to leave the Great British Bake Off Tent after one of his jokes failed to garner a reaction from the contestants. Matt Lucas demanded his Channel 4 co-host leave the tent when silence descended on the tent following Noel’s attempt to make his co-stars laugh at the signature bake challenge.

Matt began: “You made it you’re in the final and it’s your last ever Signature challenge.

“The judges would like you to bake eight beautiful decorated custard slices.”

“Noel, are you a fan of custard?” Matt asked.

“I love custard. I was very upset when I heard general custard had died at the battle of little creme horn,” Noel joked.

After Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood had tasted all three Signatures, Peter appeared to be in first position, followed by Dave, then Laura.

The Technical was a Walnut Whirl and once again Laura struggled to execute the tricky bake.

Dave was crowned the winner of the Technical, while the youngest ever finalist came second followed by Laura.

Ahead of the Showstopper, Matt asked whether Laura could still win the series.

Great British Bake Off: Channel 4 star’s heartbreaking confession on father exposed https://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-channel-4-stars-heartbreaking-confession-on-father-exposed/ https://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-channel-4-stars-heartbreaking-confession-on-father-exposed/#respond Wed, 30 Sep 2020 22:02:37 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-channel-4-stars-heartbreaking-confession-on-father-exposed/

The popular Channel 4 baking show is into its second week and already contestants have caused a stir. In the first week of ‘Bake Off’, Sura accidentally knocked fellow competitor Dave’s pineapple upside-down cakes onto the floor. Yesterday viewers vented after Mak was eliminated instead of Rowan, whose show stopper was described as “tasting like rubber”. In addition to the TV show dramas, new presenter Matt Lucas was cast in place of Sandi Toksvig, who quit the show earlier this year. The host has divided public opinion so far. Some took offence to his impersonation of Prime Minister Boris Johnson‘s “bumbling coronavirus briefing”, which received hundreds of Ofcom complaints.

Prior to landing the presenting job on ‘Bake Off’ alongside Noel Fielding, Lucas was best known for his comedic sketches with former ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ judge David Walliams.

They starred in the BBC hits ‘Little Britain’ and ‘Come Fly With Me’, both of which have attracted criticism in recent months over their portrayal of black characters.

Lucas said: “If I could go back and do ‘Little Britain’ again, I wouldn’t make those jokes about transvestites. I wouldn’t play black characters. Basically I wouldn’t make the show now.”

He admitted there was “no bad intent” behind their gags and their only crime was “greed” – because they wanted “to show off what a diverse bunch of people we could play”.

The star believed his humour was nurtured from an early age, shortly after he developed alopecia at the age of six.

He told Big Issue magazine in 2017: “People asked me about it every day… I told people I’d had a car accident when I was four and the shock had made it fall out because that’s what I believed at the time.

“Then I developed a repertoire of jokes in response to being asked about it, feigning surprise at the information that I was bald.

“I had this wig I’d worn as a kid and I’d bring it into college for a laugh.”

The stigma attached to being hairless during his school years was also coupled with his fear about coming out as gay.

Lucas claimed his teenage self would be “very, very shocked” that he was “able to live a fulfilling and loving life a gay man”.

He was married TV producer Kevin McGee in a civil partnership in 2006 but had it dissolved two years later – and the following year his former partner died from suicide.

He added: “That was not something I thought was ever on the cards.

“The idea that my family and friends would accept me and then almost forget about my being gay, that would have been a huge relief.”

Despite his openness about his sexuality, the one person who he was never able to tell was his father.

Lucas said: “I found out, four years after he died, that my dad had told my aunt he’d worked out I was gay and said ‘He loved me and just wanted me to be happy’.

“I was happy to hear it but I wish he’d said it to me at the time. It would have saved me a lot of anxiety.

“But he was waiting for me to tell him and he probably thought we had plenty of time ahead of us.”

By the time his aunt told him about his father’s secret support of his sexuality, he had “come out to most people”.

Lucas said: “So I was beyond craving acceptance and I was moving on to the next phase of my life.

“It felt like that was the postscript to those years of worry, a final resolution.”

After Lucas was confirmed as the new host of ‘Bake Off’, he revealed that similarly to Noel Fielding he had an audition at a garden centre.

There he had to “interview people” to test how he got on with strangers of all ages.

In a bid to keep his audition secret, he had to tell inquisitive passersby that he was working on a “horticultural show”.

In April, Lucas told ‘Good Morning Britain’ that he was attracted to the role because of the ‘perks’ of the job.

He quipped: “Free cake are you kidding it’s a no brainer! They were talking to various people and apparently Noel had a dream that I was the co-presenter.”

Within the opening moments, the programme’s narrator gave some insight into how the show was able to go ahead.

There was much uncertainty surrounding how it would work, with it being revealed the bakers had to say goodbye to their families for the duration.

The show’s voiceover explained to viewers: “Like everyone up and down the country, the Bake Off has had to make some changes.

“To save this year’s competition, the bakers have agreed to leave their homes and move into the Bake Off bubble!”

Ant said to Anthony: “Now, we put you through your paces in the gym, didn’t we?”

The heavyweight champ replied: “Something like that,” to which Dec interrupted: “Here’s what happened when Anthony Joshua here was looking to hire a new personal chef.

“But he didn’t really need a chef because we were already cooking up a very tasty, I’m A Celebrity…” he continued, with his co-host then joining in to complete the title of the segment.

Ant committed the blunder by saying “Get Me Out Of Here!”, his other half was correct with “Get Out My Ear” and looked at his fellow presenter in disbelief at the error.

Great British Bake Off: Derry Girls crate chaos in the tent https://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-derry-girls-crate-chaos-in-the-tent/ https://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-derry-girls-crate-chaos-in-the-tent/#respond Thu, 02 Jan 2020 00:28:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-derry-girls-crate-chaos-in-the-tent/

Saoirse-Monica Jackson, Nicola Coughlan, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell, Dylan Llewellyn and Siobhan McSweeney all appear in the Channel 4 comedy – based in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. They attempted to impress judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood with an alcohol-laced trifle for their signature challenge. But a few of them tucked into the booze early as they whipped up sponges, jelly and custard.

Prue told Dylan, 27, the layers of his Bakewell trifle are “a bit casual”, while she branded Saoirse-Monica’s effort “a bit messy and smeary”.

Paul told Siobhan her trifle “looks like an aquarium,” while Prue added: “It does look like slime.”

For the showstopper, the contestants had to make a two-tiered cake based on their favourite decade.

Dylan crafted a 60s camper van using lemon cake, while Jamie-Lee, 28, fashioned the plane Amelia Earhart landed in Londonderry in the 1930s out of coconut cream cake.

Nicola, 32, prepared a bowler inspired by 1930s film Berlin, while Saoirse-Monica, 26, made a 1960s peace and love lemon and blueberry cake.

Siobhan, whose chocolate raspberry cake was in memory of family camping trips to Cork in the 1980s, later joked: “I’ve basically ruined the memory of my mother and father.”

After the final challenge Nicola said: “I am a broken woman,” while Saoirse-Monica added: “I don’t think it could have gone any worse.”

Great British Bake Off: Contestant’s winning ‘advantage’ revealed in Paul Hollywood link? https://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-contestants-winning-advantage-revealed-in-paul-hollywood-link/ https://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-contestants-winning-advantage-revealed-in-paul-hollywood-link/#respond Tue, 20 Aug 2019 08:07:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-contestants-winning-advantage-revealed-in-paul-hollywood-link/

Great British Bake Off is back with a brand new series, ready to take over the nation with exceptional showstoppers and hopefully no more iconic Baked Alaska disasters.

Ahead of the show kicking off later this month, the full contestant line-up has been revealed and this year, there are 13 amateur bakers taking part.

Channel 4 has lined up a diverse array of hopefuls for the tent, including Dan who made his own wedding cake and Steph who cleverly hides vegetables in her bakes.

But one contestant has revealed they have a secret link to the tent and in particular Paul Hollywood. Doesthis mean they have a slight advantage because they know extensively how the show works?

Henry, 20, who studies at Durham University started baking after the Bake Off tent pitched up in his home town’s local park eight years ago.

Since that day, he has been practicing and perfecting his baking skills to allow him to enter the competition.

Discussing the opportunity to take part in the fan-favourite competition, he said: “I have wanted to get into the tent since series two.

“They used to film the show at the end of my road, and I’d see Paul Hollywood when I walked to school in the mornings, so to be inside the actual tent was totally wonderful!”

During the application process, the contestants were tasked with making a cake which signifies one of the happiest days of your life.

Henry spoke about his choice: “One of the most lovely days I had was at Uni this year, we had an end of year party where everyone was totally relaxed.

“It would be quite a busy, chaotic cake flavoured with alcohol to represent the party. Maybe with a kahlua coffee drizzle and vodka buttercream icing,” he explained.

As for the public’s response to the new line-up, many fans took to Twitter to share their opinions.

A few noted how young the contestants were, with some questioning the representation of the older generation.

“Where’s the older man/woman?” Someone asked while another chimed: “They are all so young! That’s good, don’t get me wrong, but it’s nice to see older bakers with their tried and trusted recipes and methods in the tent x.”

Others suggested a few tweaks to the challenges which have previously been given, especially during last year’s final when contestants were tasked with making pitta breads on an open fire outside.

“Those fire pits were ludicrous. Hopefully this year they’ll keep the focus on, y’know, actual baking…” A tweet read.

“And the chandelier!” Another added in reference to biscuit week during series nine.

Joining Paul in the judging process is Prue Leith and this will be her third time in the role.

Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding are also back as they present one of the nation’s favourite television shows.

As for the future of the Great British Bake Off, fans can rejoice because there are going to be at least two more series.

Channel 4 secured Love Productions’ show until 2021, meaning there are at least two more opportunities to see soggy bottoms and baking disasters.

Broadcasting boss Ian Katz said in a statement: “Over the last two years The Great British Bake Off has become one of the best loved programmes on Channel 4, embodying the warmth, mischief and inclusivity for which the channel is known.”

Great British Bake Off returns to Channel 4 on Tuesday 27 August at 8pm.

Great British Bake Off 2018 WINNER: Rahul Mandal breaks down after winning Channel 4 show https://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-2018-winner-rahul-mandal-breaks-down-after-winning-channel-4-show/ https://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-2018-winner-rahul-mandal-breaks-down-after-winning-channel-4-show/#respond Tue, 30 Oct 2018 22:29:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-2018-winner-rahul-mandal-breaks-down-after-winning-channel-4-show/

Tonight’s final of The 2018 saw Kim-Joy Hewlett, Rahul Mandal and Ruby Bhogal battle it out to be crowned winner.

After three explosive rounds, Rahul was announced the winner as the finalist’s friends and family gathered outside of the tent.

Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith were delighted with the winner.

It was the largest crowd a Bake Off final had ever seen, host Noel Fielding announced.

Prue said: “I think the amazing thing about Rahul and why I am so proud of him is that he came in unconfident, but he just kept going, and he never reined in his ambition, he always tried to do a bit more than everybody else, and it paid off.”

Paul added: “He is one of those characters that you will miss when you are not with him.

“You know his intensity sometimes is amazing, and he is so good at what he does, but I don’t think he realises still how good he actually is and I think that’s what’s magic about Rahul.”

At the end of the show, Rahul was shown on the phone with his mother in India breaking the news.

His mother replied that she had been praying continuously that he would win.

The final scene showed Rahul with his parents after the show with his Channel 4 trophy.

Winner Rahul, who is originally from Kolkata, India, now lives in Rotherham.

He said: “I have no idea what the reaction will be back home.

“An Indian paper published a story recently about me taking part, and the family were surprised as I didn’t really tell anyone at home that I was taking part, so they will get a shock when they see the result.”

Rahul added that the show has been a learning experience, saying he had picked up a lot from host Noel.

He said: “I loved Noel’s sense of humour although I didn’t always get what he was talking about.

“But I now know who Luke Skywalker is and what a fist bump is.”

Rahul added: “I watched the final with my parents who are over from India, and friends and colleagues.

“It was very emotional but it was lovely to have the people who have helped me throughout my Bake Off journey watch it with me.

“After winning, at home I wrapped the trophy in a pillowcase, and I am quite messy, so it looked hidden amongst the clothes and laundry in the linen cupboard.”

The  is available to re-watch on All 4 now.

Great British Bake Off 2018: Rahul Mandal reveals SECRET finale advice from Paul Hollywood https://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-2018-rahul-mandal-reveals-secret-finale-advice-from-paul-hollywood/ https://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-2018-rahul-mandal-reveals-secret-finale-advice-from-paul-hollywood/#respond Tue, 30 Oct 2018 18:14:55 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-2018-rahul-mandal-reveals-secret-finale-advice-from-paul-hollywood/

The 30-year-old research scientist has gone from strength to strength on The Great British Bake Off and has fast become one of the fan-favourites on the Channel 4 baking competition.

The Rotherham contestant then suffered his first setback two weeks ago as he received his first real criticism from celebrity baker Paul, 52, and South African chef and restaurateur Prue.

Luckily, Rahul managed to pull back his talent and skill in the kitchen, and the quarter finals and semi finals saw French contestant Manon Lagreve and Briony Williams depart the tent respectively.

As the competition reaches boiling point in tonight’s instalment, many have wondered if Rahul’s nerves will get the better of him at the last hurdle. But have the judges given him some secret advice to win the entire show?

Speaking to TV Times magazine, the finalist reflected on his time on the series.

“I went into Bake Off to learn and I was not disappointed,” he said. “The advice from Paul and Prue regarding baking is amazing.”

The contestant went on to admit he has really struggled with believing in himself and his abilities on the series.

“The best lesson I should have learnt is ‘to be confident’,” he shared. “Which I am still trying to be.”

In terms of who his biggest fans are, Rahul sweetly praised his parents for their unwavering support during his time in the iconic white tent.

He said: “My biggest supporters are my parents and colleagues. They are my biggest critics, too.

“Their honest criticisms have helped me a lot.”

Rahul also shed light on his plans now the series is coming to a close, and revealed whether he will still be baking up a storm.

“I am willing to accept new challenges,” he continued. “Learn new skills and push my boundaries to explore new baking horizons.”

“Let’s see what happens next!” the star added.

Tonight’s finale will see Kim-Joy, Rahul and Ruby Bhogal battle it out to be crowned the winner of the Channel 4 series.

The contestants form an evenly-matched trio, as all have managed to receive the title of Star Baker twice.

Tonight’s finale includes some unusual challenges, and Ruby, Kim-Joy and Rahul are set to stamp their mark on doughnuts and edible landscapes.

For the first time in the series’ history, the remaining contestants will also create a technical challenge that’s baked outside the tent on open fires.

Last year’s winner Sophie Faldo will finally pass the baton on to one of the three hopefuls tonight, but who will it be?

Great British Bake Off concludes tonight at 8pm on Channel 4.

Great British Bake Off 2018: Mel Giedroyc makes blunt confession about Channel 4 reboot https://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-2018-mel-giedroyc-makes-blunt-confession-about-channel-4-reboot/ https://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-2018-mel-giedroyc-makes-blunt-confession-about-channel-4-reboot/#respond Tue, 18 Sep 2018 16:39:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/great-british-bake-off-2018-mel-giedroyc-makes-blunt-confession-about-channel-4-reboot/

Great British Bake Off began its life on the BBC and quickly became an institution with comedy duo Mel and Sue Perkins as presenters.

The show’s judges completed the team with national treasure Mary Berry and celebrity baker Paul Hollywood.

Yet when the series was bought by Channel 4 in an auction two years ago things rapidly changed.

Mel and Sue jumped ship together, and were quickly followed by Mary, all claiming their loyalties lay with the BBC.

Paul insisted he loved his job too much to give it up, and was later joined by comedians Sandi Toksvig, Noel Fielding and South African chef Prue Leith for the series’ reboot last year.

In scenes set to air on Saturday’s edition of the Jonathan Ross Show on ITV, Mel admitted she hasn’t kept up with the show and her old colleague Paul.

Asked whether she was tuning in to the latest series, which features early favourites Manon Lagreve and Rahul Mandal, she said: “No I haven’t [watched it]. I feel bad!”

“Not at all!” the host then confessed, addressing whether she regretted leaving the hugely-popular ratings monster.

Mel, 50, has previously said her decision to quit the Great British Bake Off was so easy it only took her “three seconds”, after being told it would no longer air on the BBC.

Despite this, it’s been bittersweet for those that departed the show, and Mel in particular misses the cast and crew.

“I think there was no question where we were heading,” she told Press Association last year. “But I miss the gang… we were like a big family.

“All the camera guys, the sound guys, home economists behind the scenes, so knowing a lot of them are there filming as we speak, it feels kind of strange.”

Saturday’s Jonathan Ross will also see Mel talk honestly about her age and choices going forward towards the next phase of her life.

“I don’t like it when people lie about their age,” she stated. “I think if you’re 50 you just ruddy say it. I am 50.”

The Light Lunch host continued: “I’ve had a really brilliant idea, it came to me the other week… We are all getting older, I’m going to get all of my friends to join in a commune.

“We’re going to sell our properties, live in a commune, hire some very hot carers and then all see each other out in a commune.

“Wouldn’t that be fun!… It’s like shuffling off your mortal coil. Dying. To see each other out in your older years…

“Jonathan, you are very much warmly invited as well… It’s the way forward. I’m talking about twenty years time,” she added with a giggle.

The Jonathan Ross Show airs on Saturday at 9.15pm on ITV, and Great British Bake Off continutes tonight at 8pm on Channel 4.

Bake Off 2018 episode 4: What is the theme for Week 4? https://briefnews.eu/bake-off-2018-episode-4-what-is-the-theme-for-week-4/ https://briefnews.eu/bake-off-2018-episode-4-what-is-the-theme-for-week-4/#respond Wed, 12 Sep 2018 03:42:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bake-off-2018-episode-4-what-is-the-theme-for-week-4/

The Great British Bake Off 2018 was back on screens tonight with Bread Week.

The third episodes in the new run of the Channel 4 series saw the bakers take to the tent for three bread-related challenges.

Their Signature challenge was Chelsea Buns, the Technical was a batch of garlic naan bread and the Showstopper was to create a tiered Korovai, which is an eastern European celebration bread.

In the end, Antony was sent home and Rahul was named Star Baker for the second week in a row.

What is the theme for Week 4 on Bake Off 2018?

Next week’s theme on The Great British Bake Off 2018 is Dessert Week.

The official synopsis for the episode reads: “It’s Dessert Week and judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood have set three sticky challenges to test the remaining nine bakers.

“There is a cracking meringue Signature; a wobbly Technical that breaks the mould; and a complex chocolate Showstopper that promises to reveal all.

“Which bakers impress Prue and Paul enough to keep their place in the tent? And who will be heading home?”

HOW TO MAKE KOROVAI CELEBRATION BREAD

Next week, the bakers will be attempting a Roulade for their Signature Challenge.

A roulade is a type of sponge cake rolled around some kind of cream filling.

The rolling of the cake is the tricky part as the dough can crack or break.

For the Technical challenge, the bakers will be using moulds to bake a “tricky” dessert that will need to set in time.

GREAT BRITISH BAKE OFF 2018 CONTESTANTS

In the promo for next week, it looks like ether jelly moulds or bundt tins are being used.

And for their Showstoppers, the bakers will be making melting chocolate creations that are set to see tensions raised in the heat of the tent.

The promo shows the bakers attempting to build towers of what looks like tempered chocolate shapes and spheres, complete with melting chocolate to reveal even more surprises inside.

However, the bakes will have to deal with warm temperatures in the tent affecting their chocolate which could end up melting in all the wrong places.

IS PAUL HOLLYWOOD MARRIED?

The last Dessert Week was in 2016 when the bakers were challenged to make a roulade for the Signature, a Marjolaine for the Technical and ice cream mousse cakes for the Showstopper.

The Bakers left are Ruby, Rahul, Kim-Joy, Manon, Terry, Karen, John, Briony and Dan.

The Great British Bake Off 2018 continues next Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4
