BAFTA TV Awards 2019: Tess Daly mortified as Graham Norton makes HUGE Strictly swipe https://briefnews.eu/bafta-tv-awards-2019-tess-daly-mortified-as-graham-norton-makes-huge-strictly-swipe/ https://briefnews.eu/bafta-tv-awards-2019-tess-daly-mortified-as-graham-norton-makes-huge-strictly-swipe/#respond Sun, 12 May 2019 19:54:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bafta-tv-awards-2019-tess-daly-mortified-as-graham-norton-makes-huge-strictly-swipe/

BAFTA aired its TV Awards for 2019 this evening and saw Graham Norton push the boundaries on the show with his opening monologue.

And while he hit upon many different aspects from the TV world and controversies throughout the year, one comment seemingly made Tess Daly a little uncomfortable.

Graham began talking about Line of Duty and the incredible interview scenes in the crime drama.

But he went on to connect the show to Strictly Come Dancing.

He cheekily announced: “The interviews! They were incredible.

“A more forensically detailed interrogation of times, dates, and mobile phone data hasn’t been seen since that time Seann Walsh got home late from Strictly practice.”

And this comment appeared to be enough to send Strictly host Tess Daly into turmoil.

She shook her head before shutting her eyes, as her partner in crime Claudia Winkleman stifled a laugh.

Graham himself laughed once again, before adding: “I know, I know!

“Yep, you snog one dancer!”

More to follow…

Bohemian Rhapsody: WATCH Rami Malek’s BAFTA speech ‘Freddie Mercury was GREATEST outsider’ https://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-watch-rami-maleks-bafta-speech-freddie-mercury-was-greatest-outsider/ https://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-watch-rami-maleks-bafta-speech-freddie-mercury-was-greatest-outsider/#respond Mon, 11 Feb 2019 03:53:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bohemian-rhapsody-watch-rami-maleks-bafta-speech-freddie-mercury-was-greatest-outsider/

Following his Best Actor wins at the and , it wasn’t a big surprise that Malek took the same gong at the BAFTAs. While he missed out on the Critics’ Choice Award to Christian Bale for Vice, Malek now looks incredibly likely to pick up his first Oscar later this month. The 37-year-old actor’s win was one of two of Bohemian Rhapsody’s seven nominations – with the other going to Sound. In his acceptance speech, Malek thanked Freddie Mercury, who he played in the film, calling him “the greatest outsider of them all.”

Malek said: “This is truly extraordinary. Really. Thank you to BAFTA for this gorgeous gift.

“I still cannot believe I’m included with this group of actors I so respect and admire. I share this with you guys. Every moment.

“I thank my lucky stars. It’s quite difficult entering your world in this role as an outsider.

“You Brits, you do it so well. And it’s not lost on me how sacred your musical heritage is. So, thank you, thank you, thank you, for including me.”

He added: “I have to thank Fox and New Regency and our producers – Graham King and Denis O’Sullivan and Dexter Fletcher.

“And this extraordinary cast and crew that I had the blessing…so blessed to work with every day.

“I thank you. I would not be here without each and every one of you.

“Thank you, so very much to Queen. To Brian May, to Roger Taylor, to the entire Queen family. Wouldn’t be here without you.”

He added: “And to the greatest outsider of them all.

“For being so unwavering and unflinching and uncompromising in every which way.

“Thank you Freddie Mercury again.”

BAFTA 2019: BREXIT jibes leave BBC viewers furious ‘Luvvie pillocks!’ https://briefnews.eu/bafta-2019-brexit-jibes-leave-bbc-viewers-furious-luvvie-pillocks/ https://briefnews.eu/bafta-2019-brexit-jibes-leave-bbc-viewers-furious-luvvie-pillocks/#respond Sun, 10 Feb 2019 23:32:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bafta-2019-brexit-jibes-leave-bbc-viewers-furious-luvvie-pillocks/

Andy Serkis, 54, was the first to make a dig at Brexit in front of the royal family at the BAFTAs.

He said: “A film’s music. A film without music is like Laurel without Hardy.

“It’s Queen without Freddie Mercury. It’s Britain without Europe.”

The joke, like many others tonight, seemed to fall flat, so Eddie Marsan tried his hand for another jibe.

He said: “You have to be able to create something that has painstaking historical accuracy… which is particularly difficult in the country that has reinvented its past to justify Brexit.”

Viewers were furious that the awards to celebrate films, the cast and crew was “hijacked” by Brexit rants.

One BAFTA fan tweeted: “Shame @andyserkis and @eddiemarsan had to politicise #BAFTA with their smug #Brexit digs.”

“Oh man. Didn’t think I’d see jokes worse than Joanna Lumley’s tonight…until Eddie Marsan made his lame crack about Brexit #BAFTA,” posted another.

A third added: “Even the Brexit jokes are falling flat. Shall we just call it a night? #BAFTAs2019 #Bafta.”

“Can’t these over appreciated luvvies just leave the politics at home? Seriously. #EEBAFTAs #BAFTA #Brexit,” wrote anther.

A fifth said: “The #Bafta people are really droning on about #brexit aren’t they. F**king hell. Let it go.”

“Wouldn’t it be nice if a film awards ceremony avoided being political. An hour and 10 mins into #BAFTA and 2 negative mentions of Brexit. Someone tell the luvvies we voted out and we are leaving,” said another.

However, some appreciated the comments made on the delayed awards ceremony.

One viewer tweeted: “@eddiemarsan Britain ‘a country constantly reinventing its past to justify Brexit’ Well put sir. #BAFTA.”

“Just love @eddiemarsan speaking up re the nonsense that is #Brexit at #BAFTA awards. He cares more about UK than almost anyone in the joke that passes for a Parliament down the road in Westminster,” claimed another.

Nominees for the sought-after BAFTA gongs included Olivia Colman, Glenn Close, Viggo Mortensen, Viola Davis, Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, Steve Coogan, Melissa McCarthy, Sam Rockwell, Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, many of whom had to sit through the remarks.

Nominated films included The Favourite, Green Book, Roma, BlacKkKlansman and A Star Is Born.

It comes as many rushed to social media to criticise Joanna’s jokes.

Piers Morgan tweeted: “Jeez, who wrote these jokes for Joanna Lumley? This is a train wreck. #BAFTAs2019.

“This is the future of awards shows, isn’t it? They’ve been ‘woked’ into humourless, PC-enslaved, unctuously sycophantic, excruciatingly boring submission. #BAFTAs2019.”

Netflix wins a BAFTA, but the BBC’s still king https://briefnews.eu/netflix-wins-a-bafta-but-the-bbcs-still-king/ https://briefnews.eu/netflix-wins-a-bafta-but-the-bbcs-still-king/#respond Mon, 14 May 2018 10:14:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/netflix-wins-a-bafta-but-the-bbcs-still-king/

Britain’s Academy of Film and Television Arts held its annual celebration of the small screen, and Netflix was expected to win big. The streaming service was in line for six awards, with The Crown and Black Mirror both being nominated for three each. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be, and only one of the sextet won a gong on the night: The Crown’s Vanessa Kirby, who won best supporting actress.

In fact, for all of the negative talk that the BBC is at risk of being killed by Netflix, the corporation had a successful night. Its historical drama, Peaky Blinders, took home the awards for Best Drama, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Comedy, Best Current Affairs and Best Mini Series. Another streaming service, Hulu, should feel pretty smug today: it won Best International Series for The Handmaid’s Tale.

BAFTA TV Awards 2018: Best dressed stars wear stunning vibrant gowns on the red carpet https://briefnews.eu/bafta-tv-awards-2018-best-dressed-stars-wear-stunning-vibrant-gowns-on-the-red-carpet/ https://briefnews.eu/bafta-tv-awards-2018-best-dressed-stars-wear-stunning-vibrant-gowns-on-the-red-carpet/#respond Sun, 13 May 2018 18:05:44 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bafta-tv-awards-2018-best-dressed-stars-wear-stunning-vibrant-gowns-on-the-red-carpet/

The BAFTA TV awards are on in London tonight, and one of the highlights of the evening are the dresses worn on the red carpet by the celebrities.

Some of the most loved TV faces did not disappoint, with a host of gorgeous gowns on display.

Laura Whitmore, 33, looked sensational in a yellow dress which she paired with a Hollywood red lip look.

Yellow was a popular colour, with Nadine Mulkerrin, 24, also choosing the shade for her simple yet striking gown.

Michelle Keegan, 30, showed the influence of husband Mark Wright’s LA career, choosing a classic Hollywood A line gown in lemon yellow.

White was another colour chosen to great effect by several of the attendees. Claire Foy, 34, looked regal in a white strapless dress with a giant cream tie at the front.

She paired this with an elgeant white and gold square clutch and a simple swept back updo.

Amanda Holden, 47, stole the show in a hot pink dress, posing up a storm alongside her young daughter Alexa on the red carpet.

Thandie Newton, 45, is nominated for Best Actress tonight, and she looked every inch the Hollywood star in a printed strapless dress.

Anna Friel, 41, has also been a star of both TV and film for many years, and she showed off her alabaster skin and brown hair with a deep moss green strapless gown.

Call The Midwife favourite Helen George, 33, looked elegant in a blush pink ruffled column dress.

She paired the strapless gown with a large egg-shaped bag glittering with gems, and wore her platinum blonde hair swept up in a chic updo.

Pale colours also worked for The Crown actress Vanessa Kirby, 30, who sparkled in a nude dress with a silver overlay.

She kept the rest of her look simple, wearing delicate diamon drop earrings and a diamond ring.

Her hair was slicked back and tonged into loose, tumbling waves, and she completed the looks with a deep berry lipstick.

Not all of those walking the red carpet looked their best, and sadly many of the celebrities missed the mark.

Claudia Winkleman always tries out brave looks on the red carpet, but sadly tonight’s effort did not flatter the veteran presenter.

Caroline Flack, 38, looked like a cake-topper in her sugary pink dress. The one-shoulder design featured a black leaf pattern and one of Caroline’s shoulders was covered in a pink tulle sleeve.

And former Pussycat Doll Ashley Roberts drowned her frame in a sheer red dress, which she paired with ill-fitting shoes.

The BAFTA TV awards 2018 worst dressed red carpet looks can be seen here.

Ant McPartlin news: Saturday Night Takeaway nominated for BAFTA after Dec presents solo https://briefnews.eu/ant-mcpartlin-news-saturday-night-takeaway-nominated-for-bafta-after-dec-presents-solo/ https://briefnews.eu/ant-mcpartlin-news-saturday-night-takeaway-nominated-for-bafta-after-dec-presents-solo/#respond Wed, 04 Apr 2018 09:47:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ant-mcpartlin-news-saturday-night-takeaway-nominated-for-bafta-after-dec-presents-solo/

Saturday Night Takeaway has been shortlisted for Best Entertainment Programme at the awards ceremony, which will take place later this year.

The nod comes just days after Dec hosted the without Ant, who stepped down from all TV commitments following his drink-drive charge last month.

The series will go up against , which is also hosted by the Geordie duo.

Michael McIntyre’s Big Show and The Voice UK also received a nomination in the entertainment category.

Dec is set to present Saturday Night Takeaway alone once more for the series finale in Florida this weekend.

It comes after it was reported that .

A TV insider commented: “After last weekend the feeling is very much that Dec should take on BGT alone too – he did a brilliant job.

“The bosses at ITV loved him and want him back on screens as soon as possible, and Simon Cowell totally agrees that he’s the best man for the job rather than bringing in a new face.”

The source added to The Sun: “It was obviously strange for viewers seeing him alone at first, but he took everything in his stride like a pro.

“That’s not to say people didn’t miss Ant, but the overwhelming response was that Dec was fantastic solo too.

“It also solves the major headache over continuity issues because so much of the series is already in the bag after the auditions finished.”

Following the nominations, bookmakers Ladbrokes believe the duo are odds-on for a BAFTA win.

Alex Apati said: “It’s been a tough year for TV’s favourite duo but the odds suggest nothing will stop them from claiming yet another BAFTA.”

Meanwhile, the BAFTA TV nominations also saw The Crown receive three nods.

Actress Claire Foy, who took on the role of Queen Elizabeth, was nominated in the Leading Actress category, while Vanessa Kirby who starred as Princess Margaret received a nod in the Supporting Actress category.

The show has also been nominated for best Drama Series.

BBC series Line of Duty also received three nominations for Drama Series, Leading Actress and Supporting Actor.

Following the nominations, BAFTA chair Jane Lush said she believed the British TV industry is in “pretty good health”.

When asked if the TV awards would follow the lead of the film awards, which saw stars wear black on the red carpet in support of the Time’s Up movement, Jane commented: “I don’t know yet.

“Nobody was forced to wear black at the film awards but we were all delighted to stand up and be associated with the Time’s Up movement.

“The problems that the film industry had to face are universal.

“They’re not just in the creative industries. It’s something that BAFTA takes very seriously. Everybody should be able to go to work feeling comfortable.

BAFTA 2018: Ridley Scott SWEARS at audience during live acceptance speech 'Are you bored?' https://briefnews.eu/bafta-2018-ridley-scott-swears-at-audience-during-live-acceptance-speech-are-you-bored/ https://briefnews.eu/bafta-2018-ridley-scott-swears-at-audience-during-live-acceptance-speech-are-you-bored/#respond Mon, 19 Feb 2018 07:24:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bafta-2018-ridley-scott-swears-at-audience-during-live-acceptance-speech-are-you-bored/

The English film director and producer was honoured with a fellowship for his outstanding contribution to film and television at the 71st BAFTA  Awards.

However, his acceptance speech didn’t go quite to plan when he appeared to swear at a distracted audience member.

The 80-year-old began his speech by saying: “It’s been 40-years in this business and this is the first time they’ve ever given me anything so I’m not going to go quietly.

He then went on to thank Prince William, who presented him with the trophy, and BAFTA.

During his emotional speech, he spoke about his time at school and how he was at the bottom of his class.

But as he spoke about his schooling experience an audience member seemed to draw his attention.

Turning to the individual, he barked: “Are you bored? S**t, are you alright?”

Despite his comments making the crowd giggle, he seemed aware of the mishap and turned to Prince William apologetically.

He later apologised to Prince William directly for using the word “a***” to describe one of his on-set experiences during the speech.

The film producer also used his time on stage to praise teachers for their tremendous work, adding: “It’s extraordinary what a teacher can do.

“Drawing the student out, igniting independence and encouraging them to design their own future, rather than waiting for something to happen.

“Teaching is the most important of all professions. Sort that out and social problems will get sorted out.”

Sir Ridley, who has worked in the film-making industry for 40-years, was elated to have received the prestigious award.

He follows in the footsteps of previous recipients including Steven Spielberg, Charlie Chaplin, Alfred Hitchcock, Sean Connery and Elizabeth Taylor.

In 1995, Sir Ridley and his brother Tony received a BAFTA for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema and in 2003 he was knighted for his services to the British film industry.

The BAFTAS 2018 is available to watch on the BBC iPlayer now.

BAFTA 2018: Call The Midwife executive producer Pippa Harris speaks out for Time's Up https://briefnews.eu/bafta-2018-call-the-midwife-executive-producer-pippa-harris-speaks-out-for-times-up/ https://briefnews.eu/bafta-2018-call-the-midwife-executive-producer-pippa-harris-speaks-out-for-times-up/#respond Mon, 19 Feb 2018 05:24:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bafta-2018-call-the-midwife-executive-producer-pippa-harris-speaks-out-for-times-up/

The executive producer for the hit BBC series stopped by on the BAFTA 2018 red carpet to praise women in the film and televison industry.

The 50-year-old also revealed how Call The Midwife and BAFTA are working together to bring more opportunities for women to lead shows behind-the-scenes.

Speaking exclusively to press including Express.co.uk, Pippa explained: “On Call The Midwife we always have shone the spotlight for women in the UK.

“It’s great that I make Call The Midwife and the episode going out tonight has been directed by Rebecca Johnson who is on the BAFTA elevate scheme which is a scheme to bring female directors to the fore and to get them their first movie and get them working on high-end television.

“We’ve used three of the BAFTA elevate directors on the current series so I’m really proud of that.”

It comes after BAFTA stars from in front and behind the cameras signed an open letter ahead of tonight’s ceremony.

Pippa said: “I signed it too! It was really important. I think we’ve all been watching what’s going on in America in terms of the Time’s Up movement.

“And the way that women who have a certain amount of celebrity and money and profile have been able to use that to help women who don’t have any of those things.

“And in the States, certainly they’ve already raised, I think $ 21 million and that money is going towards funding advocacy and support for women who have been sexually harassed or bullied in order to let them bring legal cases.”

She continued: “So I think it’s a really fantastic movement and I’m just thrilled.

“You know, if we can just shine a spotlight on it tonight, that’s great!”

The TV executive also praised the work that British filmmakers are putting into their films to produce worldwide hits.

Pippa said: “I think it’s hugely important. I mean, if you look at the British film category alone, you’ve got some amazing films in there and big popular films like Paddington or Darkest Hour, but also small films like Lady Macbeth that maybe not so many people have heard of but which hopefully now are going to go out and watch.
