A Thursday night arrest of a 17-year-old in the UK may have led to the capture of one of the biggest video game-related leakers in recent history.

London police forces confirmed their apprehension of an Oxford suspect on a social media channel regularly used for police arrest updates, and it clarified the suspect’s age, a vague charge of “suspicion of hacking,” and that the investigation was coordinated with the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) and specifically its National Cyber Crime Unit.

That charge was followed hours later by a report from American freelance journalist Matthew Keys alleging that the arrest revolved squarely around the recent theft and distribution of unreleased assets from British video game studio Rockstar North. This report cites “sources” to claim that the FBI was involved in this investigation and that the data seized also included portions of a massive Uber-related breach. Keys’ report, as of press time, has not been corroborated by larger newsrooms in either the US or UK.

Authorities in Michigan are investigating how a device used by voters ended up for sale on eBay.

An election machine security expert in Connecticut spotted the voter assist terminal on the online marketplace and purchased it for $ 1,200 before alerting Michigan authorities, CNN reported.

"We are actively working with law enforcement to investigate allegations of an illegal attempt to sell a voter assist terminal acquired in Michigan," said Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson in a statement on Thursday.

Benson clarified that voter assist terminals are "not used to tabulate ballots, but are typically used by voters with disabilities who need assistance marking their ballot privately at polling places."

In an interview with CNN, Ohio resident Ean Hutchison claims he purchased the device online at Goodwill for $ 7.99 before auctioning it on eBay.

"I wasn't even aware that they were supposed to be sold, let alone donated to Goodwill," he told the outlet.

Voting machines were central to former president Donald Trump's arguments falsely claiming he beat President Biden in the 2020 election. In Michigan, Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel has accused her rival, Trump-backed Republican Matthew DePerno, of engaging in a conspiracy to gain access to voting machines used in the 2020 presidential election. 

"Our elections are and remain safe and secure," Benson in a tweet on Thursday. "We take seriously all violations of election law and will be working with authorities to ensure there are consequences for those who break the law."

Goodwill and eBay did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

“[The teeth] have been kicked out by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) operatives, fell out or were removed due to horrible conditions, bad food and sloppy dentist work,” Yaroshenko wrote.

The pilot’s health is declining; he cannot eat properly as he suffers from digestive problems. “Every time I eat, I’m afraid to choke,” Yaroshenko stated. The authorities, however, have not even provided him with a medical evaluation to determine what is wrong with his health.

“I don’t receive any assistance with my problems and I still was not sent to a medical exam, which they promised when my family came to visit. There’s a dentist at the jail medical ward, yet all he can do is to pull out the remaining teeth. And there aren’t many of them left,” Yaroshenko said.

This summer, he was transferred from Fort Dix federal prison in New Jersey to another prison in Danbury, Connecticut, after he was allegedly involved in a scuffle with another inmate. The new jail has even less adequate healthcare, according to Yaroshenko. Apart from that, prisoners in Danbury are not allowed to go for walks in the open air from November to March, which further contributes to his declining health.

Konstantin Yaroshenko was once a professional civil aircraft pilot, working in various countries on the African continent. In 2010, he went to Liberia seeking work, but was promptly arrested in a DEA sting operation and secretly transferred to the US in violation of international law and universal diplomatic protocol.

The pilot was accused of “conspiring” to carry a large batch of cocaine from South America to Liberia and sentenced to 20 years behind bars in 2011. Yaroshenko has always maintained his innocence, stating that the charges against him were actually based on statements he made due to his poor understanding and command of English.

Of the 5,712 American Indian and Alaska Native girls and women reported missing in 2016, only 116 of those were logged in the Department of Justice’s federal missing persons database, NamUs, and the real number of missing women is likely to be even higher due to underreporting, racial misclassification and a lack of coordination between tribal and state authorities.

Murder is the third-leading cause of death among indigenous women, according to the Centers for Disease Control, which also found violence on reservations occurs at ten times the national average. While this figure understandably gets a lot of attention, authorities lack similar numbers for American Indians and Alaskan Natives living in cities – which is almost three quarters of them. Seattle’s Urban Indian Health Institute (UIHI)’s report is an attempt to fill that knowledge gap, and their findings suggest urban violence against indigenous women is massively underreported.

There was no clear pattern to the cases UIHI found, with victims as young as infants and as old as 83. In less than a hundred of the 506 cases studied, researchers were able to establish a link to overarching issues like sexual assault, domestic violence, prostitution and police brutality, much less identify the victim’s relationship to the perpetrator. The rest remain a mystery.

Law enforcement departments were reluctant to turn over information on Native American victims, and many did not respond to repeated requests; much of what researchers did receive was incomplete or wrong. Alaska State Troopers allegedly refused to provide data because the large volume of Native female homicides made dredging up all the records “too burdensome” for their staff. Perhaps most troublingly, 153 of the cases UIHI studied simply do not exist in law enforcement records. To attempt to fill the gaps, researchers combed media coverage, social media, and other government databases, in addition to interviewing communities.

Underreporting of crimes against indigenous women is a chronic problem in the US. While they are 2.5 times more likely to be raped or assaulted than their non-Native counterparts, another UIHI report released earlier this year revealed only 20 percent of indigenous victims reported their assaults. Given that US attorneys decline to prosecute almost half of cases that occur on tribal lands, victims’ reluctance to step forward is understandable – that same report found only 8 percent of reports to police led to the perpetrator’s conviction.

PALU, Indonesia (Reuters) – The toll from an earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia soared to 832 confirmed dead on Sunday, with authorities fearing the numbers will climb as rescuers grappled to get aid to outlying communities cut off from communications and help.

Dozens of people were reported to be trapped in the rubble of several hotels and a mall in the city of Palu, on Sulawesi island, which was hit by waves as high as six meters (20 feet) following the 7.5 magnitude earthquake on Friday.

Defense Distributed founder Cody Wilson was arrested at a hotel in Taipei City’s Wanhua District at around 6pm local time in Taipei today, according to reports in Taiwanese outlets The Liberty Times (Chinese, Google Translate) and United Daily News (Chinese, Google Translate).

Authorities had seen Wilson on hotel security monitors earlier in the day, around 3pm local time. They soon sent staff to wait outside the door, and Wilson eventually walked out three hours later. Liberty Times notes Wilson did not have any contraband on him at the time of the arrest, and he appeared calm when approached by authorities. Wilson was arrested for illegally entering Taiwan after the US cancelled his passport (Google Translate).

Taipei police reportedly handed Wilson over to the National Immigration Agency. Though Taiwan lacks an extradition agreement with the US, the NIA told media (Google Translate) they are quickly making arrangements to deport him back to the US. Details about how that will be coordinated were not reported.

Cypriot authorities suspect that ISIS fighters posing as refugees may have entered their country, a local daily reported, amid appeals to the EU to help with an influx of asylum seekers overloading the small island nation.

During a random check on asylum seekers’ mobile phones at the country’s refugee processing center, Cypriot authorities found saved photos of ‘refugees’ posing with weapons and dressed in Islamic State (formerly ISIS/ISIL) regalia, Cypriot newspaper “Politis” reported. The newspaper obtained two photographs, both showing men dressed in black holding AK-47s. One of the men is seen raising his index finger – a popular “salute” among Islamic State fighters and other jihadists. The refugees in question reportedly came from Dara province, which was liberated by the Syrian army in July.

The photos are currently being examined by the country’s security services and the suspected Islamic State members are being closely monitored, the paper said.

The discovery of the troubling photographs coincides with an official appeal to the EU for more help with migrants, with the small island nation warning it will be unable to cope if the influx of asylum seekers continues unabated. Cyprus has become a popular destination for asylum seekers, who reach the island by crossing into Turkey from Syria, and then embarking from the Turkish coast.

The country had received 4,022 asylum requests in the first eight months of 2018, which was 55% more than for the same period last year, according to Cypriot Interior Minister Constantinos Petrides.

In July, a boat carrying an estimated 150 migrants sank off the coast of Northern Cyprus.

Islamic State militants or other jihadists claiming to be asylum seekers has been a cause for concern throughout Europe, especially in the wake of a massive influx of refugees brought about by the EU’s open-door migrant policy. In August it was revealed that a Yazidi girl who had fled from the Islamic State slavery in Iraq was confronted by her former captor in Germany, who was posing as an asylum seeker. The teenager returned to Iraq after deciding that Europe was not safe for legitimate refugees like her.

Germany in particular has struggled with crime and violence linked to asylum seekers, after the country opened its doors to more than a million migrants two years ago. A German court recently sentenced an asylum seeker to eight and a half years for the murder of a teen girl, and incidents like the 2016 Berlin Christmas market attack and the New Year’s Eve sexual assaults in Cologne have fuelled insecurities.

Authorities in San Luis, Arizona, say they found a drug tunnel that leads to a home in Mexico in the kitchen of a former Kentucky Fried Chicken, KCBD reports. 

The nearly 600-foot-long tunnel was discovered after an August 13 drug bust, according to the outlet. During a police traffic stop, 168 kilograms — or 360 pounds —of narcotics were found inside toolboxes in a car being driven by a man named Ivan Lopez, KYMA reported.

The arrangement between the tax authorities and Ronaldo, who recently signed for Italian champions Juventus, was made to settle accusations that the player had hidden income generated from his image likeness while playing for Real Madrid.

Ronaldo was also handed a two-year jail sentence but, as is common in Spanish law, it wasn’t enforced as he was a first-time offender and it was a non-violent crime.

According to Spanish news outlet El Mundo, which claims to have seen documents related to the settlement, Ronaldo overpaid his tax by about $ 2.2 million. As a result, the total sum Ronaldo must pay is instead just over $ 19 million.

The report states that he has already paid around $ 15.2 million.

Had Ronaldo not settled with the tax authorities, he could have been levied with a fine of $ 39 million, as well as a three and a half year prison sentence. Charges against Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, have been dropped, according to El Mundo.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Drones armed with explosives detonated near Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as he gave a speech to hundreds of soldiers in Caracas on Saturday but the socialist leader was unharmed, according to the government.

Seven people were injured in the apparent attack which came as Maduro celebrated the National Guard’s 81st anniversary, said Information Minister Jorge Rodriguez. Maduro’s speech was abruptly cut short and soldiers could be seen breaking ranks and scattering.
