It’s clear from the very beginning of director Nicolas Pesce’s Piercing that he wants us on edge. He opens with a shot of a new father Reed (Christopher Abbott) standing over his infant son with an ice pick just inches from the child’s face. Reed snaps himself out of what seems like a trance and finishes packing for what he tells his wife (Laia Costa) is a business trip but is, in fact, a carefully planned and well-rehearsed killing of a total stranger, complete with a murder kit that we get to know well over the course of the film.

Based on the popular ’90s novel by Ry? Murakami (who also wrote the source novel for Takashi Miike’s Audition) and adapted by Pesce (The Eyes of My Mother), Piercing begins as what appears to be a cut-and-dry exploration of the obsessive behavior of a psychopath. But things evolves into something much more alluring and curious as both killer and victim prove to have a shared background of pain and abuse that opens up the possibility that they may become more like kindred spirits or even partners in the game of hurting each other.

The would-be victim here is a wasted prostitute named Jackie (Mia Wasikowska), who finds a way to be both intriguing and unpredictable in a way Reed did not anticipate. Before he summons her from an escort service, Reed unpacks his killing implements and moves through his hotel room, rehearsing every choreographed moment of Jackie’s death like it were a modern dance that combines small talk, erasing fingerprints, a relaxing drink, the suggestion of light S&M, knocking her out with chloroform, and stabbing her jugular with the ice pick. Perhaps even more disturbing than that, Reed also practices cutting her body into more manageable pieces in the bathtub, complete with an unnerving sound effects accompaniment.

When Jackie arrives, she presents herself as a loose cannon to Reed, whose buttoned-up demeanor might make American Psycho’s Patrick Bateman uncomfortable. And the more she throws off his planning, the more he begins to unravel. She’s messy and impossible to control (which may explain why having a newborn in his life may have set him on edge), but she’s also powerful, possessing the kind of strength that often comes from a lifetime’s worth of fighting back.

It’s my understanding that the novel makes this entangled relationship and their damaged pasts more explicit while Peace’s reworking only gives us a late-film flashback into Reed’s childhood that is both unnecessary and more than a little distracting. In no way a detriment to the movie, the filmmaker seems more fascinating by the power dynamic between Reed and Jackie, which is in almost constant flux. But as each party wrestles—both physically and psychologically—with the other for dominance, the two actually grow closer as they start to understand that shared pain might be their greatest aphrodisiac.

Piercing comes courtesy of the impressive BorderLine Films, a collective founded by Josh Mond, Sean Durkin, and Antonio Campos (all of whom are credited producers), which has spawned such well-received indie hits Martha Marcy May Marlene, James White (also starring Abbott), Christine, and Pesce’s The Eyes of My Mother. There seems to have been a concerted effort among these titles to tackle familiar subject in unfamiliar ways, and Piercing is no different. The film braids horror elements with dark humor, trippy visuals (cinematographer Zachary Galler’s work here is stunning and inventive), a twisted romance, and an inversion of the traditional and tired stalker/victim motif.

There’s never a moment in Piercing where Reed feels more dangerous than Jackie, and that’s entirely due to Wasikowska’s live-wire performance in which she toys with her would-be captor’s expectations. She’s an outdoor animal trapped inside with a man attempting to tame the untamable, and he’s a man who hates the unpredictable and other things that he can’t control. In those moments in the story when Jackie is solidly in control, Reed is in hell. It doesn’t help that a certain portion of what Reed sees and experiences might be more a product of his fractured psyche.

There are brief moments when the pair are forced into the outside world and must interact with more stable individuals, but Piercing works best as a two-person study of kinky fetishists left to their own whacked-out devices. With a running time that barely crosses 80 minutes, the film feels like an early draft of something worthy of deeper examination. Anything resembling background about Jackie would have been welcome and helpful in deepening our understanding of her behavior. And while I certainly am a firm proponent that nothing is scarier than the unknown, getting at bit into a character’s motivations only makes us care about their fate more. Again, it’s a testament to Wasikowska’s acting that we have even a passing interest in Jackie’s history and mental state.

Abbott continues to provide proof that he is one of the finest actors in his age group, displaying a range of performances in the last few years that makes it a genuine treat to see what he brings to each new part. He seems almost desperate not to repeat himself from role to role, and Reed is a bundle of insecurities wearing an ill-fitting killer’s mask.

Despite the dominating presence of a prostitute character, Piercing largely skirts the issue of whether either of these deranged folks is getting turned on by any of this. There’s no denying that the line between sex and violence is blurred for these people, almost beyond distinction, but Pesce has some difficulty capturing that in a way the audience can embrace and comprehend. The performances pull this one across the finish line convincingly and makes some truly demented behavior translate into surprisingly mainstream entertainment.

Susanna Reid SHUNS Piers Morgan after GMB segment goes awry: 'Talk to the hand' https://briefnews.eu/susanna-reid-shuns-piers-morgan-after-gmb-segment-goes-awry-talk-to-the-hand/ https://briefnews.eu/susanna-reid-shuns-piers-morgan-after-gmb-segment-goes-awry-talk-to-the-hand/#respond Mon, 27 Nov 2017 08:05:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/susanna-reid-shuns-piers-morgan-after-gmb-segment-goes-awry-talk-to-the-hand/

The ITV duo were chatting to former Britain’s Got Talent winner Ashleigh Butler and new pup Sully when Piers, 52, thought that disciplining a dog would be easier than it looks.

Talking to the 22-year-old guest, the outspoken host said: “What I’ve discovered is that it’s not you – that dog will do anything for chocolate”

Putting it to the test, Piers turned to Susanna, 46, and started talking to her like a pooch while holding chocolate to her face.

It seems that his colleague was less than impressed however, snapping back: “Talk to the hand because the face ain’t listening.

“Just ignore Piers Morgan,” she told a confused Sully who scrambled to reach the goodies.

The segment ended with the pair as friends as Piers eventually handed the chocolate to the pup after he stood up on his back legs for it.

Last week, Good Morning Britain was thrown into absolute chaos when Piers called a guest a “d**k” live on air.

Susanna was visibly shocked by the comment, but her co-host insisted that he was just making a reference to the “Love Guru’s” name of Richard La Ruina.

The guest got the last laugh as he snapped back: “Is your name Piers Moron then? If you want to get on to that.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV from 6am.

Suspect charges at clerical assistant as court appearance goes awry (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/suspect-charges-at-clerical-assistant-as-court-appearance-goes-awry-video/ https://briefnews.eu/suspect-charges-at-clerical-assistant-as-court-appearance-goes-awry-video/#respond Sat, 14 Oct 2017 20:08:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/suspect-charges-at-clerical-assistant-as-court-appearance-goes-awry-video/

A man may now be facing further charges after attempting to tackle a judicial assistant during a court appearance in Washington state.

Footage of the incident posted on the Pierce County Sheriff Department’s Facebook page Friday shows the suspect sitting quietly next to his lawyer before, apparently without provocation, charging at a woman performing clerical duties at another desk.

As onlookers run from the courtroom, and correctional officers move to tackle the man, his lawyer remains steadfast, seemingly unimpressed with his client’s behavior.

In a statement posted along with the video, Pierce County Police described the suspect as a “Level III sex offender,” and commended its corrections deputies for their swift intervention.

“One of our corrections deputies chased after the suspect, grabbed his suit jacket and pulled him away as the judicial assistant fled from her desk toward a safe area,” the statement read.

“The corrections deputy tackled the suspect and took him into custody for the destruction of property.”

According to King County Assault Center, a Level III sex offender is classed as someone who poses a high risk of re-offending within the community at large.

The suspect is said to have caused up to $ 1,000 worth of damage after smashing a monitor and throwing other clerical equipment to the ground during the tussle with the deputies.

Dancing Pikachu dragged off stage after routine goes awry at Pokemon festival (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/dancing-pikachu-dragged-off-stage-after-routine-goes-awry-at-pokemon-festival-video/ https://briefnews.eu/dancing-pikachu-dragged-off-stage-after-routine-goes-awry-at-pokemon-festival-video/#respond Sat, 06 May 2017 14:40:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/dancing-pikachu-dragged-off-stage-after-routine-goes-awry-at-pokemon-festival-video/

Won’t someone please think of the Pikachus? Video from last weekend’s Pokemon festival in Songdo, South Korea, shows a dancer dressed as the character from the animated series struggling with the costume before being tackled and pulled off stage.

The bizarre scene occurs during an equally strange Pikachu dance show in which a 15-strong group of the critters plod around a stage to a medley of terrible pop songs.

About a minute into the dance, seemingly overawed by the occasion, the lead Pikachu begins to flounder as the bright yellow costume visibly deflates.

The unfortunate Pokemon is then unexpectedly rushed by two men dressed in suits. And, as though expecting one of the character’s famous electrical attacks, a further five men appear as back up and forcefully usher poor Pikachu away from his companions.

The rest of the troupe, meanwhile, continue the routine as if nothing has happened.

Towards the end of the quirky spectacle the fallen idol is guided back towards the rest of his group, but fails to make the cut as the costume once again starts to deflate. Clearly unimpressed with their underperforming star, the suited men quickly guide the hapless Pikachu towards the back of the arena.

Sleepwalking is the result of a survival mechanism gone awry https://briefnews.eu/sleepwalking-is-the-result-of-a-survival-mechanism-gone-awry/ https://briefnews.eu/sleepwalking-is-the-result-of-a-survival-mechanism-gone-awry/#respond Sun, 19 Mar 2017 04:55:20 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sleepwalking-is-the-result-of-a-survival-mechanism-gone-awry/ sleepwalkingLast night, most of us went to the safety and comfort of our beds before drifting off to a night’s sleep.

For some, this was the last conscious action before an episode of sleepwalking.

Recent research from Stanford University shows that up to 4 per cent of adults might have had such an experience. In fact, sleepwalking is on the rise, in part due to increased use of pharmacologically based sleep aids – notably Ambien.

Often, the episodes are harmless. Take for example, Lee Hadwin, a Londoner whose professional artistic talent seems to be present and activated only while he sleeps.

Sometimes, of course, sleepwalking is dangerous.

Somnambulists are in an irrational state during which they could harm themselves or others. Some extreme examples include the instance of the English teenager who in 2009 jumped eight metres out of her bedroom window, or the case of Kenneth Parks in Toronto, who in 1987 drove 23km and murdered his mother-in-law, all apparently while sleeping. Parks committed the act – if that’s the right word – despite an agreeable relationship with the victim and a lack of motive.

Why do some enter into such a potentially harmful state during sleep?

One answer comes from studies suggesting that ‘sleepwalking’ might not be an appropriate term for what is going on; rather, primitive brain regions involved in emotional response (in the limbic system) and complex motor activity (within the cortex) remain in ‘active’ states that are difficult to distinguish from wakefulness. Such activity is characterized by ‘alpha wave’ patterns detected during electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings.

At the same time, regions in the frontal cortex and hippocampus that control rationality and memory remain essentially dormant and unable to carry out their typical functions, manifesting a ‘delta wave’ pattern seen during classic sleep.

It’s as though sleepwalking results when the brain doesn’t completely transition from sleep to wakefulness – it’s essentially stuck in a sleep-wake limbo.

japan sleeping trainChris Gladis/Flickr‘The rational part of the brain is in a sleep-like state and does not exert its normal control over the limbic system and the motor system,’ explains the Italian neuroscientist Lino Nobili, a sleep researcher at Niguarda Hospital in Milan. ‘So behavior is regulated by a kind of archaic survival system like the one that is activated during fight-or-flight.’

But why would our brains enter into such a mixed state, representative of neither wakefulness nor sleeping? We need a restful sleep – would it not be more beneficial if the brain went totally ‘comatose’ until that rest was achieved?

When one considers our distant, pre-human ancestors, answers begin to take shape. For aeons, the safety provided by the spot where our predecessors chose to lay their heads for the night was, in many ways, compromised compared with the safety of our current bedroom spaces.

Other species employ such strategies as well. I’m reminded of a startling experience I had while hiking. As I was navigating the trail in the twilight, a deer jumped out from underneath the branches of a fallen tree and bolted off into the distance. I was amazed at how close I had come to it before it sprang into furious action – only a few metres.

It likely had been asleep and, upon waking, realised the potential danger it was in. What struck me was how the deer seemed to be triggered for action, even while asleep. In fact, many animals can maintain brain activity required for survival during sleep. For example, frigate birds fly for days, even months, and maintain flight during sleep while traveling vast distances over an ocean.

The phenomenon is observed in humans too.

On the first night in a new environment, research has shown, one hemisphere of our brain remains more active than the other during sleep – essentially maintaining a ‘vigilant mode’, able to respond to unfamiliar, potentially danger-signaling sounds.

Scientists now agree that bouts of localized wakeful-like activity in motor-related areas and the limbic system can occur without concurrent sleepwalking. In fact, these areas have been shown to have low arousal thresholds for activation.

Surprisingly, despite their association with sleepwalking, these low thresholds have been considered an adaptive trait – a boon to survival. Throughout most of our extensive ancestry, this trait may have been selected for its survival value.

‘During sleep, we can have an activation of the motor system, so although you are sleeping and not moving, the motor cortex can be in a wake-like state – ready to go,’ explains Nobili, who led the team that conducted the work. ‘If something really goes wrong and endangers you, you don’t need your frontal lobe’s rationality to escape. You need a motor system that is ready.’ In sleepwalking, however, this adaptive system has gone awry. ‘An external trigger that would normally produce a small arousal triggers a full-blown episode.’

Antonio Zadra, a professor of psychology at the University of Montreal in Canada, explains it like this: ‘Information is being filtered by your brain, which is still monitoring the background – what’s going on around the sleeper – and deciding what’s important. “Ok, so we are not going to wake up the sleeper” or “This is potentially threatening so we should.” But the process of going from sleep to wakefulness is, in sleepwalkers, dysfunctional, clearly.’

Despite evidence of localized activity during sleep in both human and non-human animal brains, sleepwalking is, among primates, apparently a uniquely human phenomenon. It stands to reason, therefore, that the selection pressure for this trait in our ancestors uniquely outweighed the cost.

Philip Jaekl studied neuroscience at York University in Toronto and went on to complete postdoctoral research at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Spain, and at the University of Rochester in New York.
