Shia LaBeouf and David Ayer, who previously worked together on the World War II tank drama Fury, will re-team for a film called The Tax Collector. What’s it about? Who the hell knows! Taxes, probably.

Break out your W-9s and 1040s – The Tax Collector is coming! Perhaps Batman’s most notorious villain, The Tax Collector is getting his own spin-off film! Oh, wait, my mistake. The Tax Collector is not a Batman villain at all. Instead, it’s the name of a new gritty L.A. crime thriller from Bright and Suicide Squad director David Ayer. Deadline reports Ayer will reunite with Fury actor Shia LaBeouf for the thriller, which “harkens back to Ayer’s earlier gritty crime thrillers Training Day (which he wrote and Antoine Fuqua directed) and End of Watch, which Ayer directed.”

And that’s really all we know. There are no plot details here. We know LaBeouf will co-star along with Bobby Soto, and that Ayer is at the helm. So it’s hard to get overly excited about all of this without any specific details. I’m a bit mixed on Ayer – I thought Training Day was fantastic, but most of the other films he’s been associated with – especially Suicide Squad and Sabotage – have been downright terrible. That said, Fury showed some promise, so perhaps the secret to making a David Ayer movie work is to add Shia LaBeouf into the mix.

Personal problems aside, I actually do think LaBeouf is a good actor when given the right material. I know a lot of people loathe him because of his appearance in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but he more often than not turns in a good performance. Heck, I’ll go so far as to say that I thought he was pretty good in Crystal Skull as well, but I know I’m in the minority there.

Word is that The Tax Collector is Ayer’s next project, which means Bright 2, another Ayer film in the works, will have to wait a little longer. Ayer helmed the first Bright – a gritty crime film set in a world full of magic – for Netflix. Critics were not happy with Bright, but Netflix was pleased as punch. So much so that they greenlit a sequel before Bright even dropped onto the streaming service. Bright 2 will bring back Will Smith and Joel Edgerton, and will likely feature more of Ayer’s signature grittiness. For a while, Ayer was attached to a standalone Harley Quinn/Gotham City Sirens movie spun-off from Suicide Squad. However, that’s no longer the case, as DC and Warner Bros. have since hired Cathy Yan to helm the Harley-centric film.

‘Bright’ Director David Ayer on Creating a Fantasy L.A. for Netflix [Interview] https://briefnews.eu/bright-director-david-ayer-on-creating-a-fantasy-l-a-for-netflix-interview/ https://briefnews.eu/bright-director-david-ayer-on-creating-a-fantasy-l-a-for-netflix-interview/#respond Fri, 22 Dec 2017 10:02:01 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bright-director-david-ayer-on-creating-a-fantasy-l-a-for-netflix-interview/ Bright Director interview

It’s hard to argue that Netflix isn’t directly competing with Hollywood studios when the new Will Smith movie premieres on the streaming service. After making original films with megastars Adam Sandler and Brad Pitt, Netflix closes the year out with Bright, a cop drama reuniting Smith with his Suicide Squad director David Ayer.

Well, it’s not quite a standard cop drama. Smith is partnered with an orc (Joel Edgerton) on the case of elves (Noomi Rapace, Lucy Fry and Edgar Ramirez), and looking for a magic wand. Ayer spoke with /Film by phone last week to discuss the film, which premieres tomorrow, December 22, on Netflix and in select theaters.

You’ve done a lot of movies showing L.A. as it is. Was Bright your first chance to really re-imagine L.A.?

Oh, for sure. It’s a lived in world with this sort of exotic history. As you know, it’s a genre mash-up. So my big challenge was how do I add this layer of history and current presence to these species that have intermingled with humans for thousands of years and make it feel real? How have these cultures lived together? What would it look like? It was just really a lot of fun.

In Suicide Squad you had the comic book world to base that movie’s vision on. With Bright were you free to create from scratch?

Yeah. It came from a script Max Landis wrote kind of as an homage to me and my cop movies, then adding these incredible elements. So in a lot of ways, you’re working from reality as a baseline and then the other side of it is how do you take these incredible elements and then ground them and make them feel part of our reality?

Are orcish and elvish full languages like Dothraki that people can speak?

Yeah. David Peterson was our language consultant. He did the languages obviously for Game of Thrones. He created both languages with their grammar and pronunciation. He would kind of, on set, sit there and monitor the actors and dive in and correct them when they got the accents wrong.

Did Max Landis write all of the cop trash talk, or were you able to add that?

He wrote some really great stuff. Like anything, a script is a living document. It evolves as you make the movie. Will added some great stuff, Joel added some great stuff. In a lot of ways it was a potluck.

Can you still correct the police procedure for Joel and Will even when you’re talking about orcs and elves?

Absolutely. Being a cop is being a cop. Doesn’t matter who you are. They did a lot of training, firearms training, ride-alongs. I just really wanted them to feel comfortable with what they were doing as police. I didn’t want them to look like actors that someone just handed a gun to.

Since getting to be R-rated in a fantasy is so rare, was Bright a portrayal of this sort of world we don’t often get to see?

Oh, for sure. Normally if you do a movie like this, you have to make it as broad as possible which in this day and age means PG-13, which sort of means toning it down. But real people say edgy things. Real people cuss. Real people do some raw stuff every now and then. So I think by being able to have a little bit of a harder edge, it enables the world to feel even more realistic and more grounded.

In a world where magic exists, is the law even more vulnerable to corruption?

Well, I think in this case, magic exists but it’s sort of ruthlessly hunted and taken off the street as aggressively as possible by the government. The message is a little bit that whole saying: power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. So I think nearly anyone would be tempted to bend the rules a little bit if they had a real shot at unlimited power.

Could you have done a movie on this scale without having done Suicide Squad?

Yeah, I mean, filmmaking scales up and down. I brought a lot of the lessons of Suicide Squad to this. The same makeup team, special effects team, worked with a lot of the same crew. So I’m always growing as a filmmaker. Suicide Squad was a great training ground for me.

What were some of the most challenging sequences in Bright?

Action for sure. There’s a huge battle between the elves and our heroes in a gas station. That was a pretty intense shoot. We actually built that gas station in downtown L.A. We kept having people pull up trying to buy gas and it’s like no, it’s a movie set, sorry. We had everything going on in there from fire to rain, special effects, squibs going off and everything you see is real. We put a car inside the space. We have a car spinning around in there with the actors. That was very intense and very technical to figure out.

Was it a battle to use real squibs when a lot of movies are doing bullet hits in post now?

I’ve done it every movie. I’ve been doing it since my first film so I’m very comfortable with them and understand how to use them safely. You can’t fake it. That’s what’s great about using the real thing is the actors behavior is very honest when stuff’s blowing up for real.

When these big action scenes happen, it’s not what most cops face day to day. Even though you’re very accurate with the cop stuff, do you let the movie fantasy take over for the action?

Well, the idea is how does an elf fight? How does an orc fight? So Rob Alonzo, my stunt coordinator who’s just a brilliant guy, we had a lot of conversations about what these fights would look like, what the choreography would look like and how would they be different from just a straight up bar fight.

Box office has been down this year and Bright is going into theaters as well as Netflix. If the theatrical showings don’t pack them in, will that ultimately prove that Netflix is the dominant viewing model?

Well, it’s just showing up in a handful of theaters, so I don’t think that attendance will really tell us anything.

Does Gotham City Sirens come from any material you couldn’t fit into Suicide Squad?

That’s all in progress. Let’s talk about Bright.

Is the world of Bright created in the hopes that there can be a Bright 2 and more adventures in this world?

We’re going to leave it up to the fans to ask Netflix for us but it’s a huge universe and it’s a lot of fun. People seem to be really connecting with it. I think anything’s possible.

Despite Rumors, David Ayer Says He’s Still Involved with ‘Gotham City Sirens’ https://briefnews.eu/despite-rumors-david-ayer-says-hes-still-involved-with-gotham-city-sirens/ https://briefnews.eu/despite-rumors-david-ayer-says-hes-still-involved-with-gotham-city-sirens/#respond Fri, 28 Jul 2017 04:47:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/despite-rumors-david-ayer-says-hes-still-involved-with-gotham-city-sirens/ david ayer still involved with gotham city sirens

Spurred on by the success of Wonder Woman, the DC Extended Universe is in the midst of a full-blown creative pivot. But David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, like Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, is a remnant of the earlier era, in which dark and gritty reigned supreme.

Now Ayer, who has been attached to direct the upcoming Harley Quinn-centric film Gotham City Sirens, is facing rumors that he might fall the way of DC’s grimdark tone. But the director has recently stepped forward to say that those rumors aren’t true.

The rumor sprung up that David Ayer was no longer directing Gotham City Sirens after the film wasn’t featured in Warner Bros.’ Comic-Con line-up of nine upcoming DC movies. Mashable reported that Ayer has signaled that he intends to move on from the DCEU, especially after Suicide Squad was heavily reshot and edited after he finished production. It didn’t help that Ayer got in a few veiled jabs at Warner Bros. during his Comic-Con panel for the Netflix series Bright.

“[Bright] isn’t like, some bullshit standard issue studio PG-13 movie,” Ayer said. “I was able to do some real shit here.”

But Ayer, along with his representatives, confirm that he is still attached to Gotham City Sirens. Ayer’s representatives revealed that the project is still in development with a script still being written.

Ayer personally took to Twitter to post a cryptic, but clear, reaffirmation of his involvement with Gotham City Sirens.

Gotham City Sirens is a spin-off of Suicide Squad centered around Harley Quinn, and her misfit band of female criminals including Poison Ivy and Catwoman. Ayer was announced to direct with Margot Robbie set to reprise her role as Harley Quinn back in December, but news around the project has quiet since then.

Ayer, along with Snyder, seemed to be on their way out of the “DC insiders club” Mashable said. Ayer’s Suicide Squad was in line with Synder’s dark, stylish, and hypermasculine tone that kicked off the DCEU, but with the bright and earnest Wonder Woman recently becoming the highest-grossing DC Film, Warner Bros. is looking in a different direction. DC Films co-head Geoff Johns seems to be pursuing the more optimistic vision that Patty Jenkins showcased in Wonder Woman, and new DC hire Joss Whedon has been brought on to put forward that vision. Whedon is currently in the process of extensive reshoots that are reforming Justice League completely after Snyder left due to a family tragedy.

While Ayer may have been more suited for the original vision of the DCEU, he’s indicating that he doesn’t intend to leave Gotham City Sirens anytime soon. Perhaps he can wrangle one of DC Film’s 2020 dates that Warner Bros. has yet to fill.

‘Scarface’ Remake Loses Director David Ayer https://briefnews.eu/scarface-remake-loses-director-david-ayer/ https://briefnews.eu/scarface-remake-loses-director-david-ayer/#respond Thu, 13 Jul 2017 06:41:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/scarface-remake-loses-director-david-ayer/ David Ayer Reflect on Suicide Squad

Universal’s Scarface remake has lost another director. Following in the footsteps of Antoine Fuqua (The Equalizer), David Ayer (Fury) has dropped out of the film, which will star Diego Luna (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story). Creative differences led to the End of Watch and Suicide Squad director’s departure.

Below, learn more about the latest trouble surrounding Scarface remake.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ayer’s script revisions were “too dark” for Universal. Ayer likes his films to get down, dirty and gritty, so his take on Scarface being extreme enough to make Universal uncomfortable isn’t much of a surprise. He doesn’t tend to hold back, especially when it comes to violence – and Scarface calls for a lot of violence

Ayer worked on the script before he even signed up to direct the remake, which based on gangster movies made by Brian De Palma and Howard Hawks. The story moved from Miami to Los Angeles – a city Ayer is well versed in as a filmmaker. The Street Kings director felt like a fine fit for this job, as did Antoine Fuqua, so their exits are unfortunate.

Luna is still set to play a Mexican immigrant in the film who moves to Los Angeles and, like Tony Montana, builds a drug empire and experiences a dramatic rise and fall. Scarface is scheduled to open in theaters 13 months from now, so Universal will have to find a replacement pronto.

Peter Berg once circled the project, but he’s already passed and moved on to direct Mark Wahlberg in Mile 22. Another director who was in the running? The filmmaker behind Starred Up and Hell or High Water, David Mackenzie. He’s now working on another movie with Ben Foster and Chris Pine, but it seems that project is in the early stages, so maybe he’s still available for Scarface.

The project has attracted a lot of great talent overs the years. Only a couple of months ago, the Coen Brothers signed up to revise the script. Before the duo were hired, Boardwalk Empire and Vinyl creator Terence Winter rewrote Jonathan Herman’s (Straight Outta Compton) script. It’s never going to happen, especially since they’re getting ready to shoot their first television series, but I can’t help but smile at the thought of a Coen Brothers-directed Scarface remake. Now there’s a Scarface remake more people would get behind. Even the fact they worked on the screenplay makes Universal’s remake a little more enticing.

Scarface is scheduled to open in theaters August 10, 2018.

‘Suicide Squad’ Helmer David Ayer in Talks to Direct ‘Scarface’ Remake https://briefnews.eu/suicide-squad-helmer-david-ayer-in-talks-to-direct-scarface-remake/ https://briefnews.eu/suicide-squad-helmer-david-ayer-in-talks-to-direct-scarface-remake/#respond Fri, 19 May 2017 17:37:42 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/suicide-squad-helmer-david-ayer-in-talks-to-direct-scarface-remake/ David Ayer directing header

In news that would make James Franco’s white gangster character in Spring Breakers lose his mind, Universal Pictures’ long-brewing Scarface remake may have finally found its director. Suicide Squad director David Ayer is in early talks to take over directing duties from The Equalizer’s Antoine Fuqua, who vacated the project earlier this year due to scheduling conflicts. But is Ayer a good fit for this project?

Why, yes – yes he is. This new version of the gangster thriller has shifted locations from Miami to Los Angeles, and Ayer knows the dirty, gritty streets of modern day L.A. as well as any other current filmmaker. He’s built a career on exploring them in movies like Training Day, The Fast and the Furious, and Dark Blue (all of which he wrote or co-wrote), along with Harsh Times and End of Watch (both of which he wrote and directed). Even Street Kings and the upcoming Will Smith monster movie Bright, which he directed but didn’t write, take place in Los Angeles.

Another reason he’s a solid fit: Ayer already has a history with this project, having written a draft of the screenplay. Since his draft, people like The Wolf of Wall Street writer Terence Winter and a little-known duo called the Coen Brothers have taken a crack at the script, so it’s unknown how much of his own material remains in there and if he’d want to restore some of it if he indeed signs on the dotted line to bring this movie to life.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story actor Diego Luna had been attached to star for a few months now, but Variety – who revealed the news of Ayer’s flirtation with directing – says they’re unsure if Luna is still involved at this stage. I hope he is, because the whole story this time is supposed to revolve around a Mexican immigrant who achieves a twisted version of the American dream by becoming a drug kingpin. Watching the often fresh-faced Luna undergo that transformation just might be enticing enough to overshadow the fact that Brian De Palma’s 1983 version of this story that starred Al Pacino is an ugly, overrated mess of a film. #shotsfired

In any case, Ayer directing a Scarface remake sounds like a perfect marriage of material and filmmaker. Plus, it presumably keeps him away from Gotham City Sirens, a film I’d much rather see someone else – anyone else – step in to direct.

Scarface already has a release date scheduled: it hits theaters on August 10, 2018.

Suicide Squad meets Lord of the Rings in $90 MILLION David Ayer Will Smith Bright trailer https://briefnews.eu/suicide-squad-meets-lord-of-the-rings-in-90-million-david-ayer-will-smith-bright-trailer/ https://briefnews.eu/suicide-squad-meets-lord-of-the-rings-in-90-million-david-ayer-will-smith-bright-trailer/#respond Mon, 27 Feb 2017 23:21:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/suicide-squad-meets-lord-of-the-rings-in-90-million-david-ayer-will-smith-bright-trailer/

The new movie mixes elf, orcs and fairies with cops and guns in a fantastical new vision of modern America which has already broken records for Netflix.

Lord of the Rings magical creatures mix with tough cops and shadey criminals in the original drama which hits screens later this year.

Smith plays a human cop paired with Joel Egerton’s orc as DC meets Middle Earth in the ultimate mash-up.

Watch the first trailer next.

Although he achieved global fame for Suicide Squad, the director actually has considerable previous experience with cop dramas.

Ayer worked on the hard-hitting End of Watch and Training Day, as well as the Second World war drama Fury with Brad Pitt.

He brought a tough sensibility to his recent DC project. Although not all critics or fans were won over,  The director is currently said to be workling on the spin-off, Gotham City Sirens with Margot Robbie returning as Harley Quinn, alongside Poison Ivy and Catwoman. in the DC adaptation.

THE BRIGHT TRAILER IS NEXT

Netlix has spent $ 90million on the project to keep it off the big screen. Almost half the budget will go towards rewarding the big-name stars, which also include Prometheus actress Noomi Rapace as an elf, who woudl usually receive a percentage of a film’s profits after its cinema release.

The TV network signalled how serious it is about the project by debuting the trailer during the Oscars last night. The high profile talent involved and huge budget signal that Netflix is pitching itself as a major player in television and film production.

Whether the audience responds to a rather tricky premise will be revealed upon its release in December.

Let’s block ads! (Why?)
