Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) has been ensnared in her first congressional scandal: a clip of her and friends performing silly dance moves in college has been leaked and gone viral!

A conservative “QAnon” Twitter account posted a video of Ocasio-Cortez and her friends reenacting a dance routine from The Breakfast Club. Complete with the LiveLeak tag in the corner, it has all the trappings of a scandal, but is strangely… non-scandalous. Wholesome, even.

Unmoved by the group’s youthful exuberance, the anonymous poster disparages the Democratic Socialist congresswoman as a “clueless nitwit.” Most of Twitter, however, was charmed by “Sandy,” and even pro-Trump voices thought the attacks were counterproductive.

Others pointed out that constantly ripping on Ocasio-Cortez over inconsequential matters was only helping her…

…and might help her all the way to the White House.

In general, the hit job backfired completely.

…assuming it was meant as an attack at all.

The video was recorded in 2010 at Boston University, while Ocasio-Cortez was a student there. She graduated with a degree in economics the following year.

Ant-Man and the Wasp crushed by Mamma Mia 2 at UK box office as delayed release backfires https://briefnews.eu/ant-man-and-the-wasp-crushed-by-mamma-mia-2-at-uk-box-office-as-delayed-release-backfires/ https://briefnews.eu/ant-man-and-the-wasp-crushed-by-mamma-mia-2-at-uk-box-office-as-delayed-release-backfires/#respond Mon, 06 Aug 2018 13:44:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ant-man-and-the-wasp-crushed-by-mamma-mia-2-at-uk-box-office-as-delayed-release-backfires/

The Marvel film is said to have grossed £3.8m in the country in the Friday-Saturday-Sunday window, rallying to £5m once previews of £1.2 million are factored in.

According to Screen Daily, Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again triumphed over the weekend, pulling in £4.1 million – a narrow victory, and one that only stands if one disregards Ant-Man and the Wasp’s pre-weekend preview takings.

Mamma Mia 2 has now made £39.3 million here – a very impressive feat by any metric, but still some distance away from the first film’s hefty £68.6 million.

The fact the film has sustained staying power over its three weeks on release points to positive word-of-mouth for the ABBA hit-packed musical, which is also holding up well in repeat visits.

As for Ant-Man and the Wasp, it’s noted that only The Incredible Hulk (£3.3m) and Captain America (£3m) had lower openings for MCU movies in the UK.

Possible reasons include the fact that hot weather returned to the country over the weekend, and the fact that hype around the film peaked around the time of its UK release – which was four weeks earlier.

The domination of the World Cup was thought to be a huge factor in Marvel’s decision to release the sequel a whole month later in the UK, although that may have ended up backfiring.

Evangeline Lily, who plays the Wasp, had previously voiced her disapproval of the staggered rollout.

“They always do that,” she told Empire. “Then what happens is people just pirate the movie and they see it in the worst way possible, like some shitty version online, instead of going to a theatre.

“They go in the end, but I don’t like that staggering. I’m really going to get to the bottom of this for you. I’m as p****d off about it as you are.”

Elsewhere in the UK, Mission: Impossible – Fallout dropped to third place with £2.5 million in its second week, while Incredibles 2 took £2.4 million in its fourth week to finish at No4.

Over in the US, Mission: Impossible – Fallout holds for a second week despite a 42% drop in takings, taking $ 35 million to bring its total to $ 124.5 million.

Christopher Robin follows in second with a $ 25 million debut, while new comedy The Spy Who Dumped Me takes third with $ 12.4 million.

Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again is in fourth place with $ 9 million, bringing its US total to $ 91.3 million, while The Equalizer 2 drops to fifth with $ 8.8 million for a $ 79.9 million total.

‘Yeah, it’s funny to make us think there are jobs’: French mayor’s joke about IKEA opening backfires https://briefnews.eu/yeah-its-funny-to-make-us-think-there-are-jobs-french-mayors-joke-about-ikea-opening-backfires/ https://briefnews.eu/yeah-its-funny-to-make-us-think-there-are-jobs-french-mayors-joke-about-ikea-opening-backfires/#respond Tue, 03 Apr 2018 01:28:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/yeah-its-funny-to-make-us-think-there-are-jobs-french-mayors-joke-about-ikea-opening-backfires/

The Mayor of the French city of Beauvais, Caroline Cayeux, has apologized for a “communication error” after an ill-judged April Fools’ Day joke announcing the construction of new IKEA superstore.

“This is excellent news for the dynamism and employment prospects of Beauvais,” wrote the center-right mayor of the commune, which is located 50 kilometers north of Paris, next to a mockup of what she said would be a 13,000-square-meter store, in simultaneous posts on Facebook and Twitter. “All fans of the brand will also appreciate not having to take miles to Lille, Rouen or the Paris region to shop at IKEA.”

Cayeux, 69, who has a robust social media presence and about 10,000 fans on Twitter, wrote that Beauvais “beat off competition from other French cities,” for which she “congratulates herself.”

The joke was initially too deadpan for some, with several excited residents offering gratitude and writing “very good news.” But as Cayeux was forced to explain that this was an April Fools’ Day post to the more trusting followers, merriment soon turned to anger.

“What a joke! I leave my hometown in a week, because impossible to find a job here,” wrote Twitter user XavierL. (Cayeux responded with a “sad face” emoticon).

“Yeah, It’s funny to make Beauvaisians believe in a new source of employment,” wrote Julien.

“So the dynamism of the city and employment in Beauvais is a joke?” posted Johan Depestel on Facebook. “It’s like saying ‘We’ll make sure the homeless have a roof over their heads all year round…. but no, it’s a joke’ or ‘We’ll upgrade our security systems so that the streets of Beauvais are safer… but no, it’s a joke…’”

“We will all vote for you in the next election… joke,” ArMelo wrote on Twitter.

As the blowback made the rounds on national media, Cayeux noted that her department produces an April Fools’ Day post every year, but apologized and admitted that the choice of topic was “unwise.” She has decided not to delete the original post and has personally contacted IKEA with an investment proposal, which, in her words, the company responded to by saying that it only opens stores in large cities.

#UnfollowMcCain: Senator’s plea for Twitter followers backfires https://briefnews.eu/unfollowmccain-senators-plea-for-twitter-followers-backfires/ https://briefnews.eu/unfollowmccain-senators-plea-for-twitter-followers-backfires/#respond Tue, 05 Dec 2017 17:32:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/unfollowmccain-senators-plea-for-twitter-followers-backfires/

Senator John McCain (R-Arizona) lost thousands of followers after he tweeted asking for more in order to reach three million. Reactions to the call focused on his vote in favor of the tax reform bill, as well as the launch of the #UnfollowMcCain hashtag.

“We’re only 74 Twitter followers away from 3M – spread the word & help us reach this big milestone,” the senator tweeted Monday afternoon.

Within hours, however, McCain had lost thousands of followers. Many criticized him for voting in favor of the Republican tax plan, which Democrats say benefits the rich and harms the middle class. The plan sets aside the “individual mandate” of the American Care Act, which critics argued, would lead to a $ 25 billion cut to the program in 2018, citing a Congressional Budget Office (CBO) analysis of the bill.

“Over 5,000 people have unfollowed you since you sent this this two hours ago. One reason is you because you – a man undergoing cancer treatment – voted to strip $ 25 BILLION dollars from the part of Medicare which pays for CANCER TREATMENT,” said one prolific tweeter.

McCain revealed in July that he had been diagnosed with brain cancer. He recovered well enough to continue his work in the Senate, despite a poor prognosis.

“Since this tweet, John’s losing followers quicker than Americans are losing healthcare and tax benefits,” a Texas film critic tweeted.

“I couldn’t click the unfollow button fast enough. Unless you are part of the 1%, there is no reason to help this man because he sure wouldn’t help you,” said another user.

“.@SenJohnMcCain’s plea for help to reach 3M Twitter followers backfired big time yesterday when he lost 29K followers. Thanks mostly to Russian bots, he’s since gained 5K followers & is now 24,000 short of his goal. Who wants to play today?”

It was unclear why ‘Russian bots’ would help McCain, one of the loudest anti-Russian voices in Congress. Though now reviled, he was considered a hero by many Democrats after voting against the GOP’s proposal to repeal Obamacare in July.

‘Got cancer? Get treatment, keep working’: BBC journo’s tweet backfires spectacularly https://briefnews.eu/got-cancer-get-treatment-keep-working-bbc-journos-tweet-backfires-spectacularly/ https://briefnews.eu/got-cancer-get-treatment-keep-working-bbc-journos-tweet-backfires-spectacularly/#respond Fri, 27 Oct 2017 12:32:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/got-cancer-get-treatment-keep-working-bbc-journos-tweet-backfires-spectacularly/

Cancer patients can “get treatment and carry on working,” according to the BBC’s former political editor Nick Robinson. He was tweeting in support of civil-service chief Sir Jeremy Heywood, who was diagnosed with cancer in June. However, the Tweet has backfired spectacularly.

Robinson, who himself had a tumor removed from his lung in 2015, heaped praise on 55-year-old Heywood for continuing to work while receiving treatment. The details of his cancer have not been divulged, although a statement said that he would be continuing “normal duties.”

Taking to Twitter to praise Heywood, Robinson said his decision to carrying on working was showing the nation how it “can be done.”

“Got cancer? Get treatment & keep working. Not possible for many but Britain’s top civil servant @HeadUKCivServ has shown how it can be done,” he tweeted.

But the BBC Today presenter’s Tweet did not go down well. White-collar workers said Robinson was insulting people who make a living in manual jobs, who could not continue because of the disease.

“It absolutely depends on how you react to treatment & how much support you get from employer,” woman tweeted.

“1 size doesn’t fit all.”

“That’s because he is in full control of his time, schedule & workload & has a non-physical job. How many cleaners or lorry drivers could?” another wrote.

“Make that ‘vast majority,’” a Twitter user added.

“Therefore what’s his point? Other than reinforcing a class superiority stereotype? Try reading between the lines.”

Robinson defended the Tweet, insisting he was only suggesting that some people can continue working following a cancer diagnosis.

“Baffled by those tweeting to say I was suggesting all could would [sic] through cancer,” he wrote. “The original tweet says ‘not possible for many.’ If you can, of course, which is why I wrote ‘not possible for many.’”

Robinson was treated privately for his illness, which almost cost him his voice. He enlisted the help of language therapist Julia Selby after his vocal cords were damaged during surgery.

Heywood became cabinet secretary in 2012 and has worked at Whitehall for 25 years. The Cabinet Office said it would be making no further comment on “this private matter.”

Hung Parliament: ‘Disastrous’ night for Theresa May as snap election gamble backfires (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/hung-parliament-disastrous-night-for-theresa-may-as-snap-election-gamble-backfires-video/ https://briefnews.eu/hung-parliament-disastrous-night-for-theresa-may-as-snap-election-gamble-backfires-video/#respond Fri, 09 Jun 2017 07:23:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hung-parliament-disastrous-night-for-theresa-may-as-snap-election-gamble-backfires-video/ The 2017 general election will go down among the worst mistake in British political history, as Prime Minister Theresa May’s gamble saw her lose her majority in the face of unexpected Labour gains.

May insisted she would not resign, but is due to speak outside Downing Street at 10h GMT.

Scottish National Party (SNP) leader Nicola Sturgeon called the night as “disastrous” for the Conservative leader. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn demanded the PM steps down

In a first statement on the night’s results, a visibly shaken May insisted that “at this time, more than anything else this country needs a period of stability.”

“If the Conservative Party has won the most seats and probably the most votes then it will be incumbent on us to ensure that we have that period of stability and that is exactly what we will do,” she added after winning her Maidenhead seat.

But her election battle cry “strong and stable” had a ring of irony by the end of the night, as her 253 majority in the House of Commons was whittled away by a Labour surge.

A total of six Tory ministers lost their seats in the fiasco, including the rumored next Tory Brexit negotiator, Ben Gummer, who saw his Ipswitch seat go to Labour with a 10.3 point swing.

Other Tory losers include Financial Secretary to the Treasury Jane Ellison; Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for International Development James Wharton; Minister of State for Housing and Planning Gavin Barwell; Minister for Civil Society Rob Wilson; and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Public Health & Innovation Nicola Blackwood.

Home Secretary Amber Rudd also got a scare in the course of the counting in her constituency of Hastings & Rye, winning by an excruciatingly close margin of just over 300 votes.

But the night also proved disastrous for the SNP, which lost nearly half of its MPs, including former leader Alex Salmond and Westminster leader Angus Robertson.

Most of the party’s losses went to the Tories, which prompted pundits to suggest the Scottish Conservatives “saved” Theresa May.

The result is baffling pundits, because Scotland voted predominantly to Remain in last year’s Brexit referendum, and the Tories ran on a clear ‘hard Brexit’ agenda.

For Tim Farron’s Liberal Democrats the night was a bit of a mixed bag. The centrist party increased its vote share, going from nine MPs to 12, but losing its former leader Nick Clegg along the way. The party did reclaim some seats in Scotland too, snatching them back from the SNP, and won back Sir Vince Cable’s seat in Twickenham.

But the night’s winner was undoubtedly Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour, which in spite of not claiming overall victory, made impressive and unexpected strides at the ballot box.

Under the socialist’s direction the party had its highest number of votes since Tony Blair’s 2001 election victory. The party had won 31 extra seats by the early hours, including several long-held Conservative posts.

The success of Corbyn’s campaign also granted some of his opponents within the party an unexpected electoral victory. John Woodcock MP, who was predicted to lose his Barrow and Furness constituency, held the seat with a narrow 209 vote margin. After running an openly anti-Corbyn campaign, the MP responded to the question of why he had won by saying: “I have no idea.”

But the good results for anti-Corbyn Labour MPs prompted many to call for the rapid approval of deselection processes by the party.

“Deselections are now a priority given the Corbyn surge. Let us remove the dead weight of history,” author Alex Williams wrote on Twitter.

“John Woodcock, the anti-Corbyn, election-throwing MP, is back in thanks to the Corbyn surge. Deselections. Soon, sooner, soonest,” added Richard Seymour, author of ‘Corbyn: The Strange Rebirth of Radical Politics.’

The Greens held their only seat in Brighton Pavilion with party co-leader Caroline Lucas.

A hung parliament could see Jeremy Corbyn appealing to smaller anti-austerity parties to support his bid for Downing Street. For now, the ball is in the Tories’ court.

Tesco chairman’s ‘humorous’ remark calling white men ‘endangered species’ backfires https://briefnews.eu/tesco-chairmans-humorous-remark-calling-white-men-endangered-species-backfires/ https://briefnews.eu/tesco-chairmans-humorous-remark-calling-white-men-endangered-species-backfires/#respond Sun, 12 Mar 2017 03:45:23 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tesco-chairmans-humorous-remark-calling-white-men-endangered-species-backfires/

John Allan, chairman of the UK’s biggest retailer Tesco, has been forced to clarify his remarks after claiming that white men now have to work harder than minorities and women to earn a place in the boardroom.

READ MORE: ‘Rights for whites’: Fascist slogans & swastika found in Exeter University student halls

“If you are female and from an ethnic background – and preferably both – then you are in an extremely propitious period,” Allan told a panel during the Retail Week Live conference this week.

“For a thousand years, men have got most of these jobs, the pendulum has swung very significantly the other way now and will do for the foreseeable future. If you are a white male, tough – you are an endangered species and you are going to have to work twice as hard.”

Labour MP Yvette Cooper said that she had “no words” about Allan’s comments, while the leader of the Women’s Equality Sophie Walker led calls to boycott the supermarket, which operates 3,000 outlets in the UK alone.

Tesco’s board of directors is all white, and contains nine men and three women.

“We call on the Tesco Board of Directors to commit to prioritise diversifying their board and provide a clear path with set targets on how they intend to do so,” said a statement from advocacy group Women’s March on London.

“As consumers we are a powerful force and can exercise our freedom to shop elsewhere to support women and locally owned businesses. We encourage all of our marchers to do so until Tesco steps up.”

Allan told the Guardian that he had been misconstrued, explaining that there was a recruitment drive among the UK’s biggest companies to bring more women into the boardroom, particularly as non-executive directors, who have a say on the company policy, without being involved in hands-on management.

“I was talking to a bunch of aspiring non-executive directors, many of whom were women, and I wanted to give them some encouragement and, therefore, I used that rather colorful turn of speech. And the audience, I think, was quite amused and quite enjoyed it,” said Allan, 68, himself a non-executive board member.

“It was intended to be humorous, a bit hyperbolic. Clearly, white men are not literally an endangered species but I was actually wanting to make the reverse point, which is that it is a great time for women and people of ethnic minorities who want to get on in business.”

Statistics show that about 26 percent of all non-executive directors on the boards of the FTSE 100 companies are women, and only 10 percent of executives. Eight percent represent ethnic minorities.

Each had a subversive sense of humour and a good line in banter.

Much to their amusement they got the job. However, the day arrived when they were having too much fun, making too much money (even for their employers), and entertaining us too much.

The big, bad, appeared armed with political correctness and found a way to ruin it; blew the whole house down and replaced them with a popular radio presenter and a clutch of little-known motoring journalists.

Top GearBBC

New Top Gear lineup: (L to R) Rory Reid, Matt LeBlanc, Chris Harris

Enough of them to enter a competitive hill climb. The popular radio presenter wasn’t as popular as people thought and returned to the wireless, much chastened.

The latest version is innocuous, tedious and completely lacking in atmosphere and humour

Then millions of bewildered fans around the world were left with an American sitcom star and two “new” little-known motoring journalists. Dullness descended.

The moral of the story? Beware the little-known.

Granted, I’ve omitted the fact that a well-known TV presenter punched a producer but it is still a source of regret to fans that a once-great show lies in ruins on an old Surrey airbase where it continues to be filmed.

Top GearBBC

‘Neither Chris Harris, Rory Reid or Matt LeBlanc appear comfortable in front of a camera’

The latest version is innocuous, tedious and completely lacking in atmosphere and humour.

Neither Chris Harris, Rory Reid or Matt LeBlanc appear comfortable in front of a camera and approach reading an autocue like it was a cryptic crossword.

They won’t get any better, folks.

You can either do it, or not. In fact, for the whole show you were dreading a return to the studio segments with actor James McAvoy. Two million viewers went elsewhere.

It also appeared that the live element of the show had been deliberately cut back owing to the show’s personality bypass, with an hour’s television rammed with video segments.

An exhaustingly long film, expensively shot in Kazakhstan (why?) about high-milers was like sitting in one of those ailing motors yourself for 500,000 miles.

We also had to suffer their forced jollity and chumminess. And why hasn’t Matt LeBlanc faced criticism, as Clarkson would have done, for saying someone “had some kind of mental issue”?

What a shame Danny Cohen has moved on from his job as director of BBC television.

His special talents are needed again. On a single positive note, it wasn’t as awful as last year’s version. It is now a very ordinary car show. One for the poster, BBC.

To relax, you could do worse than Rivers With Jeremy Paxman

To relax, you could do worse than Rivers With Jeremy Paxman (C4, Sunday). For Channel 4, Sunday nights at 8pm are held open for large tributaries, canals and waterways, even a stream would do.

Any celebrity, such as Prunella Scales and Timothy West, can occupy this slot as long as there’s a river flowing through it. You also need to wear, as Paxman did, an outfit of purple trousers and chambray shirt, more suited to the wine bar. You don’t even have to sail, or barge your way along it as Scales and West do.

Paxman simply barged into people, ignoring the usual pleasantries.

The former Newsnight presenter, who travelled the length of the Severn in this episode, is trying to relate to normal people again after years of speaking only with selfserving politicians, and shouting at them for entertainment – “ANSWER THE QUESTION!!” Thankfully there was some delightful scenery, worthy of Countryfile, as he led us to where he grew up near Worcester and where “Jeeves and Wooster run away to”, which he also described as “99 octane England”.

Sounds vaguely unhealthy to me.

Of course, Paxman always has a rarefied air about him, almost lording it over the countryside. Speaking to one manual labourer, he barked: “But your hands are dirty!” to which the man replied: “Dirty hands, clean money.”

SS-GBBBC

Buckingham Palace is a bombed ruin in the series

SS-GB (BBC1, Sunday) continues to swerve wonderfully between the preposterous, the arcane and the badly enunciated.

The episode started brilliantly with high-level cameos from Von Ribbentrop and Josef Goebbels. The latter, one suspects, was on his way to Fleet Street for a spot of dark propaganda but stopped off to witness – wait for it – the exhumation of Karl Marx at Highgate Cemetery.

Of course. Apparently the occupying Nazis are now loving the Russians. The series has plots everywhere, including an internecine battle between the German Army and the Gestapo, a brace of murders and the discussion of which airfield the King should flee from.

Coward.

And yes, the series is a better read as subtitles than it is a watch. With most Marvel-related films or TV, I can be seen running for the hills, screaming, “young people!”

SS-GBBBC

Sam Riley plays Douglas Archer in SS-GB

There are exceptions: Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool and Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man, both of whom can wonderfully subvert an earnest punch-up when given the chance.

Apparently Downey Jr doesn’t appear in Marvel’s Iron Fist (Netflix, March), which is a shame since they appear to have at least one thing in common. Let’s give it time.

Iron First can thump people very hard (not to be recommended, children) but is nonetheless a likeable character, unusual for the genre.

In the back story, he’s meant to be dead so is trying to convince people that he’s still alive. To prove this paradox, he jumps over cars, an advantage in New York traffic.

He’s also a Buddhist (even though they are pacifists) so I look forward to him carnage-free conquering the world with a single punch.

Brilliantly bonkers.

Rogue One director Edwards – speaking at a BAFTA Cymru charity fundraiser event last week – revealed that he and Johnson engaged in light-hearted sparring when their paths would cross.

Discussing the pressure of making sure Rogue One lived up to expectations, he recalled: “Rian Johnson was working while we were working.

“I would joke with him that his benchmark was The Empire Strikes Back.

“Like, ‘it’s alright Rian, you just have to be better than Empire Strikes Back!’”

To loud laughter from the audience, he added: “And as the first Star Wars standalone, we had to be better than Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure.”

However, the gag soon made for a very uncomfortable moment indeed.

“So as a joke, I went and bought a giant Ewok Adventure poster and it was in my office,” Edwards continued.

“Then one day George Lucas came over out of the blue, and he comes in and I’m s****ing myself, and its only when he comes in that I remember my Ewok Adventure poster.
