The Toronto Maple Leafs’ season has come down to one game, and head coach Mike Babcock wants his players to embrace the situation.

Toronto earned a 3-1 home win over the Boston Bruins on Monday night to tie their best-of-seven NHL opening series 3-3. The Leafs will head into the deciding contest Wednesday night (7:30 p.m. ET, CBC) at TD Garden having registered two straight victories. 

“Our opportunity here is we’ve crawled our way back to be in the series,” Babcock told reporters Tuesday at the Leafs practice facility before departing for Boston. “You want to be players, you want to be coaches, you want to be management that’s known for getting it done and in order to do that you’ve got to get it done.

“It should be a lot of fun, let’s embrace it. We’d like to play in the next round, Boston wants to play in the next round. Something has to give.”

Babcock said forward Leo Komarov is healthy enough to return to Toronto’s lineup. But Babcock expects to wait until Wednesday morning before deciding the veteran’s status.

“He’s now in a position he could go,” Babcock said. “My big question is it’s going fast out there and you haven’t played.”

Komarov suffered a lower-body injury in Game 2 and hasn’t played since.

Toronto has rallied from 2-0 and 3-1 deficits in the series, which defenceman Jake Gardiner feels puts the pressure squarely on the Bruins on Wednesday night.

“When we were down 3-1, I don’t think anyone expected us to come back,” he said. “And now that we’re here, it’s a good opportunity.”

Toronto has won at TD Garden in the series, claiming a 4-3 decision there Saturday in Game 5. But the win didn’t come easily the Leafs led 4-1 in the second, then held on as Boston outshot the visitors 20-5 in the third.

Vindication for Gardiner

Still, the victory was vindication of sorts for Gardiner, who was with Toronto five years ago when it blew a 4-1 third-period lead in dropping a 5-4 decision to Boston in the seventh game of that first-round series.

“In both scenarios we were down 3-1 and came back,” Gardiner said. “Just have fun with it, the pressure is kind of off us.

“We’re going to be going into that building, it’s going to be rocking and we’ll be ready to go.”

In a one-game scenario, Babcock said the approach becomes a simple one.

“As the series goes on and as the playoffs go on, the games dummy down,” he said. “What I mean by that is it’s just simplified.

“Simple plays and spend as much time in the offensive zone as you possibly can are what you want to do. Little things like winning faceoffs and taking care of the puck are so important. What we’re going to ask of each guy is to do their individual part. Know your job and do it.”

Toronto defenceman Morgan Rielly said the team that executes best will enhance its chances of advancing.

“I think that’s what happens typically in these games,” he said. “Both teams know one another pretty well, both teams have a pretty good idea of what the other team brings.

“It’s just a matter of going out there and being motivated and being competitive and executing.”

Babcock agreed, although Toronto should also be a confident bunch coming off the consecutive wins.

“In the National Hockey League any time it’s not going your way you’ve got to dig your way back,” Babcock said. “I think because we had a foundation of confidence and were a good team we were able to do that.

“Saying that, it’s a brand new slate, here you go. The puck’s going to get dropped and who’s going to execute early and get on top of the other team? I think that’s one of the keys in Game 7 for me. I think our guys — I don’t think, I know — are excited.”

BABCOCK RANCH, Florida—About a decade ago, NFL lineman-turned-real estate developer Syd Kitson began to have a vision. Fiber-optic Internet fed into every home. Self-driving cars ferried kids back-and-forth from school. A great blue sea of solar panels stretched to a horizon line of pines, soaked up rays in the Sunshine State.

Kitson wanted to turn the abandoned land he saw around him in Southwest Florida into a sort of future town, a place running entirely on the latest and greatest in energy-efficient technology. So in 2006, Kitson purchased 91,000 acres of mostly undeveloped agricultural land just 15 miles northeast of Fort Myers. He named the development Babcock Ranch, honoring the family who sold it to him.

There’s never been a shortage of real estate developers wanting to capitalize on Florida, of course. Yet Kitson promised his town would be different, better because it would be as sustainable as possible. When media outlets (ABC, CBS) eventually saw it, they dubbed Babcock Ranch America’s “first solar-powered town.”

Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Mike Babcock, three-time Olympic champion Danielle Goyette and former NHL forward Ryan Smyth were named Order of Hockey in Canada honourees on Tuesday.

The Hockey Canada initiative celebrates individuals for their outstanding contributions or service to the growth and development of the sport.

A selection committee of 12 members nominates and selects the honourees via secret ballot who will be recognized June 18-19 at a gala in London, Ont.

“As players and coaches, this group has led the way on and off the ice, teaching and inspiring Canadian players at all levels of the game,” said Hockey Canada chief executive officer Tom Renney. “To be selected as a distinguished honouree of the Order of Hockey in Canada is one of the most prestigious accomplishments one can receive in hockey in Canada, and this year’s honourees are well-deserving of the recognition.

“On behalf of my colleagues at Hockey Canada, the Order of Hockey in Canada selection committee, as well as our board members, I would like to congratulate Danielle, Mike, and Ryan, and we look forward to celebrating them in London on June 18.”

Babcock, from Saskatoon, guided the Detroit Red Wings to a Stanley Cup in 2008. As Team Canada coach, he has won gold at the Winter Olympics, world championship, world junior championship and World Cup of Hockey.

Smyth won Olympic gold, 2 world titles

Goyette, from St-Nazaire, Que., was inducted into the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame in 2013 and the Hockey Hall of Fame last year. The University of Calgary Dinos women’s hockey coach won eight world titles over her 15-year playing career with the national program.

“When you represent your country, I don’t think you can have a better feeling than that,” Goyette said.

Smyth, from Banff, Alta., served as Canada captain on six occasions at the world championship. Well known as “Captain Canada,” he won a pair of world titles, Olympic gold, world junior gold, World Cup gold and a Spengler Cup title over his career.

Smyth had 842 points in 1,270 NHL games over 19 seasons with Edmonton, the New York Islanders, Colorado, and Los Angeles.

Sometimes it would be in the morning, sometimes in the afternoon and sometimes they would talk on the phone.

In their decade together in Detroit the two hockey minds would discuss a wide range of subjects in their daily heart-to-hearts. Maybe their conversation would centre around the opposition or a hot player in the league or an issue.

Always, they would touch on which players were trending up for the home side, which players were struggling and possible reasons for the direction of the individuals they discussed.

“Mike likes to listen to the opinions of the people around him,” Holland said before Babcock’s Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Red Wings 6-3 at the Air Canada Centre on Wednesday evening.

“Mike likes routine. Part of his routine was to talk with me daily, but he has an entire network — within the organization and out — that he talks a lot with. He knows a lot of people. He likes information and he takes what he feels is relevant and he discards what he feels is irrelevant.”

Early in his third season behind the bench of his new team, the 54-year-old Babcock has made the Maple Leafs relevant again. Two weeks into the new season, Toronto is tops in the NHL with a 6-1-0 record for a league-leading 12 points.

The next step

The turnaround in Toronto has come quicker than expected. Landing Auston Matthews, the first overall 2016 selection, certainly hastened the process of turning the rebuilding Leafs into a contender. But Babcock has played a massive role in Toronto’s rise. He has always said that a good coach needs a talented roster to succeed.

Babcock, however, has taken a young, talented roster to the top of the standings in rapid fashion. His presence behind the Leafs’ bench also enticed a star free agent, Patrick Marleau, to sign in Toronto. When Marleau agreed to a three-year deal last summer after 19 seasons with the San Jose Sharks, he admitted Babcock was the main reason why he left the West Coast.

Marleau enjoyed his time and success under Babcock with the gold-medal winning Canadian Olympic teams in 2010 and 2014. He also said Babcock’s passion and ability to push players and challenge them factored into his decision to move his family to Toronto.

Babcock still needs playoff success to validate what he’s done in Toronto. Dating back to his final two seasons in Detroit, Babcock has been unable to push his team to the second round of the playoffs. Nevertheless, the Leafs are looking good early on.

Success at every level

Holland was asked to assess why Babcock, who last weekend became the 16th head coach in league history to win 600 regular-season games, has been such a success. The respected Red Wings GM remarked Babcock’s resumé is a good starting point as he has won a University Cup, a world junior title, a world championship, a Stanley Cup, a World Cup and two Olympic gold medals as a coach.

“He has 20 years of experience and has won at every level — junior, AHL, NHL, world junior, world championship and Olympics,” Holland said. “So he has the experience to rely on.

“He is the boss. He has a plan and he has an ability to communicate that plan to his players. He also is a very passionate man and that passion rubs off on those around him.”

Holland also marvels at his former coach’s work ethic. Babcock not only has his daily verbal information sessions with his network of people, he also talks with his players, breaks down video sessions with his staff and studies the analytics provided for him.

You may think there is a danger of information overload. But Holland reiterates one of Babcock’s strengths is an ability to sift through his conversations, video sessions and analytics information and only take what he feels is pertinent.

“He likes perspective,” Holland said. “He likes a lot of different perspectives. But he’s good at taking what perspective or ideas are best for the team.”
