Tale of Two Cities: A long weekend in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem https://briefnews.eu/tale-of-two-cities-a-long-weekend-in-tel-aviv-and-jerusalem/ https://briefnews.eu/tale-of-two-cities-a-long-weekend-in-tel-aviv-and-jerusalem/#respond Sat, 10 Nov 2018 12:54:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tale-of-two-cities-a-long-weekend-in-tel-aviv-and-jerusalem/

Israel is popular with many young travellers, being a hub for Gay Pride every year as well as having a bustling nightlife and beach city vibe, and will even host Eurovision in 2019.

The national carrier El Al has recently launched direct flights to Israel from Manchester, while easyJet, Ryanair and British Airways fly directly to Tel Aviv from London.

Many may no realise, however, that the capital city Jerusalem is less than an hour from Tel Aviv, lending itself to an easy day visit.

A long weekend could easily make a two city break to appease the whole family, with the modern city to the ancient walls.

Tel Aviv is certainly a young person’s city, with holes in the wall serving street food and drinks late into the night. While not cheap, there are a number of ‘bracelet’ bars, which is when a package can be bought, often for the price of two drinks, which allows unlimited alcohol all night. Their happy hour also differs to the UK: while it is often between 6pm and 8pm, once purchased, half-price drinks can be enjoyed all night.

Bars such as Sputnik, an outdoor steampunk-meets-jungle vibe, and Aria are some of the more upmarket joints, while Rutina is one for the cheap deals and Beer Bazaar offers a range of beers on the corner of the street.

While the nightlife is certainly what the city prides itself on, it doesn’t hide the history of the city. There was not much to it up until 1909.

With the 66 families based in Jaffa, the south of the city, over the next few years, 4,000 Bauhaus architecture buildings were assembled, similarly to the architecture in Berlin and Rio de Janerio.

With ‘Tel’ meaning old, this represents the ancient Roman, Greek and Turkish heritage, while ‘Aviv’ means the time it was established which was in the spring, representing new life.

This amalgamation of new and old best represents the city, which is best explored along the seafront.

Stay at the newly opened The Lighthouse hotel (prices from £124 per night) or Hotel Saul (prices from £102 per night) to be in the centre of the city.

Explore the seafront, which is regulated to ensure all prices are the same at each join, with the LA startup Bird, electric scooters that locals zip past on.

Whizz along the promenade down to Jaffa, where the markets and cafes are best explored for the best falafel wraps or local homewares.

However, spot the crowd at Hakosem where falafel pittas and pomegranate lemonade are worth the wait, and the cost.

When the busy city becomes too much, it is time to head out to Jerusalem. While the crowds are no less in number, the history of the ancient city is one to be explored.

Less than an hour by road and a simple route, walking through any of the gates of the ancient walls is taking a step back in time.

The Western Wall is where many go to pray, and people write their notes to put into the wall, although no photographs or pens are allowed near this area during Shabbat, the day of rest for Jewish people.

Even for the strictest of atheists, it can be hard not to get swept up in the old city and all that it represents.

Just outside of the walls, however, is the Holocaust Museum. Tastefully done, the free museum conveys the depths of the Jewish genocide, exploring the years before and how it came to create the sentiment that spread through WWII, as well as the aftermath.

A visit to Israel is also not without a visit to the Dead Sea, the lowest point on Earth.

The Dead Sea, along the Israel-Jordan border, is somewhat hard to see off-the-beaten-track, with most points only pay-to-enter.

However, once down there, using the clay mud and floating in the water is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Tourists are warned against wearing contact lenses or having open wounds due to the high salt content in the water.

Enjoying the unusual sensation before leaving to soft skin is a trip all of the family will enjoy, however.

By experiencing the two cities, both offering something of the Israeli history as well as a combination of beach-city and historical sites means it can please even the fussiest of travellers.

Tel Aviv won’t change Syrian policy despite downing of Russian Il-20 – Israeli defense minister https://briefnews.eu/tel-aviv-wont-change-syrian-policy-despite-downing-of-russian-il-20-israeli-defense-minister/ https://briefnews.eu/tel-aviv-wont-change-syrian-policy-despite-downing-of-russian-il-20-israeli-defense-minister/#respond Sun, 23 Sep 2018 11:57:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tel-aviv-wont-change-syrian-policy-despite-downing-of-russian-il-20-israeli-defense-minister/

Israel will not cease operations in Syria, Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman announced just before the Russian military published a detailed chronology of the downing of its Il-20, for which Moscow says Tel Aviv is to blame.

In the run-up to the publication of the Russian Defense Ministry report, Lieberman told local Kan Bet radio that he is not eager to engage in a media debate with Moscow over the incident. However, he was quick to reiterate that Syrian government forces were responsible for the incident.

The top Israeli military official stated that “nothing” has or will change in Tel Aviv’s approach to the Arab Republic, which it considers to be turning into Iran’s “base” for anti-Israeli operations.

The Russian defense ministry published a minute-by-minute account of the Il-20 downing, stressing that the blame for the crash “lies entirely with the Israeli Air Force.” The plane was on a reconnaissance mission over the Idlib de-escalation zone on Monday when it was shot down by Syrian air defense units responding to an Israeli air raid. Russia insists that Israel left the aircraft almost no time to leave the area before the strike.

Tel Aviv has denied the accusations, shifting all blame for the incident on Damascus. Shortly after the downing of the aircraft, a team of Israeli military officials, including its air force chief, rushed to present Russia with their own version of how events had unfolded. There has been no immediate comment from Israel in response to the Russian MoD report.

US ‘strongly encourages’ Paraguay not to move its embassy from Jerusalem back to Tel Aviv https://briefnews.eu/us-strongly-encourages-paraguay-not-to-move-its-embassy-from-jerusalem-back-to-tel-aviv/ https://briefnews.eu/us-strongly-encourages-paraguay-not-to-move-its-embassy-from-jerusalem-back-to-tel-aviv/#respond Fri, 07 Sep 2018 01:51:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/us-strongly-encourages-paraguay-not-to-move-its-embassy-from-jerusalem-back-to-tel-aviv/ Washington has urged Asuncion to think twice about the “historic relationship” between the US, Israel and Paraguay, and reconsider the decision to move the country’s Israeli embassy back to Tel Aviv.

After Paraguay announced the embassy move plans, Vice President Mike Pence was quick to get President Mario Abdo Benitez on the line. “The Vice President strongly encouraged President Abdo Benitez to follow through with Paraguay’s previous commitment to move the embassy as a sign of the historic relationship the country has maintained with both Israel and the United States,” the White House said in a statement on Thursday.

In May, Paraguay joined a tiny list of countries who have opted to follow US’ suit in moving their embassies in wake of Donald Trump’s recognition of the Holy City as the capital of the Jewish State.

On former President Horacio Cartes’ orders, Paraguay’s embassy officially moved to Jerusalem on May 21, less than a week after United States relocated its mission. Guatemala also relocated their diplomatic mission to the city which the Jewish nation views as its historic capital.

Yet despite the move, which was well-received by the Israeli politicians at the time, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Abdo Benitez, who took office in August, decided to reverse the relocation. In retaliation, Israel announced that it will close its embassy in the South American country.

The new president however rushed to defend his choice stressing that “Paraguay is a country of principles,” which strives to achieve “broad, lasting and just peace” between Israelis and Palestinians by following international law.

Amid massive disapproval from the Jewish community, the Arab League applauded Asuncion’s choice, while the Palestinian Authority branded Paraguay’s decision a “diplomatic achievement,” promising to “immediately” open its representation in the Latin American country.

American Jews slam Israel’s ‘racist’ nation-state bill as thousands protest against it in Tel Aviv https://briefnews.eu/american-jews-slam-israels-racist-nation-state-bill-as-thousands-protest-against-it-in-tel-aviv/ https://briefnews.eu/american-jews-slam-israels-racist-nation-state-bill-as-thousands-protest-against-it-in-tel-aviv/#respond Sun, 15 Jul 2018 01:05:16 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/american-jews-slam-israels-racist-nation-state-bill-as-thousands-protest-against-it-in-tel-aviv/ Thousands of people have taken to the streets of the Israeli capital in protest against the so-called nation-state bill, which, they say, would enable ethnic segregation. The controversial bill also drew criticism from US Jews.

Demonstrators marched through the streets of Tel Aviv chanting: “Full equality and no less,” “Jews and Arabs refuse to be enemies” and “The nation bill is a disaster,” according to witnesses.

“The Nation-State Law would turn racism, discrimination, and segregation into an inescapable part of our lives. More than that – racism and discrimination are becoming desired and central in the State of Israel. The Nation-State Law will bring exclusion and damage to minorities to terrifying levels we have never seen before. Our stance is clear: all citizens –all– are equal,” the organizers of the rally stated, as cited by the Jerusalem Post.

Between 2,500 and 7,000 people took part in the rally, according to various Israeli media reports. The demonstration was organized by a wide range of NGOs, rights groups and at least four Israeli political parties. The march was reportedly led by some members of the Knesset – the Israeli parliament.

The bill in question, which is currently being debated in the Knesset and is expected to come to a final vote on Monday, declares Israel the nation-state of the Jewish people. Opponents of the controversial legislation say it would prioritize Jewish values over democratic ones and effectively endanger the rights of Israeli Arab citizens as well as even secular Israelis.

One of the most controversial clauses of the new bill envisages the establishment of settlements or communities that are segregated by religion or nationality. “The state may allow a community, including members of one religion or of one nationality, to maintain a separate communal settlement,” the provision says, according to the Jerusalem Post. This particular clause even drew criticism from Israeli President Reuven Rivlin. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, however, actively supports the legislation.

“The law of division and discrimination that this government is promoting – which they call the Nation-State Bill – will leave a great many of us out; out of towns with “admission committees; out of fair treatment in the courts; out of citizenship; out of democracy. To this, we will not agree,” the groups participating in the rally said in a statement.

The controversial bill also drew criticism from abroad, particularly from US Jews: 14 American Jewish organizations expressed their concerns over the legislation to the incoming Jewish Agency Chairman Isaac Herzog, who is also the opposition leader in the Knesset.

Some of these groups, such as the New Israel Fund, also took part in Saturday’s rally. “This is tribalism at its worst,” the New Israel Fund CEO Daniel Sokatch told Haaretz. “Beginning with Israel’s Declaration of Independence, the Jewish value of human dignity and the principle of the equality of all people have formed the democratic foundation of the state. This law is completely incompatible with those values,” he added.

Meanwhile, if adopted, the nation-state law would acquire the status of a “basic” law, which gives it a power equal to the constitution (even though Israel does not have a written one). “If racism, sexism, and religious fundamentalism are to be protected in Israel’s basic laws, it should be no surprise when the country embodies those values. This bill and the government that supported it are a danger to Israel’s future,” Sokatch, who even wrote a piece on the issue for the San Diego Jewish World media outlet, warned.

Others were seemingly also concerned over Israel’s international reputation. Rabbi Rick Jacobs, President of the Union for Reform Judaism, particularly warned that adoption of the bill would “make Israel an open target on the world stage for all those who seek to deny the Jewish people our right to a homeland.”

The news comes just days after the Irish Senate, the upper house of parliament, supported a bill that makes it illegal to import goods produced in the illegal Israeli settlements built on the Occupied Territories in the West Bank. The move prompted the Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman to call for Israel’s embassy in Ireland to be closed “immediately.”

‘Crime Minister’: Thousands rally in Tel Aviv demanding Netanyahu quit over corruption scandal https://briefnews.eu/crime-minister-thousands-rally-in-tel-aviv-demanding-netanyahu-quit-over-corruption-scandal/ https://briefnews.eu/crime-minister-thousands-rally-in-tel-aviv-demanding-netanyahu-quit-over-corruption-scandal/#respond Sun, 17 Dec 2017 09:03:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/crime-minister-thousands-rally-in-tel-aviv-demanding-netanyahu-quit-over-corruption-scandal/

Thousands of Israelis marched in Tel Aviv, calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu following corruption allegations. Protesters chanted “Bibi is an embarrassment” and held signs reading “Crime Minister.”

Some 10,000 anti-corruption protesters joined the so-called ‘March of Shame’ on Tel Aviv’s Rothschild Boulevard for a third consecutive week, Ynet news reported. People were heard chanting “Bibi is an embarrassment” using Netanyahu’s nickname. Many held signs bearing slogans like “Corrupted, we’re fed up with you,” or “Corrupted, go home” or “Sweeping out the corrupted.”

“We love this country,” Amos Levy, a Tel Aviv resident who attended the protest with his 6-year-old son, told Jerusalem Post. “That is why we can’t let corruption continue and why we can’t let our leaders continue to lie to us.”

Similar protests against Netanyahu and corruption took place in several cities across the country including Jerusalem, Haifa, Modiin, Ashkelon and Ashdod.

Netanyahu is embroiled into two separate corruption investigations. The first centers on him allegedly accepting gifts worth tens of thousands of dollars from billionaire Arnon Milchan. While Netanyahu firmly denies any wrongdoing, he reportedly acknowledged having done Milchan’s bidding to then-US Secretary of State John Kerry. The second probe revolves around his alleged attempt to strike a deal with the influential Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper for better coverage.

At the same time the PM’s wife, Sara Netanyahu, faces fraud charges over allegedly wasting $ 100,000 of public funds.

On Friday, Netanyahu was questioned for the seventh time over the corruption scandal. He later took to social media to say that all accusations against him were groundless.  “There is nothing new under the sun. This time, too, I answered all the questions, and again I say with absolute certainty: There will be nothing, because there was nothing,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, violent clashes continue to rock East Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza in the wake of Trump’s announcement earlier in December that the US will move its Israeli embassy to Jerusalem. The decision caused outrage throughout the world and all other members of the UN Security Council have condemned the move for undermining the ongoing peace process.

20,000 join Tel Aviv ‘March of Shame’ to protest bill aimed at protecting Netanyahu (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/20000-join-tel-aviv-march-of-shame-to-protest-bill-aimed-at-protecting-netanyahu-video/ https://briefnews.eu/20000-join-tel-aviv-march-of-shame-to-protest-bill-aimed-at-protecting-netanyahu-video/#respond Sun, 03 Dec 2017 03:52:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/20000-join-tel-aviv-march-of-shame-to-protest-bill-aimed-at-protecting-netanyahu-video/

Thousands of people, outraged at a new bill that would spare the Israeli PM from public outcry linked to two corruption probes, swarmed into downtown Tel Aviv on Saturday in a protest that became the largest since the launch of the investigation.

A large crowd descended on central Rothschild Boulevard and marched towards Habima Square, decrying Netanyahu as the “Crime Minister,” according to placards carried by activists. The disgruntled protesters, armed with loudspeakers, chanted “Bibi is a disgrace” and called for him to “go home” or be jailed, and for the reinstatement of legal order.

Police did not provide any official count for the rally, but Israel’s Channel 10 and Reuters reported the number of protesters at around 20,000 people, a turnout previously unseen at the weekly demonstrations that have been taking place every Saturday evening since the opening of the probe against Netanyahu in December 2016.

“I’m here with a lot of people who are fed up with the government and especially with the prime minister, who is trying to destroy the democracy of our country,” Michal, a participant of the rally, told RT’s Ruptly video news agency, accusing the Netanyahu government of uprooting the efforts of several Jewish generations to establish a democracy in the country.

The increase in attendance is likely due to a controversial “Recommendations Law” that is heading for a second reading in parliament on Monday. The law, dubbed the “Netanyahu bill” by the opposition, would prevent police from publishing their recommendations to the Attorney General on whether to charge suspects in existing cases, and ban them altogether from advising the Attorney General in future cases.

If adopted by the parliament, the legislation would see police withholding conclusions in corruption probes into Netanyahu, sparing him from a potential public outcry.

The Israeli leader is mired into two separate corruption investigations. The first centers on him allegedly accepting gifts such as expensive wine and cigarettes worth some $ 100,000-$ 150,000 from billionaire Arnon Milchan.

While Netanyahu firmly denies any wrongdoing, he reportedly acknowledged doing Milchan’s bidding to then-US Secretary of State John Kerry. The second probe revolves around his alleged intention to strike a deal with the influential Yediot Aharonot newspaper for better coverage.

While the investigation into Netanyahu has been dragging on for a year, the Knesset, the Israeli Parliament, is expected to pass the law by the end of next week.
