Germany's Economy Minister Robert Habeck said the country would delay the phasing out its last two nuclear plants amid its energy crisis.

Germany will keep two nuclear power stations open and on standby in case of an energy crisis — marking a U-turn in its plan to phase out the fuel source by the end of 2022.

The two plants — located in the southwestern state of Baden Württemberg and the southeastern state of Bavaria — were to be shut by the end of this year but will now stay open until mid-April 2023.

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said in a Monday statement that the country has a "very high supply security" for electricity, but noted that "this year is a special year across Europe."

"The Russian attack on Ukraine has created a tense situation in the energy markets and we are doing everything we can to avoid a gas shortage," Habeck added.

Germany is reliant on piped natural gas from Russia, which accounts for 35% of the country's imports of the fuel. However, it now faces a potential energy shortage in winter as Russia has shut down natural-gas flows via a critical pipeline that delivers natural gas to Germany and beyond.

"It remains very unlikely there will be crisis situations and extreme scenarios," Habeck said. "But as Minister responsible for security of supply, I do everything that is necessary to fully guarantee security of supply."

Habeck added that Germany is still committed to phasing out nuclear energy, and the two plants would be activated only when necessary.

The move to keep the nuclear plants open is a big deal as Germany has been phasing out nuclear energy since Japan's Fukushima nuclear disaster in March 2011. It's a highly contentious issue in Germany, where the anti-nuclear movement dates back to the 1970s.

However, amid the country's unprecedented energy crisis, even its Green Party — born of the anti-nuclear movement — has softened its stance on switching off all of Germany's nuclear reactors this year. Habeck belongs to the Green Party.

"We have to prepare for the worst," Habeck told a news briefing, Reuters reported on Monday. "The plants will only reopen when more power is needed."

In response to an Ars report on a court hearing in New York on October 17, New York City and New York City Police Department officials attempted to clarify the nature of the issues surrounding a lawsuit filed by the nonprofit legal defense organization Bronx Defenders. In response to reporting that the Property and Evidence Tracking System (PETS) did not have database backups, NYPD Deputy Commissioner Stephen Davis said via e-mail, “Contrary to some published reports suggesting that NYPD does not electronically back up the data in its Property and Evidence Tracking System (PETS), all such data is backed up continuously in multiple data centers.”

That statement would appear to be in direct conflict with an affidavit filed by city attorneys (PDF) in the case, in which NYPD Director of Strategic Technology Programs Christian Schnedler stated, “Currently, there is no secondary or back-up system, and no repository of the data in PETS outside of PETS itself.”

Schnedler’s affidavit, which is part of the NYPD’s effort to block an external audit of cash-seizure data recorded in PETS, claims that the system is so fragile that even just using a “Web scraping” tool to retrieve cash-seizure data could collapse the whole system. “The risk of introducing and running a generic Web scraping tool into a complex, functioning law enforcement database, which has no backup system, is to risk disrupting NYPD operations, corrupting and/or losing some or all of the data, without a way to retrieve it,” Schnedler testified under oath.

It was by no means a full strength Chiefs side but the Lions will nevertheless be delighted to have shown more fluency in attack than they have all tour.

Nowell scored once in each half while the Lions pack claimed a line-out penalty try and Jared Payne benefitted from a brilliant Liam Williams break to get on the scoresheet in his once-time home town.

Warren Gatland had promised before the match that any outstanding performers could even find themselves in the starting XV in Auckland and it appeared to galvanise the “midweek” team, yet to win a game on tour.

They made a strong start with the ball in hand, going through 20 phases in the Chiefs 22 before drawing a penalty which Dan Biggar slotted to give the Lions the lead.

However, the tourists found themselves down to 14 men when Joe Marler unleashed a shuddering, no-arms tackle on Nepo Laulala and was rightly sin-binned for the misdemeanour.

But the Chiefs were unable to take advantage and Allan Dell, who replaced James Haskell while Marler was off, made an instant impact by winning a penalty at his very first scrum.

When Haskell returned at 6-3 to the Lions, he was reunited with Stander and Justin Tipuric, all three of whom put in a stand-out shift with Test places in the back row reportedly up for grabs.

The teams traded penalties but it was the Lions who drew the first real blood, again going through the phases before Nowell, razor-sharp around the breakdown, spotted a gap and jump over the ruck to score from a metre.

The lead was cut to seven points by a second Chiefs penalty just before the break but Gatland will still have been pleased with the work of his second XV.

The 10 minutes after the restart were peppered with penalties as both sides showed some indiscipline.

But despite Rory Best struggling with his throwing, the Lions line-out began to function brilliantly and it soon bore fruit.

With Alun Wyn Jones replacing Courtney Lawes, victim of yet another head injury, the experienced Welshman called the ball to the front of a five-metre line-out and when the Chiefs pulled it down, the referee had no hesitation in running under the posts to award a penalty try.

With Mitchell Brown sin-binned to add insult to injury, the Chiefs found themselves on the ropes.

The Lions pack had been dominant but it was the backs’ turn to shine this time, Daly breaking down the right and getting a fine off-load away.

Robbie Henshaw was tackled but Haskell cleared out superbly, allowing the Lions quick ball and Nowell produced an excellent finish from 25 meters to get his second try of the match.

And they did it again minutes later, Liam Williams shimmying through the broken field before finding Payne on his shoulder, sending the former local schoolboy over for his first try of the tour.

The game broke up in the closing stages as the Lions’ replacements came on, and it was Scotland winger Tommy Seymour who should have put Payne in the corner but produced a poor pass to spurn the last try-scoring opportunity of the game.

When Microsoft introduced File History with Windows 8, cautious PC users were happy: it gave you a Time Machine-style backup that let you recover older files if you made a mistake. You might not get to take that feature for granted, though. Users trying a leaked Windows 10 Insider Preview build have discovered that creating new File History backups is “no longer supported.” Provided this change sticks, you might lose the feature by the time the Fall Creators Update hits your PC. We’ve reached out to Microsoft to see if it can comment, but the find is already raising a question: if File History is going, what (if anything) is replacing it?

Windows news guru Paul Thurrott suspects that it’s a matter of establishing a consistent, cloud-linked backup system. File History can save previous versions of files in the cloud through OneDrive, but they’re always tied to a specific PC. If you need to get that old report on your new computer, you may be hosed. That’s not exactly comforting if a PC dies and you can’t go back.

OneDrive, meanwhile, already has a version history feature on the web. While we wouldn’t count on this happening, it wouldn’t be a stretch for Microsoft to bake that OneDrive versioning into Windows and ensure that you can restore files regardless of the system you’re on. The catch would simply be the cost — you’d need to spring for one of Microsoft’s Office 365/OneDrive subscriptions (starting at $ 70 per year) to get that reassurance where you already have something like it for free.
