  • US airlines have "mishandled" over 1.4 million bags since the beginning of this year.
  • American Airlines was ranked as having the worst mishandled baggage rate out of all US carriers. 
  • Travelers are sharing horror stories about luggage lost amid this summer's travel chaos. 

US airlines just received their latest report card from the Department of Transportation, and the grades are bleak across the board — particularly in the baggage department. 

Every US airline listed in the August Air Travel Consumer Report has "mishandled" a higher percentage of bags between January and June 2022 compared to the same period last year. Several airlines, including Delta and United, nearly tripled the total number of bags lost. 

American Airlines reported a lost baggage rate of 0.93 mishandled bags per 100 enplaned, worse than any other airline on the list. That translates to 300,590 bags lost by the airline so far this year. 

American was followed by Alaska Airlines, JetBlue, and United in the DOT rankings, which reported a 0.75%, 0.70%, and 0.64% mishandled baggage rate, respectively. In total, US airlines have lost over 1.4 million bags since the beginning of this year.

One American Airlines passenger told Insider's Grace Dean that a stranger discovered her lost luggage in Hamburg more than six weeks after her fight — even though the airline doesn't fly there and she hadn't visited Germany.

Amid many lost luggage horror stories like these this summer, understaffed airlines and third party baggage contractors have struggled to handle pent-up travel demand. 

Delta Airlines dropped down two spots from its 2021 ranking to sixth-place with a mishandled baggage rate of 0.61%. The airline mishandled 230,142 pieces of luggage between January and June 2022, compared to 69,376 during the same time period last year. 

The five airlines with the lowest rate of mishandled baggage for the first half of 2022 were Allegiant Air, Hawaiian Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Spirit Airlines, in that order.

  • An Army Special Forces veteran pleaded guilty to two drug trafficking conspiracy counts, admitting he attempted to smuggle nearly 90 pounds of cocaine from Colombia. 
  • Master Sgt. Daniel Gould was charged in August after officials at the US Embassy in Bogota discovered cocaine in gutted-out punching bags.
  • An X-ray scan revealed the cocaine stash in the bags before they were loaded on a military aircraft bound for Florida.

A highly decorated Army Special Forces soldier pleaded guilty to charges of drug trafficking conspiracy, admitting he attempted to smuggle nearly 90 pounds of cocaine from Colombia to Florida aboard a military aircraft in August 2018.

Master Sgt. Daniel Gould first smuggled 10 kilograms of the narcotic in early 2018, according to the US Attorney’s statement. A co-defendant in the trial traveled to Colombia with the payment for the first load, which Gould then placed in a gutted-out punching bag.

Among all of its other issues since launch, some of the most dedicated Fallout fans ran into a surprising issue with their $ 200 “Power Armor Edition” box for Fallout 76. Despite promo materials that promised a “West Tek Canvas Carrying Bag” for the included wearable T-51 helmet, what arrived was a much more cheaply-built nylon bag. Bethesda tried to apologize by granting players 500 atoms (in-game currency worth about $ 5) last week, but now it’s going to live up to the advertisement — even if it’s a bit late.

In a tweet, Bethesda announced it’s “finalizing manufacturing plans for replacement canvas bags” and said Collector’s Edition purchasers should fill out a ticket by the end of January. There’s no ship date specified for the bags, but at this point we just want to see something delivered that is more like what gamers thought they were getting. If they’re at all disappointed by the game itself that could be a more complicated fix, but another update is rolling out today with balances, fixes and expanded stash storage. In good news for console players, while it’s still a larger patch than the one for PC at 3GB vs. 36MB, at least it won’t mean reinstalling the entire game (this time).

World’s fastest man Usain Bolt has bagged his first goals as a footballer for Central Coast Mariners with two goals during a friendly match as his trial period for the Australian A-League side continues.

Jamaican sprint legend Bolt, who still holds the current 9.58 seconds world 100m record, called time on his track career in 2017 and since has cosistently made mention of his intentions to embark on a professional football career.

There were rumors Bolt could have made an appearance for English Premier League club Manchester United, largely eminating from the man himself and owing to his professed love of the club.

In August, Bolt made his debut for the Mariners, coming off the bench during a 6-1 pre-season rout against amateur outfit Central Coast Select.

The budget airline also cut flights on Saturday and yesterday. European services, including those to Dublin, Cork, Barcelona and Budapest, were called off, leaving passengers stranded.

A handwritten notice in the luggage area reads: “For Ryanair cancelled flights. Please collect your baggage from Reclaim Four. Please rebook your flights online or on Ryanair app.”

The rows of abandoned luggage include baby buggies, rucksacks and plastic bags.

Passengers were still looking for their luggage after at least five more flights were cancelled yesterday.

Ryanair said: “Due to thunderstorms in Stansted on Friday Ryanair were forced to cancel a number of flights.

“The knock-on effect of this and air traffic control shortages caused further disruptions on Saturday including delays and cancellations.

“Affected customers have been notified by email and text and advised of their options of a refund or free move to the next available flight.

“Ryanair sincerely apologises for these weather and ATC disruptions which are entirely beyond our control.”

A woman who for years went by the name “Bitcoin Maven” on localbitcoins.com—a peer-to-peer website for buying and selling anonymous bitcoins in-person—was sentenced Monday to 366 days in federal prison, three years of supervised release, and a $ 20,000 fine.

While selling bitcoins is not inherently illegal, doing so in such large volumes without keeping extensive records to mitigate money laundering is.

Federal prosecutors in Los Angeles called the case against Theresa Lynn Tetley—a 50-year-old former stockbroker who bought and sold several million dollars worth of bitcoins—the first of its kind in the region.
