Certain species of beetle have evolved unusual “back pockets” to safely house symbiotic bacteria during metamorphosis—the only known instance of this among insects. It’s part of a mutually beneficial arrangement, since the bacteria protect vulnerable larvae and pupae from fungi. Scientists have also determined that only adult females retain these symbiotic bacteria, shuffling the populations out of those back pockets via friction to the genital area as they emerge from their pupae, according to a new paper published in the journal Frontiers in Physiology.
“We show how an insect can maintain beneficial microbial partners despite the drastic rearrangements of body structures that occur during metamorphosis,” said co-author Laura V. Flórez of the University of Copenhagen. “By modifying unique ‘pockets’ on their backs, Lagria beetles manage to keep their protective symbionts and facilitate their relocation during pupation to newly developed adult organs.”
There are many examples of microbial symbionts in nature. For instance, the Hawaiian bobtail squid has a built-in flashlight to help the creature navigate those murky nighttime waters, hunt for prey, and hide from predators in turn. It’s a special organ on the underside, a convenient little cavity that houses colonies of bacteria, Vibrio fischeri. Once that bacterial colony reaches a critical threshold, they all begin to glow, serving as a light source for the squid. Aphids, tubeworms, digger wasps, cereal weevils, and bean bugs have also evolved symbiotic relationships with microbes for various purposes.

Before the 17th episode of Bull Season 4 got underway on Monday night, series lead Michael Weatherly stepped on screen to deliver a viewer advisory.
“Tonight’s episode deals with a citywide panic, not unlike the fears and concerns people are experiencing all over the world at this moment,” Weatherly said, alluding to the coronavirus outbreak. “Before we start, we wanted to remind you this is a work of fiction. It was written and filmed months ago. And its only purpose is to entertain you.”
In the episode that followed, which was titled “The Invisible Woman,” Weatherly’s Dr. Jason Bull took on the trial defense of Dr. Natalie Reznick (played by guest star Brooke Bloom), an anthrax expert who was accused of orchestrating a series of anthrax attacks that terrorized New York City. Though the facts were against his client, Bull set out to prove that the city was in such a rush to get the bacteria off the streets and calm the public’s hysteria, they arrested the wrong person.
Along the way, we saw one of Bull’s colleagues toss aside an N95 mask when the anthrax threat appeared neutralized; there was also a scientist who made mention that the U.S. government had slashed funding for adequate anthrax research.
If you watched the episode, did it hit at all close to home for you?

Bacteria have plenty of ways to combat the viruses that plague them, called phages. The CRISPR-Cas system and restriction enzymes that cleave phage DNA are the best understood, but there are others. They use a variety of different mechanisms and stop phages at various stages of infection, but they all rely on biological actors: proteins and RNA. New work has just revealed, though, that bacteria can use chemical weapons as well.
Bacteria produce a wide range of active small molecules that are not essential for survival but do confer a growth advantage. Some of these small molecules, which kill their fellow microbes, are already used (by us) as antibiotics. It was also observed, more than fifty years ago, that bacteria make molecules that can inhibit the growth of phages. But it wasn’t clear whether these molecules are made specifically because they slow down the phages. Only now, with the background knowledge that (a) bacteria make a lot of bioactive compounds, many of which do combat other microorganisms, and that (b) phages are a major scourge for bacteria, did researchers think to check.
Biochemists screened 4,960 compounds for their ability to protect E. coli from phage infection and found 11 that could. Nine out of the 11 were what are termed DNA-intercalating agents. The nucleotides that comprise DNA (A,T, C, and G) are flat molecules, and they’re stacked parallel to each other along the DNA helix. DNA-intercalating agents slide in between them, interfering with the copying of DNA during cell division.
]]>On a list of horror scenarios for an astronaut, seeing your helmet fill up with liquid as you dangle helplessly attached to a space station traveling at 26,600 km/h per hour must rank near the top.
This is exactly what happened to ESA first-timer Luca Parmitano during a spacewalk on July 16, 2013 when coolant leaked into his air supply.
Here he is describing the experience he compared to being “a goldfish inside a fishbowl” – as he realizes floating water particles are gluing themselves to his eyeballs and going up his nostrils.
“I feel it covering the sponge on my earphones and I wonder whether I’ll lose audio contact. The water has also almost completely covered the front of my visor, sticking to it and obscuring my vision,” said the Italian in a space transmission. “The water covers my nose — a really awful sensation that I make worse by my vain attempts to move the water by shaking my head.”
“By now, the upper part of the helmet is full of water and I can’t even be sure that the next time I breathe I will fill my lungs with air and not liquid.”
Almost blinded and deafened, Parmitano climbed back into the airlock by feel, into the arms of the rest of the terrified crew.
Either strong of nerve, or maybe because he was an aquanaut before he was an astronaut, Parmitano will return to the ISS in July next year, and will subsequently command Expedition 61.
“These bacteria were not on the module when it left Earth,” revealed Russian cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov in November 2017, after samples collected from the hull of the ISS were analyzed back on Earth.
“That is, they have come from outer space and settled along the external surface. They are being studied so far and it seems that they pose no danger,” continued the cosmonaut to a million bemused “Uh huhs.”
Not everyone was convinced. Skeptics claim that the microorganisms may have been the result of contamination, forced up into orbit – over 200 miles above the surface – by atmospheric phenomena.

But Shkalperov’s suggestions are not nonsense to whet the appetite of UFO hunters – recent research suggests that space dust carrying microorganisms may have started life on Earth itself billions of years ago.
Likely the most significant research conducted at the station over the past two decades is concerned with how the human body copes with prolonged exposure to space and weightlessness – a necessary prerequisite for any future mission to Mars and beyond.

But perhaps the most puzzling scientific finding at the ISS has been the flatworm that spent five weeks in space last year. Upon its return to Tufts University in Massachusetts researchers discovered that the worm had developed an incredibly rare two-headed mutation. Its genetically identical other half (flatworms are able to grow after being sliced apart), which had spent the time back in the lab, remained completely normal.
Now, scientists are pondering what exactly is forcing these mutations in space. And the answer may be relevant not only to our invertebrate brethren, but also the very space colonists who plan to venture beyond the solar system.
Sometimes the cover-up is worse than the original misdemeanor, even as the actual 2 mm diameter hole discovered on the Soyuz module at the ISS in August was patched over in just minutes.
But the fact that it was there in the first place multiplied by terrestrial tensions between Moscow and Washington created a genuine incident.
Why was the hole initially reported as a meteor strike? When was it drilled? And by whom? Was this honest oversight, or perhaps a refusal to admit sloppy work with a drill, or an act of disgruntled revenge? Is there more damage yet to be discovered? From Baikonur engineers to American astronauts, everyone is a suspect, and nearly three months later, a high-powered investigation is still ongoing.
We know that they are doing this out of a public service duty to popularize space exploration, but ISS crew members appear to have an inordinate amount of time to indulge their artistic hobbies. From creating video blogs, to playing the bagpipes, to taking some of the best photos (not) on Earth.
But still nothing has topped the viral impact and artistic perfection of melancholy-mustachioed NASA Commander Chris Hadfield performing David Bowie’s Space Oddity in 2013 while longingly looking out of an actual spaceship.
Now, some might say it is an obvious choice, but just look at his tear-filled eyes. He really knows what it’s like in space, so cold and beautiful and unknowable. And over the last 20 years, we feel like we almost do too.

MRSA bacteria infection can lead to painful skin boils and food poisoning. But, the deadly superbug has been spotted on this common household item, along with a number of other types of bacteria, including listeria. It’s a “breeding ground” for killer superbugs, warn scientists.![]()
E. coli is a type of bacteria that can cause harmful symptoms if there is an infection.
It commonly causes UTI infections in women, however, it can also cause good poisoning.
According to the NHS symptoms include “severe stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhoea that may be bloody.”
Now some products have recalled after fears emerged that they may be contaminated with E. coli.
Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut is recalling products produced between 6 and 21 September.
The factory was forced to close after E. coli was detected in water at the facility.
This comes after more foods were implicated in a listeria outbreak.
Scotch eggs and smoked salmon have been removed from the shelves.
Now all the retailers who carry the macadamia nut products have been ordered to stop selling them.
Sanitation expert Peter Oshiro said: “There is clear evidence that food produced at the Keaau facility may be contaminated and consumers may be at risk.
“The Department of Health is working with the facility to ensure the safety of their drinking water and food production.”
Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut, a Hawaiian company, is the world’s largest processor of macadamia seeds.
It was at subsidiary of The Hershey Company from 2004 to 2015.
Intestinal infections caused by E. coli are usually treated by rehydrating to combat diarrhoea.
Usually antibiotics are not necessary to combat the illness, which usually goes away on its own.
To combat Listeria symptoms Dr Chris advised cooking frozen vegetables throughly before eating them.
“Listeria comes from frozen vegetables – frozen sweetcorn in particular,” said Dr Chris.
“It’s a form of food poisoning. It’s a serious one but few people have heard of it.
“Symptoms include high temperature, aches pains, vomiting, and diarrhoea.
“Pregnant women and babies must be careful,” he added.
Doctors were forced to amputate a 71-year-old man’s left arm after he presented at a South Korean hospital with a two-day fever and agonizing pain in his left hand, both of which developed shortly after he ate raw seafood.
Medics at the Chonbuk National University Medical School in Jeonju, South Korea were alarmed by a huge, purple blister, which measured 3.5cm by 4.5cm (1.4 by 1.8 inches), that had developed on the man’s hand and forearm.
Despite emergency surgery and treatment with antibiotics to remove the blisters and contain the infection, deep necrotic ulcers formed and surgeons were forced to amputate the man’s arm 25 days after he initially arrived in hospital, according to a case report in The New England Journal of Medicine.
The man had a medical history involving, among other ailments, type-2 diabetes, hypertension and final-stage renal disease.

Vibrio vulnificus is a flesh-eating bacteria from the same family that causes cholera, which can enter the human body through open sores that are exposed to infected seawater or by eating contaminated, uncooked seafood.
Separately, another 71-year-old man from Florida died from an infection caused by the bacteria in June after eating raw oysters. The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 80,000 people are infected withthe bacteria each year, of whom roughly 100 die.

While NASA’s rovers have looked for signs of life outside of our world, they haven’t searched for life directly. But Melissa Floyd, a scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, is working on a device that might change that. She wants to build an instrument that could look through soil and rock samples for evidence of bacteria or another type of single-celled microorganism called archaea. These organisms are thought to have been the first to appear on Earth and Floyd began to wonder if maybe life on nearby planets evolved like it did on our own. “I had this idea, actually a major assumption on my part: what if life evolved on Mars the same way it did here on Earth? Certainly, Mars was bombarded with the same soup of chemistry as Earth,” Floyd said in a statement.
But looking directly for life on another planet isn’t easy. And the major challenge here is to develop a machine and a protocol that can effectively replicate what scientists do here on Earth. Floyd believes that a technique called fluorescent in situ hybridization is the best option for this project, and she’s working on automating that process.
When a scientist uses this particular technique, they have to put a sample of something on a slide, treat the cells of that sample to make them permeable, add a molecular probe that will attach to certain sequences of DNA or RNA in the cell, heat the sample and then look at it under a microscope. And those are just the main steps — there are a number of others in this process. “I’m trying to determine whether I can do the same thing with a robot,” said Floyd.
If such a robot can be engineered, NASA could then send it on its own or as part of a rover to another planet or moon in our solar system. It may seem like a tall order, but it could give scientists another powerful tool with which to search for extraterrestrial life. Floyd notes that her assumption about how life formed elsewhere in our solar system could be wrong. “But how do we know,” she asked. “We’ve never looked.”

]]>A Russian experiment called ‘Biorisk’ has revealed that various microorganisms from Earth were able to survive in the harsh conditions of space on the surface of the International Space Station (ISS). It was carried out starting in January 2005 at the Russian segment of the ISS and saw 68 different organisms, including bacteria, insects, vertebrate animal and higher plants, used as test subjects.
The mutated bacteria showed high aggressiveness and resistance to antibiotics on their return to Earth, the Russian report, prepared for the meeting of the International Committee on Space Research in the US later in July, said.
Eggs of crustaceans and caviar of African toothcarp fish also managed to survive in outer space for 2.5 years, with the embryos revived after returning to Earth, it added.
“The living organisms are capable of surviving in outer space. Hypothetically, in distant future, the arrival of alien substances from other planets to Earth may be possible as well as to other planets from Earth,” the report said, as cited by RIA-Novosti.
“In addition, the danger is posed by terrestrial microorganisms that returned from space after visiting another planet and transforming in an unknown manner in its atmosphere,” it added.
According to the paper, the Russian scientists are going to use the result of their research to develop measures aimed at protecting Earth form this threat.

The findings of the ‘Biorisk’ experiment “are not only of significant scientific interest, but also invaluable from the practical point of view for the justification of the planetary quarantine strategy during future interplanetary flights,” the report said.
The principle of “planetary defense,” aimed at preventing the contamination of Earth by alien organisms and vice versa, is used by international space agencies during all interplanetary missions. The Committee on Space Research, which is based in the French capital of Paris, has been in charge of planetary defense since 1959.
